Why does a sister choose better? Because visitors are shown a tidied flat and a composed face. A sister arrives without ceremony and sees the real version, so she can buy against the actual problem.
What if she says she needs nothing? She is answering the visitor's question. Buy for what you saw rather than what she said - and give it at six weeks, when everybody else has stopped.
You see the version nobody else is shown
Every household receiving visitors after a birth runs a small production. Twenty minutes before anybody arrives, the worst of the mess is moved into a bedroom, a surface is cleared, somebody changes their shirt, and the baby is arranged to be presentable. Then the visitor sits down, is told that things are going well, is shown the baby, and leaves with an entirely reasonable impression that this household is coping nicely. Nobody is lying. It is simply what people do, and it is largely automatic. A sister is on the other side of that production. You arrive without notice, or with ten minutes' notice, and you see the afternoon as it actually is: which arm is permanently occupied, which room she ends up in by default, what has not been done in four days, what she has stopped bothering with, and what she is quietly finding hard. You also hear the unedited version of the answer to how are you, which is usually different from the one the neighbour got. That information is the most valuable thing any giver in this story has, and almost nobody uses it, because sisters tend to buy from the same generic list as everybody else. So the instruction for this gift is unusually simple: do not choose from a category, choose from what you saw. Four things are commonly what you saw, and each has a clear answer. If what you saw was her hands - one arm occupied more or less permanently, everything being done single-handed, things being put down and not picked up again - then the answer is a solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to five hundred and forty-nine rupees. Fifteen grams of alcohol-free balm in a flat compact: opened with one thumb, applied with a finger, no cap to unscrew and drop, nothing to spill into a bag, no glass to knock over on a shelf at two in the morning, and the whole interaction takes four seconds and can be done while holding a baby. Velour is vanilla bean, butter biscuit, toasted almond and whipped cream at four hundred and seventy-nine. Sterling is coconut milk, almond nougat, white amber and powdered musk at four hundred and sixty-nine. Sway is dark cherry, espresso, cocoa, red patchouli and vanilla husk at four hundred and fifty-nine. Siren is black cherry, espresso, warm vanilla and cedar smoke at four hundred and eighty-nine. If what you saw was the evenings - the flat going flat at eight o'clock, both of them in a room that has become functional rather than pleasant - then the answer is a coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees, which takes one action and then works unattended. Lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours, in Misty Mornings with Nilgiri orchid and sun-ripened nectarine, Bookshop with cedarwood, sage and lemon, Evening Walks with frankincense and tonka, or Cozy Corner with spiced pear and golden honey. If it is clear that nobody in that house has a spare minute even for one action, a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees is the right version: set once, then two or three months on its own, alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action. Entrance or living room, not a nursery - SOSA makes no products for babies or children, and nothing in this range is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a baby's belongings. Wax melts at four hundred and seventy-four rupees are the flame-free option if the household would rather not have a flame around a small child, with a ceramic burner at five hundred and sixty-nine. If what you saw was the driving - him out at odd hours, her doing the appointments, the car being used for everything including getting a baby to sleep - then a hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to five hundred and nine rupees is the gift almost nobody gives and the one that fits that household best. Jasmine is four hundred and forty-nine, Lavender and Sandalwood four hundred and seventy-nine, Icy Mint four hundred and eighty-nine, Lemon four hundred and ninety-nine. It also belongs to whoever drives, which means it quietly includes your brother-in-law, who has almost certainly received nothing from anybody. And if what you saw was simply that nothing in that house is hers - that every object arriving for six months has been addressed to somebody else - then give her something personal, which you are better placed to choose than anybody except her husband. An alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a 12ml glass roll-on of undiluted perfume oil with no alcohol carrier, applied by rolling it on, with no setup and no spray. It opens quietly and stays within an arm's length rather than filling a room, which many people find is what they want around a small baby - as a matter of comfort and preference, nothing more. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk; Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood; Mastani is night jasmine and Damask rose; Nawaab is a white oud composition with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate. One thing even a sister should allow for: preferences that shifted during the pregnancy do not always shift straight back, so if you are not certain, the Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five rupees gives her three and lets her choose. Nothing on this page is health, medical or safety advice, no product is described as safe or unsafe around anybody in particular, and alcohol-free is a formulation fact rather than a safety claim. Two things that only work if you are the sister. First, ignore the answer to what do you need. That question gets the visitor's response - nothing, we're fine, don't bring anything - because it is asked in the register of politeness and answered in the same register. You are not obliged to take it at face value, and you have the evidence to overrule it. Second, use the timing that nobody else uses. Everything arrives in one wave and stops at about six weeks: the visitors thin out, the messages taper, and she is alone with a routine that has not settled. Almost every gift she receives will land in the first fortnight, when she has the least attention available for any of it. A gift from you at six or eight weeks arrives into an empty field and gets the attention it deserves. It also tells her, without a word being said, that somebody is still thinking about it after everybody else moved on - which is the part she will remember long after she has forgotten what the object was.

Versailles
When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.
That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.
One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
