Founder Diaries · Dhanteras & Festive Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
Give a parent or an in-law a designer perfume and you have given them something to evaluate. Give them an attar and you have given them something they already know what to do with - a small bottle of oil, applied on the wrist, no spray, no cloud, no fuss. The format itself does half the work, and that is the practical reason an attar is an easier gift across a generation gap than a bottle of eau de parfum at four times the price.
SOSA Ameeri attar, Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, from Rs 385
SOSA Ameeri · Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh from ₹385 →
The attar this page keeps returning to for a parent or an in-law whose taste you cannot describe. Ameeri, ₹385 for 3ml - Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. Alcohol-free, rolled on rather than sprayed, and warm rather than sharp.
Quick answers — read this first
Is an attar a good Dhanteras gift for parents or in-laws? It is one of the few fragrance formats an older recipient does not have to be taught. A SOSA attar is alcohol-free concentrated oil applied on the pulse points, from ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.

What does alcohol-free actually mean here? The fragrance is carried in oil rather than in alcohol, so it is rolled on rather than sprayed and it sits close to the skin instead of projecting across a room. Many people prefer that for their own reasons, and it is a real difference in how the fragrance behaves.

Which attar suits an older recipient? Ameeri - Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh - is the warmest and the most traditionally familiar. Nawaab - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron - reads as the formal one. Both are under ₹400 in 3ml.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes. An attar is alcohol-free concentrated oil rolled onto the pulse points, which is a format most older recipients already understand without being shown. SOSA attars are Rs 379 to Rs 399 for 3ml, Rs 669 to Rs 699 for 6ml and Rs 1,149 to Rs 1,199 for 12ml, and the Attar Trio of three is Rs 1,055.
The pick: Ameeri at ₹385 for 3ml or ₹679 for 6ml - Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh, the warmest of the four.
Why: Rose and sandalwood is the most familiar accord to an older Indian nose, and the oil format needs no explaining, no spraying and no adjusting.
Choosing a Dhanteras fragrance gift - at a glanceWorn on a person - attar from ₹379, perfume from ₹599Lives in a home - reed diffuser from ₹749, duo set from ₹1,498Lives in a car - hanging or spray from ₹449, Safar ₹3,999A whole large home or a business - SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999
The one question that settles most Dhanteras fragrance gifts: where will it live? A scent worn on a person is a taste decision and needs you to know them. A scent that lives in a room or a car is a placement decision and needs you to know their space - which is usually the easier thing to be sure of.
Straight answer
Is an attar a good Dhanteras gift for parents and in-laws, and which one should I pick?
An attar works across a generation gap for a reason that is about format rather than fragrance. It is alcohol-free concentrated oil, rolled onto the pulse points - a small bottle, a dab, done. There is nothing to spray, nothing to hold at arm's length, no cloud to walk through, and the scent stays close to the skin rather than announcing itself across a room. An older recipient generally does not need to be shown any of that, which is not true of a designer-style eau de parfum, and it is why a ₹379 attar can land better than something four times the price. On which one: Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh at ₹385 for 3ml - warm, familiar, the safest pick for a mother or a mother-in-law. Nawaab is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron at ₹399 - the formal one, and the usual pick for a father or a father-in-law. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose and oudh at ₹389, an evening scent. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk at ₹379, the lightest and the most daytime of the four. If you are buying for two sets of parents at once, the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 puts Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The generation gap in fragrance is not about taste. It is about format - and an attar is the format that does not need a demonstration.
For a mother or mother-in-law, Ameeri at ₹385 - rose, sandalwood and saffron. For a father or father-in-law, Nawaab at ₹399 - white oud and Mysore sandalwood.
SOSA Ameeri ₹385

Why an attar lands differently with an older recipient than a perfume does

There are three separate things going on when you give an attar to somebody a generation older than you, and only one of them is about which scent you picked. The other two are about the format and about the arithmetic of buying for four people instead of one.

1
The first variable
The format needs no explaining
A perfume gift usually comes with an unspoken lesson attached - hold it here, spray at this distance, do not rub the wrists. An attar comes with none of that. It is a roll-on oil, applied on the pulse points, and the bottle is small enough to live in a handbag or a drawer rather than needing a place on a dressing table. Nobody has to change how they get ready in the morning to use it.

The alcohol-free part matters too, and it matters to different people for different reasons - some prefer oil on the skin, some simply dislike the sharp top of an alcohol spray, some want a fragrance that stays close rather than filling the room. Whatever the reason, it is worth saying plainly when you hand it over: this one is oil, not spray. That single sentence is usually all the instruction anybody needs.
Tip: Say one line when you give it: it is an oil, not a spray, and it goes on the wrist.
2
The second variable
Which of the four characters reads generationally right
The four SOSA attars are genuinely different rather than four shades of the same idea. Ameeri is Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh - warm, and the closest to what an older Indian household already associates with a good fragrance. Nawaab is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron - drier and more formal, the one that suits a father-in-law you do not know well. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh, an evening scent. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk, light and daytime.

If you want a rule rather than a paragraph: rose and sandalwood is the least risky thing you can give somebody older, and a sharp citrus is the most risky. Adaa is the better pick for a younger parent who already wears something light, and the wrong pick if you are trying to be safe.
3
The third variable
Two sets of parents, one budget, and the tact problem
Most people reading this are not buying one attar. They are buying for a mother, a father, a mother-in-law and a father-in-law, and the real constraint is that the four gifts have to look like they cost the same. That is easy here: the whole attar range sits between ₹379 and ₹399 in 3ml, so four different scents at four slightly different prices read as one gift repeated, not as a ranking.

If you would rather spend more, move everybody up a size together - 6ml is ₹669 to ₹699 and 12ml is ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. Moving one person up a size and not the others is the one version of this that gets noticed. The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 is the other route: three scents in one box, given to a household rather than to a person, which sidesteps the individual comparison entirely.
Tip: Keep everyone on the same size. Different scents read as thoughtful, different sizes do not.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
How to buy attars for four parents without getting it wrong
  1. Pick one size for everybody: 3ml from Rs 379, 6ml from Rs 669, 12ml from Rs 1,149.
  2. Give rose and sandalwood to anyone whose taste you do not know.
  3. Keep sharp citrus for the parent who already wears something light.
  4. Or give one Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 to a household instead of four separate gifts.
The SOSA principle
A fragrance gift fails far more often on format than on scent. People do not dislike the smell - they never got round to using it, because the bottle asked them to change something about their morning.
An attar asks for nothing except a wrist, which is why it survives the trip across a generation.

The four SOSA attars, and which one reads right for a parent or an in-law

Here is the whole SOSA attar range in one place, because the differences are real and the price gaps are not. Adaa at ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac over white musk - daytime grace, the lightest of the four. Ameeri at ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165 is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh - festive warmth and the most familiar. Mastani at ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179 is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose and oudh - the evening one. Nawaab at ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199 is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, described on its own page as the Liquid Gold Attar - the formal one.

The SOSA scent edit
The four attars against the four recipients you are probably buying for
Scent Why it suits the mood
Ameeri · ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165 Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. The warm one, and the least risky thing to hand to a mother or a mother-in-law whose taste you cannot describe. If you are buying one attar and you want to stop thinking about it, this is the one.
Nawaab · ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. Drier and more formal, which is exactly why it suits a father or a father-in-law, and why it works when the relationship is polite rather than close. Oud is a strong opinion, so skip it if you have ever heard them call a fragrance heavy.
Mastani and Adaa · ₹389 and ₹379 Mastani is night jasmine, damask rose and oudh - an evening scent for somebody who already enjoys wearing fragrance out. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk - light and daytime, the right pick for a younger parent and the wrong pick if you are playing it safe.
Attar Trio · ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189 Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box. This is the household gift rather than the personal one - give it to a couple, or to a set of in-laws you do not know well, and let them sort out which is whose. The honest trade is that one of the three may go unused.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

On size, the practical advice is unglamorous: 3ml is a real gift and not a sample, but if the attar is the only thing you are handing over, 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 sits better in the hand and lasts long enough that it does not need thinking about again. Save 12ml for the parent who you know already finishes a bottle. And one honest limit - an attar is still a worn fragrance, so if you genuinely cannot name a single thing the person likes, a reed diffuser for their home from ₹749 is the lower-risk gift and there is no shame in taking it.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

An older generation is not conservative about fragrance. They are conservative about being made to learn something new at seven in the morning.

The SOSA gifting range

There are only three questions worth asking before you spend anything. Will the gift be worn on a person, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to know what they already wear? Will it live in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser or a duo set is the safer buy? Or will it live in a car, where the choice is really between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray, and where SOSA Safar is the upgrade for somebody who genuinely spends hours driving? Answer that, then pick the price band.

The SOSA Dhanteras gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Every year around Dhanteras I get the same message, phrased twenty different ways: I have to buy something, I do not want to buy gold again, and I do not want to hand over a box of dry fruit that everybody quietly passes on. That is a real problem and it is worth taking seriously, because the difficulty is not the budget. It is that most festive gifts are bought for the moment of handing over and then have nowhere to go.

Fragrance is unusually good at this for one unglamorous reason: it gets used up. A reed diffuser sits on a console and does something for six to ten weeks. An attar lives in a handbag and gets worn on ordinary Tuesdays. A car perfume is noticed every single morning by somebody who did not ask for it. None of that is sentiment - it is just a product that has a job, unlike an object that has to earn shelf space for a decade.

Two honest cautions, though, because I would rather you bought well than bought more. A worn fragrance is a taste decision - if you do not know what the person already wears, a perfume is a guess, and a scent for their home or their car is the safer buy. And do not spend up a tier to look generous. A ₹379 attar chosen because it suits somebody is a better gift than a ₹3,999 machine bought for a person whose car is spotless and who never noticed a smell in it. Buy the thing that fits the life, not the thing that fits the occasion.

Frequently asked questions

What is an attar and how is it different from a perfume?
An attar is concentrated fragrance oil rather than an alcohol-based spray. SOSA attars are alcohol-free and applied on the pulse points with a roll-on rather than sprayed, so the scent sits closer to the skin instead of projecting across a room.
How much does a SOSA attar cost?
Adaa is Rs 379 for 3ml, Rs 669 for 6ml and Rs 1,149 for 12ml. Ameeri is Rs 385, Rs 679 and Rs 1,165. Mastani is Rs 389, Rs 685 and Rs 1,179. Nawaab is Rs 399, Rs 699 and Rs 1,199. The Attar Trio of three is Rs 1,055, Rs 1,859 or Rs 3,189.
Which SOSA attar should I give my mother-in-law?
Ameeri at Rs 385 for 3ml is the usual answer, because Taif rose with Indian sandalwood and saffron is the most familiar warm accord and the least likely to be disliked. Mastani at Rs 389 is the alternative if she enjoys jasmine in the evening.
Is a 3ml attar too small to give as a gift?
No, but it depends on what else is in the parcel. A 3ml at Rs 379 to Rs 399 is a proper gift alongside something else. If the attar is the whole gift, the 6ml at Rs 669 to Rs 699 sits better in the hand and lasts longer.
I am buying for both sets of parents. What is the simplest approach?
Buy four attars in the same size so nothing reads as a ranking, or buy one Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 per household. If you would like a recommendation for four specific people, message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
