Founder Diaries · Gifting · Instead of Plants
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated August 2026
When somebody says please don't get me another plant, they are almost never criticising plants. They are describing a household that has reached its limit — not of space, but of attention. A plant is a permanent claim on somebody's week, and a home has a finite number of those to give. It is the same shape of problem as the person who already has everything, except that the has-everything household has run out of shelf and this one has run out of capacity. Here is what to give instead, starting at ₹749, and an honest note on why the plants they already own are still the best thing in the room.
Quick answers — read this first
The answer: a consumable rather than an object. Morning Freshness reed diffuser, ₹749 for 50ml, runs 6–8 weeks and then it is finished. Nothing to keep alive, nothing to store, nothing to display out of politeness.

For someone genuinely hard to buy for: Mountain Breeze at ₹849 — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar. The least sweet and least gendered scent we make, and the one that wins over people who dislike home fragrance in general.

If you want it to feel larger: the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 — two 50ml bottles, so the recipient keeps the one they prefer.

The honest gap: there is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed diffuser in the SOSA line, and no aquatic or clean-linen accord. If that is the register the recipient loves, none of our five is it, and Mountain Breeze is the driest wood we have.
The short answer
Short answer: give something that gets used up. Morning Freshness at ₹749 for 50ml is the reed I recommend first, because a consumable is the only category of home gift that creates no long-term obligation at all — it is not kept alive, not stored, and not displayed to spare the giver's feelings. It ends by being finished, which is the cleanest ending a gift can have.
Why "no more plants" is not fussiness: a decorative object has to be found a place for. A living thing has to be found a place for and kept alive, indefinitely, by somebody. That second requirement never expires, cannot be politely declined, and does not scale — which is why the fifth plant in a flat feels different from the first. The person asking for no more plants is managing a real workload, not being ungrateful.
What to spend: ₹749–₹849 for one 50ml, running 6–8 weeks. ₹1,249–₹1,349 for a 130ml, running 14–18 weeks. ₹1,498–₹1,598 for a duo of two 50ml bottles, which is the best-value gift in the range because it hedges on taste. All ship free above ₹499.
Straight answer
What do you give someone who has said they do not want another plant?
1. Give a consumable, not an object. This is the entire principle. A person who has declined more plants has told you their house is full — of things to look after, of things to find a place for, or both. Morning Freshness at ₹749 runs 6–8 weeks and then it is gone, and the only thing left is a refillable glass bottle they can choose to keep or not.

2. Do not replace a living thing with an ornament. Vases, framed prints, brass objects and decorative bowls all fail the same test the plant failed: they must be given a permanent position and then displayed out of politeness for years. If the complaint is clutter or upkeep, an ornament is the same complaint in a different material.

3. For someone genuinely difficult, go dry and woody rather than sweet. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 — Himalayan pine, real sage, Indian cedar, 9.4 on the SOSA strength scale — is the least gendered and least sugary thing we make. Karishma N. in Delhi gave it to her father for his study, described him as the hardest person she knows to buy fragrance for, and he asked for a second one.

4. If you want the gift to look bigger, add a second scent, not a bigger object. The Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 is two 50ml bottles. It reads as a decision rather than a purchase, and it removes the risk of picking wrong, because one of the two will land.

5. Say the upkeep out loud when you hand it over. Flip the reeds now and then; refill the bottle when it empties. That is the schedule in full. Somebody who has been burned by high-maintenance gifts wants to hear the whole commitment before they accept it, and this one takes a sentence.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, six fibre reeds, refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: the person who does not want another plant wants a gift that expires. Give Morning Freshness ₹749, or Mountain Breeze ₹849 if they are hard to buy for, or the duo ₹1,498 if you want it larger. Do not solve a clutter problem with an ornament.
SOSA Mountain Breeze pine, sage and cedar reed diffuser
For the person who is difficult to buy for
Mountain Breeze · pine + sage + cedar ₹849 / 50ml
Himalayan pine, real sage and Indian cedar — 9.4 on the SOSA strength scale and the deepest woody we make, but still green rather than timber-heavy. It is the reed I send to people who have decided they dislike home fragrance, because most of what they dislike is sweetness, and there is none here. Least gendered scent in the range, correct for a study, a shared bedroom or a household that cannot agree. 6–8 weeks on the 50ml, 14–18 on the 130ml at ₹1,349.

The attention ledger, and why the fifth plant is a different object from the first

The reason this page exists is that gift-givers and gift-receivers are counting different things. The giver is counting objects: one more plant in a flat that has four is a small addition. The receiver is counting ongoing commitments, and by that measure the fifth is not an addition of twenty-five per cent — it is the one that turns a pleasant habit into a routine with a failure state. Below are the three ledgers a home gift can draw on, and the reason a consumable is the only category that draws on none of them.

1
LEDGER ONE · ATTENTION
Anything alive is a standing appointment that never ends
Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749Watering is not the burden. Remembering is. A plant is a small recurring item on a mental list that has no end date, and it is inherited by the recipient without being negotiated — which is precisely why people start saying no to them. A reed diffuser has one genuine ongoing action, flipping the reeds, and it carries no penalty for being forgotten: leave them alone and the bottle simply runs quieter and longer. The difference is not effort per week. It is whether forgetting has a consequence.
Give instead: something with no failure state. A bottle that empties is not a bottle that died.
2
LEDGER TWO · SPACE AND DISPLAY
An ornament is the same problem in a different material
SOSA Day & Night reed diffuser duoDay & Night duo₹1,498The commonest mistake in this situation is to swap a plant for a decorative object — a vase, a bowl, a framed thing — which solves the watering and keeps everything else. A displayed object has to be positioned, dusted and kept visible whenever the giver visits, and that last obligation is the one nobody admits to. A 50ml reed occupies roughly the footprint of a small vase and a 130ml not much more, but it is temporary by design: in eight weeks the surface is free again.
Give instead: something whose presence in the room has an expiry date built in.
3
LEDGER THREE · DUPLICATION
Plant people are the people most often given plants
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849There is a cruel loop in gifting: the moment somebody is known to like a category, they receive nothing else. The person with two nice plants becomes the person everyone buys plants for, and within three years they have a windowsill they did not plan and a reputation they cannot shake. Home fragrance is very unlikely to be the second one they were given that month, and even if it is, two bottles simply go in two rooms — which is better, not worse, because a house that smells identical everywhere stops registering the smell within a week.
Give instead: a category they are not already the designated recipient of.

In defence of the plants they already own

It would be easy to write this page as though plants were the problem, and they are not. A plant is alive, which no gift in our catalogue is, and the four or five that this person already keeps are almost certainly the best objects in their home. They change through the year. They record how long somebody has lived somewhere. They do something to a corner — to the light, to the sound, to the shape of a room — that a bottle on a console table cannot pretend to do. For a person who gardens, the right plant chosen because they mentioned wanting it is one of the most personal gifts there is, and if you have that information, use it. This page is not an argument against their collection. It is an argument against adding to it without being asked.

It is worth noticing what the request actually means, too, because it is usually more specific than it sounds. No more plants rarely means I dislike plants. It generally means one of three things: the light in this flat is already fully allocated, or the household's capacity for dependants is spoken for, or the last two gift plants arrived from people who did not know which ones would survive here. All three are practical statements about a home, made by somebody who has been paying attention to it. Treating that as fussiness is how a gift goes wrong; treating it as information is how the next one goes right.

And there is one case where you should ignore this entire page. If the person has said no more plants but keeps mentioning a particular one — a specific variety, something they saw, something that died and they were sad about — that is not a refusal, that is a wish list. Buy it. Nothing structural about consumables competes with a living thing somebody has already decided they want. The reed diffuser's case is for the far commoner situation where you are buying without that information and reaching for the plant because it is what people reach for.

Gifts for a home that has run out of capacity, compared

What people typically buy for a saturated home, judged on the two things that decide whether a gift is a pleasure or an admin task: whether it must be kept alive, and whether it must be kept at all. Only SOSA prices appear here — I have no verified figure for what a nursery, a florist or a homeware shop charges, and inventing one would be inventing market data.

The saturated-home table
Six gifts, and what each one costs the recipient after the day it arrives
Gift Must be kept alive? Must be kept at all? What it leaves behind SOSA price
Morning Freshness reed 50ml No No — 6–8 weeks, then finished A refillable glass bottle, if they want it ₹749
Mountain Breeze 50ml No No — 6–8 weeks The same, in the least polarising register we make ₹849
Day & Night duo No No — two rooms, 6–8 weeks each Two bottles and a choice ₹1,498
Another indoor plant Yes, indefinitely Yes — and it cannot be declined politely A commitment, or a small guilt
A vase, bowl or decorative object No Yes — permanently, and visibly when you visit An occupied surface
A food hamper or sweets No No — gone in days Nothing, and some households cannot use it at all
A scented jar candle (second option) No Only while it lasts — roughly 15–18 hours of burn Needs an occasion, a lighter and someone present ₹379 · two-pack ₹664

Three gifts that expire on purpose
The SOSA principle
The person who has everything has run out of shelf. The person who does not want another plant has run out of attention.
Both are answered by the same category: a gift that is used up rather than kept, and that nobody has to display out of politeness.

Choosing a scent for somebody with firm opinions

People who have started declining gift categories tend to have firm opinions generally, so the scent choice matters more here than it does for an easy-going recipient. Our doctrine has not changed across a hundred gifting pages. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the safest blind buy — Kashmir lavender, real chamomile, a soft musk drydown, and 8.9 on the SOSA strength scale, which makes it the gentlest thing we produce. It works in any room and carries no cultural loading. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the choice for the genuinely difficult: dry, green, unsweet, and the least gendered register we have.

Two I would think twice about. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is our most-gifted floral and it is beautiful, but a firmly held dislike of florals is common, rarely announced, and exactly the sort of opinion this recipient is likely to hold. Fresh Brew at ₹849 sits at 9.5, the deepest thing we make, and it is a gourmand — superb for someone who lives on coffee and wrong for a guess. Meera S. in Chennai reported that her mother-in-law wanted one only because it does not go cake-shop sweet, which is a precise description of the fear people have about gourmand home fragrance and the reason it is not a blind buy.

If the recipient's taste runs to oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber, I have to tell you plainly that the SOSA reed line contains none of those, and no aquatic or clean-linen accord either. Mountain Breeze is the driest, most resinous thing we have and it is the nearest honest answer; if it is genuinely oud they love, Nawaab at ₹399 is a personal attar with white oud and saffron, and it does not make an oud reed diffuser exist. I would rather send you elsewhere than sell you the nearest thing and let you discover the gap after it has been unwrapped.

"No more plants" is not a complaint about plants. It is a household telling you, politely, that its capacity is already allocated.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

The edit for a saturated home — and the honest gap

The order I would actually buy in, from the ₹749 bottle upwards. The last row is the gap, and it stays on every page in this family: no oud, no sandalwood, no vetiver, no amber, no aquatic, no clean linen, no gift hamper and no gift card. A duo is two bottles. Naming what does not exist is the only way the rest of the page is worth trusting.

No oud, no amber: the honest gap No oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed, and no aquatic or clean-linen accord. No gift hamper and no gift card either — the duo is a two-bottle product Said plainly rather than stretched to fit ₹849
Honest notes for buyers: alcohol-free reed diffusers on a heat-stable CCT base, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, climate-tested through 45°C heat and 85% monsoon humidity. Reed oil and the water-based Hotel Collection are separate products and are not interchangeable in either direction; there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser. Reed oil is a bottle of oil and is not something to leave within reach of a small child or a pet. Longevity figures assume ordinary Indian household conditions and shorten under a running AC. Composed in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Day & Night reed diffuser duo
When you want a larger gift without a larger object
Day & Night duo ₹1,498
Morning Freshness and Evening Calm, two 50ml bottles. For a recipient with firm opinions this is the sensible shape, because it removes the single risk in gifting fragrance: you are no longer betting everything on one guess. They keep the one they prefer and put the other in a second room. Two scents in a house also stops the nose going blind, which one bottle everywhere will do within a week. This is a two-bottle product and not a hamper — SOSA does not make one. 130ml × 2 is ₹2,498.

A note from Sonal

A friend of mine has eleven plants and a reputation. Every birthday for six years she has been given a twelfth, because once you are the plant person there is no way out of it, and every one of those gifts was chosen affectionately by somebody who had noticed something true about her. She has never once said anything ungracious about it. She has also, quietly, given four of them away.

What she said to me, and what made me write this page, was that she did not want another thing whose survival depended on her. That is a very different sentence from "I am bored of plants", and I think most people who say no more plants are saying the first thing and being heard as the second.

So the gift I send her now is a reed. It runs 6–8 weeks, it needs an occasional flip, and when it is finished nothing has died and nobody has to write me an apologetic message. If she ever mentions a specific plant she wants, I will buy that instead without a second thought — a plant is alive and I am not competing with that. Everything we make is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What do you gift someone who does not want another plant?
Something consumable rather than something to keep. Morning Freshness at ₹749 for 50ml runs 6–8 weeks and then it is finished; there is nothing to store and nothing to keep alive. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the version for someone hard to buy for, and the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 is the version when you want the gift to feel larger.
Is a decorative object a good substitute for a plant?
Usually not, because it fails the same test. A vase, bowl or framed print still has to be given a permanent position and displayed indefinitely, often out of politeness towards the person who gave it. If the recipient's objection is upkeep, an ornament removes the watering and keeps the obligation. A consumable removes both.
They love plants but have no room — is fragrance really the answer?
It is a good answer, and it does not compete with what they already have. A 50ml bottle occupies roughly the footprint of a small vase, a 130ml not much more, and in 6–8 or 14–18 weeks respectively that surface is free again. If they have mentioned a specific plant they want, though, buy that — a plant is alive, and a stated wish beats any structural argument on this page.
Does SOSA make an oud, sandalwood or amber reed diffuser?
No. The reed line has no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber, and no aquatic or clean-linen accord either. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the driest, most resinous thing we make and is the nearest honest answer. If it is specifically oud the recipient loves, Nawaab at ₹399 is a personal attar built on white oud and saffron — a body fragrance, not a home one.
How much upkeep does a reed diffuser really need?
One action, occasionally. Flip the reeds — every three to five days for Morning Freshness, every five to seven for Garden Bloom — and refill the bottle when it empties. Most people flip once a week or once a fortnight instead, and the bottle simply runs softer and longer. There is no version of neglecting it that ends badly, which is the whole point for this recipient.
