Where to land: ₹749 if you want the least you can spend and still change the category, ₹799 if a particular character suits the household better. Above ₹849 nothing happens at all until ₹1,249, which is outside this band.
The step itself: below it a gift is measured in hours and needs somebody to light it. Above it a gift is measured in weeks and needs nobody — a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds that wick it into the room, no flame, no electricity, no switch.
The line inside the band: free delivery starts at ₹499, which falls between the ₹474 rung and the ₹569 one — so on the cheapest rungs the price on the page is not the price you pay.
2. Below the step, more money buys a different object, not a different experience. A ₹379 jar candle, a ₹449 Sandalwood jar, ₹474 mugs, ₹569 ribbed mugs, a ₹664 ceramic dish — nearly three hundred rupees of ladder, and the household's week is unchanged at every rung of it.
3. Above the step, more money buys a character, not a tier. All five reed diffusers sit between ₹749 and ₹849 with the same glass, the same six fibre reeds and the same 6–8 weeks. The fifty or hundred rupees is the cost of the materials in the composition and nothing else.
4. Nothing at all happens between ₹849 and ₹1,249. If your ceiling is around a thousand rupees, the honest advice is that you cannot use the last hundred and fifty of it. Keep it, or add it to a gift for someone else.
5. Free delivery starts at ₹499, and the line falls inside this band. It sits between the ₹474 rung and the ₹569 one — so the two cheapest rungs cost more than they say, and the gap between a ₹474 gift and a ₹749 one is narrower than the labels suggest.
6. Land on ₹749 or ₹799 unless you have a reason not to. Morning Freshness ₹749 for a kitchen-and-bathroom sort of flat, Garden Bloom ₹799 for a home you have never been inside, Evening Calm ₹799 for a small flat and a cautious recipient.
7. Stay below the step deliberately when the household lights candles. That is a real household with real habits, and for them ₹664 of wax is used properly where a diffuser would be the duplicate. The curve is a map, not an instruction.

Part one — two flat stretches and one live step
Budgets are usually described as ceilings, which encourages people to spend up to them. A more useful description is a curve: as the number rises, the gift improves in jumps rather than smoothly, and between the jumps there are long stretches where the money is doing very little. This band contains one jump and two stretches, and the stretches are longer than the jump by a considerable margin. Here they are in order.
Evening Calm₹799 · 50mlThis is the only place in the entire band where the money is genuinely working. Below the step, a gift is hours long and conditional on somebody's attention; above it, a gift is weeks long and conditional on nothing. A 50ml reed diffuser runs continuously from the moment it is stood on a surface, for six to eight weeks, and asks for one thing — turning six reeds over once a week, with gloves, on a tray. In a flat where half the boxes are still taped shut, the difference between "works if lit" and "already working" is not a refinement. It is the difference between a gift that is enjoyed and a gift that is put in a cupboard until things settle down. This single rung is worth a page of its own, and it has one; what matters here is that it is the only rung of its kind between five hundred and a thousand rupees.Part two — the band, rung by rung
The same curve as a table, with the flat stretches and the live step marked. The third column is the one to read: it asks what changed compared with the rung immediately below, which is a much harder test than asking what the object is.
| Rung | What it is | What changed from the rung below | Live step or flat stretch |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹749 ★ | Morning Freshness 50ml — glass, oil, six fibre reeds | Everything. Hours become 6–8 weeks; attention becomes none | THE LIVE STEP — the only one in the band |
| ₹379 | Bookshop or Misty Mornings jar candle, 15–18 hrs | The floor of the band — and below the free-shipping line | Flat stretch begins |
| ₹449 | Sandalwood jar candle, 15–18 hrs | A warmer, denser scent. Same hours, same conditions | Flat |
| ₹474 | Everyday mug or wax melts | Permanent instead of consumable — but the melts need a burner | Flat, and the last rung under ₹499 |
| ₹569 | Ribbed or face ceramic mug; taper candle set | A better-made version of a ₹474 object. Free shipping now clears | Flat |
| ₹664 | Cloud trinket dish, or the candle duo two-pack, 30–36 hrs | Roughly double the burn hours, or a real ceramic piece | Top of the flat stretch |
| ₹799 | Garden Bloom or Evening Calm 50ml | A floral or a soft lavender. Same glass, reeds and weeks | Flat stretch two begins |
| ₹849 | Mountain Breeze or Fresh Brew 50ml | Dearer materials and more presence in a room. Nothing else | Top of the band — nothing above until ₹1,249 |
| The honest caveat: a flat stretch is not a bad stretch. The ₹664 candle duo is a lovely present for a household that lights candles, and the ₹474 mug is a genuinely good mug. What the table says is only that walking up a flat stretch does not change what the recipient's week looks like — so if your budget lands mid-stretch, buy the bottom of it and keep the difference, and if it lands near the step, step. | |||

Part three — when the curve gives the wrong advice
A curve is an average, and averages are wrong about particular households. The clearest case is the home that lights candles. For those people the flat stretch is not flat at all — every rupee spent on wax is spent on something they will deliberately use, and the ₹664 duo genuinely beats a bottle that runs whether or not anyone is home. You can usually tell from their old flat: a lighter left out, wax in a saucer, a jar with a blackened wick. If you saw that, ignore the step entirely. The second case is the household that has said, in words, that it does not want scented things. A reed diffuser is unusually hard to receive politely, because it works continuously and cannot be quietly shelved the way an unlit candle can, and no amount of curve analysis makes it the right present. The trinket dish at ₹664 or a pair of mugs at ₹474 is the honest answer there.
The third case runs the other way, and it is the one worth thinking hardest about. If the recipients are a couple taking their first place together, this whole band may be the wrong band. The next real step above it is not ₹1,249 for a bigger bottle — that buys duration, 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8, at the same presence in a room — but ₹1,498 for a two-bottle duo, which covers two rooms with one purchase and is a different shape of gift entirely. I would rather you waited a fortnight and bought that than spent the top of this band on something that will look modest against the occasion. And I will describe a duo as exactly what it is: two bottles in one purchase. SOSA sells no gift box, no hamper, no gift card and no curated set, and stretching the language there would be a small dishonesty that this cluster does not need.
One last thing about the bottom of the band, since it changes the arithmetic in a way people rarely notice. Free delivery begins at ₹499, and that line falls between the ₹474 rung and the ₹569 one. Which means the two cheapest options here cost more than their labels — the printed price is not the delivered price — while everything from ₹569 upward is exactly what it says. That is a small point, but it makes the ₹474 rung meaningfully worse value than it looks, and it makes the real distance between a cheap gift and a ₹749 one smaller than most people assume when they are deciding how much to spend.
Part four — where to land, given what you actually have
Six real budgets rather than six products. In four of the six the recommendation is to spend less than the ceiling, which is not modesty — it is what the curve says.
| What you have to spend | Where I would land | Price | Why not spend the rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| About a thousand rupees ★ | Garden Bloom or Evening Calm 50ml | ₹799 | Nothing exists between ₹849 and ₹1,249. The last two hundred rupees have nowhere to go |
| About eight hundred and fifty | Mountain Breeze, if the flat is large or they dislike floral | ₹849 | You are at the top of the band; the fifty rupees bought a character, not a tier |
| About eight hundred | Morning Freshness, and keep the difference | ₹749 | Fifty rupees moves you sideways to a floral. Only spend it if the floral suits them better |
| About seven hundred | Step over the line — Morning Freshness 50ml | ₹749 | Staying at ₹664 saves eighty-five rupees and gives up the only live step in the band |
| About six hundred, and firm | The candle duo two-pack, or the cloud trinket dish | ₹664 | You are at the top of a flat stretch, which is the right place to be if you cannot cross |
| About five hundred | Sandalwood jar candle — one good object, not two adequate ones | ₹449 | ₹474 and ₹569 buy a different object, not a different gift. Save it or add it to the next present |
Versailles
I did not set out to build a range with a gap in it. The gap exists because of a decision I made early and have never regretted: no reed diffuser leaves this workshop with less than fifty millilitres in it. Below that volume the reeds barely finish saturating before the bottle is done, the buyer gets a fortnight, and the conclusion they draw is that reed diffusers do not work. So the ladder jumps from a ₹664 pair of candles to a ₹749 bottle with nothing in between, and that jump is the honest shape of what we make rather than a pricing strategy.
What surprised me was how useful people found it to be told where the flat parts are. We get messages fairly often from someone who came in meaning to spend a thousand rupees and left having spent ₹749 — and, more often than not, they come back. Telling a customer that the last two hundred rupees of their budget cannot be usefully spent costs us a little on the day and appears to be worth a great deal afterwards.
I will not tell you that the ₹749 bottle will be their favourite gift or that anyone will remember who brought it. I have no way of knowing, and neither does anyone else writing lists like this. What I can tell you is the mechanism and the arithmetic: fifty millilitres of oil, six fibre reeds, six to eight weeks, nothing to switch on, and one point in this entire band where spending more changes what you are giving.
