A large, multi-storey home is exactly where scent goes wrong most easily — a different smell behind every door, floors that feel like separate houses. The fix is one scent, sized and zoned, carried through the air so the whole villa agrees with itself.

The villas I have scented tend to arrive with the same problem, and it is not a bad smell — it is incoherence. The ground floor carries a floral candle, the first floor smells of whatever spray the bedroom favours, the stairwell smells of nothing, and the whole thing feels like a hotel where each floor was decorated by a different, warring designer. A large home has more air and more doors than a flat, so the temptation to solve each space separately is stronger, and the result is more fractured. Zoning a villa without clashing
Zoning sounds complicated; it is really just deciding which rooms belong to the signature and which do not.
