The volatility curve - 22 degrees vs 38 degrees

A reed diffuser is, mechanically, an evaporation device. Fragrance oil sits in a glass bottle. Reeds pull the oil up by capillary action. The top of each reed is exposed to room air, and molecules leave the reed surface into the air. That last step is the volatility step. It is what your nose actually meets.

The rate of that step is governed by temperature. The general physics here is well understood: vapour pressure of an aromatic compound roughly doubles for every 10-degree increase in temperature, though the exact multiplier depends on the compound. For the mid-weight aromatic molecules common in pregnancy-friendly reed diffusers - linalool from lavender, alpha-bisabolol from chamomile, limonene from citrus - the practical real-world doubling sits in the 22 to 38 degree range. That is exactly the range an Indian bedroom moves through between January and June.

In concrete terms: a bottle that releases 100 molecules per second at 22 degrees in your AC-cooled bedroom releases close to 200 molecules per second at 38 degrees on a power-cut afternoon. Now layer on the pregnant nose. 4 summer-pregnancy adjustments to make today

These are the four moves we recommend to any pregnant customer in India between late March and September. They are cumulative - doing all four is much more effective than doing any one in isolation.

1. Cut to 2 reeds, even if you were comfortable with 4 in winter

The simplest counter-move to a doubled volatility curve is a halved reed count. Reed count is roughly linear with throw, so 2 reeds release about half the air-molecule load of 4. That cancels out the temperature-driven doubling. You end up with roughly the same perceived intensity in May as you had in February - which is exactly what you want.

Pull the extra reeds out gently, wipe them with a paper towel, and store them in a sealed zip-lock in a dark drawer. They will be ready to redeploy in October when the room cools again.

2. Move the diffuser to the coolest shelf in the room

Look at the diffuser's current location. Is it on top of a wardrobe? On a high shelf? In direct sun? Within 6 feet of a south-facing window? Any of these means the bottle is sitting in a warmer micro-climate than the room average, which pushes it further up the volatility curve.

Move it to a low shelf, ideally below waist height, on an internal wall (not exterior), at least 6 feet from any window and at least 6 feet from any fan. The closer to floor level, the cooler the air pocket the bottle sits in. This single move can drop the local temperature around the bottle by 4 to 6 degrees in a hot afternoon.

3. Build a ventilation rhythm, do not run continuous

In a stable cool room, a reed diffuser runs continuously and the room reaches a steady-state concentration that your nose adapts to. In a hot pregnant room, that steady state keeps rising as the day heats up, and your nose never quite adapts because the load keeps climbing.

The fix is to ventilate in a rhythm. Open the bedroom window or door for 8 to 10 minutes mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and an hour before bed. Each ventilation event flushes the accumulated load. The diffuser will rebuild the scent envelope within 30 to 45 minutes, but starting from a lower baseline. This is the single most effective adjustment for first-trimester homes in a hot city.

4. Flip the diffuser less often in summer

The standard advice to flip reeds weekly was written for European bedrooms at 18 to 22 degrees. In a 35-degree Indian bedroom, flipping resaturates the reed exactly when the room is least able to absorb the extra load. Flip every 14 to 18 days during summer, not weekly. Let the reeds run a little drier than usual. You will lose nothing in scent quality and gain a noticeable drop in peak intensity.

The 41-degree week in Surat last June is the one that taught me the heat-hormone equation properly. A customer there, 19 weeks pregnant, had been using Evening Calm with 3 reeds since March. She wrote on a Thursday morning: "It is fine. I love it." Her AC failed on Friday evening. By Saturday afternoon, the inside of her bedroom was 38 degrees and she could not stay in the room with the diffuser on.
