By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
A social club can treat fragrance as an experience. A business club cannot, because the room has a job. Members are closing rounds in the corner, interviewing a candidate at the long table, taking a call from a subsidiary in another time zone and reading a term sheet they have already read twice. In a room with that job, premium is not a mood the fragrance creates — it is the fragrance declining to create one. The register should be dry, cool and legible for about three seconds as a member comes through the door, and then it should sit beneath the level anyone could put a name to for the rest of the day. That is the whole answer, and the rest of this page is why, what to specify, and the four rooms in a business club I would leave alone entirely.
Quick answers — read this first
The register: dry and transparent. White tea, bergamot, a dry cedar or vetiver spine, a green or faintly herbal edge. Nothing sweet, nothing powdery, nothing gourmand, nothing that reads as a spa. A working room is the one environment where the fragrance must not be more interesting than the conversation.

The level: clearly present at the threshold, and below naming everywhere a member sits down. Arrival lasts fifteen seconds; a business floor is occupied for six hours, and the person who sets the intensity has been breathing it since seven in the morning.

What to specify: Vaayu ₹11,999 for a zone, Aangan ₹25,999 where the club is on one air system. Waterless, so no humidity and no residue on laptops or paper.

The honest gap, stated twice on this page: no purchasable refill oil is published for the waterless commercial machines — that fragrance is specified and quoted per property. And a business club should not scent its meeting rooms, its dining room or its gym floor, which means a surprising amount of a premium club is deliberately left alone.
The short answer
Short answer: a premium business club should smell dry, cool and quiet — tea and bergamot over cedar or vetiver, with a green edge and no sweetness at all — delivered as a gradient rather than as a level. The entrance and the lift lobby may be clearly fragranced because nobody stands in them. The working floor, the lounge and the coworking tables should sit under the threshold at which a member would describe the room as scented. Meeting rooms, the dining room, the bar counter and the gym floor stay unscented.
Why work changes the brief: in a hospitality room the fragrance is part of what the member is there to enjoy, so a degree of presence is welcome. In a working room the fragrance is competing for attention with something the member has come specifically to concentrate on, and it will lose that competition in the only way that matters: by being noticed. A fragrance a member notices at hour four is a fragrance they will mention at committee. This is why every honest answer in a business club argues the level downward and almost never upward.
What is specifiable: Vaayu ₹11,999 — waterless cold-air nebulising, up to 1000 m³ ≈ 2,000–3,000 sq ft per unit, sealed residue-free 400ml tank lasting up to about 90+ days depending on intensity and hours, adjustable intensity, run windows of 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h, day selection, auto-stop, key-lock, under 38 dB, freestanding, wall-mounted or fitted into an HVAC return, on a DC 12V / 1A 5W point, CE, RoHS and SGS. Aangan ₹25,999 covers up to 3,000 m³ ≈ 8,000–10,000 sq ft through a mechanical HVAC or AHU connection, 800ml reservoir, under 42 dB, DC 12V at 14W, programmable work and pause cycles. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
What should a premium business club smell like, and how is that different from any other kind of club?
1. Dry, cool and transparent — and quieter than the brief you were given. White tea as the spine, bergamot as an accent for daylight, dry cedar or vetiver for structure, and a green or faintly herbal edge to stop the whole thing reading as an office building. No vanilla, no caramel, no amber, no powdery florals and nothing that reads as a spa treatment. A working room is the wrong place for a fragrance with a personality.

2. Build a gradient, not a level. The threshold and the lift lobby are transit spaces where a member is present for seconds, and those are the only two places in a business club that may be unambiguous. The lounge, the coworking floor and the reading tables are occupied for hours and must sit below naming. Same identity everywhere, three different intensities. That is what a member reads as a building with a character rather than a building with a scent.

3. Name the rooms you are not going to scent, and name them first. Dining rooms, private dining and bar counters stay neutral because fragrance in a dining room competes with the food and flattens wine, and a chef and a sommelier will both say so. Private meeting rooms and the boardroom default to unscented: a small closed volume, a long meeting and guests who did not choose to be there is the worst combination in the building. The gym floor needs air change rather than perfume. Saying that out loud is what makes the rest of a fragrance proposal credible to a house committee.

4. Choose waterless, and treat the machine as a building service. An ultrasonic diffuser mists oil diluted in water: it adds humidity to a room full of laptops and paper and can leave a fine white mineral dust on dark surfaces. A waterless cold-air nebuliser shatters undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist carried by the room’s own airflow — no water, no dilution, no added humidity, no residue. Vaayu wants a DC 12V / 1A 5W point at its mounting position; put it on the electrical drawing now rather than chasing a socket later.

5. Set it once and lock it. The one person in the building who cannot judge the intensity is the person who has been inside it since seven in the morning, and that is usually the person holding the remote. Set the level, write it down, turn the key, and judge it only by walking in from the car park. Everything SOSA makes is alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, composed in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: dry tea, bergamot and cedar, with no sweetness — clearly present for three seconds at the door and below naming everywhere a member works. Meeting rooms, dining and the gym floor stay unscented. In a business club, premium is what the fragrance declines to do.
SOSA Vaayu waterless cold-air scent machine
The machine a business club should start with
Vaayu · waterless cold-air nebuliser ₹11,999
Pressurised air shatters undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist carried by the room’s own airflow — no water, no dilution, no added humidity and nothing deposited on a laptop lid, a stack of printed decks or a dark stone counter. Up to 1000 m³ ≈ 2,000–3,000 sq ft per unit. Sealed residue-free 400ml tank lasting up to about 90+ days depending on intensity and hours. Adjustable intensity with auto-stop and a key-lock, run windows of 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h and a choice of days, so the machine can follow the building’s occupancy rather than run at a steady level into an empty floor. Under 38 dB, which matters in a room where people are on calls. Freestanding, wall-mounted or fitted into an HVAC return, on a DC 12V / 1A 5W supply. Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons. CE, RoHS and SGS. Black and white.

What premium actually means when the room’s job is work

Every brief I am sent for a business club uses the word premium and almost none of them defines it, so the first useful thing to do is separate the three quite different things it turns out to mean. It is never a note. There is no ingredient that costs more and therefore smells more expensive in a room; the same composition can read as luxurious in one club and as an air freshener in another, and the variable is almost always dose rather than formula. Any composition pushed too high flattens into a single sweet or sharp impression, and that flat impression is precisely what people mean when they say a place smells cheap. Restraint is the luxury signal, and it is the only one in this business that costs nothing.

1
MEANING ONE · NON-INTERFERENCE
The fragrance must not be more interesting than the meeting
SOSA Vaayu waterless cold-air scent machineVaayu₹11,999In a spa or a hospitality lounge, a member who becomes conscious of the fragrance has had a good experience. In a business club, a member who becomes conscious of the fragrance has been interrupted. That is the entire difference between this family and every other family in this cluster, and it drives every decision that follows. The correct level in a working room is the level at which a member would say the room feels good and would not think to say why. Anything above that is a distraction charged to the club’s subscription. It is also worth being blunt about the direction of the error: in twenty visits I have never once been asked to raise a level that members had complained about being too low. The complaint is always the other way, and it always arrives after the machine has been running for a fortnight and staff have stopped being able to judge it.
The practical version: commission at the bottom of the intensity range and step up over a week, one notch at a time, judging each step only by walking in from outside. Coming down from too strong costs credibility with a membership that pays a joining fee. Coming up from too quiet costs nothing at all.
2
MEANING TWO · LEGIBILITY AT ONE POINT ONLY
The nose reports change, so spend the signal where members are moving
SOSA Aangan HVAC nebulising diffuserAangan₹25,999There is a reason members describe smelling the fragrance as they walk in and not while they are sitting in it, and it is not a fault in the machine. Two things stack: crossing a threshold means moving from low concentration to higher concentration in a second or two, and the nose reports change far better than it reports a steady state. Sitting still in a room is a constant stimulus, and olfactory receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes — the signal keeps arriving, the brain stops forwarding it. A club that understands this stops trying to make the lounge smell of something and starts spending its signal at the doors, the lift lobby and the top of the stairs, where members are in motion and the gradient does the work for free. The corridor is doing more for a business club’s identity than the lounge ever will, and it costs less to scent because nobody lives in it.
What this looks like on a drawing: the machine goes in the airflow path near the entrance rather than behind the reception desk, and the lounge either shares that air or runs at a materially lower setting of the same fragrance. Never two different fragrances in connected volumes.
3
MEANING THREE · REPETITION OVER YEARS
The premium signal is that it is identical on a wet Tuesday in your third year
SOSA Mountain Breeze cedar reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849A business club sees the same four hundred people every week for years, which is the opposite of a hotel’s problem and the reason a hotel’s answer transfers badly. With that audience, the thing that reads as expensive is not the composition but the consistency — the fact that the building smells the same at eight in the morning as at eight at night, the same in April as in August, the same this year as two years ago. Members bond with that without noticing it and they notice immediately when it breaks. Which means the real premium decisions are operational rather than perfumery ones: a written setting, a key-locked machine, a refill cadence somebody owns, and a rule that the fragrance is never changed for a season or an event. A club that switches scent for a festival has just told its members the identity was decoration.
The unglamorous specification: a schedule that matches occupancy, a named person responsible for refills, and the intensity written into the house SOP so that the answer to “who turned it up?” is that nobody can.

The register, material by material — and the four I would strike out

With the level settled, the composition is the straightforward half. A business club wants a dry register, and dry is a structural description rather than a poetic one: it means the composition has little sweetness, little powder and no heavy resinous base, so it does not accumulate into something thicker as the hours pass. That matters more here than anywhere else in a club, because the same member is in the same chair from ten until four and will experience whatever the fragrance becomes at hour five, not what it was at the moment it was commissioned. Four materials do nearly all the useful work.

White tea is the spine. It is transparent, faintly astringent and almost weightless, which in a working room is exactly the quality you want: it gives the air a character without giving it a subject. Bergamot supplies daylight. It is what stops a cool, grey, glass-walled floor reading as cold rather than as calm, and it is also the lightest material in the composition and will always leave first, so it belongs as an accent rather than as the structure. Cedar or vetiver gives the room a floor. Cedar is dry rather than creamy and close to linear over hours, so at four in the afternoon it still smells like cedar; vetiver is earthier and slightly smoky-green, and suits a club with dark timber where cedar would disappear into the joinery. A green or herbal edge is the fourth element — something vegetal and a little bitter — and it is the difference between a composed room and a well-mannered office lobby.

What to strike out is equally definite, and it is worth having the list in front of the committee before anybody falls in love with a sample. No gourmand: vanilla, caramel, praline, coffee and anything else edible reads as food, and a business club serves real food all day, so the fragrance and the kitchen end up arguing in the corridor. No powdery floral, which ages a modern interior by twenty years in one breath and is the single note most responsible for a club being described as smelling like a hotel lobby. No heavy amber or resin, which builds through the afternoon and is at its strongest exactly when the room has been occupied longest. And no leather, tobacco or smoke, which is the direction most often requested for a club of this kind: SOSA publishes no leather fragrance in any format and no tobacco or smoky fragrance for any diffuser, and I would rather say that plainly than sell you the nearest thing. In a panelled room the leather is already present and supplying its own smell; the better answer is to sit beside it with clean woods, cedar, vetiver or tea rather than to imitate it.

Every direction a house committee proposes, judged for a working floor

The directions that come up in every business-club conversation, what each one does in a room where people are concentrating, and how each behaves by the fourth hour rather than in the first thirty seconds. The last two rows are the ones I would strike out, and the final row names something SOSA does not publish at all.

Directions for a business club
What each does to a room whose job is work
Direction What it does in a working room By the fourth hour Verdict
White tea ★ Transparent and faintly astringent; character without a subject Does not build; still light at five o’clock The spine of the composition
Bergamot and dry citrus Daylight in a grey room; reads as clean rather than as fragrance Lightest material present; leaves first, so use it as an accent Specify, but never as the base
Dry cedar Gives the room a floor without warmth or sweetness Near-linear; unchanged over a working day Specify. The safest wood for this room
Vetiver Earthy, green, faintly smoky; holds up against dark timber Stable and serious; the grown-up alternative to cedar Specify where cedar would vanish into the joinery
Gourmand — vanilla, caramel, coffee Reads as food in a building that serves real food all day Accumulates and turns cloying; members describe it as sickly No. Nothing edible on a working floor
Powdery or white floral The note that makes a club smell like a hotel lobby Thickens, and dates the interior around it No, and this is the commonest expensive mistake
Leather, tobacco or smoke The direction most often asked for in an executive club Cannot be assessed here — it does not exist in the range SOSA publishes no leather fragrance in any format and no tobacco or smoky fragrance for any diffuser. Sit beside the leather with cedar, vetiver or tea instead of imitating it
Specify the property
The zone machine, the whole-floor machine, and a ₹849 way to settle a committee argument
The SOSA principle
In a room built for leisure, fragrance is one of the things a member came for. In a room built for work, it is one of the things a member is trying to concentrate through.
Which is why a business club is the one property type where the correct answer to almost every fragrance question is a smaller number.

The route through a business club, zone by zone — including the rooms to leave alone

A club is not a room, it is a sequence, and a business club has a particularly legible one: car park, threshold, reception, lift lobby, a corridor, the members’ floor, a meeting room, lunch, back to the floor, out. Fragrance in that building is a question about a route and a timeline rather than about what any single room should smell like. Reason in volume rather than floor area while you walk it, because a double-height entrance or a galleried stair consumes coverage that a square-foot figure conceals, and treat a closed door as a boundary while an open plan is a single volume however large.

The threshold and the lift lobby carry the signal. These are transit volumes, heavily disturbed by doors, and members are in them for seconds at a time, which is exactly the condition under which the nose reports a gradient rather than adapting to a level. Put the machine in the airflow path rather than in the sightline — near the supply, or fitted into an HVAC return, which has the additional virtue of removing the object from a reception desk that was designed without it. The members’ floor and the coworking tables sit well below that. Same fragrance, materially lower intensity, delivered continuously rather than in bursts, because a strong interval in a room where someone has been sitting for three hours is precisely what gets described as overpowering. The corridor between them is the connective tissue and often the best place in the building to spend the budget, because it is where members are moving and where the door of every room opens into something.

Now the rooms to leave alone, which is the part of this page a committee should read twice. The dining room and any bar counter stay neutral — ambient fragrance competes with the food, flattens wine and is the one thing a chef and a sommelier will both object to, and no amount of careful composition gets around it. Private meeting rooms and the boardroom default to unscented: small closed volumes, meetings that run ninety minutes, and visiting guests who did not choose to be in the room and cannot leave it. Let the corridor outside carry the identity in for three seconds each time the door opens. The gym floor needs air change rather than perfume, because fragrance over exertion odour produces a mixture rather than a cancellation; scent the wellness reception lightly instead. And if any part of the club smells stale in the morning, that is a building problem and not a fragrance one: source, then moisture, then ventilation and air change, then cleaning, and only then fragrance. Fragrance laid over musty does not produce fragrance, it produces musty-and-fragrance, and members read that mixture as a cover-up within a week.

A business club is judged on its fragrance the way it is judged on its air conditioning. Nobody compliments it. Everybody notices the moment it is wrong.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

The business-club edit, in order — and the honest gaps

What I would do with a premium business club, in the sequence I would do it. The first three steps involve no purchase at all, which is deliberate: they are the steps that decide whether anything bought afterwards works. The last two rows name what is not worth buying and what SOSA does not publish, rather than steering you toward the nearest thing on the shelf.

The business-club edit
What to do, what to specify, and what to leave unscented
Step What it is Why it matters in a working club Cost
1. Fix the building first ★ Source, moisture, air change, cleaning — a fresh-air purge before opening, dry carpets, serviced drain traps A club that does this smells better before a single machine is bought, and fragrance over stale air reads as a cover-up No purchase
2. Walk the route and write the zones Threshold, lift lobby, corridor, members’ floor, meeting rooms, dining, gym — with connected volumes and closed doors marked A closed door is a boundary and an open plan is one volume; the zoning decides the machine count, not the square footage No purchase
3. Decide what stays unscented, in writing Dining, private dining, bar counters, meeting rooms, the boardroom, the gym floor Naming these is what makes the rest of the proposal credible at committee, and it removes the arguments you would otherwise have later Saves machines
4. Try the dry register before specifying it A cedar reed diffuser on the secretary’s desk for a fortnight, on three reeds rather than six Settles an argument about direction for ₹849 instead of after a commissioning visit. It will not scent a floor, and is not meant to ₹849
5. Specify the zone machine Vaayu, up to 1000 m³ ≈ 2,000–3,000 sq ft, under 38 dB, key-lock, DC 12V / 1A 5W at the mounting position Waterless, so no humidity near laptops and paper and no white dust on dark surfaces. The low-voltage point belongs on the drawing ₹11,999
6. For a whole floor on one air system Aangan on a mechanical HVAC or AHU connection, up to 3,000 m³ ≈ 8,000–10,000 sq ft, programmable work and pause cycles Puts the fragrance into the air the building is already moving, which is how consistency is achieved rather than bought ₹25,999
Do not buy: a machine for every room A per-room machine in meeting rooms and the boardroom, and a second lounge machine because the first “feels weak” The rooms that feel weak are usually the rooms staff have adapted to. The rooms that need a machine least are the ones most often given one Saves ₹11,999 each
The honest gaps: what is not published No purchasable refill oil is listed for the waterless commercial machines — that fragrance is specified and quoted per property. No consumption rate, running-cost figure, adaptation time in minutes, throw figure or machine count as a formula is published for any SOSA machine Said plainly, because a specifier will look for those numbers and should know in advance that they are not there rather than be given invented ones Quoted
Honest notes for a house committee: SOSA fragrances are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle on the reed line, composed in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer. The Hotel Collection oils are water-based and ultrasonic-only, taking three to six drops in the water tank; they are not for reed diffusers and not for the waterless commercial machines. SOSA sells no air purifier and no dehumidifier and makes no health, air-quality, VOC or mould claim of any kind. SOSA publishes no leather fragrance in any format and no tobacco or smoky fragrance for any diffuser. Dining rooms, private dining and bar counters stay neutral; meeting rooms, the boardroom, spa treatment rooms, gym floors and heritage libraries are best left unscented. Commercial enquiries are answered through the contact page. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with any hotel brand.
SOSA Mountain Breeze pine sage cedar reed diffuser
A ₹849 way to test a direction before you specify it
Mountain Breeze · pine, sage, Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
This is a reed diffuser and it will not scent a members’ floor. A reed is a passive device: oil climbs six fibre reeds and evaporates, with no energy used and no air moved, which means it scents roughly the two metres around the bottle. That is a fragrant zone rather than a fragranced room, and adding more bottles adds more small zones rather than one large one. I would not sell one for a business club floor. What it is genuinely good for is letting a house committee live with the dry woody-green direction for a fortnight before anyone commissions a specification — Himalayan pine, real sage and Indian cedar at 9.4 on the SOSA strength scale, on a heat-stable CCT carrier tested at 45°C and 85% RH. Use three reeds rather than six. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks; the 130ml at ₹1,349 runs 14–18.

A note from Sonal

The most useful hour I have spent in a business club was one where I said almost nothing. The general manager walked me through at half past seven in the morning, before the staff arrived, and the building was quiet and cool and smelled of very little — and it was already, at that moment, the best it would smell all day. Everything we discussed afterwards was about how not to spoil it.

That is the sentence I would like a house committee to hold on to. A premium business club starts from a clean, dry, well-ventilated building, and fragrance is the last thin layer laid on top of that, not a substitute for any part of it. If the carpets are damp, if the AHU has been off all night, if the drain traps in the members’ washrooms have dried out, then a machine will give you a room that smells of two things instead of one, and the second thing will read as a cover-up. I have watched a club spend a great deal of committee money discovering that.

The other thing I would say is about the word premium itself. Members of a business club are, almost by definition, people who are sold to constantly and who have become very good at recognising when it is happening. A fragrance that announces itself is a sales gesture, and they will read it as one. A fragrance that is simply there, the same on every visit for years, at a level nobody can quite name, is read as a building that is well run — which is the only impression worth buying. Everything we make is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl’s classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What should a premium business club smell like?
Dry, cool and transparent — white tea as the spine, bergamot as an accent, dry cedar or vetiver for structure and a green or herbal edge — with no sweetness, no powder and nothing gourmand. Deliver it as a gradient: clearly present at the threshold and the lift lobby where members are moving, and below the level anyone would name on the working floor where they sit for hours. Meeting rooms, dining areas, bar counters and the gym floor stay unscented.
Why does a business club need a lower level than a social club?
Because the fragrance is competing with something the member came to concentrate on. In a hospitality room, noticing the scent is part of the experience; on a working floor, noticing it is an interruption, and the complaint always arrives in the same direction — too strong, never too quiet. Members also stay for hours, and receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes, so the person who sets the level is the one person in the building who can no longer judge it. Set it once, key-lock it, and assess it only by walking in from the car park.
Which rooms in a business club should not be fragranced at all?
The dining room, private dining and any bar counter, because ambient fragrance competes with the food and flattens wine. Private meeting rooms and the boardroom, because they are small closed volumes holding long meetings and guests who did not choose to be there. The gym floor, which needs air change rather than perfume. Spa treatment rooms, which carry their own therapy oils. Naming these rooms is what makes a fragrance proposal credible to a committee, and it is also cheaper.
Can we use a leather or tobacco fragrance in an executive club?
Not from SOSA, and I would rather say so than stretch something to fit. SOSA publishes no leather fragrance in any format and no tobacco or smoky fragrance for any diffuser. The better answer is usually the true one as well: in a panelled, upholstered club the leather is already in the room supplying its own smell, and a leather accord laid on top of it is the one combination that reads as artificial. Sit beside it with clean woods, cedar, vetiver or tea instead.
What does a scenting system for a business club cost to run?
The capital cost is published: Vaayu at ₹11,999, Aangan at ₹25,999 and Meenar at ₹38,500 as the larger-property option specified on enquiry. The running cost is not published, because no purchasable refill oil is listed for the waterless commercial machines and no consumption rate exists on any SOSA page — the fragrance for those machines is specified and quoted per property through the contact page. That is the normal shape of a commercial scenting quotation rather than an evasion, and I would be wary of anyone who gives a club a monthly figure before seeing the building.
