2. Ask where they spend their hours. A flat wants a reed diffuser at ₹749–₹1,349. A car wants the Safar at ₹3,999 or a car perfume from ₹449. The decision tree — four questions, and they must be asked in this order
Nearly every gift guide begins with a budget and then looks for the nicest thing inside it. That order is wrong for this recipient and produces the specific failure everybody recognises: an expensive, tasteful, entirely reasonable object that is thanked for warmly and never used. Start with the life instead. A brother who spends two hours a day driving and a brother with a showroom are two different purchases and neither of them is a reed diffuser, however good the reed diffuser is. On the fragrance side the gaps are just as specific. There is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser, because the seven hotel-inspired scents are water-based and formulated for an ultrasonic machine; reed oil cannot go into an ultrasonic and hotel oil will not travel up a fibre reed. When we started writing these guides I was told, more than once, that the commercially sensible thing was to recommend the reed diffuser on every page.
