Every step goes down. If any step goes up, you have found your problem.
Quick answers — read this first
How should fragrance intensity change through a hotel? Downward at every step: legible in the lobby, a whisper in the lift lobby, nothing in the car, nothing or nearly nothing in the corridor, and lowest of all in the room.

Why must it descend? Because it reads as the building quietening as a guest goes deeper, and because each space downstream is already receiving air from the ones before it.

Should any step be zero? Yes. The lift car always, and the corridor in most properties. A scheme that knows where to stop reads as more considered than one that runs everywhere.
The short answer
Short answer: Legible, whisper, zero, nearly nothing, lowest. Every step down, never up.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) as the flagship delivery gift; volume gifts from ₹299; reed diffusers from ₹749; the Vaayu (₹11,999) for your own premises.

Customer gifting that compounds - the SOSA method at a glanceStep 1 - gift the moment: delivery day, possession, checkout, milestone purchaseStep 2 - set the per-unit band: ₹299 to ₹3,999 by customer valueStep 3 - brand the gesture: your card, your story, our fragranceStep 4 - pilot small, then scale to 50, 100, 500 unitsWhatsApp the bulk desk for volume pricing
A customer gift works when it survives the drive home - sweets vanish in a day and keychains join a drawer, but a fragrance is used daily in the customer's own car or living room, replaying your brand at every use. The method: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, brand the gesture with your card, pilot and scale. This guide walks the exact play, with real SOSA options at every band.
Straight answer
How should fragrance intensity change from lobby to elevator to corridor to guest room?
Down at every step, and one of the steps is zero. The gradient is the design; everything else is equipment. Lobby: the working level, and the word for it is legible rather than impressive. It is the only space where a guest is alert, upright and arriving from outside, so the identity lands here and everything else is measured from it. Lift lobby: a whisper. Every guest passes it twice on every journey, so it carries continuity - but set well below the main lobby, because its output loads the lift car at every stop and feeds the corridor continuously. Lift car: nothing at all. The smallest volume in the building, up to twelve people in it, ventilation you do not control, and nobody able to leave until the doors open. Corridor: nothing, or very nearly. It already receives room air at every door opening, shaft air and trolley air, and it clears almost none of it. Guest room: lowest in the building, or nothing, set lying on the bed rather than judged from the doorway. If any step in that sequence goes up, you have found your problem before a guest did. Hotel Collection from ₹299, SOSA Megh ₹3,499, SOSA Boond ₹799. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Four steps down, and one of them is zero

The gradient is the whole design of a hotel scenting scheme, and everything else - which register, which machine, which supplier - is equipment. So it is worth defining each step properly, and by an outcome rather than by a number, because settings do not transfer between buildings. A setting is an input, what a guest experiences is an output, and the transformation between them is the building: its volume, its air handling, its door frequency, its ceiling height, its materials and its local humidity. Two hotels running the same number produce two different results. Define the result and let each property record the number that achieves it. Step one, the lobby: the working level. This is the reference everything else is measured against, and the right word for it is legible rather than impressive. Define it as: somebody entering from the street at the busiest hour notices, without forming a thought, that the air has changed - and could not describe it accurately afterwards. Three reasons it stays modest even though it is the highest in the building. The guest arriving is not neutral; they have come off a hot street or an airport road, so what they perceive is the contrast rather than the absolute level, and raising it converts a registered change into a noticed fragrance. The same guest crosses this lobby perhaps eight times in three nights, so anything striking at the first encounter is tiring by the twelfth. And a lobby is the hardest space in the property to hold anyway, with the strongest air handling, an entrance substituting a slice of air outright at every opening, and often a double-height volume where warm air rises into a band nobody breathes. Step two, the lift lobby: a whisper. This zone earns more than any other in a hotel, because every guest passes one twice on every journey and it is a proper enclosed room that holds a level reliably, unlike the corridor beside it. Define it as: a guest stepping out of the lift feels they are in the same building they walked into, without noticing anything in particular. Set it well below the main lobby for a specific reason - its output is not staying there. It loads the lift car every time the doors open, and it feeds the corridor continuously, so a lift lobby set too high is the commonest single cause of a lift that smells strong. Keep the source on a side wall rather than beside the doors, because an arriving car acts as a piston and pushes anything in that path straight into itself. Step three, the lift car: nothing at all, and this is the one step where we would say never rather than rarely. A car is the smallest enclosed volume in the property, a few cubic metres, which reaches a steady level in seconds and then holds it because there is nowhere for anything to go. Occupancy swings from empty to eight or twelve people between two floors. Ventilation is whatever the lift manufacturer provided - a small fan and some clearances, designed for temperature and code compliance rather than clearing - and you cannot adjust it. And nobody can leave until the doors open, which puts your least tolerant guest and your most sensitive one in the same box with no exit. Anything a person cannot escape should be set well below a space they pass through, and in a lift that means zero. Step four, the corridor: nothing, or very nearly. A corridor is not a room, it is the interval between two rooms, and it is already carrying a great deal. Every guest room delivers a parcel of its air into the corridor at each door opening, the lift shaft delivers lobby air onto every floor continuously, housekeeping trolleys move linen and product down it for hours with room doors propped during service, and stairwells and risers add their own. Against that, a typical internal hotel corridor has no external wall, no openable window and no extraction of its own, so it clears almost nothing. Adding a working level stacks a fifth source onto four, which produces exactly what guests describe as a hotel smelling of too many things at once. Define the outcome as: a guest walking from the lift to their door notices nothing. Where you want a token of continuity along a long hall, a reed at Rs 749 to Rs 849 at a very low level is the right scale - continuous, silent, invisible and impossible to turn up, which matters because corridors drift fastest of all. Step five, the guest room: the lowest level in the building, or nothing. Four things make this the quietest space: it is a small sealed volume that reaches a steady level in minutes and then holds it, so an error does not clear but sits there all night; it is occupied for hours continuously, including eight asleep; the guest is horizontal with their head on a pillow rather than upright and moving; and they cannot leave when they have had enough. Define the outcome as: opening the door produces clean air and nothing describable, and lying on the bed for two minutes produces the same. That last part is the instruction that matters most - set the room from the bed rather than the doorway, because a level barely perceptible standing up can be considerable down there. In many properties nothing at all is the honest answer for a bedroom, with the quality coming from airing, a dry bathroom, refilled drain traps and correctly laundered linen. A scheme that knows where to stop reads as more considered than one that runs everywhere. Now three rules that hold across the whole sequence. The register never changes, only the level - a guest crosses five or six thresholds between the porte-cochere and their bed, and a change of level at each reads as the building quietening as they go deeper, which is the right story for a place people come to rest, while a change of register reads as a fault. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, is the safest whole-property choice precisely because it holds character from a working level to a whisper; Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, is dry and structural; White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, is the softest we make and suits rooms. Old-World Glamour and Lobby Bar are public-space registers only. All seven are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, they are SOSA's own interpretations, and we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. Second rule: the direction is never negotiable. A flat level throughout reads as automated rather than designed, because a building that hums identically everywhere tells a guest a system was installed rather than a sequence composed. An ascending gradient - which happens when rooms get attention through a refurbishment or an amenity programme while the lobby is left alone - produces a building that gets louder as a guest approaches their bed, and the specific complaint of a room that feels heavy at eleven at night. If you get one thing right, get the direction right. Third rule: write the whole sequence on one page and check that it descends. Every zone, its device, its register, its setting, its position and the date it was set, plus seasonal dates since humid air carries fragrance more slowly and clears it less readily so the same setting reads heavier in a wet month, and one named owner. Then audit it in the order a guest experiences it: lobby, lift lobby, car, corridor, room - monthly, with somebody who does not work in the building, at four in the afternoon rather than at ten. Your own team cannot do this, because everybody who works in a hotel adapts to a steady background within about an hour of arriving and stops perceiving it, and adaptation is asymmetric, so a level never seems to have grown, only to have gone - which with three shifts a day means every correction anybody makes is upward. On hardware: a Vaayu at Rs 11,999 suits a large open lobby, waterless with no tank at all, coverage up to 1,000 square metres or roughly 10,700 square feet, with Bluetooth app and timer control; a Megh at Rs 3,499 with its 6L tank a substantial lobby; a Sukoon at Rs 1,799 a compact reception or a lift lobby; and a reed at Rs 749 to Rs 849 or a Boond at Rs 799 a guest room, with reeds giving three to four months from a bottle and refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage them. We make no therapeutic, medical or wellness claims of any kind, and SOSA ambient fragrance is for the air of a room only. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against a zone list on WhatsApp.

Why this works
The four steps
1 Lobby: legible in the first ten seconds 2 Lift lobby: a whisper. Lift car: nothing at all 3 Corridor: nothing, or very nearly 4 Guest room: lowest in the building, or nothing
The flagship delivery gift: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - a rechargeable waterless car diffuser with three hotel-inspired scents in the box. Per-unit gifts from ₹299; volume pricing on WhatsApp.
01
Lobby, then lift lobby
Legible, then a whisper
The lobby is the reference and the word for it is legible rather than impressive. The lift lobby carries continuity but sits well below, because its output loads the car and feeds the corridor.
Tip: Contrast does most of an arrival. Volume does not.
02
Car at zero, corridor at nearly zero
The two steps properties resist
A car is a few cubic metres with twelve people, ventilation you do not control and no exit. A corridor already carries rooms, the shaft, trolleys and risers, and clears almost none of it.
03
Room lowest, set from the bed
And the direction is never negotiable
Small sealed volume, hours of exposure, horizontal guest, no escape. Flat reads as automated; ascending produces a room that feels heavy at eleven at night, which is the commonest serious error.
Tip: Define each step as an outcome. Settings do not transfer.
The SOSA principle
If any step in the sequence goes up,
you have found your problem before a guest did.

The gradient is the design. Everything else is equipment

The gradient is the whole design; everything else is equipment. Define each step by an outcome rather than a number, because a setting is an input, what a guest experiences is an output, and the building is the transformation - so two hotels running the same number get two results. The lobby carries the working level, and the word is legible rather than impressive: somebody entering at the busiest hour notices the air has changed without forming a thought, and could not describe it afterwards. It stays modest despite being highest, because the guest arrives from a stronger environment so contrast does the work, because the same guest crosses it eight times in three nights, and because it is the hardest space to hold anyway. The lift lobby is a whisper - it earns more than any zone, being passed twice per journey and holding a level reliably unlike the corridor - but sits well below the main lobby because its output loads the car at every stop and feeds the corridor continuously, which makes a high lift lobby the commonest cause of a strong lift. The car is zero, and this is the one step where never is the right word: a few cubic metres reaching a steady level in seconds, up to twelve people, ventilation set by the manufacturer, and nobody able to leave. The corridor is nothing or nearly, since it already carries room air at every door opening, shaft air, trolley air and risers, while clearing almost none of it, so a working level stacks a fifth source onto four. And the room is lowest or nothing, set lying on the bed rather than from the doorway - small sealed volume, hours of exposure, a horizontal guest, and no escape. Three rules across all of it: the register never changes and only the level does; the direction is never negotiable, since flat reads as automated and ascending produces a room heavy at eleven at night; and the sequence goes on one page and gets checked in the order a guest walks it.

The SOSA business gifting edit

Whatever your business gifts, the logic is the same: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, keep the register gentle and crowd-safe, and brand the gesture with your card rather than your logo on the product. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so every customer gift quietly gives twice. Here is the full business range by per-unit band.

Honest notes for business gifters: customer taste varies, so volume programmes should run gentle, crowd-tested registers - fresh, clean and lightly floral scents are received well across every profile, and space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) avoid the personal-taste risk of skin perfume entirely. Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing, pilot batches, branded cards and custom hamper builds are quoted on WhatsApp - and signature-scent development for your brand is a consultation with our perfumer, not an off-the-shelf item, so timelines are discussed case by case. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic diffusers use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - the two are not interchangeable. All personal fragrances are alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant. WhatsApp bulk desk: +91 96192 18531. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.

And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

How should intensity change through a hotel?
Downward at every step: legible in the lobby, a whisper in the lift lobby, nothing in the car, nothing or nearly nothing in the corridor, and lowest of all in the room.
Why must it descend?
Because it reads as the building quietening as a guest goes deeper, and because each space downstream already receives air from the ones before it.
Which steps should be zero?
The lift car always, and the corridor in most properties. A scheme that knows where to stop reads as more considered than one running everywhere.
What is the most serious error?
An ascending gradient, usually caused by rooms getting attention while the lobby is left alone. It produces a room that feels heavy at eleven at night.
Why define outcomes rather than settings?
Because a setting is an input and the building transforms it, so the same number in two hotels produces two different results. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the customer-gifting advice applies whatever your business finally buys.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
