Founder Diaries · Housewarming Gifting · The Reed Decision
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
You have decided on a reed diffuser and you have decided it is coming from us. Everything after that is a small, finite problem: five compositions, two sizes and three two-bottle duos — thirteen buyable shapes in total, and you need exactly one of them. This page makes the decision in three moves, in a fixed order, because the order is what stops people going round in circles. Scent is chosen by the household. Size is chosen by how long you want it to run. One bottle or two is chosen by how many doors the flat has. Nothing else enters into it.
Quick answers — read this first
Move one, the scent: Garden Bloom ₹799 when you know little; Mountain Breeze ₹849 for people who reject scented things; Evening Calm ₹799 for a small flat; Morning Freshness ₹749 for an open kitchen; Fresh Brew ₹849 only when you know their taste is warm.

Move two, the size: 50ml runs 6–8 weeks, 130ml runs 14–18. At the same six reeds they project the same. Size buys duration, never reach — and for a gift, 50ml is usually the better shape.

Move three, one or two: one bottle scents one room. A duo — Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 — is for a flat with a door between two spaces, not for a studio.

If you want to stop reading: Garden Bloom 50ml, ₹799. It is the right answer more often than any other single line on this page.
The short answer
Short answer: buy Garden Bloom 50ml at ₹799 unless you know something that overrides it. It is the joint quietest composition we make, floral without sweetness, and the one fewest people hold a strong opinion about. Override it with Mountain Breeze ₹849 for someone who dislikes fragrance, Morning Freshness ₹749 for a kitchen-and-bathroom home, or a duo from ₹1,498 for a couple with two rooms.
How it works: a glass bottle holds the fragrance oil and six fibre reeds stand in it. The oil climbs the fibre and evaporates off the exposed length into the room — no flame, no electricity, no switch. Fibre rather than rattan, because rattan's pores clog in Indian humidity. The only upkeep is turning the reeds over once a week, and skipping it breaks nothing.
Shop: 50ml — Morning Freshness ₹749 · Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799 · Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849. 130ml ₹1,249–₹1,349. Duos ₹1,498–₹1,598, or ₹2,498–₹2,598 in 130ml. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Which SOSA reed diffuser should I buy as a housewarming gift?
1. Move one — pick the scent from what you know about the household, not about yourself. Garden Bloom ₹799 is the default for a home you have not been inside. Mountain Breeze ₹849 is the one that gets past people who say they hate anything scented. Evening Calm ₹799 is the quietest and suits a studio. Morning Freshness ₹749 suits a flat where the kitchen opens into the living room. Fresh Brew ₹849 is the strongest and sweetest and the one to give only when you have evidence.

2. Move two — pick the size by duration, never by strength. A 50ml runs 6–8 weeks and a 130ml runs 14–18. At the same six reeds they release at about the same rate and fill about the same amount of room. If anybody tells you the bigger bottle is stronger, they are selling rather than explaining.

3. For a gift, 50ml is usually the better shape. It reads as complete, it costs less, and — the part nobody says out loud — if the household turns out not to love the fragrance, six to eight weeks is a mercy and eighteen is a sentence. Buy the 130ml when you know the scent will land, or when you would like it still running the next time you visit.

4. Move three — one bottle scents one room. There is no fan behind a reed diffuser; the fragrance thins with distance and stops at a closed door. The only currency that buys coverage is another bottle, which is what the duos are: two 50ml in one purchase at ₹1,498, ₹1,548 or ₹1,598, and ₹2,498–₹2,598 in the larger size.

5. Do not send two different scents into one open space. Two compositions in a single connected volume need to share a note or you get a seam where they meet. Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus; Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and a soft musk. In a studio, give one bottle.

6. Read the strength numbers correctly. Fresh Brew 9.5, Mountain Breeze 9.4, Morning Freshness 9.0, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm 8.9 are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds — not an industry standard, not a concentration, not a quality ranking.

7. Know the gaps. There is no oud, no musk-forward composition and no aquatic in this range, and replacement reeds are not sold separately. If one of those is what the household wants, we are the wrong shop for this gift and I would rather say so than stretch the nearest bottle to cover it.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 unless you know better. 50ml for 6–8 weeks, 130ml for 14–18 — duration, not strength. One bottle per room; a duo from ₹1,498 only where there is a door between two spaces.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Himalayan pine sage and cedar reed diffuser
The override that matters most often
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
If anybody in the household has ever announced that they do not like scented things, this is the bottle that changes the conversation. Himalayan pine over clarifying sage and deodar cedar — dry, resinous and closer to a woodshop than a perfume counter, with no sweetness anywhere in it. It sits at 9.4 on our internal scale, which is the second-highest position in the range, so it is also the choice for a large hall where a quieter composition would go unnoticed. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, 6–8 weeks at 50ml. 130ml ₹1,349 for 14–18 weeks.

Part one — the three moves, in order

The reason people stall on this decision is that they try to make all three choices at once, and the three are not independent. Scent narrows nothing else; size and count both depend on the flat rather than the person. Taken in order the whole thing collapses into about four minutes of thinking, and the order matters because getting it wrong means re-doing the first move after the third one changes your mind.

1
MOVE ONE · THE SCENT
Five compositions, one line each
Garden Bloom, ₹799 — British rose and night-blooming jasmine, 8.9 on our scale, familiar in an Indian home without being sweet. The blind buy. Evening Calm, ₹799 — Kashmir lavender and chamomile, also 8.9 and the softest thing we make; right for a studio, a bedroom or a nervous recipient. Morning Freshness, ₹749 — Malabar lemon, peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus at 9.0, the range's best behaviour beside cooking and the lowest honest entry price. Mountain Breeze, ₹849 — pine, sage and cedar at 9.4, dry with no sweetness, the one that survives a fragrance-sceptic. Fresh Brew, ₹849 — Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla at 9.5, the loudest and warmest, wonderful when it lands and the least safe thing to guess with.
The rule: choose for their rooms, not your shelf. The composition you would buy for yourself is information about you.
2
MOVE TWO · THE SIZE
50ml or 130ml — and what the money actually buys
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuserFresh Brew₹1,349 · 130mlBoth sizes ship with the same six fibre reeds and the same composition, and at the same reed count they release at about the same rate. What the larger bottle holds is more oil beneath those reeds, which is duration and nothing else — 14 to 18 weeks against 6 to 8. It is the single most common misunderstanding in this category and the most expensive one, because people buy up expecting a fuller room and get a longer season instead. For a housewarming I recommend 50ml more often than not: it is a complete gift, it reads as complete, and it has a stated end, which in a small flat is a kindness rather than a limitation. The 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 earns its place when you are confident the scent will land, when the household is close enough that you want it running into the winter, or when the gift needs a little more presence in the hand.
The tell: if the reason you are considering 130ml is "so it smells stronger", buy the 50ml and spend the difference on nothing.
3
MOVE THREE · ONE OR TWO
Count the doors, not the rupees
A reed diffuser is a point source with no propulsion. It does not project; it releases, and the room distributes. That means fragrance thins with distance and stops dead at a closed door, so the number of bottles a home needs is the number of separate spaces you want scented — nothing to do with budget. A studio or a compact 1BHK is one bottle, full stop; sending two different compositions into one connected volume produces a seam where they meet rather than a richer room. A 2BHK with a hall and a bedroom behind a door is the natural home of a duo: Day & Night at ₹1,498 splits the flat by time of day, Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 pairs two compositions that meet on green eucalyptus if the door is ever open, and Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598 pairs two that meet on warmth and a soft musk. A duo is two bottles in one purchase — not a hamper, not a curated set, because we sell neither.

Part two — every shape the range comes in

Thirteen ways to buy the same five compositions, with what each one is for. Prices are the whole of the reed range; there is nothing above, below or between them, and the least expensive is ₹749.

The shapes
Singles, larger singles and duos — what each is for
The shape Price How long it runs Rooms it covers When it is the right shape
One 50ml bottle ★ ₹749–₹849 6–8 weeks One Most invitations, most flats, and every case where you are guessing at the scent
One 130ml bottle ₹1,249–₹1,349 14–18 weeks One — the same one When you are confident of the scent, or want it running when you next visit
Day & Night · 2 × 50ml ₹1,498 6–8 weeks each Two, split by time of day A flat with a bedroom behind a door — bright by day, soft at night
Fresh & Grounded · 2 × 50ml ₹1,548 6–8 weeks each Two, and they meet cleanly A home where the door between the rooms is usually open — the two share green eucalyptus
Warmth & Bloom · 2 × 50ml ₹1,598 6–8 weeks each Two, joined by warmth A household you know likes warm, rounded fragrance — the least neutral duo
Any duo in 2 × 130ml ₹2,498–₹2,598 14–18 weeks each Two Family, and only where both the rooms and the tastes are known
The honest caveat: the oil refill — 300ml ₹2,399 or 500ml ₹3,499 — sits inside several of these price bands and is not a shape you can gift. It is oil alone: no glass vessel, no reeds, unusable by anyone who does not already own a diffuser. It is what the household buys for itself in November, after the bottle you gave them runs out. Replacement reeds are not sold separately either; our guidance is simply to refresh them every few months.

The three shapes most gifts end up as
The SOSA principle
Scent is chosen by the household, size by the calendar, and the number of bottles by the number of doors.
Three independent questions, each with one honest input. Answer them in that order and the thirteen shapes reduce to one without a single comparison tab.

Part three — where this range stops

Three boundaries, and I would rather draw them here than have you discover them after the wrapping is off. The first is the household. If anybody there has said they dislike scented things, no bottle on this page is the right gift — a reed diffuser cannot be switched off, which is exactly what makes it a good gift everywhere else. The same applies if there is a newborn in the house or if somebody has told you fragrance bothers them. Give something that is not fragranced; a ceramic mug at ₹474 or the cloud trinket dish at ₹664 does the job with nobody having to have an awkward conversation. Keep any diffuser away from children and pets, and stand it on a tray, because the oil marks wood and stone.

The second is the room. Past roughly 250 to 300 square feet of connected open volume, reeds run out of format, and the answer is not a third bottle on a third shelf. It is the Sukoon at ₹1,899, which covers 270–320 sq ft with timers and three 15ml fragrances in the box — a different sort of gift rather than a bigger one, since it needs a socket, water and somebody to switch it on. Most homes that own both end up running them in different rooms for different reasons. The related boundary is on-demand fragrance: reeds are constant, passive and deliberately low, with no way to surge before guests arrive. If that is what the household wants, say so honestly rather than selling them a 9.5 and hoping.

The third is our own range, and it is short. There is no oud, no musk-forward composition and no aquatic in the SOSA reed line, and I am not going to point you at the nearest thing and pretend. If the person you are buying for has one of those in mind, buy them one from a house that makes it well. Replacement reeds are not sold as a separate item either — an honest gap, and our guidance is simply to refresh reeds every few months. And the last thing, which belongs on every page in this cluster: a new flat smells of paint, polish and sometimes damp, and fragrance does not remove any of that. Ventilation and time do. A diffuser sits alongside the paint until the paint fades, and then it is the pleasant thing left in the room — worth saying when you hand it over, so the gift gets judged on the right week.

A bigger bottle is a longer season. It is never a louder room, and I would rather lose the upsell than blur that.

Honest notes for buyers: the strength positions used on this page — Fresh Brew 9.5, Mountain Breeze 9.4, Morning Freshness 9.0, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm 8.9 — are SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds in an ordinary Indian room, not an industry standard, not a concentration and not a quality ranking. The least expensive reed diffuser is ₹749 and nothing below that price is a reed diffuser in any size. Compositions are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free and IFRA-compliant on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base, in refillable glass with six fibre reeds, tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity. Duration figures are working guidance, not laboratory measurements, and shorten in a draught or in direct sun. SOSA sells no gift card, no hamper, no gift box and no curated reed set — a duo is two bottles in one purchase; gift wrapping, gift notes and delivery dates are unconfirmed, so check at checkout. Reed oil never goes into a Sukoon or Boond, and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Free shipping above ₹499. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Fresh and Grounded two-bottle reed diffuser duo
The duo that survives an open door
SOSA Fresh & Grounded duo · Morning Freshness + Mountain Breeze ₹1,548 / 2 × 50ml
Two 50ml bottles in one purchase — described exactly as that, since we sell no hampers and no curated sets. What makes this the duo I recommend most for a flat where the doors stay open is that the two compositions share a green eucalyptus thread, so where they meet in a corridor you get a transition rather than a seam. Lemon and peppermint for the kitchen end, pine and cedar for the study or bedroom. Both run 6–8 weeks on six fibre reeds; the 2 × 130ml version is ₹2,548 and runs 14–18.

A note from Sonal

Five compositions is a deliberately small range and people occasionally ask why we have not made fifteen. The answer is that I would rather be able to tell you honestly which of five to buy than watch you scroll through a wall of names with nothing to choose between them. A range you can hold in your head is a range you can be advised on. Thirteen shapes is already more than most people want to think about on a Saturday.

The move that goes wrong most often is the second one. Somebody wants the gift to feel more substantial, they see a bigger bottle, and they buy it expecting a fuller room. It is not a fuller room; it is the same room for three times as long. I have written that sentence in nearly every guide I have published because the correction saves people money, and because a customer who buys the 130ml for the right reason is happy in February while one who bought it for the wrong reason is disappointed in week two.

What I will not do is tell you the recipient will love it. I do not know them and neither does any list. What I know is the mechanism: oil climbs six fibre reeds and leaves into the room, for six to eight weeks or fourteen to eighteen, in a home that does not have to do anything about it. Everything is composed and handmade in Pune in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Which SOSA reed diffuser is best for a housewarming gift?
Garden Bloom 50ml at ₹799 for most homes — quiet, floral without sweetness, and the composition fewest people have a view about. Override it with Mountain Breeze ₹849 for a fragrance-sceptic, Evening Calm ₹799 for a very small flat, or Morning Freshness ₹749 where the kitchen opens into the living room.
Should I buy 50ml or 130ml as a gift?
50ml, unless you have a reason. It is ₹749–₹849, runs 6–8 weeks and reads as a complete gift. The 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks but projects the same at six reeds — it buys time, not presence. Buy the larger size when you are confident the scent suits them, or when you want it still running the next time you are in their flat.
Is a duo worth it, or should I give one bottle?
Count the doors. One bottle scents one room, so a duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 is right for a flat with a bedroom behind a door and wrong for a studio, where two different compositions meet in one volume and produce a seam. It also reads differently: for a sibling or a couple two bottles reads as considered, while for a colleague it can read as too much.
Which two SOSA scents work together in one home?
Two compositions in one connected space should share a note. Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus, which is why Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548 survives an open door. Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and a soft musk, which is Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598. If the two rooms are genuinely separate, any pairing works.
Does SOSA sell an oud, musk or aquatic reed diffuser?
No — those are the three genuine gaps in the reed range, and replacement reeds are not sold separately either. If the household specifically wants one of those families, buy it from a house that makes it properly rather than stretching one of ours to cover it. The five compositions we do make are lemon-mint, rose-jasmine, lavender-chamomile, coffee-vanilla and pine-sage-cedar.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on choosing between the five SOSA reed compositions, two bottle sizes and three duos for a housewarming gift. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds in an ordinary Indian room — not an industry standard, not a concentration and not a quality ranking. Duration figures are working guidance from in-house testing and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurements, and vary with room volume, airflow, heat and season. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air, remove smells or change how anyone feels, and no claim is made about how a gift will be received.

SOSA range & prices used in this guide (verified from the live store, August 2026): Reed diffusers — alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant compositions on a heat-stable coconut-derived (CCT) carrier, supplied in a refillable glass bottle with six fibre reeds; 50ml lasts 6–8 weeks, 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks. Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 · 130ml ₹1,249; Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 · 130ml ₹1,299; Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 · 130ml ₹1,299; Fresh Brew 50ml ₹849 · 130ml ₹1,349; Mountain Breeze 50ml ₹849 · 130ml ₹1,349. Duo sets: Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 (2 × 50ml); ₹2,498–₹2,598 (2 × 130ml). Oil-only refills 300ml ₹2,399 · 500ml ₹3,499 (the glass vessel and reeds are not included). The least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749, so no reed diffuser exists below that price in any format. Below it SOSA sells scented candles from ₹379 (roughly 15–18 hours), a Sandalwood jar candle ₹449, wax melts ₹474, ceramic mugs ₹474, ribbed and face mugs ₹569, bubble and taper candles ₹474–₹569, a ceramic trinket dish ₹664 and candle duos ₹664 (roughly 30–36 hours).
