Who should be careful
This is a subject where I would rather be careful than clever, because it touches health. Here is who should be cautious with raw essential oils, and with any strong fragrance.
1. If you are pregnant. Some essential oils are not advised during pregnancy, and advice varies by trimester and by oil. I am not the right person to rule on it, and neither is a blog. If you are pregnant, be cautious with any strong fragrance and ask your doctor or midwife before diffusing.
2. Around infants and young children. Babies have small airways and developing systems, and several raw oils are specifically cautioned around them. Keep any diffuser out of reach, keep the scent light, ventilate the room, and defer to your paediatrician on anything to do with a child.
3. If you have pets - cats especially. Cats metabolise certain compounds differently from us and can be sensitive to some diffused oils; dogs and birds can be affected too. Diffuse only in a well-ventilated room your pet can leave, and ask your vet before using fragrance around them.
4. If you have asthma or reactive airways. Strong fragrance can trigger some people with asthma or sensitive lungs. Keep it light, ventilate, and stop if it bothers you. If you have a respiratory condition, check with your doctor about what is sensible for you.
The honest through-line: a diffused fragrance is not automatically harmless because it is pleasant. If you are pregnant, around infants, with pets or asthmatic, treat any strong scent - raw oils above all - with caution, ventilate, and get advice from a doctor or vet who knows your situation.
Why SOSA uses water-based fragrance
All of the above shaped a decision I made early: SOSA does not use raw essential oils in its diffuser fragrance. There are two honest reasons.
1. Raw oils clog the unit. Raw essential and carrier oils are thick and solvent-heavy. Tipped into an ultrasonic diffuser, they sit on the misting plate, clog it and can damage the unit. A water-based fragrance is made to atomise cleanly, so a few drops ride the mist without harming the plate.
2. Concentration and control. A water-based fragrance is a considered, IFRA-standard, phthalate-free composition rather than a raw concentrate, so it is designed to be diffused into a room at a gentle level. It is built for the job of scenting a space, not applied neat.
Honest boundary: water-based does not mean "safe for everyone regardless." Our fragrance is IFRA-standard and phthalate-free, but it is still a fragrance, not a therapy or a medicine. If you are pregnant, around infants or pets, or asthmatic, use it gently, keep the room ventilated, and ask a doctor or vet. I would rather say that plainly than imply any fragrance is risk-free for every household.
How to use it gently

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight.
