Warm materials take warm scents; cold materials take dry ones
Look at what the room is made of rather than what colour it is. Oak, teak, brass, wool, leather, paper — that is a warm-material home, and it takes a gourmand or a soft floral comfortably. Concrete, white plaster, steel, glass, pale stone, a lot of empty surface — that is a cold-material home, and a sweet scent in it feels like something spilled. The mismatch people make most often is giving a coffee-and-vanilla composition to a minimalist, because coffee and vanilla are widely liked, and then wondering why it never seems to be running. A fragrance that agrees with what a room is made of gets absorbed into the room. One that argues with it stays recognisable as a thing somebody brought.
Part three — when the answer is none of the five
There are homes this method does not reach, and recipients for whom the whole category is wrong. Do not buy any of these for somebody who has told you they dislike scented things. Mountain Breeze is the composition that gets furthest with sceptics — dry, resinous, no sweetness, and it reads as timber rather than as perfume — but it converts the undecided, not the decided. And the structural gaps, which matter more in this article than in most, because this is the one where somebody is trying to match a specific room. There is no oud in the reed range, no musk-forward composition, and nothing aquatic. Those are the three registers people most often ask me for and I do not have; stretching pine to stand in for oud, or lemon to stand in for sea air, would produce a gift that is nearly right, which is the worst outcome in fragrance. I did not compose this range around personalities. I composed it around rooms, which is a less romantic brief and a far more accurate one. When somebody writes to ask which scent suits their mother, I can only guess. When they send a photograph of the hall, I can answer in a sentence, and I am right most of the time. Rooms are simply better evidence than adjectives.
The reason it works is that a room is already a fragrance argument made in materials. Teak and wool and paper are warm, resinous, slightly sweet things; concrete and plaster and steel are cold, mineral, dry things. Put coffee and vanilla into the second kind of room and it will smell perfectly nice and slightly beside the point, like a rug that is the wrong weight. Put pine and cedar into it and people stop noticing where the smell is coming from, which is the highest compliment this category has.
The gaps are the part I am least comfortable with and the part I insist on printing. There is no oud in this range and no musk and nothing aquatic, and each of those is a register somebody's home is genuinely built around. I would rather you took your money to a house that makes a proper oud than accept a near miss from me.
