People ask me which kitchen diffuser to buy far more often than they ask where to put it — and the second question decides more than the first. The same reed that seems to do nothing by the hob will scent the whole room from a far shelf. Placement is where a kitchen scent is won or lost.

Why: heat wrecks how a fragrance behaves and drains it fast; splashes and mist don't mix; still corners let scent pool.

A kitchen is the most hostile room in the house for a diffuser — heat, steam, splashes, grease and strong food smells, all in a small space. That is exactly why placement matters so much more here than in a bedroom or foyer. Where does a kitchen diffuser actually belong?
1. Away from the hob, heat and flame. This is the first and firmest rule, for two reasons. Heat makes a fragrance evaporate too fast and behave erratically, and keeping oil, water or an electrical device near a live burner is simply unsafe. Put scent at the opposite end of the kitchen from the cooking.
2. Clear of the sink and splashes. A reed knocked by water, or an ultrasonic catching splashes, is a short-lived reed or a hazard. Keep both well away from the tap and the draining board.
3. On a far counter, with a little height. The end of the counter furthest from the hob, or a shelf just above it, lets the scent drift down and across the room rather than pooling in a corner.
4. Where air moves. Near a window or the doorway, the natural airflow carries the note through the kitchen. A still, closed corner is where scent goes to disappear.
5. Not on top of the bin. Don't place fragrance to cover a bin — deal with the bin at source. Scent sitting over odour just gives you both at once.

My honest caveat: placement makes a good scent work, but it doesn't make fragrance do a job it can't. Last night's fish and this morning's oil are cleared by your extractor, pan lids and cleaning — not by moving a diffuser around. What good placement does is let a clean reed hold the cleared air fresh, evenly, for weeks. Right spot, right result; and if a reed ever seems to run out fast, the cause is almost always heat, so move it further from the hob and it will settle down.

Why does my kitchen reed diffuser run out so fast?
Usually because it is too close to heat. A reed placed near the hob or in a hot patch evaporates far quicker than one on a cooler far counter. Move it away from the cooking zone and it will last noticeably longer and diffuse more evenly.
Should the diffuser be near the bin?
No. Don't use fragrance to sit on top of a smelly bin — that just mixes scent with odour. Deal with the bin at source by emptying and cleaning it, then place the diffuser elsewhere on a far counter. Fragrance crowns clean air; it does not cover a dirty bin.
