A musty smell in clothes is caused by mildew and bacteria that took hold while the fabric was damp - and it will not simply wash out with a normal cycle. But it is very fixable. With a hot re-wash, a natural deodorising rinse and proper drying, you can get musty clothes genuinely fresh again, and then keep them that way. Here is the step-by-step.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I remove a musty smell from clothes? Re-wash on the hottest cycle the fabric allows, adding a cup of white vinegar to the rinse (or a laundry sanitiser) to kill the mildew and bacteria causing the smell. Then dry the clothes quickly and fully, ideally in sunlight or good airflow. Clean the machine too, and store dried clothes with a lightly scented reed (from Rs 749) to keep them fresh.

Does vinegar remove musty smell from clothes? Yes - a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle helps neutralise the mildew and bacteria that cause a musty smell, and it also cuts detergent residue. Follow with a hot wash if the fabric allows, and dry the clothes fully. Vinegar is a cheap, effective natural deodoriser for laundry.

Why do my clothes smell musty even after washing them again? Because a normal cycle does not kill the mildew - you need a hot wash plus a deodorising rinse (white vinegar or a sanitiser), and crucially the clothes must be dried quickly and fully afterwards. If they dry slowly again, the smell returns. A clean machine and prompt, full drying are essential.
The short answer
Short answer: re-wash hot with a cup of white vinegar in the rinse to kill the mildew, then dry quickly and fully (sunlight is ideal). Clean the machine, and store dried clothes with a lightly scented reed (from Rs 749).
The pick: a SOSA reed diffuser (from ₹749) for a low-maintenance fresh room, or a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) for a stronger throw.

A fresh-smelling laundry room is not about masking odour - it is about a clean base (dry air, a clean machine) plus a continuous, gentle fragrance. A reed diffuser or a water-based mist diffuser does the second part quietly, all day.
Straight answer
How do I remove a musty smell from clothes, step by step?
A musty smell is mildew and bacteria that took hold in damp fabric - it needs more than a normal wash. Here is the step-by-step fix. 1. Re-wash hot. Run the clothes again on the hottest cycle the fabric allows - heat kills the microbes causing the smell. 2. Add a deodorising rinse. Put a cup of white vinegar in the rinse (or use a laundry sanitiser). Vinegar neutralises mildew and strips the detergent residue that traps odour. Do not mix vinegar with bleach. 3. Dry quickly and fully. This is the step people skip. Dry in sunlight if you can - UV is a natural deodoriser - or in strong airflow. Slow drying just lets the smell return. 4. Clean the machine. If clothes keep coming out musty, the machine is reinfecting them - run a hot empty maintenance wash and leave the door open to dry. 5. For stubborn cases, a pre-soak in oxygen-based laundry booster before the hot wash helps. Once the clothes are fresh, keep them that way: store them in a cupboard with a lightly scented reed diffuser (₹799) or the calming Evening Calm reed, so they smell lovely and stay dry-fresh, not musty. And keep the laundry room itself fresh with a Morning Freshness reed (₹749). Alcohol-free, made in India, with a portion of every order supporting girl-child education.
One line: re-wash hot with a cup of white vinegar in the rinse, dry quickly and fully (sunlight is best), clean the machine, then store fresh clothes with a lightly scented reed. From Rs 749.
A great place to start for a fresh laundry room is Morning Freshness - a lemon, mint and eucalyptus reed that smells clean and laundered, at ₹749, no plug and no flame. Want a stronger throw? Add a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection from ₹299.

How to remove a musty smell from clothes

A musty smell will not wash out on a normal cycle - it needs heat, a deodoriser, and proper drying. Here is the method.

1
Hot wash plus a deodorising rinse
Kill the mildew, not just mask it
A normal cycle does not remove musty smell because it does not kill the mildew and bacteria. Re-wash on the hottest cycle the fabric allows, and add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse (never mixed with bleach) to neutralise the microbes and strip odour-trapping residue. For stubborn items, pre-soak in an oxygen laundry booster first. This is what actually removes the smell, rather than covering it.
Tip: re-wash hot and add white vinegar to the rinse - it kills the mildew a normal cycle leaves behind.
2
Dry quickly and fully
Sunlight is a natural deodoriser
The step people skip is drying properly. If clothes dry slowly again, the mildew simply comes back. Dry them quickly and fully - in sunlight if possible, because UV is a natural deodoriser and disinfectant, or in strong airflow with a fan. Do not fold or store anything until it is bone dry. Fast, complete drying is what makes the freshness last rather than being a brief reprieve.
3
Clean the machine too
So it stops reinfecting clothes
If clothes keep coming out musty however you wash them, the machine is the source - a biofilm inside the drum and seal is reinfecting every load. Run a hot empty maintenance wash, wipe the seal and drawer, and leave the door open to dry between washes. Otherwise you are fighting a losing battle. A clean, dry machine stops the cycle, and keeps future laundry fresh from the start.
Tip: clean the machine so it stops reinfecting clothes - a musty drum re-spoils every load.
The SOSA principle
Musty means mildew, and mildew needs heat, a deodoriser and proper drying to remove - a normal wash simply is not enough.
Re-wash hot with a vinegar rinse, dry quickly and fully in sunlight or airflow, and clean the machine so it stops reinfecting. Then store fresh clothes with a lightly scented reed to keep them smelling lovely, not musty. From Rs 749.

Musty is mildew - so you have to remove it, not cover it. Heat, vinegar and sunlight do the work; scent keeps it lovely afterwards.

A note from Sonal

People think they want a laundry room that smells nice. What they actually want is fresh clothes, fresh towels and fresh sheets - with no damp note, no musty smell, no cheap chemical cover-up. Those are two different things, and the order matters.

First fix the base: a clean machine, dry air, clothes that are dried properly and not left sitting damp. Then, and only then, add a continuous, gentle fragrance so the room and the linen smell beautiful all the time. A reed diffuser does this with no flame and no plug; a water-based mist diffuser with our Hotel Collection does it with a stronger, hotel-grade throw when you want one.

One honest note: fragrance is the finishing touch, not a cure for damp. If clothes smell musty, air and dry them properly first - the scent is there to keep a clean room smelling lovely, not to hide a problem. Made in small batches in India; a part of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Then dry the clothes quickly and fully, ideally in sunlight or good airflow. Clean the machine too, and store dried clothes with a lightly scented reed (from Rs 749) to keep them fresh.

A clean machine and prompt, full drying are essential to make it last.
Does drying clothes in the sun remove smell?
Yes - sunlight is a natural deodoriser and mild disinfectant, so drying musty clothes in direct sun helps remove the smell and stops it returning. If sun isn't available, dry them quickly in strong airflow with a fan instead. The key is fast, full drying; slow drying is what let the musty smell form in the first place.
How do I keep clothes from smelling musty in storage?
Make sure they are completely dry before storing, keep the cupboard ventilated and not overpacked, and add a lightly scented reed diffuser to keep the space fresh. A little airflow and a gentle continuous fragrance stop stored clothes and linens picking up a stale, musty note between uses.

Facts verified July 2026: A musty or damp smell in laundry or a laundry room is usually caused by moisture - clothes left damp, poor ventilation, or a washing machine that needs cleaning - and is best solved by drying and airing properly and cleaning the machine, before any fragrance is added. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free fragrance oil with natural reeds (no flame, no electricity, no water), in 50ml and 130ml with refills, lasting roughly 6-10 weeks; from ₹749. SOSA ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - Boond (300ml, ₹799), Sukoon (500ml, ₹1,799) and Megh (6L, ₹3,499) - use a water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299, sold separately); this is not reed diffuser oil. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air machine with Bluetooth app and timer, around 1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Cruelty-free, vegan, made in India. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live collection pages.
