This is the straight answer to the question people actually type: does one of these things work if the AC is on all day, or is the money wasted. The answer is yes, and in some ways it works better in a cooled house than a ventilated one - but only if four things are true. Here they are, in order, with the settings to start from and an honest list of what the machine will not do.
Quick answers — read this first
Can a scent machine work effectively in an air-conditioned home? Yes, and often better than in a naturally ventilated one, on four conditions. Do the ventilation and AC servicing first, because fragrance adds and never removes. Size it by air volume rather than room count, at about 1000m³ per machine, which one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft. Place it on the return-air path, about two metres from the indoor unit and out of the direct throw, never underneath it and never head-on into the cold draught. And run it low and continuously on timers rather than high and in bursts, because cold air makes a scent read lighter and the instinct to turn it up is the main way these homes go wrong.

Does air conditioning stop a diffuser working? No, but it changes what works. Cold air slows evaporation, so a fragrance reads lighter and shorter, and the cold stream scatters anything delivered as a burst. That is why a room spray feels like it vanishes in a cooled flat. The same recirculation, though, is an advantage for a continuous low output placed on the return path, because the loop distributes the fragrance evenly around the whole volume for you. Choose a machine with adjustable intensity and timers, put it on the air path, and run it quietly for hours rather than loudly for minutes.

What settings should a diffuser use in an air-conditioned room? Low intensity, long runs, scheduled. Set a morning window and an early-evening window on the app rather than running at full intensity all day, and give it 30 to 45 minutes before guests arrive so the fragrance has settled instead of just being switched on. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) takes 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers with adjustable intensity for exactly this. If the room reads flat, lengthen the run before you raise the intensity, because you adapt to a scent within a minute or two and your guests do not.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, and often better than in a naturally ventilated house - on four conditions. Ventilate daily and clean the AC filters and coil first, because fragrance adds and never removes. Size it by air volume at about 1000m³ per machine. Place it on the return-air path, two metres from the indoor unit and out of the direct throw, never underneath it and never head-on into the cold draught. And run it low and continuously on timers rather than high and in bursts, because turning it up is how these homes go wrong.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) run at a low intensity on scheduled windows - waterless, 1000m³ or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, under 38dB, 5W, with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and a 400ml tank lasting up to about 75 days.
Next step: tell us your floor size, where the indoor units sit and how many hours you cool for, and we will give you a position and a starting setting - ask us what fits your home.
Four conditions for a scent machine to work in a cooled home1. Ventilate daily and clean the AC filters and coil first, or none of it works2. Size it by air volume - 1000m³ per machine, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft3. Place it on the return path, never under the unit or in the cold draught4. Run it low and continuously, on timers, rather than high and in burstsThen it works well - because recirculating air distributes it for you
Recirculating air is the reason people think fragrance fails in a cooled house, and it is also the reason it works so well once the delivery is right. A burst gets scattered. A low continuous output on the return path gets carried evenly around the whole volume.

Straight answer
Will a scent machine actually work with the air conditioning running?
Yes, on four conditions, and the fourth is the one that trips most people. First, do the air and the servicing. A split AC recirculates and brings in no fresh air, so open the house on two opposite sides for about twenty minutes a day, wash the indoor unit filters every two to four weeks, and have the coil, blower and drain pan cleaned once a year. A machine bought before those three things is money spent on the wrong problem, because a scent machine adds fragrance molecules alongside whatever is already in the air and does not remove, neutralise or capture any of it. Second, size it by air volume. Multiply length by width by height for each connected space and divide by 1000m³, which is what one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft. Most flats and most floors are one machine, not four. Third, place it on the return-air path, about two metres from the indoor unit and out of the direct throw of the louvres, never directly underneath it, never head-on into the cold stream, and never in a corner or behind a curtain. This is where recirculation stops being your enemy and becomes your distribution system: a low continuous output on the return path gets carried evenly around the whole volume, which is something a naturally ventilated house cannot do for you. Fourth, run it low and long. Cold air makes a fragrance read lighter, and the instinct that follows - reaching for the intensity dial - is the main way these homes go wrong, because you adapt to a scent within a minute or two of being in the room and everybody arriving from outside does not. Set a morning window and an early-evening one on the app, use a low or medium intensity, and give it 30 to 45 minutes before guests arrive so it reads as the smell of the house rather than something just switched on. Do those four and it works genuinely well. One line worth being plain about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier. It does not filter, disinfect, dehumidify or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind. A free home scenting plan will give you a position and a setting, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Yes - if you ventilate and service first, size it at 1000m³ per machine, put it on the return path rather than under the unit, and run it low and continuously instead of high and bursty.
The configuration that works: a SOSA Vaayu on the return-air path, low intensity, two scheduled windows a day. 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), under 38dB, 5W, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, waterless so nothing is added to a house you are cooling.

The three conditions that decide whether it works

Three conditions decide whether the machine works. Get all three right and a cooled house is genuinely one of the easiest places to hold a consistent scent. Get one wrong and you will conclude, incorrectly, that the machine is weak.

1
Size
One machine per 1000m³ of connected air, not one per room
The commonest reason a machine underdelivers is that it was bought for the wrong volume, and the commonest reason people over-buy is that they counted rooms. Measure instead. Multiply length by width by height for every space that is genuinely connected - open to each other, on the same cooling, doors normally open - and divide the total by 1000 cubic metres. Most Indian flats come out at one machine. A large connected floor with high ceilings might come out at two. If a single volume comes out well above that, it is a bigger-machine conversation rather than a more-machines one, because several small units running independently never hold the same level as one properly sized machine on the air path. And do not size by intensity: buying a small machine and running it at maximum to cover a large floor gives you a strong smell near the machine and nothing at the far end, plus a tank that empties in three weeks.
Tip: measure the height too - a double-height room holds twice the air the floor plan suggests.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu is rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, which covers most Indian flats and floors from one point.

2
Position
The return-air path, not the console under the indoor unit
In an air-conditioned room the air is on a loop all day, and the loop is either your distribution system or the thing scattering your fragrance, depending entirely on where you deliver into it. The return path - the half of the circuit where air is travelling back towards the indoor unit - is where you want the machine, about two metres from the unit and out of the direct throw of the louvres. Placed there, a low continuous output is picked up and carried evenly around the entire volume. Placed directly under the indoor unit, it sits in the coldest and driest air in the room, under something that can drip condensate, at the wrong end of the loop. Placed head-on in the cold stream, the fine plume is scattered and dumped against the far wall within seconds. Placed in a corner or behind a curtain, it sits in dead air and appears weak, which is how people end up turning it up. Hold a tissue up while the unit runs if you are not sure which way the air is going.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu can be freestanding, wall mounted above eye level or HVAC mounted, so it can reach the air path in almost any room.

3
Setting
Low and continuous beats high and occasional, every time
Cold air makes a fragrance read lighter, which pushes almost everybody towards the same error: raising the intensity, then raising it again an hour later. The problem is that you adapt within a minute or two of being in the room and stop registering it, while everyone arriving from outside walks into far more scent than you intended, and a heavy fragrance in a cold sealed room turns cloying quickly. So start low. Set a morning window and an early-evening window rather than running all day, use a low or medium intensity, and if the room reads flat, lengthen the run before you touch the intensity. Before guests, start it 30 to 45 minutes ahead on a medium setting so the fragrance has diffused and settled by the time the bell goes, which reads as the smell of a well-kept house rather than a prepared one. This also happens to be the cheapest way to run it: two short low windows a day use far less oil than one strong burst.
Tip: if it reads flat, lengthen the run before you raise the intensity.
SOSA Vaayu
1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity are what make low-and-long practical on the Vaayu.

The SOSA principle
A scent machine does not fail in an air-conditioned home. It fails when it is put under the indoor unit and turned up to compensate, which are the two most natural things in the world to do.
Both instincts are wrong, and correcting them costs nothing.
SOSA Vaayu
The machine, if the conditions are met: SOSA Vaayu on the return-air path, low intensity, scheduled - waterless, 1000m³, under 38dB, 5W. ₹11,999.

What it will do, and what it will not

Here is the honest scorecard: what a machine does well in a cooled house, what it does badly, and what it does not do at all.

The SOSA plan
What it will do, and what it will not
What you are actually dealing with What fixes it
SOSA VaayuHold one consistent character across a connected floor
It does this better in a cooled house than a ventilated one, because the recirculating air distributes a low continuous output evenly. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³ from a point on the return path. View →
SOSA VaayuRun unattended, quietly, and cost very little
Under 38dB and 5W, which is about 1.5 units a month on a ten-hour schedule. The 400ml tank of pure oil lasts up to about 75 days, so roughly five fills a year, with no water to descale. View →
Cover a stale house, a dirty coil or a sour drain pan
It will not. Fragrance adds molecules alongside the ones already there, so you get both at once. Ventilate daily, wash the filters, and have the coil and drain pan cleaned before you scent anything.
Purify, disinfect, dehumidify or improve air quality
It does none of these and makes no health claim. It is a fragrance machine. A HEPA filter captures particles and an activated carbon filter partially reduces odour; a diffuser does neither.

If you want the physics that explains why these four conditions exist, how air conditioning affects home fragrance covers temperature, humidity and airflow properly. If the position question is the one you actually have, where to place a scent machine in an air-conditioned room goes through the return path, the distances and the mounting options in detail. And the broader question is answered in why your house doesn't smell fresh even after cleaning. On fragrance choice, cold air has an opinion: On the fragrance itself, a cold house is a specific brief. Cold air flattens a composition and shortens its opening, so the profiles that survive are the ones with structure rather than sparkle: white tea and green tea, cedar, vetiver and light woods, fig, soft citrus, clean musks, a dry mineral note. Those read as air, space and order, which is precisely what a recirculating house is short of. What fails is anything sweet and gourmand - vanilla, caramel, cocoa, heavy amber. In a cold, closed room sweetness does not lift, it settles, and it goes cloying by the second hour. Big ouds and very heavy florals are beautiful compositions in the wrong volume of air. And use one fragrance across the connected floor rather than a different one in every room, because in a house where the air is constantly recirculating, three scents do not stay in three rooms.

SOSA Vaayu
What it will not do: It adds fragrance and does not remove odour, and it is not an air purifier. Ventilation and servicing come first. SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999.
Four conditions, and then it works well
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 - waterless, 1000m³ or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, under 38dB, 5W, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity.
See the SOSA Vaayu Book a scenting plan
The machine is almost never the reason it did not work. It is usually a console under the air conditioner and a dial turned to maximum.

The verdict in one line: yes, if you ventilate and service first, size by volume, place it on the return path and run it low. A scent machine does not remove odour molecules. It adds fragrance molecules alongside them. Nothing about diffusing a fragrance breaks down, neutralises, captures or cancels what is already in the air, and any brand telling you otherwise is overselling a fragrance product. Run a diffuser in a house that has had no fresh air for a fortnight and a coil that has not been cleaned in two years, and you get both at once, which is genuinely worse than either alone. One line worth being plain about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier. A note from Sonal

I get asked this in a slightly defensive way, usually by somebody who has already been sold something that disappointed them in a cold room. The honest answer is that an air-conditioned home is one of the easiest places in the world to hold a consistent fragrance, and one of the easiest to get wrong, and the difference between those two outcomes is about a metre and a half of placement and one setting on a dial.

What I tell people to do is unglamorous. Find the half of the room where the air is coming back towards the unit, put the Vaayu there, two metres out, out of the throw. Set two short windows a day at a low intensity. Then leave it alone for a fortnight before you judge it, because you will adapt to it and the only reliable opinion is somebody walking in from outside. Nine times out of ten they say the house smells lovely and nobody can name the scent, which is exactly the result you want.

And the part I will not soften. It does not filter, disinfect, dehumidify or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind. Frequently asked questions

Can a scent machine work effectively in an air-conditioned home?
Yes, and often better than in a naturally ventilated one, on four conditions. Ventilate daily and clean the AC filters and coil first, because fragrance adds and never removes. Size it by air volume rather than room count, at about 1000 cubic metres per machine, which is what a SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 covers, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. Place it on the return-air path, about two metres from the indoor unit and out of the direct throw, never underneath it and never in the cold draught. And run it low and continuously on timers rather than high and in bursts.
What settings should I use in a cold room?
Run it low and often rather than high and occasionally. In a cold room a fragrance reads lighter, so the temptation is to raise the intensity, which only means everyone arriving from outside meets far more scent than you can smell yourself. Set a low or medium intensity on scheduled windows using the app - a morning window and an early-evening one suits most homes - and give it 30 to 45 minutes before guests arrive so it has settled rather than just been switched on. The SOSA Vaayu takes 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers with adjustable intensity.
Where exactly should the machine go?
On the return path, where the room's air is actually moving back towards the indoor unit, or near the return grille in a ducted home. That way the circulation redistributes the fragrance around the whole room instead of leaving it in one spot. Never place it directly under the indoor unit, where condensate can drip and the air is coldest and driest, and never where the cold draught hits it head on, because a jet of cold air scatters the plume and dumps it against the far wall. Keep it a couple of metres away and out of the direct throw, with about a foot of clear air around it.
Why does the fragrance read weaker when the AC is on?
It changes how the fragrance behaves rather than stopping it working. Scent reaches you as vapour, and evaporation slows as temperature drops, so a room held at 22 degrees releases less fragrance vapour, more slowly, than the same room at 30. The result is a scent that reads lighter and flatter, with shorter opening notes, sitting lower in the room. Cooling also dries the air, and the unit keeps pushing room air back through its own filter, so anything put into the cold stream is scattered and thinned. The fix is placement on the return path and a lower continuous setting, not a stronger dose.
Will it fix a house that already smells stale?
No. A scent machine adds fragrance, it does not remove odour. Diffusing a fragrance does not break down, neutralise or capture the molecules already in the air, so scenting a house with no air exchange and a dirty evaporator coil gives you both smells at once, which is worse than either on its own. Ventilation, filter cleaning and a proper coil and drain service are what remove the smell. Fragrance is the finish on air that is already clear, and used that way it is genuinely worth having.
