★ The machine, and where it actually goes in a mall store

Every mall store I am asked about has the same shape of problem, and it is rarely the fragrance that is wrong. It is that the store is sitting at the low-pressure end of a system somebody else designed.
Quick answers — read this first
Where should the machine go? Well inside the store, on the supply air path, away from the return grille, and never at the threshold. The doorway is the one part of a mall unit you cannot hold, because corridor air is moving into it all day and no setting changes that. Placed inside, the machine works with your own conditioned air rather than against the mall's; placed at the door it spends its output on the corridor. If your fit-out allows a wall or HVAC mount, use it - the profile then travels wherever your supply air travels.

Will scenting stop the smells coming in from next door? No, and I will not sell it to you as though it will. Fragrance never covers or neutralises another smell, and a supplier who suggests it does is describing something that does not happen - you would simply have two smells instead of one, which is worse. Ingress from a corridor, a food court or a neighbouring unit is a pressure and airflow problem. It belongs to your HVAC contractor and to mall management, and it is worth raising formally rather than solving with oil.

What does it cost? For a mall unit of roughly 1,400 to 2,000 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, mounted inside the store on the supply path, run low on a timer matched to mall trading hours with the key-lock on. Total hardware ₹11,999, one machine. A single-room unit under 750 sq ft takes a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead, placed by the same rules. Installation, AMC, warranty and corporate invoicing terms are not published, so confirm them with us rather than assuming them into a fit-out budget.
The short answer
Short answer: well inside the store on the supply air path, away from the return grille and never at the threshold. A mall unit sits at the receiving end of the mall's air handling, so the doorway cannot be held at any setting. Fragrance does not cover a corridor smell; ingress is an airflow conversation with mall management. One Vaayu at ₹11,999 for 1,400-2,000 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), wall or HVAC mounted well inside the trading floor on the supply path, running low on mall trading hours with the key-lock engaged.
Next step: send the unit plan with the shopfront, the AC supply and return grilles and the neighbouring tenancies marked, and we will mark the machine position and what to raise with mall management - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

Two of these five rules cost nothing and one of them is a letter to the mall. The machine is the last item, and it works properly only once the first four are understood.

Straight answer
Where should a scent machine be positioned in a mall store with constant corridor airflow?
Well inside the store, on the supply air path, away from the return grille, and never at the threshold - and the reasoning behind those four words is worth having in full, because it also explains why turning the machine up has not worked. A mall unit is not a sealed room. It is a room at the receiving end of a much larger air-handling system that somebody else designed and operates, and the pressure relationship between the corridor and your store is set by that system, not by your fit-out. Where the corridor is at higher pressure, air moves into your store all day, carrying whatever the corridor carries. That is a genuine problem and it has a genuine owner: your HVAC contractor and mall management, who can look at supply and extract balance for your tenancy. Raise it formally, in writing, and be specific about the times of day it is worst. What it is not is a fragrance problem. Fragrance never covers or neutralises another smell, and any supplier who implies otherwise is describing something that does not happen - the two smells simply coexist and the room is worse than if you had done nothing. I would rather lose a sale than agree to that framing. So, placement. First, get away from the door. A shopfront that is open, or a door that opens constantly, exchanges the air near it many times an hour; nothing you buy holds a fragrance there, and the standard error is to increase the setting until the entrance smells right, at which point the showroom is overpowering and the entrance still is not. Let the customer meet the room three or four paces in. Second, find your supply and return grilles - ask the contractor to mark them on the plan - and place the machine where conditioned air is moving away from it into the store, never where it is being drawn back into the system, or the plant gets your profile before the floor does. Third, if the fit-out allows a wall or HVAC mount, take it, because that puts the profile wherever your own supply air arrives, which is the only distribution network you actually control. Fourth, if a small lobby or an air curtain is possible within the mall's shopfront rules, that helps the whole store rather than only its smell, and it is a conversation to have with the mall's projects team early. Then level, which in a mall store is usually set too high because owners are compensating for the corridor. Hard mall finishes make anything read louder, so a mall unit generally wants a lower setting than a high-street store of the same size, not a higher one. Set it for the advisor who breathes it nine hours a day, not the customer who is in it for forty minutes, and if the team says it is too much, it is too much. Confirm it by walking in from the corridor after a break - notice a room somebody looks after, not a fragrance. Hardware: one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a unit of about 1,400 to 2,000 sq ft, key-locked and timed to mall trading hours; under 750 sq ft, a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899. Total hardware ₹11,999, one machine. Installation, AMC, warranty and corporate invoicing terms are not published and should be confirmed with us rather than assumed, and cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the unit plan with the grilles marked.

The machine for a mall unit

Mall units are usually one open trading volume with a hard shopfront, so the hardware question is simple and the placement question is not. The images link to the product pages for the specifications.

CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

The three placement rules

Three rules, in order, and the third one is a letter rather than a purchase.

1
Move away from the shopfront
The threshold is corridor air, and it will stay corridor air
An open shopfront or a constantly used door exchanges the air near it many times an hour. No machine and no setting holds a fragrance in that band, and trying to is the most expensive mistake in mall retail scenting: the setting climbs, the showroom becomes heavy, the doorway is unchanged, and the oil runs out faster. Accept the threshold for what it is and let the customer meet your room three or four paces in. The first impression you can actually control is made just inside, not at the line, and it should be a room that feels looked after rather than a fragrance that announces itself. Walk the unit at the mall's busiest hour rather than at ten in the morning, because the band of corridor air reaches further into the store when the doors either side are working hard.
Tip: Stand four paces inside with your back to the corridor - that is the position worth optimising.

2
Work with your supply air, not against the mall's
The grille positions decide more than the dial does
Ask your HVAC contractor to mark supply and return on the unit plan. Place the machine where your conditioned air moves away from it into the store; never under or beside a return, where the system removes the profile before the floor receives it. If a wall or HVAC mount is possible, take it - your own supply ductwork is the only distribution network in a mall that belongs to you. A machine in the wrong relationship to the return will underperform at every setting, and the instinctive response of turning it up burns oil and still leaves thin patches on the floor. Ten minutes with the drawings is worth more than any adjustment afterwards. If the fit-out has already been signed off, ask whether a wall mount can still be added on a services variation, because that is usually cheaper than living with a poor position for the life of the lease.
Tip: Get the grilles marked before the joinery is fixed, not after the store has opened.

3
Send the ingress problem to its real owner
Corridor and food-court smells are a pressure question, not a fragrance one
If neighbouring smells enter your store through the day, the relationship between corridor pressure and your tenancy's supply and extract is the cause. That is your HVAC contractor's work and mall management's decision, and it is worth raising in writing with the times of day it is worst. Fragrance is never used to cover or neutralise another smell, in this cluster or anywhere else I write - you would end with two smells rather than one. An air curtain or a small entry lobby, where the mall's shopfront rules allow, does more for this than any machine, and it improves the store's temperature stability at the same time. Keep a short log of dates and times before you write, because a tenancy complaint with a fortnight of observations behind it is treated very differently from one made on a bad afternoon.

The SOSA principle
A mall store cannot be scented at its threshold because the threshold belongs to the mall - so the whole craft is placing one machine deep inside the only body of air you actually control.
And where neighbouring smells enter, the answer is a letter to mall management and an hour with your HVAC contractor, not a higher setting.
SOSA Vaayu
Mounted on your own supply air: SOSA Vaayu can be wall or HVAC mounted, which is how a mall unit distributes a profile without a machine standing in the aisle. ₹11,999.

If the ingress is specifically from a food court rather than general corridor traffic, the airflow conversation is set out in how to stop food-court smells entering a luxury watch boutique. And if you are fitting out the unit rather than fixing one already trading, the order to do it in is in designing a flagship luxury watch boutique from scratch, which begins with airflow rather than fragrance. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

The SOSA mall-store specification

One machine, correctly placed, covers almost every mall watch unit in the country, and the size band decides which one. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA before a multi-unit commitment. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Place inside the boundary, work with your supply air, and send the ingress problem to its owner. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting, seating or case layout; it is never used to cover, mask or neutralise a corridor, food-court or neighbouring-unit smell, and where ingress is the real complaint the honest answer is an airflow review rather than a purchase. Installation, AMC, warranty, corporate invoicing and delivery timing are not published terms and must be confirmed with SOSA. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

Mall stores are where I say no most often, and it is nearly always to the same request: something strong enough to hold the entrance. I understand why it is asked. You stand at your own shopfront, you smell the corridor, and it feels like a problem a stronger product should solve. It is not, and the version of this that gets sold - a higher setting, a heavier oil - produces a showroom people find oppressive while the doorway carries on smelling exactly as it did. The request usually arrives with a photograph of the shopfront and a sentence about the unit two doors down, and I understand the frustration completely.

The honest reframe is that you are a tenant in somebody else's air. The pressure relationship between your unit and the corridor was decided by the mall's engineers, and it can be looked at, but not by me and not with fragrance. Write to mall management with the times of day it is worst, get your own HVAC contractor to check your supply and extract balance, and ask what the shopfront rules allow by way of an air curtain or a small lobby. Those are the moves that change the store. Mall management will rarely act on a verbal complaint, so put the times of day in writing and ask for your tenancy's supply and extract figures while you are at it.

What I can do is make the part you control coherent. One Vaayu at ₹11,999, mounted well inside on your own supply path, running lower than you would think because mall finishes are hard and read loud, key-locked and timed to mall hours. Under 750 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899. Ask us about installation, AMC, warranty and invoicing - none of it is published. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. And run it lower than you think, because stone, glass and steel make everything read louder than the same setting would on a high street.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a scent machine be positioned in a mall store with constant corridor airflow?
Well inside the store, on the supply air path, away from the return grille and never at the threshold. A mall unit sits at the receiving end of the mall's air handling, so the band of air near the shopfront is corridor air and stays corridor air at any setting. Placed inside, and ideally wall or HVAC mounted, the machine works with the conditioned air you actually control. Ask your HVAC contractor to mark supply and return on the unit plan before the joinery is fixed, because after that you are choosing from whatever positions are left over.
Will ambient scenting stop neighbouring shop smells entering our store?
No, and no supplier should tell you otherwise. Fragrance never covers or neutralises another smell - you end up with two smells rather than one, which is worse than doing nothing. Ingress from a corridor, a food court or a neighbouring unit is a pressure and airflow problem belonging to your HVAC contractor and to mall management. Raise it in writing, with the times of day it is worst. Put the complaint in writing with the times of day it is worst, so that it becomes a tenancy matter with a record attached rather than a phone call somebody forgets.
Should a mall store run a higher setting than a high-street store?
Usually lower, which surprises people. Hard mall finishes - stone, glass, steel - make anything read louder, and most over-scented mall units got that way because the owner was compensating for the corridor. Set the level for the advisor who breathes it all day rather than the customer, treat a team saying it is too much as final, and confirm it by walking in from the corridor after a break. A machine placed beside a return grille will also underperform at every setting, so check the placement before you touch the dial.
What does scenting a mall watch store cost?
One SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a unit of roughly 1,400 to 2,000 sq ft, mounted inside on the supply path and timed to mall trading hours with the key-lock on. Total hardware Rs 11,999, one machine. A single-room unit under 750 sq ft takes a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899 instead. Installation, AMC, warranty and corporate invoicing terms are not published and should be confirmed with SOSA. Bulk pricing and multi-site rollout support are equally unpublished, which matters if this unit is one of several you are fitting out in the same year.
Would an air curtain or entrance lobby help?
More than any machine, where the mall's shopfront rules allow one. Both reduce the rate at which corridor air exchanges with your store, which improves temperature stability as well as the coherence of the interior. It is a conversation with the mall's projects team and your fit-out contractor, and it belongs earlier in the process than any fragrance decision does. It also improves temperature stability at the shopfront, which is a fit-out argument rather than a fragrance one and is easier to make with mall management on those terms.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room.
