The volume answer: a message-free jar candle at ₹379, bought identically for everyone on the list. Thirty of them is ₹11,370; thirty of the ₹449 singles is ₹13,470.
The two tests that matter: can it be carried home on a metro or a two-wheeler without being ruined, and will the household want it. A candle passes both. A wax melt at ₹474 fails the second unless they own a warmer.
The honest gap: there is no reed diffuser below ₹749 and no machine below ₹899, so the six-to-eight-week gift is above this budget. If your list is short enough that ₹749 a head is possible, Morning Freshness at ₹749 is a different order of gift and I will not pretend otherwise.
2. If the list is long, drop to the ₹379 jar candles rather than mixing tiers. Four message-free scents — Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings, Evening Walks — the same hand-poured soy build in plain glass, 80g, roughly 15–18 hours. Everybody getting a ₹379 candle is a coherent decision. Some people getting ₹449 and some getting ₹379 is a ranking, and it will be noticed by lunchtime.
3. Apply the commute test before anything else. The gift leaves your office in somebody's hand. It has to travel in a bag with a laptop, survive a two-wheeler, and be sittable in a drawer if they are travelling that week. A sealed candle in a glass jar does all of that. Anything that melts, leaks, needs cold or takes two hands does not.
4. Apply the household test second. The person on your list is not the only recipient — a home fragrance is used by everybody who lives in that flat, which is precisely why it works better than a desk object. Avoid anything that requires hardware: wax melts at ₹474 need a warmer the household must already own, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a water-based refill for an ultrasonic machine rather than a gift, and does nothing without one.
5. Know what this budget cannot do, and say it to yourself before you order. There is no reed diffuser below ₹749 and no machine below ₹899. An 80g candle is a handful of evenings; a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 runs six to eight weeks and is still working in December. If your list is short, that is the better gift and the honest recommendation.

Three things an employee gift has to do that a family gift does not
Most gifting advice is written for a present handed over in somebody's living room. An employee gift is a different object in a different situation, and the differences are not cosmetic. It is handed over in a workplace, in front of colleagues, by somebody who holds a degree of power over the recipient. Then it leaves the building. The journey is the part nobody plans for, and it is where most staff gifts quietly fail. Below are the three tests I would apply before looking at a single product.
Bookshop₹379Picture the actual journey. A lift, a lobby, a walk to a metro station in the dark, a carriage at half past seven, a five-minute walk at the other end. Or a helmet in one hand and a bag on the footboard. A gift that needs two hands, refrigeration or careful carriage is a burden you have handed someone, not a present. A sealed 80g candle in a glass jar weighs almost nothing, does not spill, does not spoil, does not need to be eaten this week and can sit in a drawer if the person is travelling. That is an unglamorous set of properties and it is the reason candles work at this budget where prettier things do not.
Cozy Corner₹379This is the point of difference that makes home fragrance work as a staff gift. A gift given at Diwali is opened at home, usually in front of a family, and the ones that land are the ones the whole household has a use for. You are not buying for a person, you are buying for a flat you have never seen. That argues for something room-addressed rather than personal: nobody has to like it in the way they would have to like a shirt, nobody has to have a taste in it, and it does not sit in a cupboard because it was not quite right. It also argues hard against anything requiring hardware — wax melts at ₹474 are pleasant and need a warmer, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill for an ultrasonic machine and does nothing at all without one. Neither belongs on a staff list.
Evening Walks₹379An employer's gift is received in public and compared immediately. That has two consequences. The first is that it must be identical across a tier, which I will come back to. The second is that it must be impersonal in the correct way — considered, but not addressed to anything about the individual. SOSA does make candles with printed lines on them; they are the wrong object here and I would not use them for a colleague, a manager or anybody who reports to you. Plain glass with nothing on the front is the right register for a workplace, and it is also, as it happens, the better-looking object. Restraint reads as expense; decoration reads as the bargain shelf.
Buy identically within a tier — and why this matters more than the amount
The single most common failure on a staff list is not underspending. It is variation. Gifts given inside an office are compared within minutes, and any difference between them is read as information about standing, whether or not you meant it that way. If eighteen people receive a ₹449 candle and four receive something different because you ran out or found a better idea halfway through, you have not given twenty-two gifts; you have published a ranking. The fix costs nothing: decide the tier, decide the item, and order the same thing for everybody in it.
If your organisation genuinely has tiers — a leadership group, a wider staff list, a vendor list — then tier openly and keep each tier internally identical. Nobody is offended by a structure they can see; people are offended by an inconsistency they cannot explain. And where you can, make the tiers differ by category rather than by a visible price step: a ₹379 candle and a ₹449 candle sitting side by side invite a comparison, whereas a ₹379 candle for the wider list and a ₹799 reed diffuser for a small senior group are so obviously different objects that nobody attempts the arithmetic.
The second thing worth deciding early is one scent or several. My honest advice is one scent for a single tier, because it removes the comparison entirely and because it is the version that looks deliberate. But there is a practical counterweight: each item is stocked separately, and a large single-scent order is harder to fill than a large mixed-scent one. If you need a great many of one thing, that is a conversation to have before you order rather than after. There is no published bulk programme at SOSA — no rate card, no discount band, no branding, no minimum — but for anything above roughly twenty-five units, write through the contact page first. Availability by scent varies and it is better to ask than to assume.
The complete sub-₹500 shelf, scored for a staff list
Every SOSA item under ₹500 against the three tests. The scoring is mine and I have not been generous to our own products where they do not earn it.
| Item | Commute | Household | Workplace | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood candle ★ | Yes — sealed glass, light, drawer-safe | Yes — a named material, used by the room | Yes — plain jar, nothing printed | ₹449 |
| Smoked Oudh candle | Yes | Yes — deeper register, better for a younger team | Yes | ₹449 |
| Jar candles, four message-free scents | Yes | Yes, though mood names carry no material reputation | Yes — the volume answer for a long list | ₹379 |
| Candle two-pack | Yes, slightly bulkier to carry | Yes — the version for a shorter, closer list | Yes | ₹664 |
| Car perfumes 12ml | Yes | Only if they drive — a third of any staff list does not | Yes | ₹449–₹509 |
| 3ml attars | Yes | No — a personal fragrance is too personal from an employer | No | ₹379–₹399 |
| Wax melts | Yes | No — needs a warmer the household must already own | — | ₹474 |
| Hotel Collection 15ml | Yes | No — a refill for an ultrasonic machine, not a gift | — | ₹299 |
The arithmetic, and what to do if the list is long
This part is simple and worth doing on paper before you open a basket. At ₹379 a head, ten people is ₹3,790, twenty is ₹7,580, thirty is ₹11,370 and fifty is ₹18,950. At ₹449 a head, ten is ₹4,490, twenty is ₹8,980, thirty is ₹13,470 and fifty is ₹22,450. The step from ₹379 to ₹449 costs ₹70 a person, which on a list of thirty is ₹2,100 — and what that ₹2,100 buys is a material name on the jar, which is the thing that makes a modest gift arrive explained. On most lists I think that is money well spent. On a list of a hundred it may not be, and there is no shame in the ₹379 candle; it is the same hand-poured soy in the same plain glass.
Two honest points about ordering. SOSA has no bulk programme — there is no bulk rate, no discount band, no GST arrangement, no custom branding, no minimum order and no lead-time promise, and I would rather write that plainly than let a page imply otherwise. You order through the site exactly as an individual customer does. What I will say is that for anything above roughly twenty-five units it is worth writing to us through the contact page before you place the order, because availability by scent varies and a large single-scent order is harder to fill than a large mixed one. If you can accept a split — half Sandalwood, half Smoked Oudh, say, tiered by team rather than by seniority — you have far more room than somebody who needs sixty identical jars.
And the arithmetic that changes the category rather than the price: ₹749 is the floor for a reed diffuser, and a 50ml runs six to eight weeks continuously with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle. An 80g candle runs roughly 15–18 hours, which is a few evenings. If your list is twelve rather than fifty, twelve Morning Freshness at ₹749 is ₹8,988 — very close to what twenty ₹449 candles cost — and it is a materially different gift. Deciding whether you are giving to twelve people well or fifty people adequately is the actual decision on this page, and only you can make it.
The paragraph in favour of sweets, which I mean sincerely
There are offices where a box of mithai from a good halwai is the right and expected gift, and I am not going to pretend otherwise to sell a candle. Where the workplace is small enough to feel like a family, where the tradition is already established and people would notice its absence, or where the gift is being given alongside a shared meal, sweets are the correct form of the greeting. They are also the only gift that can be opened and shared on the spot, and that shared moment is worth something no wrapped object provides.
The argument against them on a staff list is not about quality, it is about arrival. A well-liked employee receives several identical boxes across the festive days — from you, from a vendor, from a client, from a neighbour — and the marginal one is not eaten, it is passed on. Sweets also raise dietary questions nobody enjoys raising at a desk: the colleague managing diabetes, the person fasting, the household avoiding dairy. And an office box has a specific failure mode of its own — it becomes a shared bowl by noon and nobody remembers who sent it. A candle carried home is attributed to you when it is lit. Where yours will be the only box, buy sweets. Where it will be one of six, buy the candle.
What to buy for employees under ₹500
In buying order, with the honest gap on the last row.
| Buy | What it is | When it is the right answer | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Sandalwood candle ★ | Hand-poured soy in plain glass, a material name an Indian household already respects | First choice for most staff lists, bought identically across the tier | ₹449 |
| 2. Smoked Oudh candle | The same build in a deeper, smokier register | Younger teams, or as the second half of a deliberate two-scent split | ₹449 |
| 3. Message-free jar candle | Four scents, 80g, roughly 15–18 hours, nothing printed on the glass | Long lists where ₹70 a head across forty or fifty people is real money | ₹379 |
| 4. Candle two-pack | Two jars of the same message-free line | A short, closer list — a small team, or people who have had a hard year | ₹664 |
| The honest gap: the reed line starts at ₹749 | There is no reed diffuser below ₹749 and no ultrasonic machine below ₹899. A 50ml reed runs 6–8 weeks with six fibre reeds in refillable glass; an 80g candle runs 15–18 hours | If the list is short enough to afford it, this is the better gift and I would rather say so | ₹749 |
Versailles
We are a small company and we buy Diwali gifts for our own people, so this is not a hypothetical page. The first year I did it, I bought four different things for eleven people because I was choosing individually and enjoying myself, and I watched the comparison happen across a table in about ninety seconds. Nobody said anything. It was still obvious. Since then it has been one item for one tier, ordered in a single go, and it has been better every time.
The second thing I would pass on is the commute. I had not thought about it at all until somebody carried a gift home on the Pune traffic on a scooter and told me, cheerfully, that it had been an ordeal. A present that is difficult to carry is a task you have handed to someone during the busiest week of their year. Weight, seal and a shape that fits a bag are unromantic virtues and they are most of what makes a workplace gift land.
Where I would push back on my own price list is duration. Under ₹500 I can give you something well made, complete and correctly pitched, and I stand behind the ₹449 candles entirely. What I cannot give you at that price is a gift that is still working when the decorations come down. That begins at ₹749 and there is no version below it. If your list is short enough for that to be possible, I would take twelve people seriously over fifty people politely. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
