But anti-floral is a firmly held position in a great many households, and if you do not know, do not find out this way.

Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee, Kerala vanilla and soft caramel at 9.5 — the deepest thing in the range and a genuine pleasure for someone who loves coffee. Meera S. in Chennai bought it for a reading corner and reports that her mother-in-law now wants one, having said yes only because it does not go cake-shop sweet. Why not one of those three questions is about her being a woman

This page is filed under gifts for her because that is how the question is asked, and I would rather answer the real question than pretend it is not being asked. But the answer does not depend on the recipient's sex at any point, and I want to be specific about why, because the lazy version of this page is written a hundred times a year and it gets people the wrong bottle. The convention that florals are feminine and woods are masculine is a marketing inheritance, not an observation about noses. It survives because home fragrance is advertised almost entirely to women, which produces a self-fulfilling shelf rather than any evidence about preference.

Meanwhile Garden Bloom's most enthusiastic reviews include a man who bought a batch as wedding gifts and another who reports his living room now reads as a quiet hotel after Sunday biryani. If the register mattered by sex, none of that would be happening.

What does matter, and matters a great deal, is the register itself. A soft herbal reads as calm to almost everyone. A dry wood reads as focus. A floral reads as occasion and polish. A gourmand reads as comfort and food. Those are the four real signals, and they belong to rooms, moods and habits. Those are different goods, not cheaper versions of the same one.

And if she has a house scent she has repurchased more than twice, do not compete with it. Either buy a register she does not own — a dry green room is a genuinely new experience in a house that is otherwise floral — or buy a duo so she can keep her preference and place the second bottle elsewhere. A 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is not a gift, incidentally; it is for somebody who already owns the bottle, and giving one to a person who does not is giving them a large bottle of oil and a problem.
