Two very different smells get sold under the same three letters, and the one you are describing is only one of them. That matters, because the materials that produce the smoky reading have names of their own, and once you know those names you can avoid them on a label that never mentions oud at all.
Quick answers — read this first
What are the two readings of oud? Medicinal and resinous, or smoky and leathery. The first is dark, slightly sharp, a bit like a sticky balsam or an old cupboard - the thing people describe as the hospital or the barnyard note. The second is charred and tarry, and it almost never arrives alone: it travels with aged tobacco, leather, birch tar and amber, which are the materials actually producing the smoke. Your dislike names the second one, and the useful consequence is that you now have four other words to look for on a note list.

Which SOSA attars are which, and are any of them for me? Nawaab is the smoky-leathery reading: white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, and it is the heaviest thing we make for skin. It is out. Ameeri sits on the other side with a soft oudh under its rose and sandalwood, and Mastani carries oudh under its jasmine and rose - and both of those are still oud, so they are out too. Three of our four attars carry oud and only Adaa does not.

What do I buy, and what does it cost? SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379. It contains neither reading of oud at any dose, and it contains none of the smoke-adjacent materials either - no tobacco, no leather, no amber, no resin. What it has is bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base. The 3ml is the sample size, because we sell no attar sampler and no discovery set; the 6ml is ₹669 and the 12ml ₹1,149. Adaa does carry jasmine sambac, which is worth knowing first.
The short answer
Short answer: oud reads two ways in this market - medicinal and resinous, or smoky and leathery - and the smoky reading is usually produced with aged tobacco, leather, birch tar and amber alongside the oud itself. Nawaab is SOSA's smoky-leathery bottle and is ruled out; Ameeri's soft oudh and Mastani's oudh are the other reading and are ruled out too. Three of the four attars carry oud and only Adaa does not, so the answer is Adaa, the 3ml at ₹379.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, with no oud, no tobacco, no leather and no resin in it, wearing 6-8 hours. If you want a spray instead, SOSA Samundar (₹599 for 10ml) is an aquatic marine and SOSA Khayaal (₹599 for 10ml) is a sparkling bergamot and neroli, and neither of those is an attar.
Next step: tell me whether the oud you could not wear smelled like a hospital cupboard or like a bonfire, because those are two different materials and the second one has three companions worth avoiding by name - Ask for an attar recommendation.
Woods without the smoke - the answer in five linesAdaa 3ml, ₹379 - neither reading of oud in itOud reads two ways: medicinal, or smoky and leatheryNawaab is the smoky one: tobacco, leather, amber. Out.Ameeri and Mastani carry oudh too, so both are outAdaa has jasmine sambac in it - worth checking
Line three is the one to take away. The smoke in a fragrance is usually not the oud at all but the tobacco, leather and tar sitting beside it, and those have names you can look for.

Straight answer
Which attar suits somebody who likes woods but cannot stand smoky oud?
SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379 - and the reason to read the rest of this is the vocabulary, which will be useful to you at anybody's counter. Oud is sold as one word and it reads as two quite different smells. The first reading is medicinal and resinous: dark, faintly sharp, balsamic, the one people describe as a hospital cupboard or an old wardrobe. The second is smoky and leathery: charred, tarry, dry, closer to a bonfire than to a wood. Almost nobody hates both equally, and you have told me which of the two you cannot wear. Here is why that helps. The smoky reading is rarely the oud on its own. It is produced by what a perfumer puts beside the oud - aged tobacco, leather, birch tar and amber - and those four materials can make a fragrance smell smoky in a bottle with no oud in it at all. So your dislike gives you four extra words to search for on a note list, which is worth more than one. Now our range, plainly. SOSA makes exactly four attars and three of them contain oud. Nawaab is the smoky-leathery reading in our line and it is unambiguous about it: white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. It is the heaviest thing we make for skin and it is the first bottle off your list, on the smoke and on the oud both. Ameeri belongs to the other reading, a soft oudh under Taif rose, real Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron; it is not a smoky composition, but soft describes a dose and not an absence, so the oud is in the bottle and Ameeri is out too. Mastani carries oudh under night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose and Mysore sandalwood, with vanilla and tonka as well, so it goes on the same ground. And the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is exactly those three bottles with Adaa left out. Adaa is the one left: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac, white musk. No oud in either reading, and none of the smoke-adjacent four either - no tobacco, no leather, no amber, nothing resinous in the base. I should be straight about one thing: Adaa is not a woody attar, and we do not make an oud-free woody one, so if it is wood itself you want rather than the dry restraint that usually comes with it, that bottle is a gap in our range. It is alcohol-free, carries no DPG, sits on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base and wears 6-8 hours, the only longevity figure we publish. Buy the 3ml at ₹379, our sample size, since we sell no sampler. Adaa carries jasmine sambac, and SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind. Ask for an attar recommendation and tell me which of the two ouds it was.
Oud reads either medicinal-resinous or smoky-leathery, and the smoke usually comes from the tobacco, leather and tar beside it rather than from the oud. Nawaab is our smoky one and is out; Ameeri's soft oudh and Mastani's oudh are out too. Adaa has neither reading: ₹379 for the 3ml.
The bottle is one SOSA Adaa - bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk underneath. No oud in either reading, and no tobacco, leather or amber either. No DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is our sample size.

Oud's two faces, and what to do with the distinction

Three steps, and the middle one is the part that will still be useful to you a year from now in a shop that has never heard of us.

1
Name which oud you met
The medicinal reading and the smoky reading are barely the same experience
People use one word for two smells, and the confusion costs them money. The medicinal reading is balsamic and slightly sharp, sticky rather than burnt, and the comparisons people reach for are cupboards, hospitals and animals. The smoky reading is dry and charred, more bonfire than forest, and it usually comes with a tanned or tarry edge. If you tell me you like woods but not smoky oud, you have told me you met the second one. That is a diagnosis rather than a preference, and it is the most useful thing in your message, because the two readings are built from different material sets and are avoided by different words on a label.
Tip: Describe the oud you disliked in one physical comparison - cupboard, hospital, bonfire, tannery. That single word narrows a listing faster than any adjective on the box.

2
Learn the four words that actually make the smoke
The smoky reading is usually the company oud keeps, not the oud alone
This is the part worth carrying with you. A charred, leathery character in a fragrance comes overwhelmingly from four materials: aged tobacco, leather, birch tar and amber. A perfumer who wants darkness reaches for those, and a composition can smell distinctly smoky without any oud on its list at all. The reverse is also true: an oud in a bright composition with none of those four beside it reads much less smoky than the same oud in a dark one. So your dislike is worth four search terms rather than one. When you read a listing, scan for all of them. If tobacco and leather are both present, expect the reading you cannot wear, whatever the top notes promise.
Tip: Nawaab lists aged tobacco and leather outright. That is not concealment - it is the listing telling you exactly what to expect.
SOSA Adaa

3
Then rule out all three, not just the smoky one
Both readings are still oud, so the subtraction takes three of our four bottles
It would be easy to rule out Nawaab for its smoke and stop there, and it would leave you with two bottles you cannot wear. Ameeri's soft oudh and Mastani's oudh belong to the quieter reading, so neither is a smoky composition - but both have oud in the bottle, and you did not ask for a less smoky oud, you told me smoky oud is out and oud is the note you are avoiding. Soft is a dose, not an absence. So all three go, along with the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055, which is those same three bottles. Adaa is what survives, and the 3ml at ₹379 is how you test it, since we sell no sampler and the small bottle is the sample.

The SOSA principle
The smoky reading of oud is usually produced by the tobacco, leather, tar and amber sitting beside it, which means the dislike is worth four search terms rather than one.
And it cuts the other way too: a composition can read charred and leathery with no oud anywhere on its note list, so the word oud is not the only thing to scan for.
SOSA Adaa
The smoky bottle, named and ruled out: Nawaab is white royal oud with aged tobacco, leather and amber - the heaviest thing we make for skin, and off your list on both counts.

The four words that produce smoke

Keep this table open next time you are reading a note list, because these are the terms that decide whether a fragrance will read charred to you.

The SOSA shortlist
What to scan for on any listing, and what it means for your wrist
The word on the list What to do
Aged tobacco
Dry, leafy and slightly sour-sweet. One of the main producers of a smoky reading, and it appears in Nawaab alongside the white royal oud. Rules Nawaab out for you twice over.
Leather
Tanned, dry and faintly tarry. Rarely subtle. Also in Nawaab. A composition with both tobacco and leather will read charred whatever its top notes are.
Birch tar
The most literally smoky material in common use. If you see it, expect a bonfire. Nothing in the SOSA skin line lists it.
Amber
Warm, resinous and sweetish. It thickens a base and pushes a composition towards the dark reading rather than the smoky one. In Nawaab; not in Adaa.
Oudh, or soft oudh
The quieter, more medicinal reading. In Ameeri and in Mastani. Not smoky - and still oud, which is why both are ruled out here rather than offered as a compromise.
SOSA AdaaWhite musk
A dry musk, and the opposite decision: it keeps a base thin rather than thickening it. It is what Adaa has instead of any of the above. ₹379 for the 3ml.

If your request was really for actual wood rather than for the absence of smoke, the honest answer to that is a gap in our range and it is set out in which woody perfume oil to choose if oud is too heavy for you. And if the word you would actually use is dominating rather than present - a trace being acceptable where a centre is not - that is a different brief and it is answered in which attar smells modern, clean and woody without oud dominating. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.

SOSA Adaa
The quieter reading, also ruled out: Ameeri's soft oudh and Mastani's oudh are not smoky compositions, but both have oud in the bottle, and soft describes a dose rather than an absence.
Neither reading, at any dose
SOSA Adaa is ₹379 for 3ml - no oud, no tobacco, no leather, no amber.
See the SOSA Adaa Ask for an attar recommendation
The smoke you could not wear was probably never the oud. It was the tobacco and the leather sitting next to it, and those have names of their own.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
Why this particular bottle, for this particular reader
Nothing charred, nothing tanned, nothing resinous, and a base that stays thin

The SOSA attar specification

SOSA makes exactly four attars, and this page is easier to trust with all four in view, because the smoky one is ours and I would rather point at it than leave it out. Three of the four carry oud; the one that does not is in the first row. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The distinction on this page is a vocabulary tool, not a licence to stretch anything. SOSA makes exactly four attars and three of them contain oud - Nawaab in the smoky-leathery reading, Ameeri and Mastani in the quieter one, and all three are ruled out here by name along with the Pack of 3, which is those same three bottles. SOSA makes no oud-free woody attar, so that gap is named rather than filled. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes, and no note list is published for the solids at all, which is why this page cannot tell you whether one of them reads smoky. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only other thing I will promise you. Ask for an attar recommendation before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

The message I get in this shape is usually written with some frustration: I like woods, I have tried oud, and it smelled like something burning. The frustration is fair, because the category has been careless with one word. Two quite different smells are sold as oud, and being told you dislike oud when what you met was a bonfire is a bit like being told you dislike fruit after eating one bad lemon.

The perfumery is straightforward once it is laid out. Oud itself tends to read balsamic and slightly medicinal - sticky and dark rather than burnt. The charred, leathery quality that people call smoky oud comes mostly from the company it keeps: aged tobacco, leather, birch tar, amber. Those four materials are how darkness gets built, and they will make a composition smell smoky with no oud in it whatsoever. Nawaab is my own example of that construction and it says so on its listing: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather, amber. It is the heaviest thing I make and it is exactly what you are describing, so it is out. Ameeri's soft oudh and Mastani's oudh belong to the quieter reading and are not smoky - but they are still oud, and soft is a dose rather than an absence, so they are out too.

So my answer is one bottle and the smallest size of it: Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml, because we sell no sampler and the 3ml is the test. It has neither reading of oud and none of the four smoke materials. It is also not woody, which I would rather say plainly than let you infer, because we do not make an oud-free woody attar. I am ruling out Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and the Pack of 3, which is the first three in one box with Adaa left out. Adaa carries jasmine sambac, and you should hear that from me. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

I like woods but hate smoky oud - what attar would suit me?
SOSA Adaa, the 3ml at Rs 379. Oud reads two ways, medicinal-resinous or smoky-leathery, and the smoky reading usually comes from aged tobacco, leather, birch tar and amber sitting beside the oud. Nawaab is SOSA's smoky-leathery attar and is ruled out; Ameeri's soft oudh and Mastani's oudh are the quieter reading and are ruled out too, because both still contain oud. Adaa has neither, and it carries jasmine sambac.
What actually makes a fragrance smell smoky?
Four materials, mostly: aged tobacco, leather, birch tar and amber. They are how a perfumer builds darkness, and a composition can read charred with no oud on its note list at all. That is why the smoky quality you disliked was probably not the oud itself but its neighbours. Scan any listing for all four rather than only for the word oud, and if tobacco and leather both appear, expect the reading you cannot wear.
Is Ameeri's soft oudh different from Nawaab's oud?
Yes in character and no in kind. Ameeri's soft oudh belongs to the quieter, more medicinal reading and sits under Taif rose, real Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron, so Ameeri is not a smoky composition. Nawaab's white royal oud sits with aged tobacco, leather and amber, which is the smoky construction. But soft describes a dose rather than an absence, so if oud is the note you are avoiding, both bottles are out.
Does SOSA make a woody attar I could have instead?
Not an oud-free one, and I would rather say so than imply otherwise. The only woody note published in the range is sandalwood, and it appears in Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab, all three of which carry an oud. Adaa is the one oud-free attar and it has no woody note: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is dry rather than woody, and that distinction is the honest one.
Should I buy the Pack of 3 to compare the two readings?
No. The Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, which is to say all three SOSA attars that contain oud, with Adaa left out entirely. It is also three full-size bottles rather than a sampler, and SOSA sells no attar sampler or discovery set. For a reader avoiding oud it is the wrong purchase twice over. Buy the 3ml of a single attar instead: Adaa is Rs 379.

Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer.
