Does the upper floor need its own machine? Often less than expected, and sometimes none if the staircase is open. If the stair is enclosed by a door, the floors are separate zones and it does.
Why is the first floor often too strong? Because warm air rises through the stairwell continuously, so the upper floor accumulates what the ground floor produces, on top of anything installed there.
The staircase is a chimney, and it runs one way
A two-floor showroom is not two rooms of similar size that happen to be stacked. It is one system with a strong directional flow through it, and understanding that flow saves both money and a great deal of discomfort upstairs. The governing fact is that warm air rises. Every building with an open connection between levels has a continuous upward current through it, and a staircase in a retail showroom is an efficient chimney: warmer air from the ground floor, which has a street door opening all day, lights on, people in it and often a warmer aspect, moves upward through the stairwell and is replaced by cooler air drawn along at ground level. That current runs all day, and it carries whatever the ground floor's air contains. Two consequences follow that are the opposite of what most stores assume. The first is that the upper floor is usually over-scented rather than under-scented in a two-storey store that specified both floors identically. It receives an ongoing supply from below, added to whatever is installed on the floor itself, which means the two accumulate. Stores discover this indirectly: the first floor gets described as stuffy, or staff who work upstairs are the ones who complain, or a customer remarks on the fragrance upstairs but never downstairs. The instinct at that point is to look for a source of staleness. The actual cause is arithmetic. The second consequence is that the effect strengthens through the day and through the year. The ground floor warms up as the day goes on, and display lighting is a heat source that feeds the same rising column, so the current is stronger at four in the afternoon than at ten in the morning, and stronger in summer than in winter. A level that seemed reasonable upstairs at opening is a different level by mid-afternoon. So the correct sequence is deliberately slow. Specify the ground floor properly first: one unit, correctly placed in moving air but away from where anybody stands, running continuously at a low setting. Live with it for a week. Then walk in from the street with a nose that has not been in the building, go straight upstairs at the busiest hour, and read the first three or four seconds on arriving on the upper floor. Very often the honest finding is that the upper floor needs very little or nothing at all, and that anything installed there should be a small unit at a low setting or reeds rather than a second machine matching the first. This is worth doing before buying, not after, because the second machine is the expensive half of a two-floor specification and is frequently unnecessary. There is one clear exception, and it is decided by a door rather than by the floors. If the staircase is enclosed - a fire door at the top or bottom, a shutter closed during trading, a lobby with doors at both ends - then the current is interrupted and the two floors are separate zones, because a machine distributes through connected moving air and cannot cross a closed door. In that case the upper floor needs its own provision, sized for the upper floor alone. The same applies to any room on either floor that has a door: a consultation cabin upstairs is its own zone regardless of what is happening in the stairwell. Walk the building closing every door behind you and the plan becomes obvious. A few more physical points specific to two-floor jewellery showrooms. Mezzanines and voids behave like open stairs, only more so, and a double-height section with a gallery above it will deliver the ground floor's air to the gallery continuously. Where the upper floor is used for bridal or high-value consultation - a common arrangement, since it is quieter - the case for keeping the level low up there is even stronger, because those rooms hold people for long periods and intensity should be set inversely to exposure time. Where the upper floor is used for offices or accounts, it gets a low level or nothing, and staff areas and store rooms get nothing at all. And the stairwell itself needs no provision of its own; it is a conduit rather than a destination, and nobody spends time in it. On hardware, the Megh at Rs 3,499 with its 6L tank suits a substantial ground floor, and the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 - waterless with no tank, coverage up to 1,000 square metres or roughly 10,700 square feet, with Bluetooth app and timer control - suits a large open one, its scheduling control being genuinely useful in a two-floor building where the balance shifts through the day. Upstairs, where something is needed, the Sukoon at Rs 1,799 or the Boond at Rs 799 is usually sufficient, and reeds at Rs 749 to Rs 849 are frequently the right answer for an upper floor that is already receiving air from below - they hold a low continuous level with nothing to schedule, last three to four months from a bottle, and take refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, and never reed oil, which can damage them. Use one register across both floors and vary only the level, because customers move between the floors repeatedly and a change of register at a stair head reads as a discontinuity. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, is the safe whole-building answer; White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, is the softest and suits upper-floor consultation rooms; Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, suits timber-led stores; Old-World Glamour, with amber, violet and woods, belongs on a warm gold-led ground floor and is a poor choice upstairs, since richness accumulates in exactly the place where air is already accumulating; Warm Welcome, with citrus, floral and sandalwood, is an entrance register for the ground floor door; Tea Garden, with jasmine, green tea and white tea, is a soft green-floral; and Lobby Bar, with citrus, pepper and amber, is characterful and suits circulation. Set the level by walking in fresh at the busiest hour rather than by asking anybody who works there, since everybody adapts within about an hour, and lower it in humid months because humid air carries fragrance more slowly and clears it less. Name one person and one day for filling and checking, because in a two-floor store the upstairs unit is the one that gets forgotten. Fix the sources first and check both floors: the pantry is never scented at any time, since cooking smell is aerosolised oil and extraction is the answer - and note that a ground-floor pantry sends its air upstairs by exactly the same mechanism as everything else, which is why an upstairs that smells of lunch is a ground-floor extraction problem rather than an upstairs fragrance problem. Washrooms need working extracts, and air conditioners unserviced since the fit-out will be smelled. Staff should have a physical off switch and never have to justify using it. We make no claim that fragrance affects mood, comfort, dwell time, purchase behaviour or spend. The seven registers are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, and they are SOSA's own interpretations - we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. The upper floor inherits the lower floor's air
A two-floor showroom is not two similar rooms stacked. It is one system with a strong directional flow, and understanding it saves money and a good deal of discomfort upstairs. Warm air rises, so any building with an open connection between levels has a continuous upward current, and a retail staircase is an efficient chimney: warmer ground-floor air, from a space with a street door opening all day, lights on and people in it, moves upward and is replaced by cooler air drawn in at street level. That current runs all day and carries whatever the ground floor's air contains. Two consequences follow, both opposite to what stores assume. The upper floor in a store that specified both floors identically is usually over-scented rather than under-scented, because it receives an ongoing supply from below on top of what is installed there. Stores discover this indirectly - the first floor gets called stuffy, the staff who work upstairs are the ones who complain, or a customer remarks on the fragrance upstairs but never downstairs - and the instinct is to hunt for a source of staleness when the cause is arithmetic. And the effect strengthens through the day and the year, since the ground floor warms up and display lighting feeds the same rising column, so a level that seemed reasonable at opening is different by mid-afternoon. The correct sequence is deliberately slow: specify the ground floor properly, one unit in moving air away from where anybody stands, running low and continuously; live with it a week; then walk in from the street with a fresh nose, go straight upstairs at the busiest hour and read the first few seconds. Often the honest finding is that upstairs needs very little or nothing, and that anything installed should be small or reeds rather than a matching second machine - worth knowing before buying, since the second machine is the expensive half. The exception is a door: an enclosed stair, a fire door, a shutter or a lobby interrupts the current and makes the floors separate zones, because no machine crosses a closed door. Mezzanines and voids behave like open stairs, only more so. Where the upper floor is used for bridal or high-value consultation, the case for a low level is stronger still. The stairwell itself needs nothing - it is a conduit, not a destination. SOSA Megh Rs 3,499 or SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999 with coverage to 1,000 m² downstairs; SOSA Sukoon Rs 1,799, SOSA Boond Rs 799 or reeds from Rs 749 upstairs where anything is needed. Versailles
Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
