Every footwear store has a room it would rather customers did not smell, and a door that lets them. The good news is that this is one of the few problems in retail with genuinely mechanical answers - hinges, seals, fans and pressure - and none of them involves choosing a fragrance.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I stop stockroom smells reaching the shop floor? Four things, in order. Fit a self-closing door so it cannot be left or propped open. Seal the leaks - a brush seal or threshold under the leaf, proper stops around the frame, and anything obvious around service penetrations. Put extraction in the stockroom pulling air out of the building rather than stirring it around. And use that extraction to keep the stockroom slightly negative in pressure to the shop floor, so when the door does open, air moves from the showroom inward rather than from the stockroom outward. Then reduce what is in the room: fewer boxes, off the floor, moving faster.

What does keeping the stockroom negative in pressure actually mean? It means arranging things so slightly more air is drawn out of the stockroom than finds its way in, which makes air flow from the shop floor into the stockroom and then out of the building. Practically, that is an extract fan in the stockroom ducted to outside, with the showroom being the place air comes from. The effect is that the stockroom stops being a source that empties onto your floor and becomes a sink that draws from it. What size of extract achieves that in your building is a ventilation engineer's question, not a perfumer's.

Is a curtain or an air freshener in the stockroom any use? A heavy curtain is better than nothing where a door cannot be fitted, but it is a poor substitute: it does not seal, it does not close itself, and it does nothing about pressure. An air freshener in the stockroom is worse than useless, because you are adding a scent to concentrated air that is about to travel onto your sales floor - so the showroom then receives both. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour. Spend the money on a door closer and a seal instead.
The short answer
Short answer: Isolate the air rather than scenting it. Fit a self-closing door, seal around the frame and under the leaf, extract from the stockroom to outside, and aim to keep that room slightly negative in pressure to the shop floor so air travels inward when the door opens. Add door discipline during peak trading, and reduce the box count inside. All of it is mechanical, and all of it outperforms fragrance.
The pick: Buy a door closer, a threshold seal and, if the building allows, an extract fan ducted outside. That is the answer to this page. Nothing we sell belongs in a stockroom, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Next step: Describe the door, what it opens onto and whether the stockroom has any extraction, and we will tell you what to change first - ask for a store scenting plan.
Hinges, seals, fans and pressureA self-closing door, so it cannot be propped at peakSeal the leaf, the frame and the obvious penetrationsExtract from the stockroom, ducted to outsideKeep it slightly negative to the shop floorThen reduce what is inside: fewer boxes, moving faster
Isolating stockroom air is mechanical work - a closer, a seal, a fan and a pressure relationship. It outperforms every fragrance decision in the building.
Straight answer
How do I keep stockroom air out of the customer showroom in a shoe store?
By treating it as an airflow problem with mechanical answers, which is exactly what it is. Start with the door, because it is the cheapest meaningful change in a footwear store. Fit a closer so it shuts itself every time. That removes the two failures that cause most of the problem: the door left ajar by whoever last fetched a size, and the door deliberately propped during peak trading because staff are in and out of it constantly. A closer costs less than a mid-size reed diffuser and will do more for how your store smells than anything I sell. Then seal the leaks, because a closed door with a large gap under it is a permanent opening between the two rooms. A brush seal or threshold strip under the leaf, proper stops around the frame, and attention to any obvious gap where services pass through the wall will all help. While you are there, look at what the door opens onto: a stockroom door facing the trying area or the entrance is worse than one onto a back corridor, because it empties into the place customers stand. If you are still at design stage, that orientation is worth arguing for. Then extraction, which is what actually empties the room. An extract fan in the stockroom ducted to outside takes the concentrated air out of the building rather than stirring it. It also does something more valuable: it makes the stockroom slightly negative in pressure relative to the shop floor, so that when the door opens, air moves from the showroom into the stockroom instead of the reverse. That single relationship changes a footwear store more than any product decision. The room stops being a source that vents onto your floor and becomes a sink that draws from it. What size of extract achieves that depends on your volume, your building and what else is running, and it is a question for a ventilation engineer rather than for me. Then reduce the load inside: fewer boxes on site, everything on racking off the floor and off external walls, outer cartons removed on delivery day, and stock rotated so nothing stands sealed for months. What not to do is scent the stockroom. Adding a fragrance to concentrated air that is about to travel onto your sales floor means the showroom receives both, and we make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour, or that it cleans or purifies air. Isolate the air; do not perfume it. Ask for a store scenting plan once the door behaves.
Closer, seal, extract, pressure - then less stock inside. Nothing goes in the stockroom, and the showroom signature comes afterwards.
For the showroom, once the door work is done: SOSA Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - from ₹849 for a leather-led floor. Passive and waterless, so nothing damp goes near board or leather. It is not a claim about the stockroom, which needs a fan and a closer rather than a fragrance.

What to actually buy, by size

To be explicit, because this page is about a room rather than a product: nothing below goes in the stockroom, and nothing below isolates it. These are showroom registers for a store that has already fitted the closer, sealed the door and sorted the extraction. If you are choosing between a reed and a door closer this month, buy the door closer - it is cheaper and it will change the building more.

Three things that decide it

Three pieces of work, in the order they change the building.

1
First, the door and the discipline
A closer removes the two failures that cause most of the problem
Two habits let stockroom air onto the floor: the door left ajar, and the door propped open on purpose during peak trading because staff are in and out forty times an hour. A closer fixes the first entirely and makes the second an obvious, deliberate act rather than a drift - which is usually enough for it to stop. Combine it with a simple rule the team can actually follow: the stockroom door is never propped, and if the volume of trips makes that impractical, the answer is better size-runs on the floor rather than an open door. Then seal what is left. A brush seal or threshold under the leaf, decent stops around the frame, and a look at any service penetration through the wall. A closed door with a two-centimetre gap beneath it is not a closed door.
Tip: if the team props it, ask why. Usually it is because the fast-moving sizes are not on the floor, which is a merchandising fix rather than a door fix.

2
Second, extraction and the pressure relationship
Make the stockroom a sink rather than a source
This is the piece most stores never do and the one that changes the most. An extract fan in the stockroom, ducted to outside, removes the concentrated air rather than moving it around, and by taking more air out than leaks in it puts the room slightly below the shop floor in pressure. The consequence is the useful part: when somebody opens the door, air flows from the showroom into the stockroom, so the room draws rather than vents. Every trip for a size then stops being a small release onto your floor. Get the direction right and it works continuously, without anyone remembering anything. Sizing, ducting and make-up air all depend on your building and your other equipment, so specify it with a ventilation engineer - I will describe the principle and stay out of the numbers.
Tip: hold a tissue at the open doorway. Toward the stockroom is right; toward the showroom means the room is still venting at you.
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser
Morning Freshness - lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus - is the sneaker-showroom register, from ₹749.

3
Third, reduce what is behind the door
Isolation works better when the room is quieter to begin with
Isolation and extraction handle the transfer; reducing the load handles the source. Hold less depth on site where your supply chain allows, and clear stock that is genuinely dead, because it is contributing smell and nothing else. Get every carton onto racking with a gap underneath and off external walls, since damp board smells mustier than dry board and floor-level storage in monsoon is the worst case. Leave air space between runs rather than building solid blocks. Break down outer shipping cartons and remove them the day they arrive - they have just come out of a container and are the loudest board in the building. And rotate, so nothing stands sealed for months. A quieter stockroom makes every other fix on this page work harder.
SOSA Fresh & Grounded Reed Duo
The Fresh and Grounded duo is for two-zone showrooms, from ₹1,548 - and neither reed goes behind the door.

The SOSA principle
Isolate the air. Do not perfume it. A stockroom that draws from the shop floor has stopped being a problem; one that vents onto it never will be solved by fragrance.
Closer, seal, extract, pressure, less stock. Five mechanical moves, and not one of them is something we sell.

For the showroom, afterwards: Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - the dry-wood register for a leather-led floor. From ₹849.

Zone by zone

The isolation plan. The first four rows are hinges, seals, fans and housekeeping.

The SOSA plan
Keeping stockroom air where it belongs
Step What to do
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed DiffuserFit a closer
A self-closing door removes both the ajar door and the propped door. It costs less than a mid-size reed diffuser.
Seal the gaps
Brush seal or threshold under the leaf, proper stops around the frame, and attention to service penetrations through the wall.
Extract to outside
A stockroom extract ducted out of the building, sized by a ventilation engineer, so the room empties rather than stirs.
Get the direction right
Aim for the stockroom slightly negative to the shop floor, so air travels inward when the door opens rather than outward.

Why that room is so loud is explained in why the stockroom smells stronger than the showroom, and the packaging side of the load is in whether boxes and packaging affect the whole store. SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with any hotel or footwear brand named for reference.

SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser
For a sneaker-led showroom: Morning Freshness - Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus - cool, dry and waterless. From ₹749.
Buy the closer before you buy the reed
A door closer, a threshold seal and an extract fan will change your store more than anything on this page. We would rather you started there.
See the SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser Book a scenting plan
Get the direction of travel right and the stockroom stops being a room that visits your customers. It becomes a room that quietly draws from them instead.

Nothing in this table goes behind the stockroom door, and nothing in it isolates a stockroom. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour, or that it cleans, purifies or disinfects air. Isolation is a closer, a seal, an extract and the right pressure relationship, and the sizing of that extract is a ventilation engineer's question - we make no claim about it. We make no claim that scent affects sales, footfall, browsing or what anybody buys. Ask for a store scenting plan once the door is doing its job.

A note from Sonal

I have started asking to see the stockroom door before I look at anything else in a footwear store, and the answer is usually visible in three seconds. Is there a closer on it. Is there a gap under it you could post a catalogue through. Is it wedged open with a box of tissue paper because it is Saturday. Those three observations explain most of what an owner has written to me about, and none of them is a fragrance question.

The bit that surprises people is the pressure relationship. Once a stockroom is extracting to outside and sitting slightly below the shop floor, opening the door stops releasing anything onto the sales area - air travels the other way. It is an unglamorous piece of engineering that quietly does the job every hour the store is open, without anybody having to remember a rule.

The limits, plainly. Ambient fragrance is an interior and brand decision, and we make no claim that it increases sales, footfall, browsing or influences what anyone buys. We make no therapeutic, medical or wellbeing claim of any kind, and none about ventilation design. It never masks a smell that has a source, nothing we make belongs in a stockroom, and staff judgement outranks mine. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop stockroom smells entering the customer showroom?
Fit a self-closing door, seal under the leaf and around the frame, extract from the stockroom to outside, and aim to keep that room slightly negative in pressure to the shop floor so air travels inward when the door opens. Then reduce the load inside: fewer boxes, off the floor, outer cartons removed on delivery day, and stock rotated.
Should I put an air freshener in the stockroom?
No. You would be adding a scent to concentrated air that is about to travel onto your sales floor, so the showroom receives both. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour. The stockroom needs a door closer, a seal and an extract fan, and the money is far better spent there.
My staff prop the stockroom door open. What should I do?
Ask why first. It is almost always because the fast-moving sizes are not on the floor, so the team is making forty trips an hour, which makes propping the door the only sane response. Fix the merchandising and the trips fall away. Then fit a closer so the door cannot drift open, and make the no-propping rule explicit.
Would a curtain work instead of a door?
It is better than an open doorway and much worse than a door. A curtain does not seal, does not close itself and does nothing about the pressure relationship between the two rooms. If a door genuinely cannot be fitted, a heavy curtain plus stockroom extraction is the compromise, with the extraction doing most of the work.
What should the stockroom extract be rated at?
That depends on the volume of the room, the building, the make-up air available and whatever else is running, so it is a question for a ventilation engineer rather than for a perfumer. We can describe the principle - extract to outside, keep the room slightly negative to the shop floor - but we make no claim about numbers or provision.

Stockroom isolation is mechanical work: a door that closes itself, sealing under the leaf and around the frame, extraction ducted to outside, and a pressure relationship that makes air travel inward rather than out.
