✓ A long supervision, a mentor who kept answering emails years after you left, a relationship that outlived the degree — those are where premium is earned.✓ One module, one semester, and an open mark on their desk is where premium is not earned, however good the teaching was.✓ A group gift is almost always the cleaner form for anything larger. It spreads the gesture, and no single student's name sits on top of it.

Premium is a real category here, but it belongs to a narrow set of relationships. Most people arrive at this page because the gratitude is large. The question that decides it is different: has the relationship been long, and is it over?
Quick answers — read this first
When is a premium gift appropriate for a professor? When the relationship has been long and is no longer an assessing one. A supervisor who guided a dissertation over two years, a mentor who kept advising you after you graduated, an academic who wrote references for a decade — those relationships carry a larger gift comfortably. A professor who taught you one module last semester does not, however good the module was. The second test is timing: if marks, references or admissions decisions are still open, any premium gift is the wrong gift. And even where it is warranted, a group gift is usually the cleaner form.
What counts as premium without being too much? In practice, a reed duo at ₹1,498 for two 50ml bottles, the 6ml attar trio at ₹1,859, or a 130ml duo at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598 from a group. Those are substantial objects that still read as thank-you rather than as something that needs explaining. An ultrasonic diffuser at ₹1,899 is another sensible shape for a home study, though it needs power and water and is a more demanding object than a reed. Beyond that band you are into territory where most institutional gift policies would have something to say.
Should a premium gift come from a group? Usually, yes, and this is the most useful thing on the page. A larger gift from one student sits awkwardly in a relationship with a power line through it, and it puts that student's name on top of the gesture in a way most people do not intend. The same object from six former supervisees, with every name on the card, is straightforward to accept and says more. Collect modest amounts, buy one good thing, and let anybody who would rather not contribute simply not. Nobody should be counting who gave what.
The short answer
Short answer: Premium is earned by the length and the closeness of the relationship, not by the size of the gratitude. A two-year supervision or a mentorship that continued past graduation carries a larger gift; one module last semester does not. Where larger is warranted, give it as a group — a reed duo at ₹1,498, the 6ml attar trio at ₹1,859, or a 130ml duo at ₹2,498.
When does a professor deserve a premium gift, and when is it the wrong idea?
Two questions settle it, and neither of them is about money. First: how long has this relationship run, and how close is it really? A supervisor who worked through a dissertation with you over two years, an academic mentor who kept replying to your emails after you graduated, somebody who has written references for you repeatedly over a decade — these are relationships with real duration and real mutual knowledge, and they carry a larger gift without strain. A professor who taught one module last semester does not, however good that module was. The gift should match the relationship rather than the gratitude, and gratitude is the thing most likely to mislead you here. Second: is anything still open? If a mark is unpublished, a reference is being drafted, or a place on a programme is being decided, then premium is simply the wrong idea at any size, because a large gift arriving inside an open decision has to be handled rather than enjoyed. Wait until it closes. After graduation, or after a supervision has formally ended, the constraint lifts considerably and a larger object becomes reasonable. If both tests pass, the next question is form, and the answer is usually a group. A larger gift from one student puts that student's name on top of the gesture and asks the recipient to hold a fairly one-sided act of generosity. The same object from six former supervisees is easy to accept and says more. Collect modest amounts, buy one good thing, put every name on the card, and let anybody who would rather not contribute simply not — nobody should be counting. As for what to buy: a reed duo at ₹1,498 for two 50ml bottles is the natural first step up, the 6ml attar trio at ₹1,859 works where you want something worn and the relationship is well past its assessing phase, and a 130ml duo at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598 suits a group giving to somebody who supervised a long piece of work. An ultrasonic diffuser at ₹1,899 is a good home-study object but needs power and water, so it asks more of the recipient than a reed does. Check your institution's rules first — this is the band where value caps actually bite. For help sizing it, ask us to help choose a gift.
Premium is for a long relationship that has ended, not a strong feeling about a short one. And where larger is right, give it as a group with every name on the card.
The natural step up is the SOSA Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 for 2 x 50ml — one bright bottle and one quiet one, which covers a cabin and a home between them.
Sizing honestly, because this is the band where it matters. A 50ml duo at ₹1,498 is a proper gift and still easy to accept. The 130ml duo at ₹2,498 is a home-sized object and should come from a group rather than one person. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 is a fine machine but it needs power, water and cleaning, so only give it where you know the room and the person will use it.
Morning Freshness and Evening Calm in one box — one bright, one quiet. The lavender register belongs at home rather than in a faculty office, which is part of the point of a duo. 2 x 50ml ₹1,498, 2 x 130ml ₹2,498.
Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze — lemon and mint alongside pine, sage and cedar. Both registers are dry and unsweet, so both suit a cabin or a shared office. 2 x 50ml ₹1,548, 2 x 130ml ₹2,548.
Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box. Three 6ml bottles at ₹1,859, or three 12ml at ₹3,189. Appropriate once the supervision has ended and everyone giving has graduated.
Morning Freshness and Evening Calm together - one bright, one quiet - as 2 x 50ml (₹1,498) or 2 x 130ml (₹2,498). Two rooms, or one room and a change of register in the evening.
Three conditions. A larger gift needs all three, not two out of three.
1
Condition one: duration
Premium is earned over years, not over one good semester
The single most reliable guide to how large a gift should be is how long the relationship has run and how much the two of you actually know about each other. A two-year dissertation supervision involves hundreds of hours, difficult conversations and a genuine working relationship; a mentor who has been answering your emails since 2019 is somebody you know. Those relationships carry a larger object comfortably. One module, one semester and a set of lectures you admired do not, and a premium gift there is warmer than the relationship, which is the commonest mistake in this whole category. It does not make the teaching less good. It just means the appropriate thank-you is a ₹749 reed and a very good letter.
Tip: If you would hesitate to phone them about something unrelated to work, the relationship is probably not in premium territory yet.
2
Condition two: nothing open
A large gift inside an open decision is always wrong
This condition is absolute in a way the others are not. If a mark is unpublished, a reference is being written, a viva has not happened or a place on a programme is being decided, then no premium gift is appropriate at any price, because it arrives in the middle of something and has to be handled rather than simply received. Some institutions would require it to be declared or returned. Wait. After graduation, after a supervision formally ends, after the last reference has been sent, the constraint lifts substantially and the same object becomes an ordinary act of thanks between adults. This is the reason the premium pages in this family are mostly written for graduates rather than for current students.
Two dry registers in one box — both of them suited to a working room.
A group gift is usually the cleaner way to give something larger
Even where a larger gift is fully warranted, the form matters. From one person it is a fairly one-sided act of generosity and it puts that person's name on top of the gesture, which most givers do not intend. From a group of former supervisees or a cohort of graduates it is simply a collective thank-you, easy to accept and easier to acknowledge. Practically: collect modest amounts, buy one good thing rather than several, write one card with every name on it, and make contributing genuinely optional without anybody tracking who gave what. A ₹1,498 duo split between six people is a small amount each and a substantial object at the other end.
The SOSA principle
The commonest failure in premium gifting is not overspending. It is a gift that is warmer than the relationship, which leaves the recipient working out what to say and how to reciprocate.
That is an observation about proportion in gifting, and no claim about what any particular gift does to a working relationship.
The step up that still reads as a thank-you: The Day and Night duo at ₹1,498 for 2 x 50ml, or ₹2,498 for 2 x 130ml when a group is giving.
The premium tier, matched to the kind of relationship that actually warrants it.
The SOSA plan
Premium, matched to the relationship
The relationship
What is proportionate
One module, last semester, marks not yet out
Nothing premium. A 50ml reed at ₹749 and a good letter, once the results are published.
A two-year supervision, now finished
A reed duo at ₹1,498, or the 6ml attar trio at ₹1,859 if you know their taste runs to worn fragrance.
A mentor who kept advising you after graduation
A 130ml duo at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598, or a 12ml attar at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 as an individual gift.
A group of former supervisees giving together
One good thing rather than several. The 12ml trio at ₹3,189 is the top of what I would suggest here.
If you have just graduated and are not sure how much the constraint has relaxed, a gift for a professor after graduation sets it out, and the institutional side is covered in what is an appropriate gift for a college professor. SOSA is an independent Indian brand, not affiliated with any perfume house, designer, college or university, and no institution is a SOSA customer.
For a supervisor, once everybody has graduated: The Attar Trio in 6ml at ₹1,859 — Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani. Worn fragrance, with the choosing left to them.
Premium is a statement about how long you have known somebody. When it is used to say how grateful you feel, it usually lands as something the recipient has to manage.

The form matters as much as the object
One good thing from several people, with every name on the card
One substantial object, given by a group where possible, to a relationship long enough to carry it and finished enough to make it simple. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Three limits, and the first one bites hardest in this band. Institutional gift policies frequently set value caps and declaration thresholds for academic staff, and a premium gift is exactly what those rules are written for — check before you buy. The Megh at ₹3,499 runs for a long time but covers less area than the Sukoon, so it is a runtime machine rather than a bigger one; do not read the price as more coverage. And we make no promise about delivery timing, wrapping, personalisation or stock.

A note from Sonal
Premium is the band I am most cautious about in this whole cluster, because the people who ask about it are almost always asking for the right reasons. They were supervised well, or mentored generously, and they want the gift to register that. What I try to do is separate two things that feel identical from the inside: how much somebody did for you, and how well the two of you actually know each other. Only the second one sets the size of the gift.
The other thing I push is form. If the relationship genuinely warrants something larger, a group is nearly always the better vehicle. Six people giving one good thing is easy for a supervisor to accept and hard to misread, where the same object from one former student can sit oddly. Collect small amounts, buy one thing, sign one card, and do not let anybody keep a ledger of who put in what.
The usual disclosure, which matters more in this band. Choosing a fragrance or a diffuser is an ambience decision and not a claim about health: nothing therapeutic, nothing medical, and we make no claim that any machine cleans a room or masks an odour. An ultrasonic diffuser adds a little humidity to a room, which is a fact about how it works and not a benefit we claim. Where a professor keeps it, and whether they use it at all, is entirely their judgement. Alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts about our attars; patch-test. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
When is a premium gift appropriate for a professor?
When the relationship has been long and is no longer an assessing one. A two-year supervision, or a mentor who kept advising you after you graduated, carries a larger gift comfortably. One module last semester does not, however good it was. And if marks, references or admissions decisions are still open, a premium gift is the wrong idea at any price.
What is a sensible premium budget?
A reed duo at Rs 1,498 for two 50ml bottles, the 6ml attar trio at Rs 1,859, or a 130ml duo at Rs 2,498 to Rs 2,598 from a group. Those are substantial objects that still read as thank-you. Beyond that band you are in territory most institutional gift policies have something to say about.
Should a premium gift come from a group?
Usually. A larger gift from one student puts that person's name on top of the gesture and is a fairly one-sided act of generosity. From six former supervisees it is simply a collective thank-you, easy to accept and easy to acknowledge. Collect modest amounts, buy one good thing, and put every name on the card.
Is a diffuser machine a good premium gift?
Only where you know the room and know the person will use it. The Sukoon at Rs 1,899 is a 500ml ultrasonic diffuser covering roughly 270 to 320 sq ft and running 16 to 18 hours on low, but it needs power, water and regular cleaning. A reed asks nothing at all, which is often the better property in a gift.
Is the most expensive machine the best one?
No, and it is worth saying plainly. The Megh at Rs 3,499 has a six-litre tank and runs for a long time, but it covers roughly 215 sq ft, which is less than the Sukoon at Rs 1,899. It is a runtime machine rather than a coverage upgrade, so do not read the higher price as a larger room.
Only if you know the room and the person: The Sukoon at ₹1,899 — a 500ml ultrasonic diffuser covering roughly 270 to 320 sq ft. It needs power, water and cleaning, so it asks more than a reed does.
