The door test — four criteria a carried scent has to pass

Choosing a fragrance for your own home is a matter of preference and you get to change your mind. Choosing one to carry to somebody else's door is a matter of risk, and you get one attempt. The three cards below are the criteria I use, and they are not the criteria I would use for myself. Nothing here is about which scent is best; it is entirely about which scent is least likely to be wrong in a house you have not been inside for a year.

CRITERION ONE · NO CULTURAL LOADING

The scent must not already mean something in their house

Evening Calm₹799This is the criterion most gift guides never mention and it decides more outcomes than strength does. In an Indian home, four of the five registers arrive pre-attached. Rose has been met in soap. Jasmine belongs to a temple, a wedding or a grandmother's hair. Pine is what a floor cleaner smells like, unless it is real, in which case it takes a moment to be believed. Coffee is a specific memory of a specific place. The safe gift is the quiet one, not the impressive one

The blind-buy doctrine, stated once and applied consistently

Evening Calm at ₹799 is the safest blind buy in the range, on all four criteria at once. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the best answer for somebody hard to buy for, and the best answer for a man, a study, or a household with mixed tastes, because it is the least gendered and least sweet register we make. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the cheapest reed and the safest low-polarisation option at volume, which is why it is the one to buy identically when there are several doors on your route.

The two qualified recommendations matter just as much. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is the most-gifted floral and a strong gift when you know they like flowers — but it is not a blind buy, because anti-floral is a common position and a firmly held one. Somebody who does not want their house to smell of flowers will not be persuaded by how good the rose is; that is a category refusal, not a quality judgement. The hallway problem nobody accounts for

Here is the part that is specific to visiting and that no ordinary fragrance guide will tell you, because it only applies at a door. The house you are walking into during Diwali smells of food. Ghee, frying, cardamom, whatever has been on the stove since afternoon, forty diyas and a certain amount of smoke. That is the olfactory context in which your gift is being handed over, and it has two consequences. The second consequence is more useful. Before the practical notes, the honest one. There are doors where none of these five bottles is the right thing to be holding, and it is worth deciding that before you order rather than in the lift. On a first visit to a household, particularly to elders, mithai is the correct gift and a diffuser is a substitution nobody asked for — sweets are the expected form of that greeting and their expectedness is the whole point.
