What is a stronger option than a reed diffuser? A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser. It actively lifts fragrance on a fine mist, so the throw is stronger and, importantly, adjustable - you can dial it up for a big room or down for a quiet evening. SOSA's Sukoon and Megh cover larger spaces well.
Should I stop using reed diffusers? Not at all, and SOSA makes them too. Reeds are lovely for a bathroom, a small hall or a bedside - flame-free, no electricity, quietly continuous. The ultrasonic diffuser is the upgrade when you need a bigger, controllable throw, not a replacement everywhere.
Why reeds throw gently - and when that is not enough
I make reed diffusers and I love them, so let me be fair about their limit. A reed diffuser works by passive wicking: the fragrance liquid climbs the rattan sticks and evaporates into the air on its own, with nothing pushing it. That is exactly what makes reeds so pleasant - a soft, steady, flame-free scent that is simply always there. But it also caps how far the scent can reach.
So if your reeds fill the shelf they sit on but not the room, nothing is wrong with them - you have simply asked a gentle, passive scenter to cover a space bigger than its reach. In a small bathroom or beside a bed, reeds are perfect. In an open living room or a large hall, they were never going to fill it, and no amount of extra sticks changes that by much.
Reeds are quiet by design, and that quietness is the whole charm in a small space. The mismatch is only the room size - the answer is a stronger, adjustable scenter where you need reach.
The upgrade: a cool-mist diffuser you can dial up
A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser is the honest upgrade for throw. It vibrates a plate to lift a fine mist that carries fragrance actively into the room, and - this is the key part - the output is adjustable. Turn it up to fill a large space, down for a quiet evening. That control is exactly what a reed cannot give you.
| Aspect | Reed diffuser | Ultrasonic diffuser |
|---|---|---|
| Throw | Gentle, passive, fixed | Stronger, active, adjustable |
| Best room | Bathroom, bedside, small hall | Bedroom, living room, large hall |
| Power | None - always on | USB or mains, cool mist |
| From | ₹749 | ₹799 (Boond) |
"So reeds are the weaker product." Not weaker - gentler, and made for different rooms. I sell both honestly. A reed in a small bathroom is a lovelier, lower-fuss choice than a diffuser. The diffuser wins only where you need more reach and control. Use each where it belongs.
If you go the diffuser route, match it to the room: a Sukoon for a bedroom, a Megh for a living room. Run the water-based Hotel Collection in it - and only that, since raw oils clog the misting plate. And keep your reeds for the small spaces they scent beautifully. The best homes often use both: reeds where the room is small and still, a diffuser where you need to fill and control the scent.

Versailles
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.
They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.
One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.
