Let me be honest about the places a diffuser should not go, because a bad spot causes most of the complaints I hear. Do not sit it flush against a wall or on bare wooden furniture, where mist can leave a fine dampness or dust mark over time. Do not put it on the floor, on or near electronics, in a direct AC draught, tilted at an angle, or shut inside a wardrobe. I am Sonal Sahani, an ISIPCA-trained perfumer, and here is the honest exclusion list.
Quick answers — read this first
The worst spots? Flush against a wall, on bare wood, on the floor, on electronics, in an AC blast, tilted, or inside a closed wardrobe.

Why not against a wall or on wood? Fine mist can settle as dampness and, over time, leave a faint dust mark on the surface behind or beneath it. A small tray solves it.

Simple fix? Stand it on a tray on a raised, level surface with a little clearance behind, and use filtered water and SOSA water-based fragrance only.
The short answer
Avoid: walls, bare wooden furniture, the floor, and closed cupboards or wardrobes.
Avoid: on or beside laptops, TVs, speakers and other electronics.
Avoid: a direct AC draught, and any tilt - keep the unit level.
Do instead: a tray, a raised level surface, clearance behind, filtered water, SOSA fragrance only.
Why water-based fragrance, not raw oils (illustrative)SOSA water-based fragrance — mists cleanly, made for the plateRaw essential / carrier oils — thick, can clog & damage the unit
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
Straight answer
Where should I NOT place an ultrasonic diffuser?
Keep it off five kinds of spot. Not flush against a wall, where the mist plume can dampen the surface. Not directly on bare wooden furniture, where fine mist over weeks can leave a faint watermark or dust line - stand it on a tray. Not on the floor, where the mist settles instead of spreading. Not on or beside electronics such as laptops, TVs, routers and speakers. And not in a direct AC draught, at a tilt, or sealed inside a wardrobe or cupboard, where there is neither airflow to carry the scent nor room for the mist to clear.
One line: not on walls, bare wood, the floor, electronics, in an AC blast, tilted, or in a closed wardrobe.
Use only SOSA's water-based fragrance - it mists cleanly and protects the plate.

The places to avoid

Most diffuser problems are placement problems, not product faults. A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser throws a light, damp plume of scented mist upward, and where that plume lands matters. Here are the spots I tell customers to skip, and the honest reason for each.

Avoid Why
Flush against a wall The mist plume can dampen the wall over time; leave a little clearance.
Bare wooden furniture Fine mist can leave a faint watermark or dust line on unprotected wood - use a tray.
On the floor Mist settles low and never spreads; the room stays underscented.
On or near electronics Laptops, TVs, routers and speakers do not mix with fine mist.
Direct AC draught A cold blast scatters the mist before it fills the room.
Tilted or inside a wardrobe A tilt can cause leaks; a closed cupboard has no airflow to carry scent.

The wall and wooden-furniture points surprise people most, so let me be plain about them. The unit will not ruin your home overnight. But run it in the same spot every day for months, pressed against a painted wall or sitting on a bare wooden console, and you may notice a faint mark where the mist consistently lands. It is easy to prevent: pull it a few centimetres off the wall and stand it on a small tray, coaster or ceramic dish.

Myth: "A diffuser on the floor humidifies better because heat rises." Cool mist is not warm - it does not rise on its own the way warm steam does. On the floor it simply pools low. Raise it to spread it.

Care that protects the unit

Two habits keep a diffuser healthy for years, and both are about what goes inside as much as where it sits.

Filtered or RO water, room temperature, never hot. Hard tap water leaves scale on the plate, and hot water has no place in a cool-mist unit. Clean, cool water is the single kindest thing you can do for it.

And the fragrance. This is the honest heart of it: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance in these diffusers. Raw essential oils, neat perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy, and they can coat and clog the ultrasonic misting plate and shorten the unit's life. Our fragrance is built to ride the water and mist cleanly - a few drops in the tank is all it takes.

Keep it level. Ultrasonic tanks are not sealed like a bottle. On a slope or an unstable surface, water can find the vents. A flat, stable, raised surface keeps the mist where it belongs and the electronics dry.

A tray, a level surface and the right water-based fragrance - that is ninety per cent of diffuser care.

One more note on scent versus air. A diffuser makes a room smell wonderful; it does not purify the air. If you want that lobby-clean fragrance, place the unit well, use SOSA water-based fragrance, and let good placement do the spreading.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my diffuser directly on wooden furniture?
Stand it on a tray, coaster or ceramic dish rather than on bare wood. Over months of daily use, fine mist can leave a faint watermark or dust line on unprotected wood; a small barrier prevents it entirely.
Why should I keep it away from the wall?
The mist plume can dampen a wall over time if the unit is pressed right against it. Leave a few centimetres of clearance so the mist disperses into the room instead of onto the paint.
Is it a problem to place a diffuser near my laptop or TV?
Yes, keep it clear of electronics. Even a cool-mist unit throws fine moisture into the air, and laptops, TVs, routers and speakers are better kept away from it.
What happens if I use raw essential oils instead of SOSA fragrance?
Raw essential oils, neat perfumes and carrier oils are too thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the ultrasonic misting plate, harming performance and the unit's life. Use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, which is made to mist cleanly.
Can I keep a diffuser inside a wardrobe to scent my clothes?
It is not designed for that. A closed wardrobe has no airflow to carry the scent and no room for the mist to clear, and any tilt inside can risk a leak. Scent the room instead and let the fragrance drift in when the doors open.
