You have spent months on the fit-out, the stock has landed, and the first thing anyone notices is glue. It is disheartening and it is also completely ordinary. Two separate new things are settling at once, and almost everything you can do about it is free.
Quick answers — read this first
Why does my newly fitted footwear store smell of adhesive? Because a new retail interior is a large volume of freshly made material, and freshly made material off-gasses. Joinery adhesive, MDF and plywood, laminate bonding, paint and primer, sealants, vinyl flooring adhesive and new carpet backing all release the volatile part of their manufacture, most strongly in the first days and less every week after. On top of that you have taken a full opening delivery of newly made shoes bonded with solvent cement, sitting in sealed cartons. Neither source is unusual and both fade with air changes and time. It is a new-building smell, not a fault.
How long does the adhesive smell in a new store take to fade? Weeks rather than days, and how many weeks depends almost entirely on how much air moves through the space. Off-gassing is fastest at the start and slows steadily, so the difference between week one and week four is usually dramatic, and the difference between week four and week twelve is a quiet tailing off. Ventilation is the accelerator: a shut-up store with a recirculating split unit will hold the smell far longer than the same fit-out with genuine outside air running through it. Warm, well-ventilated conditions move it along faster than a closed, cool, sealed room.
Should I buy a scent machine before my store opens because of the glue smell? No, and I would rather say so now than take the order. A fragrance added during the loudest phase of off-gassing gives you a room that smells of new adhesive and of fragrance at the same time, and you will end up judging a scent you chose against a background that will not exist in two months. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour. Open the store, run the air hard, let the fit-out settle, and take the signature decision when the room has stopped changing under you.
The short answer
Short answer: Because everything in it is new. Joinery adhesive, MDF, laminate, paint, sealants and new flooring all off-gas after installation, and a full opening delivery of solvent-cemented footwear adds its own load in sealed cartons. Both fade with air changes and weeks, fastest at the start. The useful response is ventilation, opening cartons where air moves, and time - not a diffuser bought before the doors open.
The pick: No product this month. Run the ventilation hard, keep the stockroom door shut, open cartons where air moves, and let the fit-out settle for several weeks. If you are worried about anything beyond smell, that is a question for your ventilation engineer or the material manufacturer, not for a perfumer.
Next step: Tell us your opening date, floor size and what the fit-out is made of, and we will tell you when to take the scent decision - ask for a store scenting plan.
Why does a brand-new footwear store smell of adhesive, and what should I do about it?
Because two separate new things landed in the same month, and both of them off-gas. The first is the fit-out. A retail interior is an enormous quantity of freshly manufactured material installed inside a small sealed volume: joinery adhesive in every carcass and shelf, MDF and plywood, laminate bonded to substrate, primer and paint on every wall, silicone and acrylic sealant along every junction, vinyl or engineered flooring with its adhesive, and new carpet with a new backing. All of those release volatile components after installation. That release is at its loudest in the first days, drops steadily over the following weeks, and tails off after that. The second is the stock. An opening order is the largest and newest delivery the store will ever take: hundreds of pairs made recently, bonded with solvent cement between upper, midsole and outsole, sealed into cartons and then into a container, and opened all at once in your building. Together they produce exactly the smell you are describing, and neither of them is evidence that anything has gone wrong. What changes it is air and time, in that order. Off-gassing does not respond to cleaning and it does not respond to fragrance; it responds to the volatile fraction actually leaving the building, which means genuine outside air moving through the space rather than a split unit chilling the same air. Run the ventilation hard through the fit-out snagging period and the first trading weeks, including outside trading hours where the building allows it. Open cartons at a back door or under extraction. Keep the stockroom door shut so its far higher density does not vent onto the floor every few minutes. Then let it be. What I will not do is sell you a diffuser in week one. A scent laid over a room that is still off-gassing gives you both smells at once, and worse, you will judge your signature against a background that will have disappeared by the time you have got used to it. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour, or that it cleans or purifies air. One honest boundary: if your question is about anything other than how the room smells, that is a matter for your ventilation engineer or the manufacturer of the materials, and we make no claim about it either way. Ask for a store scenting plan and we will time the decision with you rather than rush it.
New fit-out plus new stock equals a new-building smell. Air changes accelerate it, weeks finish it, and a fragrance bought now just joins the queue.
When the room has stopped changing under you - usually some weeks in, not on opening day - the sneaker-floor register is SOSA Morning Freshness from ₹749: passive, no power, no water, no residue on new joinery or glass. Bought in week one, it is a second smell in a room that already has two.
Being straight with you: these cards do not answer this page. None of them shortens off-gassing, and we make no claim that they do. They are for the decision you take once the fit-out has settled and you can smell what your store is actually like underneath. If you are three weeks from opening and reading this at midnight, the right spend is on getting air through the building, not on anything below.
Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Cool, dry and the natural counterweight in a rubber-led room. Passive, so nothing damp goes near new joinery, laminate or boxes. Worth choosing after the fit-out has settled, when you can judge it against the room you will actually trade in.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Where the interior is leather and dark wood, dry woods sit under the leather and extend it. Same timing advice: choose it against a settled room, not against a fit-out that is still finishing.
Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus reed diffuser in 50ml (₹749) and 130ml (₹1,249). Passive - no power, no noise, no maintenance beyond turning the reeds.
Three things to get right in the opening weeks, and only one of them costs money.
1
First, run the air hard
Off-gassing leaves with the air, and with nothing else
The single most useful thing you can do in the first weeks is move outside air through the building, generously and often. Where the unit allows it, ventilate outside trading hours as well - overnight and on closed days are when a fit-out does most of its settling and when nobody is inconvenienced by an open shutter or a running extract fan. Understand what your air conditioning is and is not doing: a split unit cools and recirculates, which is comfort rather than exchange, so the same air is being chilled repeatedly with everything still in it. If the store is inside a mall you may be working with a fixed system and limited options, in which case ask the mall engineer what fresh-air provision the unit actually has. I am not going to print a target air-change figure, because the right one depends on your volume, your fit-out and your equipment, and that is a question for a ventilation engineer.
Tip: the loudest week is the first one. If it is no better by week four, look at whether any outside air is genuinely reaching the space.
Morning Freshness is the register for a sneaker-led floor, from ₹749 - a decision for later in the settling period.
The fit-out and the stock are different problems with different timelines
It is worth knowing which one you are smelling, because they behave differently. The fit-out is a fixed, finite load: it was installed once, it is releasing on a curve that only goes downward, and it will genuinely be quieter every month without you doing anything except ventilating. The stock is a rolling load: every delivery refreshes it, so it does not simply fade away - it settles to whatever level your delivery rhythm and stockroom density maintain. If your store is still strongly adhesive at six months, the answer is far more likely to be stockroom and carton handling than joinery. Test it crudely: stand in the empty part of the floor away from stock, then in the stockroom doorway. If the two are similar, it is the building. If the stockroom is far louder, your fit-out has already settled and you are smelling shoes.
Tip: do this test on a Monday morning before the doors open, when both sources have had the night to build up.
Mountain Breeze - pine, sage and cedar - for a leather and dark-wood interior, from ₹849.
You cannot choose a signature against a background that is about to disappear
There is a particular mistake I see in new stores, and it is expensive. The owner opens, notices the adhesive, panics, buys a commercial machine and sets it high enough to be noticed over the new-building smell. Three months later the fit-out has settled, the room underneath is quiet, and the setting that seemed necessary in week one is now overwhelming - and by then everybody has stopped noticing how strong it is, because they have been standing in it every day. Wait. Let the room reach its resting state, then choose a register against that, then set the level low. If you must do something in the first weeks, do the free things: air, carton handling, stockroom door. The signature will be a better decision for having been taken later, and it will almost certainly be a smaller one.
Garden Bloom - British rose and night-blooming jasmine - is the occasion-boutique register, from ₹799, when the time is right.
For a leather and dark-wood fit-out: Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - dry woods that sit under leather rather than over it. From ₹849.
The worst time to choose a signature scent is the week you open. You will be choosing it against a smell that will not be there by the time you have paid for it.

Three registers, one later decision
Chosen against a settled room, not a fit-out still finishing
When the room has settled and you want a register, this is the honest short list, and for most new single stores it is a reed rather than a machine. Passive, so nothing damp goes near new joinery, boxes or leather. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The timing matters more than the product. Nothing here shortens off-gassing, and we make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour, or that it cleans, purifies or disinfects air. On anything beyond how the room smells - materials, adhesives, ventilation provision - we make no health or safety claim, and that is a question for your ventilation engineer or the manufacturer. We also make no claim that scent affects sales, footfall, browsing or what anybody buys. Ask for a store scenting plan and we will time it with you.

A note from Sonal
Owners write to me in the week they open, and I can hear the exhaustion in it. Months of work, a beautiful room, and the first comment anybody makes is about glue. What I try to say quickly is that this is the most temporary problem in the whole cluster. A fit-out off-gasses hardest at the start and less every week afterwards, and the store you are worried about is not the store you will have in three months.
So my advice to a new store is almost always to spend nothing with me yet. Ventilate outside trading hours. Move the unboxing to a back door. Shut the stockroom door and let it close itself. Then wait, and take the signature decision when the room has stopped changing under you - because a register chosen in week one is chosen against a background that is on its way out.
The limits, plainly. Ambient fragrance is an interior and brand decision, and we make no claim that it increases sales, footfall, browsing or influences what anyone buys. We make no therapeutic, medical or wellbeing claim of any kind, and none about materials or ventilation. It never masks a smell that has a source, staff judgement outranks mine, it is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a new footwear store smell so strongly of adhesive?
Because two new things arrived together. The fit-out contributes joinery adhesive, MDF and plywood, laminate bonding, paint, sealants and new flooring or carpet, all of which off-gas after installation. The opening stock delivery contributes hundreds of newly made, solvent-cemented pairs opened out of sealed cartons. Both fade with air changes and weeks.
How long will it take for the smell to go?
Weeks rather than days, and it depends mostly on ventilation. Off-gassing is loudest at the start and slows steadily, so week four is usually far better than week one and week twelve is a quiet tailing off. A sealed store with only a recirculating split unit will hold it much longer than the same fit-out with genuine outside air moving through.
Should I install a scent machine before opening day?
No. Anything you choose now is being judged against a background that will not exist in three months, and a fragrance laid over a fit-out that is still settling gives you both smells at once. Ventilate, handle cartons well, and take the signature decision when the room has stopped changing. Most single stores then find a reed from Rs 749 is enough.
Is the off-gassing from a new fit-out harmful?
That is outside what a perfumer should answer, and we make no claim about it in either direction. What we can say is that new fit-outs and new stock off-gas, and that it fades with air changes and time. If you have a concern beyond how the room smells, ask your ventilation engineer or the manufacturer of the materials used.
My store is six months old and still smells of adhesive. Why?
At six months the fit-out is usually no longer the main source, so look at the stock instead. Rolling deliveries refresh the load continuously, and a dense stockroom of sealed cartons that vents onto the floor whenever the door opens will keep a store smelling new indefinitely. Check the stockroom doorway against an empty part of the floor and you will know.
For an occasion boutique: Garden Bloom - British rose and night-blooming jasmine - the one retail room where a true floral is genuinely right. From ₹799.
SOSA — Clinic Scentingfor newly opened footwear stores, sneaker boutiques and designer shoe retail
In the opening weeks of a new store, the useful work is free: run the air hard including outside trading hours, open cartons at a back door, and keep the stockroom door shut. When the fit-out has settled and you can smell the room underneath, a reed from ₹749 is usually the whole answer for a single store. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
