I have been on both ends of this. As a founder you are usually asking the question late, with a list of forty things above it, and what you want is a decision you can make in ten minutes and not regret. Here is the honest version of that decision, and it is not really about the object. The object is the easy part. The part that only you can do is the sentence that comes with it.
Quick answers — read this first
What should a founder give their team for Diwali? Something useful, in one price band, with a short note written by you rather than by anybody else. A 50ML reed diffuser at ₹749 or a hanging car perfume at ₹449 both work. The note is the part that a procurement process cannot produce.
Should a founder write a note with the Diwali gift? Yes, and it should be specific to the year rather than general. Two or three sentences naming something that actually happened is worth more than a printed card, and it costs nothing but an evening.
How much should a founder spend on team Diwali gifts? ₹400 to ₹1,000 a head covers most teams. Spend inside one band for everybody rather than varying it by rank, and if you want to do something larger for one or two people, do it separately.
The short answer
Short answer: Pick one useful object in one price band for everybody, and write the note yourself. The object is interchangeable; the specific, true sentence is the part only a founder can supply.
The pick: a SOSA fragrance gift - alcohol-free, useful past January, from ₹379 a head.
Bulk: send headcount, per-head budget and cities, and we will confirm what stock can actually fill.
A corporate Diwali gift works when it is useful, appropriate to a professional relationship, and actually available in the quantity you need. SOSA's fragrance range runs from Rs 379 per head to Rs 3,999 for senior gifts, alcohol-free and handmade in India.
What should a founder actually give the team this Diwali?
Pick one good thing, in one price band, for everybody. Then spend an evening on the note.
On the object, I would keep it simple. A 50ML reed diffuser at ₹749 is flame-free, needs no plug and no water, and works in any home. A hanging car perfume at ₹449 is close to perfect for anyone who drives to work. An attar roll-on at ₹379 is a complete, gift-ready object at a price that does not need defending to anybody. A car spray set of three from ₹699 feels like a set without costing like one. Any of these is fine. Genuinely - the difference between them matters less than founders think.
What does not get delegated is the note. Not a printed card with the company logo and a line about the festival of lights. Two or three sentences, written by you, naming something that actually happened this year. The month everything broke and did not stay broken. The person who quietly took on the thing nobody wanted. Specific enough that it could not have been written about a different company.
I am not going to tell you what that does. A gift is a gift and a note is a note, and both are just useful and pleasant and remembered for a while. But a founder is the only person in the building who can write that particular note, and it is the one part of the whole exercise that nobody else can do for you.
One practical thing: write it before you order, not after. Once the invoices start it will not get written. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: any of the sensible objects will do, and the two or three specific sentences you write yourself are the part that is actually yours to give.
For a whole team that commutes, the honest starting point is a hanging car perfume at ₹449 - useful, gift-ready, and stocked in the thousands. For managers, a reed diffuser from ₹749.
Three things a founder can get right here, and only one of them involves choosing a product.
1
The note
Specific, short, and written before the invoices start
A general note reads as a template because it is one. A specific note takes twenty minutes and names something real - a month, a launch, a person, a problem that got solved. If the team is small enough, one line per person. If it is not, one paragraph about the year that could only have been written about this company. Put it in the box with the reed diffuser or the car perfume, handwritten if you can manage it, printed if you cannot.
Tip: Write it in the week you decide the budget, not in the week you distribute.
2
One band
Same price for everybody, whatever their level
The simplest founder move here is to spend the same on every person in the company. Not because a director and a two-month joiner contribute the same, but because a Diwali gift is a poor instrument for saying anything about that, and everybody compares. If you want to recognise somebody specifically, do it separately, in a different week, with a different conversation. A reed duo at ₹1,498 or Safar at ₹3,999 is fine for that - just not on the same table.
3
Restraint
Do not overspend to make a point
An expensive gift from a founder to an employee is not the same transaction as an expensive gift between peers, and it can land as something the recipient did not ask to be part of. Somewhere between ₹400 and ₹1,000 a head is comfortable and reads as considered. The car fragrance range from ₹449 and the reed diffusers from ₹749 both sit in that band without trying.
Tip: Generous is a price band, not a maximum.
The SOSA principle
The object is nearly interchangeable. The sentence is not.
Any founder can buy a reed diffuser. Only this one can write down what actually happened in this company this year, and that part takes an evening and no budget at all.
Choosing the object that carries it
Pick whichever of these is easiest to order in your quantity, and put the effort into the note.
The SOSA gifting edit
Sensible objects for a founder to hand the whole team
An attar roll-on at ₹379, alcohol-free and gift-ready. A complete object at the price rather than part of one.
If the company is still small and new, Startup team gifting makes the case for spending the whole per-head budget on a single object. If somebody else will actually run the ordering, hand them HR: where to start, which sets out the order of decisions. The reed diffuser range and the car fragrance collection are where most founder gifts land.
Gifting for a whole team?
Send us headcount, per-head budget and cities. If stock cannot fill the order, we will say so before you plan around it.
Buy the simple thing. Write the difficult sentence. That is the whole job.

The SOSA corporate gift edit
Every SOSA gift is alcohol-free, long-lasting and ready to hand over, handmade in small batches in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit by budget tier and by who the gift is for.
The SOSA corporate Diwali gift edit
Five tiers that cover a whole company - from a ₹379 attar to a ₹3,999 executive gift
Waterless car diffuser - the executive gift that is actually in stock
₹3,999
Two honest notes. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil; the Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations - SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal
Most corporate Diwali gifts fail for the same reason: they are chosen to be defensible rather than useful. A box of sweets nobody eats, dry fruits that go into a cupboard. The gift is not really for the employee - it is for the person signing it off.
The test I would apply is simple. Will this still be in use in February? A car fragrance in the car of someone who drives to work every day passes that test. So does a reed diffuser in a home office. A body-worn perfume chosen for someone you do not know well does not, because fragrance worn on skin is personal - choosing it for a colleague is a comment on how they smell, and most people quietly do not wear it.
Two honest things I would rather say than sell past. If your budget is genuinely under Rs 350 a head, fragrance is the wrong category - buy something else and come back next year. And if you need three hundred of something we hold ninety of, we will tell you, because a Diwali gift that arrives in December is worse than no gift at all. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
Frequently asked questions
What should a founder gift their team for Diwali?
One useful object in a single price band for everybody, with a short note written by the founder. A 50ML reed diffuser at ₹749, a hanging car perfume at ₹449, or an attar roll-on at ₹379 all work. The choice between them matters less than the note that goes with it.
Should a founder write a personal note with the Diwali gift?
Yes, and it should be specific to this year and this company rather than general. Two or three sentences naming something that actually happened is worth more than a printed card. Write it in the week you set the budget, because it will not get written once the ordering starts.
Should a founder give senior staff a better gift?
Keep the Diwali gift in one band for everybody. It is a poor instrument for saying anything about seniority, and people compare gifts. If you want to recognise somebody in particular, do it separately and in a different week.
How much should a founder spend per employee?
₹400 to ₹1,000 a head is comfortable and reads as considered. Spending much more from a founder to an employee changes the nature of the transaction and can land as an obligation the recipient did not ask for.
Is fragrance a good gift from a founder to the team?
Home and car fragrance works well, because the recipient decides where and whether to use it. Body-worn fragrance is a more personal choice and is better kept out of a whole-team gift. It is also worth quietly offering an alternative to anyone who would rather not have a fragrance item, for reasons entirely their own.
One good object for everybody, from ₹379 to ₹1,498, alcohol-free and handmade in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
