These are not the criteria you would use on yourself, and that is the point. Some registers split a room, and gourmands split hardest

Some registers produce two firm camps rather than a spread of mild opinions, and the order is fairly consistent. Gourmands split hardest — people either love a coffee-and-vanilla room or find it sweet and food-adjacent in a way they do not want at home. Florals split next, for three separate reasons: indole, soap associations, and a genuine anti-floral constituency that is larger and more firmly held than florists like to admit. The three scents that are not blind buys, and exactly why

It is easy to write a gift guide that recommends and never rules out, and it is useless, because ruling out is the whole service. Fresh Brew at ₹849 is the least safe blind buy in the SOSA range, and I say that about a scent I am extremely fond of. It is 9.5 on the strength scale — the deepest thing we make — and it is a gourmand, Coorg coffee over Kerala vanilla and a soft caramel. Both of those facts point the same way. It is a superb gift for a coffee lover and precisely the wrong gift for someone whose feelings about coffee-in-a-room you have never heard expressed. Karan V. in Gurgaon gave the 130ml as a housewarming present and got a text at eleven at night saying his friend's entire study now smelled like a café, which is the exception that proves the rule: he knew the recipient. Bright citrus-mint is genuinely brilliant in a kitchen, a bathroom or at a desk at nine in the morning, and it is the wrong register beside a bed — it is designed to wake a room up, and a gift you cannot control the placement of should not have a job that specific.
