If they are hard to buy for, or the room is shared: Mountain Breeze ₹849 — dry pine, sage and cedar, the least sweet and least gendered register we make.
If you know one thing: they like flowers → Garden Bloom ₹799. They are serious about coffee → Fresh Brew ₹849. They work from home at a desk → Morning Freshness ₹749.
The honest gap: there is no reed diffuser under ₹749 and no machine under ₹899, no gift card, no hamper and no curated reed gift set — the duos at ₹1,498–₹1,598 are two bottles. There is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a machine refill.
2. How big is that room? Up to about 150 sq ft — a bedroom, a home office, a bathroom — take the 50ml at ₹749–₹849, which lasts 6–8 weeks. Above that, or if the door opens straight onto it, take the 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349, which lasts 14–18 weeks. This is the only question in the tree with a wrong answer that money cannot fix: a 50ml in a large living room simply reads as faint.
3. What do they do in that room? Sleep in it → Evening Calm ₹799. Work in it → Morning Freshness ₹749 or Mountain Breeze ₹849. Arrive into it, or have people over → Garden Bloom ₹799 in 130ml. Read and sit in it in winter → Fresh Brew ₹849.
4. Do you know one single thing about what they like? Flowers, coffee, lavender, the outdoors, hotels. One fact is enough to override step three. No fact at all is also fine, and produces Evening Calm.
5. Have they ever called a fragrance "too much"? If yes, take the lower half of the strength scale — Evening Calm at 8.9 or Garden Bloom at 8.9 — and tell them to use three reeds rather than six. If they have ever complained that something faded, take Mountain Breeze at 9.4 or Fresh Brew at 9.5 and use all six.
Every reed is alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle. Composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The three questions that do most of the work
Of the five steps above, three carry almost all the weight, and they are the three that ask about the room rather than the recipient. This is deliberate: the information you actually possess about a partner in the first year is spatial, not olfactory. You know where they sleep and roughly how big it is. You do not know whether they prefer a herbal lavender to a British rose, and neither, in most cases, do they.
Smoked Oudh₹449A reed diffuser scents a room continuously for six to eight weeks, which is wonderful in a room that belongs to the recipient and awkward in one that does not. Putting a scent into a shared living room is a decision on behalf of everybody who lives there, and it tends to be resolved by somebody quietly moving the bottle. If your partner shares a flat or lives with family, buy for their own room or buy a candle: the Smoked Oudh and Sandalwood singles at ₹449 are message-free and single-scent, and the ₹379 jar candles — Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings, Evening Walks — do the same job for less.
Garden Bloom₹799This is the question people skip and the one that most often decides whether the gift is described as lovely or as faint. The 50ml at ₹749–₹849 is built for a room up to roughly 150 sq ft: a bedroom, a home office, a bathroom, a study. It runs 6–8 weeks. The 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 is for a living room, a kitchen or an open-plan end of a flat, and it runs 14–18 weeks — Ritu K. in Delhi put one in an entryway and three separate guests asked which hotel it reminded them of. A 130ml in a small bedroom is not a mistake, merely generous; a 50ml in a large open room is a genuine disappointment, and no scent choice rescues it.
Mountain Breeze₹849A room has a job and the scent should agree with it. Sleeping → Evening Calm ₹799, the softest at 8.9; Rhea M. in Pune calls it part of her bedtime routine. Working → Mountain Breeze ₹849 for concentration, or Morning Freshness ₹749 for a desk somebody sits down at in the morning. Arriving and hosting → Garden Bloom ₹799, in 130ml if the room is large. Reading, sitting, winter → Fresh Brew ₹849. And one placement rule that applies to all four: put it where air already moves, and never directly under a running split AC.
Why the tree asks about the home and not about them
Gift guides for partners almost all begin with personality, and personality is the least reliable input available. A person's stated taste in fragrance is usually a memory of one perfume they wore at twenty-two, and it maps very badly onto what they want a room to smell like at nine in the evening. Home fragrance is not worn; it is inhabited, by them and by anybody else who is there, for weeks at a stretch. The question "what would she like" is genuinely hard. The question "how big is her bedroom and does she sleep well" is easy, and it produces a better bottle.
There is a calibration argument here too, and it is the one this whole family of pages turns on. In an early relationship the safest gift is the one that does not require the recipient to have a position on it. A perfume for the body is a comment on how they smell. A cushion is a comment on their sofa. A reed diffuser in the corner of a room they control is a small, reversible, entirely optional improvement to the air, and if it is not to their taste it is over in eight weeks with nobody obliged to say anything. That reversibility is not a weakness of a consumable gift. It is the reason a consumable is the correct shape of gift when you have known somebody for four months.
The two blind-buy verdicts are worth stating plainly, since they do most of the practical work. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the safest thing in the range: 8.9 on the strength scale, low polarisation, room-agnostic and carrying no cultural or memory loading. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the best answer for somebody genuinely hard to buy for and for any room two people share, because a dry wood is the least sweet and least polarising register there is — Shaan D. in Chennai reports that his partner, who dislikes anything he would call masculine, asked him to refill it. At the other end, Fresh Brew at ₹849 is the least safe blind buy: at 9.5 it is the deepest thing we make and a gourmand besides, superb for somebody who takes coffee seriously and wrong for anybody you are guessing about. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is the most-gifted floral in the range and still not a blind buy, because anti-floral is a common and firmly held position.
The whole tree in one table — the same for either partner
Read down the first column until a row describes the situation you are actually in, then buy what it says. The last row is what to do when the tree does not apply, which is more often than a shop would like to admit.
| If this is your situation | Buy | Why | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| You know nothing about their taste ★ | Evening Calm | 8.9, softest in range; low polarisation, no cultural loading | 50ml | ₹799 |
| They are famously hard to buy for | Mountain Breeze | Dry pine and cedar — the least sweet, least polarising register | 50ml | ₹849 |
| The room is shared by the two of you | Mountain Breeze | The one most often described as working for both people in a bedroom | 50ml | ₹849 |
| They work from home at a desk | Morning Freshness | Lemon, mint, eucalyptus — bright and dry, and the cheapest reed | 50ml | ₹749 |
| They sleep badly, or dislike strong scent | Evening Calm, three reeds | The gentlest composition, at the lowest reed count | 50ml | ₹799 |
| You know they like flowers | Garden Bloom | British rose and night-blooming jasmine; not a blind buy | 50ml or 130ml | ₹799 / ₹1,299 |
| They are serious about coffee | Fresh Brew | Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla at 9.5 — the deepest we make | 50ml | ₹849 |
| The door opens onto the room, or they host | Garden Bloom 130ml | Above 150 sq ft needs the larger bottle; 14–18 weeks | 130ml | ₹1,299 |
| You want them to have a choice, not a verdict | Day & Night duo | Two 50ml bottles — bright and soft. They keep the one they prefer | 50ml × 2 | ₹1,498 |
| They share a flat, or live with family | Smoked Oudh candle | Not a reed. Ten square centimetres, message-free, nobody's permission needed | 80g | ₹449 |
| Mid-renovation, newborn at home, or a stated scent aversion | Nothing from this page | Home fragrance is the wrong category, and saying so is the point of the tree | — | — |

When the answer is not a reed at all — three situations, said plainly
A decision tree that always arrives at the thing the writer sells is not a decision tree. There are three situations in which I would not give home fragrance to a partner, and they are worth more than any recommendation above, because getting one of them wrong is how a thoughtful gift becomes a problem. A home mid-renovation already contains more smells than anybody wants and nowhere stable to put a bottle. A household with a newborn that has not asked for anything scented should not receive an unrequested addition to the air; if they have asked, Evening Calm at 8.9 is the gentlest thing we make and Tara P. in Chennai gave exactly that to a friend with a new baby. And a stated scent aversion — migraine, asthma, an explicit dislike — is not a preference to be worked around. It is a no.
Then the honest gaps in the range itself, twice-stated on every page in this universe for good reason. There is no reed diffuser under ₹749 and no machine under ₹899, so any budget below ₹500 is a candle, a wax melt, a car perfume or a 3ml attar rather than a reed. There is no gift card, no hamper and no curated reed gift set — the duos at ₹1,498–₹1,598 are simply two bottles in a box. There is no room spray of any kind at SOSA; every SOSA spray is a car perfume. There is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed diffuser, though the Smoked Oudh and Sandalwood candles at ₹449 are real and are the cheapest route into that register. And there is no hotel-inspired reed: those seven scents are water-based and go only in an ultrasonic machine such as the Boond at ₹899. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill for that machine and is not a gift on its own.
And to be fair to the alternatives this page displaces, since a partner's birthday has more than one right answer. Flowers are the better gift when the moment is the point rather than the fortnight — they are at their best on the day, they need no shelf, and nothing else says today as clearly. Something edible and shared is the better gift when you will be there to eat it, because a gift consumed together is an evening rather than an object. And an experience — a meal, a drive, a ticket — beats everything in this catalogue when what the relationship needs is time rather than a thing. Where all three lose is duration and quietness: they happen once. A reed diffuser is the version of the same intention that keeps working in the background for two months, which is a different and equally real kind of gift.
The gifting edit for either partner, in order — and what is missing
The same edit works for a girlfriend or a boyfriend, because nothing in it is gendered. Buy in this order unless the tree above has already told you otherwise, and read the last row before you buy anything.
| Buy | What it is | When it is the right answer | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Evening Calm 50ml ★ | Kashmir lavender and real chamomile — 8.9, the softest we make | The default when you cannot answer the taste question | ₹799 |
| 2. Mountain Breeze 50ml | Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar — dry, green, no sweetness | Hard to buy for, a shared bedroom, or a study | ₹849 |
| 3. Morning Freshness 50ml | Malabar lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus base — bright at 9.0 | A working desk, a bathroom, or a tight budget at ₹749 | ₹749 |
| 4. Garden Bloom 130ml | British rose and night-blooming jasmine, in the substantial size | An entryway or a living room, when you know they like florals | ₹1,299 |
| 5. Day & Night duo | Two 50ml bottles — Morning Freshness and Evening Calm | When you would rather hedge than decide for them | ₹1,498 |
| No reed under ₹749, no gift set, no oud reed: the honest gap | There is no reed diffuser under ₹749 and no machine under ₹899. No gift card, no hamper and no curated reed gift set — the duos are two bottles. No room spray; every SOSA spray is a car perfume. No oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed, and no hotel-inspired reed. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a machine refill, not a gift | Said plainly, twice, rather than discovered at checkout | from ₹749 / ₹899 |
Versailles
I built this tree because of how the questions actually arrive. Almost nobody writes to ask which scent a particular person would enjoy — they write to say I have ₹800 and I have met his flat twice and I do not want to get this wrong. That is not a fragrance question. It is a question about risk, and risk is reduced by asking things you can answer rather than things you cannot.
So the four questions are all spatial, and the default at the end is deliberate. Evening Calm exists in the range partly because a range needs something that is safe to give. At 8.9 it is the quietest composition I have made; it does not announce itself, it does not carry a memory the way rose and jasmine do in Indian homes, and it works equally in a bedroom, a bathroom and a guest room. If you take nothing else from this page, take that bottle and stop worrying.
The part I care most about is the row at the bottom of the table — the one that says buy nothing. A home mid-renovation, a newborn, a stated aversion: those are three occasions where the correct answer is a different category entirely, and a page that cannot say so has not earned the recommendations above it. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
