Why should you flip diffuser reeds?
Because the top ends of the reeds dry out as the scent evaporates, and flipping them brings the oil-saturated ends back to the top where they can evaporate freely again. This gives you an immediate, noticeable lift in scent throw. In a humid bathroom, flipping every three or four days keeps the fragrance feeling fresh rather than letting it slowly fade. It costs nothing, takes ten seconds, and is the easiest maintenance trick there is.

What is actually happening when you flip a reed
A reed is a wick. The porous stick draws oil up from the bottle by capillary action, and the oil evaporates from the part of the reed exposed to the air. That is how the scent gets into the room. But the exposed top of the reed dries out over time as the volatile top notes flash off, and a dry tip evaporates less. Throw fades gently, day by day.
The wet end holds the scent. The portion sitting in the oil stays saturated. When you flip the reed, that fully oil-soaked end is now up in the air, evaporating at full strength again. That is the burst you smell right after flipping.
It is a refresh, not a refill. Flipping redistributes the oil already in the reed; it does not add any. It makes the diffuser feel stronger for a while by giving you a fresh, wet surface to evaporate from.
Humidity makes it matter more. In a steamy bathroom, evaporation is slower and reeds behave a little differently. A regular flip keeps the scent lively where it might otherwise feel muted.
If you flip and get almost no lift at all, that is a useful signal: the reeds may be clogged and tired, or the bottle may be nearly empty. Flipping tells you a lot about where your diffuser is in its life.
How to flip reeds properly
There is a right way to do this so you do not end up with oil on your hands, your shelf or your clothes.
Hold by the dry end. Grip the top, dry portion of each reed. Lift it out, let any excess drip back into the bottle for a second, then turn it and set the wet end up.
Flip the whole set. Do all the reeds at once so the lift is even, rather than one at a time.
Wash your hands after. The oil is concentrated fragrance. Wipe any drips off the bottle and shelf, and rinse your hands. Keep it away from eyes and off polished surfaces.
Myth: flipping more often always makes it stronger. Not really. Flipping every day burns through the oil faster without much extra benefit. Every three or four days is the sweet spot in a bathroom.
One honest point I want to make clear: flipping refreshes the scent that is there, but it cannot conjure oil that has run out. When flipping stops giving you any lift and the bottle is low, that is the signal to refill or replace - not to keep flipping harder. And a reed diffuser, flipped or not, freshens a clean room; it does not remove a smell at its source.
