Founder Diaries · Large-Space Scenting · Defining Strong
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
"Strong" is the least useful word in this category, and I say that as someone who has spent years trying to answer questions that contain it. It compresses three separate properties into one syllable — how rich the fragrance is where it leaves the machine, how far it is still perceptible from there, and how long it holds without anyone attending to it — and those three come apart the moment you compare real products. A machine that wins one of them can lose another badly. The most expensive mistakes I see in large-space scenting are people buying for one meaning while wanting a different one, so this page separates the three before it recommends anything.
Quick answers — read this first
Strong meaning density — how much fragrance is in the output itself. Winner: the Vaayu at ₹11,999, because it nebulises undiluted oil rather than fragrance carried in water.

Strong meaning reach — how far from the machine the room still reads as scented. Winner: the Vaayu again, up to 1000m³ or about 2,000–3,000 sq ft. Everything else is a one-room product.

Strong meaning persistence — how long it holds without you touching it. Winner per fill: the Vaayu at 90+ days on a 400ml tank. Among the ultrasonics, the Megh at ₹3,499 with about 100 hours from six litres — this is the one thing it genuinely wins.

The catch: the strongest option is rarely the most pleasant to live with. Intensity settings and timers matter more than maximum output.
The short answer
Short answer: decide which "strong" you mean before you shop. Density is how rich the output is at the source; reach is how far that output is still perceptible; persistence is how long the space stays scented without anyone refilling, flipping or switching anything. A Sukoon at ₹1,899 is respectable on density and short on reach. A Megh at ₹3,499 wins persistence and loses reach outright. Only the Vaayu at ₹11,999 leads on all three at once, which is what you are paying for.
For a genuinely large space, reach is the one that cannot be bought any other way. Density can be improved by dosing correctly; persistence can be improved with a bigger tank or a 130ml bottle. Reach is a property of the mechanism, and no amount of money spent inside a format changes it.
Shop: Vaayu ₹11,999, up to 1000m³, 400ml in the box · Megh ₹3,499 for runtime at about 215 sq ft · Sukoon ₹1,899 for 270–320 sq ft on demand · reed diffusers from ₹749 for constant low background. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
What is the best strong fragrance diffuser for a large space?
1. First split the word. Density is how much fragrance is in the output at the machine. Reach is how far away that output is still doing something. Persistence is how long the space holds without anyone attending to it. Almost every unhappy purchase in this category is a mismatch between the meaning someone wanted and the meaning they bought.

2. If you mean density: the Vaayu at ₹11,999 leads, because it atomises undiluted oil rather than fragrance dissolved in water. Within the ultrasonic format, density is mostly under your control — dose the tank as the fragrance instructs and try a half-fill for a denser, shorter run.

3. If you mean reach: the Vaayu again, and it is not close. Up to 1000m³ — roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft depending on ceiling height — against 270–320 sq ft for a ₹1,899 Sukoon, about 150 sq ft for a ₹899 Boond, and one room for a reed bottle. Reach is the only one of the three you cannot buy your way to inside a format.

4. If you mean persistence: per fill, the Vaayu's 400ml tank runs 90 days or more. Among ultrasonics the Megh at ₹3,499 wins — six litres, about 100 hours — and this is the honest thing it is for. It covers only about 215 sq ft, less than the Sukoon, so it is a persistence product and never a reach one. In the passive range, a 130ml reed bottle holds a steady low background for 14–18 weeks with nothing but a weekly flip.

5. For most large spaces, reach decides. If your connected volume is above about 700 sq ft, no amount of density or persistence rescues a machine that cannot cross the room.

6. The strongest setting is rarely the right setting. The Vaayu has adjustable intensity and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers precisely so you do not run it flat out; a space that announces itself is a worse space than one that simply feels considered.

7. Before spending ₹11,999, know the supply position. The Vaayu ships with 400ml of cold-air oil across four fragrances and SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil. The water-based Hotel Collection is a different product for ultrasonic machines and must not be used in it. Ask SOSA about refill availability first. Machines are made in India, reeds are handmade in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: "strong" is three properties. Density — the Vaayu leads, and within an ultrasonic it is mostly your dosing. Reach — the Vaayu at up to 1000m³, and reach cannot be bought inside a format. Persistence — the Vaayu at 90+ days a fill, or the Megh's ~100 hours among ultrasonics, or a 130ml reed bottle at 14–18 weeks. For a large space, reach is the meaning that decides.

The only machine in the range that leads all three
SOSA Vaayu · waterless cold-air nebuliser ₹11,999
Density, because pressurised air atomises undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist with no water diluting it. Reach, because that is what the undiluted output buys — up to 1000m³, about 2,000–3,000 sq ft depending on ceiling height. Persistence, because a 400ml tank runs 90 days or more per fill at a mid intensity setting. Control comes from a Bluetooth app or the onboard buttons, with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable mist intensity, auto-stop and a key-lock so nobody else changes the settings. Under 38 dB, 5W, 165 × 80.5 × 215 mm, 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall/HVAC mounted, CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Four Hotel Collection cold-air fragrances at 100ml each are supplied in the box; no separate Vaayu refill oil is sold at present.

Part one — the three meanings of strong

Read these three definitions and decide which one describes the disappointment you are trying to fix. It is worth being honest with yourself here, because the three point at different products and at very different amounts of money. A useful shortcut: describe the failure in a sentence that does not contain the word strong. "It smells thin standing next to it" is density. "It is lovely by the console and absent at the dining table" is reach. "It is perfect on Sunday and gone by Wednesday" is persistence. Those three sentences have almost nothing in common except that all three arrive in my inbox as the same question.

1
MEANING ONE · DENSITY
How much fragrance is in the output where it leaves the machine
This is the property people think they are buying when they compare prices, and it is the one most under your own control. In an ultrasonic machine, density is a ratio of fragrance to water in the tank — dose to the guidance on the fragrance you are using rather than rationing a 15ml sampler, and try a half-filled tank for a denser mist over a shorter run. In a reed bottle it is the composition and the reed count: six is the calibrated number, nine is audibly fuller and costs bottle life. In a nebuliser there is no dilution at all, which is why the Vaayu leads this column outright. Test it by standing a metre from the source: if the fragrance reads thin there, you have a density problem and it is often free to fix. If it reads rich there and vanishes across the room, density is fine and you have been shopping for the wrong thing.
The test sentence: "it smells thin even standing next to it." That is density, and in an ultrasonic it is usually the dose.
2
MEANING TWO · REACH
How far from the source the room still reads as scented
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuserSukoon₹1,899 · 270–320 sq ftWalk away from the machine until you stop noticing it, and mark the spot. That distance, doubled across the room, is what every coverage figure on every box is trying to describe. Reach is the meaning that matters most in a large space and the only one you cannot improve by spending more inside the same format. A reed bottle has no propulsion at all — it releases and waits for the room to distribute, so its honest range is one room with gentle traffic through it. An ultrasonic has a small plume and a short throw: Boond about 150 sq ft, Sukoon 270–320 sq ft, and those numbers are honest rather than cautious. A cold-air nebuliser is the only format here rated in cubic metres rather than square feet, at up to 1000m³. Two practical notes: ceiling height eats reach, because coverage is really a volume, and any door you genuinely close removes volume from the problem for free.
The test sentence: "rich by the console, absent at the dining table." That is reach, and only a change of format fixes it.
3
MEANING THREE · PERSISTENCE
How long the space holds without anyone attending to it
The quietest of the three meanings and the one that matters most to anyone running a property rather than living in it. Persistence has two halves — how long a fill or a bottle lasts, and how steady the level is across that period. A Boond runs about six hours a fill; a Sukoon 16–18 hours on low from 500ml; a Megh about 100 hours from six litres, which is the single thing it genuinely wins and the honest reason to buy it; a Vaayu 90 days or more from a 400ml tank. In the passive range a 50ml reed bottle holds 6–8 weeks and a 130ml holds 14–18, at a flatter level than any machine because there is no on and off. Steadiness is the underrated half: a reed diffuser's plateau after the first fortnight is the product, and machines deliver a sawtooth of scented hours and unscented ones unless you schedule them properly.

Part two — every format scored on all three

The whole range in one grid, scored on the three meanings rather than ranked by price. Coverage and runtime figures are manufacturer specifications; the scores are my own working assessment from in-house use, not measurements. Read across your own row rather than down the price column.

The three-strengths matrix
Density, reach and persistence, product by product
Product & price Density of output Reach Persistence without attention Wins when "strong" means…
Vaayu ₹11,999 ★ Highest — undiluted oil, no water in the output Up to 1000m³ · about 2,000–3,000 sq ft 90+ days per 400ml fill, scheduled and lockable All three — which is what ₹11,999 buys
Megh ₹3,499 Water-carried, same ceiling as any ultrasonic ~215 sq ft — the shortest of the machines About 100 hours from 6L — best of the ultrasonics Persistence, and winter humidity. Never reach
Sukoon ₹1,899 Good if dosed properly; yours to control 270–320 sq ft — one normal room 16–18 hrs on low per 500ml fill; timers and remote Density on demand in one room
Boond ₹899 Adequate for its size; small plume ~150 sq ft — a corner, a desk, a bathroom About 6 hours a fill — an evening machine A cheap switch in a small space
Reed 50ml from ₹749 Set by composition and reed count — 9.5 down to 8.9 on our own scale One room, no propulsion at all 6–8 weeks, flat, on a weekly flip Steadiness — a background that never switches off
Reed 130ml from ₹1,249 Identical to the 50ml at the same six reeds Identical to the 50ml — size is not reach 14–18 weeks — the longest unattended run in the range Persistence, cheaply, in one room
The honest caveat: these scores are SOSA's own working assessment from in-house use and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurement, and the coverage and runtime figures behind them are manufacturer specifications that shift with intensity setting, ceiling height, ventilation and season. Reed strength ratings are positions on SOSA's internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil — the 400ml in the box is the supply available today; confirm with SOSA before buying if long-term supply matters. The water-based Hotel Collection is for ultrasonic machines only and never for a Vaayu. Nothing here purifies air, removes odours or affects health.
Shop this guide
One winner per meaning
The SOSA principle
Density and persistence can be bought inside a format. Reach cannot.
Dose better, add reeds, buy a bigger tank — all of that works. But if the fragrance cannot cross the room, only a change of mechanism will make it cross the room.

Part three — when strongest is the wrong purchase

There is a version of this page that simply says "buy the biggest machine" and it would sell more Vaayus than this one will. I am not going to write it, because in a large share of cases the strongest option is genuinely the wrong object. Start with the mismatch, which is the commonest error: people shopping for density when they want persistence. If your complaint is that the room is beautiful on Sunday and empty by Wednesday, a more powerful machine changes nothing — you need a longer unattended run, which might be a ₹3,499 Megh, or a 130ml reed bottle at ₹1,349 holding 14–18 weeks flat, or simply the timer you have not been using. Equally, people shopping for reach when they want density are about to spend ₹11,999 on a problem that a ₹999 bottle of fragrance and a properly dosed tank would have solved.

Then there is the question of what a strong room is actually like to be in. A space that announces itself the moment the door opens is not the same as a space that feels considered, and in a property housing people you have not met — guests, tenants, clients — restraint is the safer setting by a wide margin. Some people are sensitive to fragrance; some arrive with a headache from a flight; nobody has consented to a scented room in advance. This is a matter of comfort and courtesy rather than any claim about health, and it is exactly why the Vaayu has adjustable intensity and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers rather than a single setting. I would rather sell someone a strong machine they run gently than a weak one they run flat out. And whatever the machine, ventilate first and scent second — fragrance is an addition to the air, never a correction to it.

Finally, the honest limits around the strongest thing we sell for a home. Above 1000m³ the Vaayu is out of its range and you are into ducted commercial equipment — Aangan at ₹25,999 for roughly 8,000–10,000 sq ft, Meenar at ₹38,500 for 12,000–18,000 — which needs an HVAC system and a conversation with us rather than a checkout page. Below about 700 sq ft of connected volume, two Sukoons at ₹1,899 each, or one plus a reed bottle at the far end, is very likely the better answer and a fraction of the price. And the Vaayu itself comes with one thing you must know before you spend: it ships with 400ml of cold-air oil across four fragrances, roughly 90 or more days per tank fill, and SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil. The water-based Hotel Collection sold for ultrasonic machines shares scent names but is a different product and must not be used in it. Ask SOSA where refills stand before you commit.

Say what you want without using the word strong. The sentence you end up with names the product.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — buy for the meaning you actually want

The three meanings turned into six purchase decisions, with the check I would want you to run before each one. The checks are there because in half these rows the right outcome is spending nothing at all.

The strength edit
Meaning, purchase, price, and the check first
"Strong" as you mean it What to buy Price The check before you buy
Density · thin at the source ★ A proper dose — 100ml Hotel Collection, or reeds six → nine ₹999, or free Have you ever bought fragrance for the machine, or only used the samplers?
Density · reeds too quiet a character Fresh Brew 9.5 or Mountain Breeze 9.4 ₹849 / 50ml Are you running an 8.9 composition in a room that needs a 9.5?
Reach · under 700 sq ft connected A second Sukoon, or one plus a reed bottle at the far end ₹1,899 · from ₹749 Is there a door you could simply close and halve the volume?
Reach · above 2,000 sq ft connected Vaayu, centrally placed or wall-mounted ₹11,999 Have you asked SOSA about refill availability? 400ml is the supply today
Persistence · tired of refilling a tank Megh, 6L, about 100 hours a fill ₹3,499 Is your room under ~215 sq ft? Above that this is the wrong machine
Persistence · a steady background, no plug A 130ml reed bottle, or an oil-only refill for the one you own From ₹1,249 · refill ₹2,399 Are you flipping all six reeds weekly? Unflipped, nothing else matters
Honest notes for buyers: the three-way scoring on this page is SOSA's own working assessment from in-house use and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurement. Coverage, runtime and capacity figures are manufacturer specifications and vary with intensity setting, ceiling height, ventilation, furnishing and season. Reed strength ratings are positions on SOSA's internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard and not a concentration; replacement reeds are not sold separately and our guidance is to refresh them every few months. The Megh at ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft, less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon, and is a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil; the 400ml supplied in the box is the fragrance available at the time of writing, and buyers needing long-term supply should confirm with SOSA before purchasing. Water-based Hotel Collection goes in ultrasonic machines only, never in a Vaayu; reed oil goes in no machine. Warranty, AMC, installation and bulk terms are not published — ask SOSA. No product here purifies air, removes odours or affects health, mood or sleep.
SOSA Megh 6 litre ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The one column this machine genuinely wins
SOSA Megh · 6L ultrasonic ₹3,499
Persistence. Six litres and about a hundred hours between fills, which turns a daily chore into a weekly one — and in a dry winter room the moisture it adds is something people otherwise buy a separate appliance for. That is the honest case, and it is a good one. What it does not win is reach: its rated coverage is about 215 sq ft, less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon's 270–320. If you arrived at this page from a large open floor, the Megh is not your answer no matter what its price suggests. It takes the water-based Hotel Collection; a 300ml at ₹1,799 suits a tank this size far better than repeat 15ml bottles.

A note from Sonal

We publish a strength number against every reed composition — 9.5 for Fresh Brew down to 8.9 for Evening Calm — and I have been asked more than once why we do not publish one for the machines. The answer is on this page. A single number would have to average three properties that pull in different directions, and the average would be useless to everybody. A six-litre machine that runs for a hundred hours across a small room and a small machine that fills a large one in twenty minutes cannot share a score without lying about one of them.

What I would rather give people is the vocabulary. Density, reach, persistence. Once a customer writes to me using those three words instead of "stronger", the conversation takes about two exchanges instead of ten, and quite often ends with them spending nothing — because the thing they wanted was a timer they had not used, or a proper bottle of fragrance instead of the samplers, or a weekly flip.

The other thing I want on the record is that the strongest machine we make for homes is not the one I run hardest. The Vaayu has intensity control and four timer settings for a reason, and a space that whispers is almost always better company than one that shouts. It ships with 400ml of cold-air oil and we do not currently sell a refill for it — an honest gap, named before the purchase rather than after it, and one to ask us about if long-term supply is part of your decision. The reed range is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, the machines are made in India, and part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the strongest diffuser for a large space?
On all three meanings of the word, the Vaayu at ₹11,999 — highest density because it nebulises undiluted oil, greatest reach at up to 1000m³ or about 2,000–3,000 sq ft, and the longest unattended run at 90+ days from a 400ml tank. Above its range you are into ducted commercial equipment such as Aangan at ₹25,999.
Which diffuser lasts longest without refilling?
Among machines, the Vaayu — 90 days or more per 400ml fill at a mid setting. Among ultrasonics, the Megh at about 100 hours from six litres. Among passive products, a 130ml reed bottle holds 14–18 weeks at a steadier level than any machine, on nothing but a weekly flip.
Is the most expensive diffuser always the strongest?
No, and the Megh is the clearest example in our own range: at ₹3,499 it costs nearly twice the Sukoon and covers less floor — about 215 sq ft against 270–320. It is bought for runtime and humidity. Price ladders in this category track capacity and features, not reach.
Can I make my current diffuser stronger without replacing it?
Often, yes — on two of the three meanings. Density: dose the tank to the fragrance's guidance instead of rationing samplers, or take a reed bottle from six reeds to nine, accepting about five weeks instead of eight on a 50ml. Persistence: use the timers, or move to a 130ml bottle. Reach is the exception; it is a property of the mechanism and cannot be improved by spending more inside the same format.
Should I run a large-space machine at maximum?
Rarely. A room that announces itself reads worse than one that feels considered, and in a property with guests or clients you cannot know who is sensitive to fragrance. The Vaayu has adjustable intensity and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers for exactly this reason. Ventilate first and scent second — a diffuser adds fragrance, it does not clean air or remove odours.
