Why Does My Home Entrance Smell Stale?

The entrance does more work than any other three metres of your home, and the reason is physiological rather than decorative. It is the only part of your house that anyone ever arrives at with a fresh nose. You stopped smelling your own home about a minute after you walked in this morning - that is olfactory adaptation, it happens to everybody, and it is why you genuinely cannot judge your own foyer. Your guest has not adapted to anything. Whatever sits in that first breath of air is the impression they form of the whole house, and they form it before either of you has said hello. Now the part almost nobody says out loud: the entrance is usually the dirtiest air in the house. Not the untidiest - the dirtiest. It is where everything arriving from outside is put down and where several unglamorous things quietly live together. Shoes that walked through a street, a car park and a lift lobby. A shoe cabinet with no ventilation. Umbrellas and wet doormats in monsoon. Very often the dustbin, the mop, the bucket and the utility area, because that is where the plumbing and the service door are. Add the corridor air that gets pushed in every time the front door opens, and the honest summary is that your entrance is a small unventilated room holding the outputs of five different problems. Start with the shoes, because in most Indian homes they are the single biggest contributor and the one people misdiagnose. A shoe does not smell because it is dirty on the outside. It smells because bacteria are living on the perspiration residue soaked into the lining and the insole, and what those bacteria need is warmth, moisture and darkness. A foot puts out a genuinely surprising amount of moisture over a day, and closed leather and synthetic shoes hold almost all of it in the lining. Take the shoe off at seven in the evening and it is warm and damp on the inside. Put it straight into a cabinet and you have handed that colony every condition it wants for the next twelve hours. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a shoe that is spotless on the outside can still be the reason your foyer smells. Which brings you to the cabinet itself. A closed shoe cabinet with no ventilation is a warm, dark, damp box, and every pair inside it is contributing. Worse, most Indian shoe units are built into a foyer wall with a solid back and solid doors, so the moisture that comes off six pairs of shoes has nowhere to go. Then somebody opens the door to take out a pair, and the concentrated air of that box empties straight into the foyer in one go. If your entrance smells worst at the exact moment somebody is leaving the house, this is why. The wet things are the second source and they are seasonal, which is why people miss them. A doormat is a textile that lives on the floor by the door and catches street water, mud and everything wiped off a shoe, and in most homes it has never been washed. Wash coir and rubber-backed mats, dry them fully in the sun, and replace a mat that has gone permanently grey. Keep a second one so there is always a dry one in rotation during monsoon. Umbrellas are worse, because a folded wet umbrella left standing in a corner of the foyer stays wet for a day and then smells of exactly what a wet cloth left folded smells of. Open them, dry them outside or on a balcony, and only then stand them away. Wet raincoats and school bags belong on a hook with air around them, not in a cupboard. Third, look at what else has been parked at your entrance because it was convenient. In a great many flats the kitchen bin, the mop, the bucket and the wet cleaning cloths live near the front door or in the utility beside it, because that is where the service entrance and the drain are. A bin lid does not seal, a mop left wet in a bucket goes sour within a day, and a floor drain in a rarely used utility loses the water in its trap and starts venting the line. Move the bin somewhere ventilated and out of the entrance air path if you possibly can, line it, empty wet waste daily, and wash the bin itself rather than only emptying it. Wring the mop out and dry it flat or hanging, never standing in its own water. And pour a mug of water down any drain that is not used regularly, once a week, to keep the trap sealed. And then the source that is not yours at all. Every time your front door opens, the air in the common corridor comes in with whoever is arriving. In an Indian apartment building that corridor air is carrying the lift lobby, the garbage chute, the service staircase and four neighbours' dinners, and in a tower there is a stack effect pulling air upward through the shaft and pushing it out onto the upper floors. You cannot fix your neighbours. You can seal your own door properly: a brush strip or a rubber gasket along the bottom of the front door costs very little and stops the constant slow leak under it, and worn perimeter seals are worth replacing. Then give your own home a way to push air out rather than pull it in - open a window on the far side of the house for a while each day so the pressure runs outward, and keep a bathroom or kitchen exhaust running when you need the flow reversed. One last check, and it catches people out in open-plan flats: make sure the entrance is not sitting downstream of the kitchen. Air travels from wherever it can get in to wherever it can get out, and if the only opening while somebody cooks is a window near the front door, you have made the foyer the exhaust route for the kitchen. Everything that leaves the pan passes through your entrance on its way out and some of it stops there, on the doormat, the curtain, the console runner and the shoes. Open a window on the far side of the kitchen instead, run the chimney, and close the doors you do not want the air taking a shortcut through. Work through those five and the stale note usually disappears entirely, at which point fragrance has an honest job and a small one: holding a clean, consistent character in a space that is already clear.
