What oud actually is
Oud — also called agarwood, oudh, or agar — is one of the oldest and most valuable materials in perfumery. It forms when a particular tropical tree (Aquilaria) is infected by a mould; the tree responds by producing a dark, dense, aromatic resin in its heartwood. That resinous wood is oud. Because the process is rare and slow, genuine oud is famously among the most expensive raw materials on earth — by weight, it has been worth more than gold.
Its scent is unlike any other wood. Where sandalwood is creamy and cedarwood is dry and pencil-sharp, oud is deep, resinous, leathery and complex, with a smoky, almost animalic edge in its rawest forms. That edge is precisely why oud demands care at home. Traditional attars and heavy Middle Eastern ouds are magnificent on skin and in the right setting, but at full strength in a closed living room they can be overwhelming — even challenging — to guests who are not expecting them.
The good news is that oud does not have to arrive at full ferocity. A well-composed oud accord for the home keeps the depth and the opulence while smoothing the roughest animalic corners. Dosed lightly, it does something no lighter note can: it makes a room feel established, expensive and grounded, as though the house has held that scent for years.

The restraint that makes it luxury
There is a reason the most expensive homes and hotels that use oud almost never smell strongly of it. Real luxury with oud is a matter of suggestion. A trace of that deep resinous wood, felt at the edge of perception, tells the nose the room is serious and considered. A blast of it tells the nose you are trying too hard — and, worse, it clings to soft furnishings and to guests' clothes in a way lighter notes do not.
So dose oud as if you are almost withholding it. Air the room first — oud over stale air is heavy and sour — then run a low, short cycle rather than a continuous strong one.
