A bathroom has to earn its fragrance by beating odour first — and in a home with a toddler or a cat, it has to do that without a bottle they can reach or a mist they have to breathe. The safe answer is quieter and simpler than most people expect.
Quick answer
Format: a passive, alcohol-free reed diffuser — no heat, no cord, no mist to inhale.
Placement: high and out of reach of little hands and curious pets.
Level: low. A family bathroom should smell clean, not perfumed. And air the room first.
The short version
Short answer: Choose an alcohol-free reed, keep it low, and place it well out of reach. Reserve any ultrasonic mist for short, high, supervised bursts.
Let me be plain about what "safe" means here, because I won't oversell it. No home fragrance is meant to be eaten or drunk, and that includes ours. Safety in a family bathroom is mostly about format and placement — choosing a product with nothing hot, nothing electric and nothing to spill within reach, and then putting it somewhere small hands and paws simply can't get. Get those two right and you remove almost all of the everyday risk.

Placement
Out of reach, always
The oil in any diffuser is not for swallowing, and reeds can spill if knocked, so the reed is made safe by where you put it. Stand it on a high shelf or a windowsill a toddler can't climb to and a cat won't patrol — never on the edge of a low vanity or beside the bath. Wipe any spill promptly. This single habit does more for safety than any ingredient claim.
Don't: leave a reed or a diffuser tank at counter height where a child can tip it or a pet can lick it.

Keep it low, ventilate first
Children and pets have more sensitive noses than we do, so a family bathroom should smell clean, not strongly perfumed. Use fewer reeds, or a smaller bottle, and let the room stay understated. And remember the bathroom rule: air first. Run the fan or open the window so you are freshening a clean room, not covering odour with a heavier dose of scent.
