Test two: how much connected air
The number that decides whether a machine is over-specified
Multiply length by width by height for every space the air moves between with your doors as you keep them, and be honest about which doors are actually shut. Under roughly 1,000 to 1,200 sq ft of connected area, a well-placed reed or two does the job and a machine rated for 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft is more than the space can use. Above that, and particularly with high ceilings, an open plan or a stairwell that joins two levels, you are into machine territory and scattering small units will only produce pockets. A 1BHK is not a machine. A 3BHK with the doors open usually is. Test three: how many ordinary days
The machine is bought for the days nobody is coming over
This is the test people skip, and it is the one that predicts whether the purchase gets used. Count the days in a normal week when you would like the house to smell consistent without doing anything about it: working days, school mornings, a Sunday afternoon.
