Founder Diaries · Scent Distribution · A Second Reed Diffuser
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
Before anything else, I want to say the thing nobody says to people who write to me with this sentence. What you have been doing is entirely rational. You were told, by us and by everybody else who sells home fragrance, that a reed diffuser makes a room smell of something. You bought one, it worked beautifully near the bottle, and the obvious conclusion from that premise is that a second one would make the room smell of it more. That is not a foolish habit. It is a correct inference drawn from a slightly wrong premise, and the premise was ours to state properly. So let me state it properly now: a reed diffuser does not make a room smell of something. It makes a zone smell of something. Buying a second one buys you a second zone.
Quick answers — read this first
Why it has not worked: every extra bottle raises emission — how much fragrance leaves the glass — and none of them adds transport, which is how far it gets. A reed has no fan, no pump and no heat, so nothing carries its vapour across a room. Two bottles make two concentration peaks with a valley between them, not one even plateau.

Free things to try before buying anything else: a ceiling fan on low in a closed room is the single best fix in this whole subject, because a fan is exactly the transport a reed lacks. Then halve the distance between the bottle and where you sit; put it at or just below nose height on a surface; keep it out of a draught but not in a dead corner; close the door.

If you want the whole room rather than another corner: Sukoon ₹1,899 — 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included. It moves air. It also dilutes the oil in water, adds humidity, needs filling and a socket.

The honest gap: between Safar ₹3,999 and Vaayu ₹11,999 there is no mid-sized waterless bedroom machine at SOSA, and Vaayu — 1000 m³, roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft — is the wrong purchase for one bedroom.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, there is a better solution, and the reason the current one is not working is structural rather than about quantity. A reed diffuser is a passive capillary device — oil climbs six fibre reeds and evaporates from their surface, with no energy input and nothing to push the vapour anywhere. Its concentration is highest at the reeds and falls away with distance. Adding bottles multiplies that shape; it does not flatten it. Three point sources in one room give you three strong places and the same weak middle.
What to do instead: try the free fixes first, because a large share of people with this exact complaint are solved by a ceiling fan on low and a bottle moved two metres closer. If that is not enough, the change that actually answers the requirement is a mechanism that moves air: an ultrasonic diffuser such as Sukoon at ₹1,899, or the waterless Safar at ₹3,999, which is named and sold as a car and travel diffuser and for which SOSA publishes no room coverage figure.
Shop: SOSA reed diffusers come in 50ml (₹749–₹849, up to about 150 sq ft, 6–8 weeks) and 130ml (₹1,249–₹1,349, above 150 sq ft, 14–18 weeks) only. Refills are 300ml ₹2,399, roughly six 50ml fills, for bottles you already own. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
I keep buying more reed diffusers and the room still is not stronger. What should I do?
1. First, hear that your reasoning was sound. If a diffuser scents a room, two scent it more — that follows perfectly. The flaw is not in the logic, it is in the first clause. A reed scents a zone. So the arithmetic you were doing was correct and the unit you were multiplying was wrong, and nobody told you which unit you had bought.

2. Understand the two quantities that this whole subject turns on. Emission is how much fragrance leaves the bottle: reed count, bottle size, room temperature, the oil itself. Transport is how far that fragrance then travels, and it depends entirely on moving air. A reed supplies emission and no transport at all. Every purchase you have made so far bought more of the first thing when the shortage was in the second.

3. Do the free things tonight, before you spend another rupee. Turn the ceiling fan on low with the door closed. Move the bottle so it is half as far from where you actually sit. Put it on a surface at or just below nose height, not on the floor and not on a high shelf. Keep it out of a direct draught but not in a dead corner. A meaningful number of people who write to me with your sentence never need to buy anything at all.

4. If you want the room rather than another corner, change the mechanism and not the quantity. Sukoon at ₹1,899 vibrates a water-and-oil mixture into a cool mist and pushes it out: 500ml tank, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents in the box. It genuinely moves air. In exchange the oil is diluted in water, the room gains humidity, the tank needs filling, and in a hard-water city you may see a fine white dust.

5. Keep the bottles you already own — they are not wasted, and they are not the same object as a machine. A reed is silent, needs no socket, has nothing to fill or charge, carries on through a power cut and never breaks, at roughly ₹13–₹15 a day. Put the spare bottles in the rooms that have none. That is the one arrangement where three bottles genuinely outperforms one.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: more bottles raise emission and add no transport, so they build extra peaks rather than one plateau. Ceiling fan on low and halve the distance, free. Then Sukoon ₹1,899, which moves air. Move the spare bottles to rooms that have none rather than stacking them in one.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The purchase that changes the shape rather than the amount
Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899
A 500ml tank, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, and three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included so you are not buying oil on day one. The difference is not that it is stronger — it is that it moves air, which is the one thing no number of reed bottles can be made to do. The honest costs: the oil is diluted in water, the output adds humidity, the tank has to be filled, hard water can leave white mineral dust, and it needs a socket and makes some sound. For one bedroom this is very often the correct answer, and I would not let anybody walk past it towards something dearer.

Why buying more was the sensible move, and where the instruction failed you

I want to spend a paragraph on this before any physics, because the tone of the answer matters more here than on any other page in this series. People arrive at a third bottle embarrassed. They should not be. Nobody buys a second diffuser out of carelessness; they buy it because they liked the first one and wanted more of the experience it gave them. That is the behaviour of a satisfied customer, not a confused one. The compliment inside your question is that the fragrance is good enough to be worth chasing. What went wrong is that the industry — mine included — describes these bottles with the phrase scents your room, and that phrase quietly promises a volume when what is being sold is a point.

Here is the honest version. Six fibre reeds standing in oil form a passive capillary device. The oil climbs the reeds and evaporates from their surface at whatever rate the room's temperature, humidity and airflow allow. There is no fan, no pump, no plate and no heat — no energy goes in, so nothing pushes anything out. Once a molecule leaves a reed it has only two ways of getting anywhere: molecular diffusion, which is genuine but far too slow to cross metres of a bedroom in any useful time, and whatever air the room happens to be moving already. That second process does nearly all the work, and it belongs to the room rather than to the bottle. Which is why the shape a reed produces is fixed: a peak at the source, falling away in every direction. You can move that peak, raise it, and make it last longer. You cannot detach it from the glass.

Now put two of those in one room and picture the result honestly. You get a strong place here, a strong place there, and between them a stretch of air that is the farthest point from both sources at once. That is not a plateau, it is a valley — and it is usually the middle of the room, which is where the sofa or the bed tends to be. A third bottle adds a third hill and the geometry does not improve; it simply gets busier. This is the reason the pattern repeats. Each purchase does exactly what it was designed to do and none of them addresses the thing you are actually short of.

The free fixes, given away first — because most of them work

I will not sell you a machine before I have given you everything that costs nothing, and I would say that even if it cost us the sale. These are in the order I would try them, and they are worth a full week before you decide anything.

FIX ONE · THE BEST FREE ONE
The ceiling fan you already have, on low
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799This belongs at the top of every list in this subject and it is nearly always buried at the bottom, under the products. A reed lacks transport. A fan is transport, and it is already screwed to your ceiling. Run it on the lowest setting with the door closed, keep the bottle a metre or two out of the direct downdraught rather than underneath the blades, and use all six reeds while you are testing. Give it a full day before you judge it. Two things are true at once and you deserve to hear both: it will improve the reach and it will shorten the life of the bottle, because air moving past the reeds evaporates oil faster. That is a real cost and it is yours to weigh, not mine to hide.
Why it works when a third bottle does not: it changes the transport term. Every bottle you have bought so far changed the emission term.

FIX TWO · FREE
Halve the distance, and get the height right
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749Since the concentration falls away from the source, the cheapest way to be in the strong part of it is to be closer to it. Halving the bottle-to-person distance does more for your experience than any change of scent, any extra reed and any second bottle — and it costs a walk across the room. Then check the height: at or slightly below nose height, on a surface, not on the floor where nobody's nose is and not on a high shelf where the vapour has nothing to reach. Keep it out of a direct draught, because air that leaves the room takes the fragrance with it, but not in a dead corner either, where the air never turns over at all. Finally, close the door. Containment is half of this equation and it is free.
The test that settles it: leave for fifteen minutes and walk back in. Better still, ask a visitor. You are adapted to your own home; they are not.

FIX THREE · FREE, AND OFTEN THE WHOLE ANSWER
Check whether it stopped working, or you stopped noticing
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849This is the one that most often ends the buying cycle, and it is uncomfortable in the nicest possible way. Receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes: the signal keeps arriving and the brain stops forwarding it. So somebody can sit in a properly scented room and honestly report smelling nothing — and then buy another bottle to fix a room that was never the problem. If guests remark on the smell and you cannot detect it, it is working for everybody except you, which is expected rather than unusual. The related truth worth knowing is that a fragrance you can smell continuously is set too strong for the room. Home fragrance is meant to register on arrival and at transitions, not as a permanent background hum.
Before the next purchase: step out for a quarter of an hour, come back in, and ask one other person. That is the whole diagnostic.

What each bottle actually bought you, laid out plainly

It helps to see the purchases as a sequence rather than as a habit, because as a sequence they are a perfectly reasonable experiment and the result is genuinely useful. You have now demonstrated, at your own expense, that the ceiling is structural rather than a matter of dose. That is worth knowing and it is not the same as having wasted money. The table below is what each step added, and — the row people find most clarifying — what none of them added.

Emission against transport
Every bottle raised one quantity and left the other untouched
What you added What it raised What it did to the room What it did not do
The first 50ml, well placed ★ Emission, from nothing Created one fragrant zone, correctly Nothing missing — this is the product working
All six reeds instead of three Emission, roughly doubled A stronger zone, and a bottle that empties in half the time Did not widen the zone by a step
A 130ml instead of a 50ml Duration, from 6–8 weeks to 14–18 The same reach for far longer Volume is a duration figure, never a coverage one
A second bottle across the room Emission, doubled Two peaks with a valley between them, the valley being the middle Added no transport, so no plateau
A third bottle Emission, tripled Three peaks, roughly ₹39–₹45 a day in one room, indefinitely Still no moving air, so still no evenness
A ceiling fan on low ★ Transport, from nothing The first change that alters the shape rather than the size Costs nothing; shortens the bottle's life

The machine that moves air, the oil it takes, and the reed worth keeping
The SOSA principle
You cannot fix a transport problem by increasing emission. More bottles is more of the answer to a different question.
Which is why the second and third purchases disappoint in precisely the same way as the first — not less, and not differently.

I am not going to pretend that one bottle per home is a rule, because it is not, and there are four situations where owning several is the correct arrangement rather than a symptom. The first is a long or L-shaped room used at both ends — a bedroom with a desk at the far wall, a living-dining space where you eat in one half and sit in the other. If you occupy two places and rarely the middle, then two zones centred on those two places is exactly right, and the valley between them is in a spot nobody stands. The second is two rooms that are really one volume, divided by an archway rather than a door. The third is wanting different scents in different zones, which no single machine can do and which several bottles do effortlessly. And the fourth is a budget that is genuinely short of a machine, in which case a second ₹749 bottle placed where you actually sit is a sound purchase and I would rather you made it than stretched.

What none of those four cases is, is the one you have described. You are not distributing bottles across zones you occupy; you are stacking them in a single room hoping the peaks will merge into a field. They will not merge, because merging requires something to carry the vapour off the peaks and into the space between, and neither bottle moves any air. This is the difference between a deliberate two-zone arrangement and an escalation, and the tell is simple: if you had to think about where the second bottle went, it was a design; if you bought it hoping it would make the first one work, it was an escalation.

There is one more thing worth saying before you buy anything, because it is the most common mistake made in the opposite direction. More reeds is not better, it is stronger and shorter. Six is full projection; three is a soft bedside level and roughly doubles the life of the bottle. If a room has ever felt cloying rather than fragrant, that is nearly always over-dosing rather than a scent being wrong for you. And in a small bathroom, two or three reeds in a 50ml can make it run close to three months rather than eight weeks, which is a better piece of value than anything on our shelf.

Buying a third diffuser to make a room even is like adding lamps to make a room brighter in the one place you did not put a lamp.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

What to buy instead, and what I would talk you out of

In order of cost, with the free option first and meant seriously. Note the compatibility warning in row five, which is the likeliest disappointment when anybody moves from reeds to a machine, and the honest gap in our own range at the bottom.

The honest ladder
Free, then ₹1,899, then ₹3,999 — and where to stop
Buy What it is When it is the right answer Price
1. Ceiling fan on low, door closed, bottle moved closer ★ Borrowed transport for the bottles you already own Always first. It is the only free change that alters the shape of the problem Free
2. Redistribute the bottles you have One in each room that has none, rather than three in one room Immediately. Three zones in three rooms is the arrangement three bottles is good at Already paid for
3. Sukoon ultrasonic 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18h on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included. Moves air When you want the room rather than another corner and one bedroom is the whole job. Never skip it for something dearer ₹1,899
4. Safar waterless Undiluted oil as a dry mist, 20ml, 2000 mAh Type-C, cordless, three speeds, 1/2/3-hour timer. Named and sold as a car and travel diffuser; SOSA publishes no room coverage figure for it When water, dilution, humidity or mineral dust are the objection and you will switch it on deliberately. Buy one, not several ₹3,999
5. The right oil for the mechanism Reed oil cannot go into an ultrasonic; the water-based Hotel Collection cannot go into reeds; Safar takes pure fragrance oil. The ₹299 15ml is a machine refill, never a first purchase Read before you order, not after. Switching mechanism may mean switching scent 15ml ₹299 · 100ml ₹999
The honest gap: no mid-sized waterless bedroom machine Nothing at SOSA sits between Safar ₹3,999 and Vaayu ₹11,999, and Vaayu at 1000 m³ — roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft — is the wrong purchase for one bedroom, where nine-tenths of it is wasted Named rather than sold around ₹1,899 / ₹3,999
Honest notes for buyers: SOSA reed diffusers come in 50ml and 130ml only — there is no 100ml or 200ml SOSA reed. They are alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. There is no published figure for how far a reed diffuser projects and none is invented here; reach depends on room volume, containment and air movement. No coverage figure exists for Safar and none is quoted. SOSA publishes no oil-consumption rate for its machines, so no machine running cost is computed on this page. Fragrance does not remove an unwanted smell — deal with the source, then ventilate, then add fragrance. Free shipping above ₹499. SOSA reed diffuser refills
If you are going to keep several bottles anyway
300ml refill ₹2,399
This is the item on our shelf most often bought by mistake, because it is oil alone — no bottle, no reeds — and it does nothing for somebody buying into SOSA for the first time. But for you it is the sensible line, because you already own the glass. The 300ml is roughly six 50ml fills, which is the honest answer for anybody tired of repurchasing whole bottles for the same room. The cheapest genuine way in remains a 50ml at ₹749; the refill is for the person who is already here. 500ml is ₹3,499.

A note from Sonal

This is the letter I am least comfortable receiving, and it has nothing to do with the person writing it. Somebody has spent two or three times what they meant to, and they are apologising to me. They should not be apologising. If the only description anyone gives you of a product is that it scents your room, and it plainly does scent part of your room, then buying another is not an error of judgement. It is the most reasonable next step available, and the reason it did not work was never written on the box.

So the sentence I want on this page, in plain words, is this. A reed diffuser is a beautiful passive object and it produces a fragrant zone, not a fragranced room. That is the design and not a defect — it is exactly why it can sit silently on a table for six to eight weeks with nothing to fill, nothing to charge, nothing to switch on and nothing to remember, working right through a power cut, at about thirteen or fifteen rupees a day, and never breaking, because there is nothing in it to break. What it cannot do is carry itself across a room, and no quantity of them can be persuaded to.

Try the fan. Genuinely try it, on low, with the door shut, for two nights, and move the bottle closer to where you sit while you are at it. If that settles it, you have my blessing to close this page and buy nothing. If it does not, go to Sukoon at ₹1,899 and stop there for one bedroom — and take the bottles you already own into the rooms that have none, where three of them will do what three of them are good at. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Will buying more reed diffusers make my room smell stronger?
It will make more places in the room smell strong, which is not the same thing. Each bottle is a point source with no transport, so two produce two concentration peaks with a valley between them and three produce three. Extra bottles raise emission — how much fragrance leaves the glass — and add nothing to transport, which is how far it travels. Only moving air does that, which is why a ceiling fan on low outperforms a third bottle and costs nothing.
Was I wrong to buy a second one?
No. Anybody told that a diffuser scents a room would reasonably conclude that two scent it more; the inference is sound and the premise was imprecise. A reed diffuser scents a zone. Where a second bottle genuinely earns its place is a long or L-shaped room used at both ends, two rooms that are really one volume, wanting different scents in different zones, or a budget short of a machine.
Would a bigger bottle work better than several small ones?
It would last longer and reach exactly as far. Bottle volume is a duration specification, not a coverage one: a 130ml runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml. The clearest proof sits in our own range — Megh at ₹3,499 holds six litres and runs about a hundred hours, and covers only around 215 sq ft, less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon's 270–320. Capacity buys runtime; it does not buy room.
Can I move my favourite reed fragrance into a machine?
No, and not in the other direction either. Reed oil is formulated for capillary wicking on a heat-stable CCT carrier and cannot go into an ultrasonic machine; the water-based Hotel Collection is made for ultrasonic diffusion and cannot go into reeds, and there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser; Safar takes pure fragrance oil and can be clogged by anything thick, sticky or water-based. Switching mechanism may mean switching scent, so plan for it rather than being surprised by it.
Has my diffuser stopped working, or have I stopped noticing it?
Almost always the second, and it is worth checking before another purchase. Receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes — the signal keeps arriving and the brain stops reporting it. Leave the room for fifteen minutes and walk back in, and ask somebody who does not live there. A visitor is a better instrument than you are in your own home. If guests notice it and you do not, it is working for everybody but you.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, for readers who have bought several reed diffusers for one room in the hope of a stronger result. The reasoning separates emission — how much fragrance leaves the bottle — from transport, how far it travels, and explains why two or more passive sources produce multiple concentration peaks rather than an even field. No projection distance is quoted for any reed diffuser and no room coverage figure is quoted for Safar, because none is published. Longevity and cost-per-day figures assume ordinary Indian household use and vary with room size, ventilation, temperature and reed count. Review quotations are from verified SOSA buyers.
