Founder Diaries · Reed Diffuser & Home Fragrance Gifting

There is a clean test for the gift you are describing, and it has nothing to do with price. Ask whether the thing is met or whether it is viewed. A viewed object is noticed on the day it turns up, folded into the scheme within a fortnight and then stops registering entirely - not because anybody is ungrateful, but because that is what happens to everything in a room somebody walks through eight times a day. A met thing works the other way round: it is not in the sightline at all, and it turns up again every time the house is entered.
SOSA alcohol-free reed diffuser, from Rs 749
SOSA reed diffusers · passive · about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749 →
The version of a daily encounter that asks nothing of anybody. SOSA reed diffusers, ₹749 to ₹849 in 50 ml and ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 in 130 ml - alcohol-free, made in India, about 6 to 10 weeks, with nothing to plug in, nothing to schedule and nothing that can be left switched on. In a bungalow of separate rooms this is the accurate gift, one bottle per room that actually gets used. Where the main floor is instead one open volume, the machine answer is on this page too.
Quick answers — read this first
What kind of gift does a new home owner actually encounter every day? Something that is not competing for attention as an object. A scented room is met on entering rather than looked at, which is why reed diffusers from ₹749 and SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 both answer this question, at very different scales and with very different amounts of operating involved.

Which one suits a bungalow? The one that matches the plan. Vaayu publishes up to 1000 m3, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, which describes an open floor rather than a total built-up area. A bungalow whose internal doors stay shut is a set of separate rooms, and a passive bottle in each of the rooms that get used is the more accurate gift.

Does a machine need somebody to run it every day? No, and that is the point of the scheduling. Control is by Bluetooth app or the buttons on the unit, with run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. Set once, it recurs without anybody thinking about it. A reed diffuser needs even less: nothing at all.
The short answer
Short answer: Choose something that is met rather than viewed. A scented room is encountered on entering and never has to be displayed or explained. SOSA reed diffusers are Rs 749 to Rs 1,349 and run about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to switch on, and SOSA Vaayu is Rs 11,999 for up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air at under 38 dB.
The pick: A reed diffuser from ₹749 for a bungalow of separate rooms, and Vaayu at ₹11,999 when the main floor is genuinely one open volume.
Why: Neither has to be displayed, neither enters a scheme somebody already resolved, and both recur daily - the reed because it is passive and never switched on, the machine because it is scheduled once and then repeats.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
For a new bungalow, what can I give that they encounter every day instead of an ornament that gets admired once and then ignored?
The distinction you are reaching for is between an object that is viewed and a layer that is met. Viewed things are on a surface, need placing, and fall out of attention quickly because attention is finite in a room somebody crosses eight times a day. Met things are not in the sightline at all: light is one, temperature is another, and scent is the third and the only one still unassigned in a finished house. An architect resolved the volume, a designer resolved the surfaces, an electrical consultant resolved the evening light, and nobody at all was retained to decide what the place smells like. Two honest answers follow, at very different prices. SOSA reed diffusers are ₹749 to ₹849 in 50 ml and ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 in 130 ml, run about 6 to 10 weeks, and are passive - nothing to plug in, nothing to switch on, and they carry on whether or not anybody is in the building. SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is the machine: waterless cold-air diffusion, a dry residue-free mist with no water and no heat, published for up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours with day scheduling and adjustable intensity, under 38 dB, DC 12V / 1A at 5W, 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, CE, RoHS and SGS marked, made in India, and supplied with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances of 100 ml each. Which one is correct is decided by the plan, not the budget: a coverage rating assumes one connected body of air, so a bungalow of closed rooms is a reed question and an open floor is a machine question. Fragrance adds a scent rather than removing, neutralising or purifying one. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Ask one question about anything you are considering: is this met, or is this looked at? Almost every ornament fails it on about day nine.
Both honest answers: a reed diffuser from ₹749 for a bungalow of separate rooms, Vaayu at ₹11,999 for an open main floor of about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft.
Reed diffusers from ₹749

What separates a thing that is used from a thing that is looked at

Three things decide this, and the third one - who is actually going to operate anything - has changed more of these decisions than either of the first two.

1
First
Met or viewed? The test that sorts the whole shelf
An ornament is not a bad gift because it is decorative. It is a difficult gift because of what a room does to it. Anything placed on a surface is processed as an object on the first day, filed into the scheme by the second week, and after that it is simply part of the wall. That is ordinary human attention, not ingratitude, and no amount of money spent changes the curve.

A short list of things escapes it, and they have one feature in common: they are not in the sightline. You do not look at the temperature of a room, you meet it. You do not look at the light, you are in it. Scent behaves the same way, with the difference that it is noticed hardest at the threshold - which is exactly where somebody entering their own finished house is most attentive.

There is a second reason it fits a new bungalow specifically. Every visible category in that building was resolved by somebody with the authority to resolve it - volumes, finishes, joinery, lighting, art. Scent had no specialist, no drawing and no budget line. So it is both the thing most likely to recur daily and the only thing you can add without standing on somebody else's decision.
Tip: If it has to be placed, it will be looked at. If it has to be looked at, it stops being noticed.
2
Second
Does the bungalow read as one volume or as a set of rooms?
This is the whole choice between the ₹749 answer and the ₹11,999 one, and total area does not settle it. Vaayu publishes a coverage figure - up to 1000 m3, stated on the product page as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - and the qualifier carries more weight than the number. A rating assumes one connected body of air.

Bungalows split neatly into two types here. In the first, the entrance opens into a living area that runs into dining, with a stairwell or a double-height space above it and nothing closed in between. That is one volume, that is the case the figure describes, and it is also the case a small passive bottle cannot serve, because a bottle scents the couple of metres around itself.

In the second, the plan is a series of rooms with doors that stay closed. The figure does not transfer, and the better gift is one diffuser in each room that matters - an entrance hall, a study, a bedroom - at ₹749 to ₹849 in 50 ml or ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 in 130 ml, running about 6 to 10 weeks each. Note also that no guidance is published on what a second machine adds, so a very large connected floor is a WhatsApp conversation instead of a calculation.
3
Third
Who is going to operate it, honestly?
A gift is only encountered daily if it actually runs daily, so be realistic about the household. Vaayu solves this by being scheduled rather than switched. Control is by Bluetooth app or the buttons on the unit, with run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock, and it operates under 38 dB. Set once, it recurs without anybody remembering it.

A reed diffuser solves it by having nothing to solve. It is passive, runs about 6 to 10 weeks, needs no socket and cannot be left on, and it works whether or not anybody is in the building. For somebody who will never open an app, that is not the cheaper compromise, it is the better product.

What would make it a chore. The water-based ultrasonic machines - Boond at ₹899, Sukoon at ₹1,899, Megh at ₹5,999 - need water and regular topping up. That is a weekly task handed to somebody who did not choose it, and daily encounter turns into daily maintenance. Vaayu is waterless and comes with four 100 ml fragrances; afterwards waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm. On how long a 400ml fill lasts, the page says two different things - about 75 days in its specification data and 90 or more in its body copy - so ask on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 rather than promising anybody a number.
Tip: A daily encounter that needs a weekly chore to sustain it is not a gift, it is an assignment.
SOSA Vaayu, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted
Read the number strictly, not generously
About 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - of air that is actually connected
Vaayu publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing in home fragrance does: up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. The caveat matters more than the number. A rating assumes one connected body of air. A ground floor that runs living into dining into a stairwell is one volume and is exactly what the figure describes. A bungalow of the same total area with six closed doors is not one volume, it is six rooms, and the figure does not transfer. Work out how much of the house is genuinely open before you work out anything else - and note that no guidance is published on what a second unit adds.

Work it out in this order
Four checks, and the answer falls out of the last one
  1. Apply the test: is this thing met on the way past, or is it looked at?
  2. Stand at the front door and see how far you can see with no door shut.
  3. Open floor points to a machine. Closed rooms point to reeds from Rs 749.
  4. Ask who will operate it. If the answer is nobody, buy the passive one.
The SOSA principle
Anything placed on a surface is an object on day one and part of the wall by day fourteen. The things that keep being noticed are the ones that were never in the sightline, and in a finished house scent is the only one of those that nobody was hired to decide.
That is why this category survives the attention problem that defeats ornaments, and it is also why the honest recommendation is sometimes a Rs 749 bottle rather than a machine ten times the price.

Which set, and who has to operate what

If the answer here turns out to be the machine, three four-scent sets are published and all are ₹11,999, so the decision is taste rather than tier: Ritz-Carlton with Westin, St. Regis and 1 Hotels inspirations; Westin with Shangri-La, Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton; and St. Regis with W Hotels, 1 Hotels and Four Seasons. These are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations, composed by SOSA, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. For a daily encounter specifically, there is an argument for restraint. A register that is striking on a first meeting can be a great deal to walk into every single morning, and the four 100 ml bottles exist precisely so the household can find its own level rather than commit to yours. If the answer is a reed instead, the same logic applies at a tenth of the price: the least declarative scent is usually the right one for a home you have not lived in, and Morning Freshness is the quietest of the five.

The SOSA gift edit
Four candidates for a daily encounter, and where each one falls over
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
A reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹1,349 Passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in or switch off, and it runs whether or not anybody is home. The most reliable daily encounter in the range for a bungalow of separate rooms. It fails in a large open volume, where one bottle reaches its own corner and no further.
SOSA Vaayu · ₹11,999 Up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, under 38 dB, scheduled in 1, 4, 8 or 24-hour windows so the daily recurrence needs no daily decision, and complete in the box. It fails where the plan is closed rooms, and where nobody in the house will set a schedule even once.
A water-based ultrasonic · ₹899 to ₹5,999 Genuinely inexpensive and fine for one room. It fails the specific brief on this page: it needs water and regular topping up, which converts a daily encounter into a weekly task for somebody who did not choose the machine and may not want the job.
A decorative object · any price The thing being argued against. It is met properly once, folded into the scheme inside a fortnight, and then it is furniture. It also has to be placed, which means entering a scheme somebody spent years resolving. It works only when you know the house and the taste very well indeed.
SOSA Vaayu ships with four Hotel Collection fragrances
The two details that matter in a finished house
Under 38 dB, and it runs only when you tell it to
Two published details decide whether this belongs in a house somebody spent years on. It runs under 38 dB, which is the answer to the reasonable worry about a machine humming in a double-height living room. And it is scheduled: Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, with auto-stop and a key-lock. That is what makes it workable in a house occupied for part of the year, or a room used only when people come over. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, and it ships with four 100 ml fragrances - so it is complete on the day it arrives.

Two notes on the edges of the range. SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 is published for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft and is built for hotels, showrooms and corporate floors; in a bungalow it is not the more serious choice, it is simply the wrong machine. At the other end, SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is portable and cordless and travels with a person to a car or a hotel room, so it is an excellent daily encounter for somebody who commutes and no kind of answer for a house; it is also imported rather than made in India. And if the daily thing you want is about the two people rather than the building, SOSA attars from ₹379 are worn on the body instead of placed in a room, which is a different gift and often a better-judged one when you know what somebody actually wears.

The number this whole decision turns on, and where it stops being true
Up to 1000 m3 - about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - of connected air
SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing else in home fragrance does: up to 1000 m3, stated on the product page as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. It is a waterless cold-air machine producing a dry, residue-free mist with no water and no heat, running under 38 dB on DC 12V / 1A at 5W, with a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h or 24h, day scheduling and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, in black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, CE, RoHS and SGS marked, and its country of origin is India. But a coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. That figure describes an open-plan living-dining floor, a duplex's main level, a double-height hall - the kind of volume a small passive bottle cannot reach. It does not describe a bungalow with every internal door closed, because that is not one volume; it is six. Above about 3,000 sq ft of genuinely connected space, or across separated wings, the honest answer is a conversation rather than a number, because no multi-unit guidance is published. SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 is published for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft and is a commercial machine rather than a house gift.

One message, one honest recommendation

A room swallows an object in about a fortnight. It never quite swallows a scent, because you meet that one at the door before you have started looking at anything.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.

A coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. Vaayu's figure describes an open-plan volume - a living-dining floor, a duplex's main level, a double-height hall. A house with every internal door shut is not one volume, and the figure does not transfer to it. Every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, and its country of origin is India. Fragrance adds a scent to a space; it does not remove, neutralise or purify one, and the dry residue-free mist is a statement about residue rather than about air quality. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Prices above are published retail prices; bulk orders are welcome and quantities are settled on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531. SOSA is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The honest spec sheet
What the Vaayu page publishes, and what it does not
Everything below is on the live product page. Anything not on this list is not something a page like this should state.
  • Coverage - up to 1000 m3, published as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so it describes an open-plan floor rather than a house of closed rooms.
  • The machine - waterless cold-air diffusion, dry and residue-free, no water and no heat. 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm, 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted. DC 12V / 1A, 5W. Under 38 dB. Auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS. Country of origin India.
  • Control - a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h or 24h, day scheduling and adjustable intensity. This is what makes it workable in a house that is empty for stretches, or a room used only at weekends.
  • In the box - every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets, all at ₹11,999. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
  • The fragrance - alcohol-free, water-free oils formulated for cold-air diffusion. SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm and ₹1,849 for 300 gm and are published for Vaayu and Safar. The water-based ultrasonic bottles belong to a different kind of machine.
  • Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long a 400ml fill lasts as a single figure - the page says about 75 days in one place and 90 or more in another; what a second unit adds; any warranty period, service interval or filter; any installation service; any app name, phone compatibility or Bluetooth range; and any running or electricity cost. Those go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

A note from Sonal

The messages I find hardest to answer are the ones that begin with an apology. They have just finished building the house. I don't want to sound cheap, but I also can't buy them anything that matters at that scale. And underneath it is a real anxiety: that after years of drawings and delays and site visits, whatever you turn up with will look like a token.

What I would say is that the anxiety is aimed at the wrong thing. You are not competing with the house. Nobody is. The people who built it spent two years choosing between four shades of the same stone, and there is no object you can hand over that will register on that scale. Trying is how people end up buying a vase that gets moved to a spare room.

The reason I keep coming back to scent for these particular houses is unromantic. It is the last layer, and it is the only one nobody planned. An architect resolves the volume, a designer resolves the surfaces, a lighting consultant resolves the evening, and then everybody stops - because scent is not on anybody's drawing. So it is one of the few things left that adds to a finished house without arguing with a single decision already made in it.

The part I would be careful about is the number. Vaayu publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing in home fragrance does, and I would rather you read it strictly than generously. About 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, of air that is actually connected. A ground floor that opens living into dining into a stairwell is that. A bungalow with six closed doors is not that, whatever its total square footage says on paper, and a page that blurs the two is doing you no favours.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of gift keeps being noticed after the first week?
Something that is not in the sightline. Objects on a surface are processed once and then become part of the room, which is ordinary attention rather than ingratitude. Scent is met at the threshold every time the house is entered, which is why it survives that curve. SOSA reed diffusers start at Rs 749 and SOSA Vaayu is Rs 11,999.
Is a reed diffuser too small a gift for a new bungalow?
Not if the bungalow is a set of rooms. A 50 ml reed is Rs 749 to Rs 849 and a 130 ml is Rs 1,249 to Rs 1,349, each running about 6 to 10 weeks, and one in each room that gets used is more accurate than a single machine placed where it cannot reach. Where the main floor is genuinely open, the machine is the honest answer instead.
Does the machine have to be switched on and off every day?
No. Control is by Bluetooth app or the buttons on the unit, with run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. It is set once and then repeats. SOSA does not publish an app name, phone compatibility or any connection range, so those questions go to WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
Will a machine be noticeable in a quiet house?
SOSA publishes operation at under 38 dB. It is also 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, in black or white, and it stands on a surface or goes wall and HVAC mounted. SOSA publishes no installation service, so how it is fixed anywhere is not something stated here.
How often does the tank need attention?
The tank is 400 ml and refillable. The product page states its life two different ways - about 75 days in its specification data and 90 or more days in its body copy - and either way it follows the intensity setting and the scheduled hours. Ask SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 instead of planning around one figure. A reed diffuser, by contrast, needs no attention at all.

About the coverage figure: a rating assumes one connected body of air. The published figure describes an open-plan volume such as a living-dining floor, a duplex's main level or a double-height hall, and does not describe a property whose rooms are separated by closed doors, whatever its total floor area. No guidance is published on what a second unit adds. About tank life: the Vaayu product page states the life of one 400 ml fill in two different ways - approximately 75 days in its specification and FAQ data, and 90 or more days in its body copy - and in either case it depends on the intensity setting and the scheduled hours, so no single figure is stated on this page. What is not published, and is therefore not stated here: any warranty period, service interval or filter; any installation service; any app name, phone compatibility or Bluetooth range; any running or electricity cost; and any multi-unit coverage. Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent to a space. It does not remove, neutralise, mask or purify odour, it does not clean the air, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial or air-purifying claim; a dry residue-free mist is a statement about residue and not about air quality. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep or wellbeing, nor about how any recipient or guest will feel, nor about what a gift does for any business result. No page here characterises any recipient's wealth or describes people who own particular kinds of property; where a property value appears it is the figure the reader themselves supplied as context. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. SOSA Home & Body is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune, Maharashtra, sending orders across India, with no shop, showroom, stockist, counter or warehouse in any other city.
