Why does newness matter so much? Because adhesives, sealers, lacquer, engineered board and new carpet off-gas for weeks in a sealed air-conditioned store, and fragrance combines with that rather than masking it.
Does backlit stone or LED lighting affect anything? Yes. Both are heat sources close to the cases, and warm air rises, so fragrance climbs off the displays and collects above head height.
A contemporary store is almost always a new store
Contemporary is a fit-out age as much as a style, and noticing that produces better advice than any discussion of registers, because it decides what these stores actually smell of during the period when the question is being asked. A contemporary fine-jewellery store is, almost by definition, a recent build. The format is new, the brands in it are usually young or newly repositioned, and the interiors are typically two or three years old at most. That means the dominant olfactory fact about the room in its first year is not the design - it is the construction. New fit-outs off-gas. Adhesives, sealers, lacquers, engineered board and veneer, foam, new carpet and newly upholstered seating all release volatile compounds for weeks and often for months, and a contemporary jewellery store is a particularly bad case for two reasons: it is sealed and air-conditioned with limited fresh air exchange, which slows the process considerably, and it is unusually adhesive-heavy, because a minimal contemporary interior is full of bonded panels, seamless joints and applied finishes rather than solid materials. That off-gassing is what customers are reacting to when a beautiful new store smells faintly wrong, and it is what staff mean when they say a new showroom smells like a new showroom. Fragrance layered over it does not mask it. The two combine, the combination is consistently worse than either component alone, and the conclusion drawn is that the fragrance was the problem - after which the layer is usually abandoned for the life of the store. So the sequence matters more than the register in a new contemporary store: complete, builder's clean, then open the space up and run air through it for as long as the programme allows, and only then introduce fragrance as the last item in. There is a free readiness test: air the store hard for several hours, leave the building for a few hours so that your own nose resets, then come back and read the room as a customer would. If it still reads chemical or sharp, ventilate longer. That test beats any schedule, because off-gassing rates vary enormously with materials, ventilation and weather. If a store must open before it is ready, say plainly that this is a curing period rather than a defect and hold the fragrance back. The second thing specific to this format is heat, and almost nobody plans for it. Contemporary jewellery retail is built on illumination: backlit onyx or resin panels, internally lit cases, concentrated LED spotlighting on every display, sometimes illuminated shelving and light boxes. Even efficient LED produces heat, and these fittings sit inches from the product and run ten or twelve hours a day, warming the air immediately around them. Warm air is less dense and rises, carrying fragrance with it, so in a heavily illuminated store the fragrance tends to climb off the cases and collect above head height, in air nobody occupies. The correction is placement rather than output: put the source at console height, in the path of general air movement, away from concentrated lighting, and never on a display case. Raising the level to compensate for a poor position produces a store that is correct nowhere. Third, the room is hard. Glass, mirror, steel, lacquer, engineered stone and large-format tile absorb nothing at all, so nothing is taken up while a system runs and nothing is released back - fragrance travels further, reads sharper, clears faster, and the level swings hard between running and not running. Low and continuous is a requirement rather than a preference in this format, and it is why timer and app control genuinely earns its cost. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is waterless with no tank, coverage up to 1,000 square metres or roughly 10,700 square feet, with Bluetooth app and timer control, which lets a low continuous setting be held rather than varying with whoever opens up. The Sukoon at Rs 1,799 covers a compact boutique or a consultation room, the Boond at Rs 799 a small room, and the Megh at Rs 3,499 a larger floor with its 6L tank. Only then the register, and it should follow the light. A contemporary fine-jewellery store is lit cool, because the lighting has usually been engineered specifically to render diamonds and pale metals accurately, and a register carries an implied warmth - so a warm register argues with a considered and expensive decision, and the customer registers a mismatch they cannot name. White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, is the quietest register we make and suits a genuinely minimal room where the brief is that it should read clean rather than scented. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, has more structure and suits a larger store. Lobby Bar, with citrus, pepper and amber, has genuine edge and suits a brand aimed at a younger affluent customer, with the pepper reading well against steel, glass and pale stone - though it is more nameable than most stores need. Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, works where the contemporary palette includes real timber. What fails is warm, sweet or floral: warm argues with the lighting, sweet reads as mass-market air care and undoes an expensive fit-out in three seconds, and floral reads as traditional in a store that is usually selling a distinction from a traditional showroom. That matters more in jewellery than in most retail because the merchandise contributes no smell of its own - gold, diamonds, platinum, glass and stone are olfactorily inert - so the room carries the entire impression and a poor register has nothing to hide behind. The seven Hotel Collection registers are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, and they are SOSA's own interpretations, since we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. On level, two caps apply and both are jewellery-specific. A transaction is a close-range interaction, with a customer and a salesperson perhaps sixty centimetres apart across a counter and sometimes for a long appointment, which is much closer than most retail - so specify for the counter rather than the doorway. And staff stand on that floor for nine or ten hours a day, did not choose the register, and adapted within the first hour, so they cannot judge it and should not be asked to: set it with them, lower it without argument if they raise it, and give a manager a physical control rather than an app held at head office. On zoning, the plan decides rather than the floor area. A machine distributes through connected moving air and cannot cross a closed door, so the open floor is one zone with one machine while every consultation room, office and washroom behind a door is its own, on the same register at a lower level because those appointments are longer and closer. Reeds behind doors are Rs 749 to Rs 849, three to four months a bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml, standing on a tray without exception because reed oil marks stone, lacquer and metal and porous stone absorbs it permanently. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection only at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage them. And the other sources hold as everywhere: the pantry is never scented at any time, because cooking smell is aerosolised oil that travels much further than expected and settles into carpet and seating - extraction is the answer; a washroom with weak extract or a dry trap needs fixing; and air conditioning in a store running twelve hours a day belongs on a service schedule. We make no claim that fragrance affects mood, dwell time, purchase behaviour, spend or wellbeing. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against the specification on WhatsApp.
Construction, before design

The free readiness test - air it hard, leave for a few hours so your nose resets, come back and read it as a customer would - beats any schedule, because rates vary with materials, ventilation and weather. Second, heat: contemporary retail is built on illumination - backlit onyx or resin, internally lit cases, concentrated LED - and even efficient LED produces heat inches from the product for twelve hours a day, so warm air rises off the cases carrying fragrance above head height. Correct by placement, not output: console height, in general air movement, away from concentrated lighting, never on a case. Third, the room is hard - glass, mirror, steel, lacquer, engineered stone - so nothing is absorbed or released, fragrance travels further, reads sharper and swings, which makes low and continuous a requirement and is where timer and app control earns its cost: the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, waterless with coverage to 1,000 m², with the SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,799, SOSA Boond at Rs 799 and SOSA Megh at Rs 3,499. Then the register, following the light, which is engineered cool to render stones: White Tea Serenity for a minimal room, Quiet Luxury for a larger one, Lobby Bar where a brand wants edge, Forest Suite where real timber is present. Warm argues with the lighting, sweet reads as mass-market air care, floral reads as traditional - and it costs more here because the merchandise is inert and the room carries everything. Cap the level at the counter, a sixty-centimetre interaction, and with the staff, who adapted in the first hour. Zoning follows the plan, with consultation rooms on the same register at a lower level and reeds from Rs 749 on a tray. Never the pantry. From Rs 299 for 15ml. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards. Volume pricing is quoted on WhatsApp.

Versailles
Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
