A thank-you to a research supervisor is a strange thing to price, because what you are thanking them for has no price on it. Hours of reading drafts nobody else would read. Corrections at ten at night. The question is not what that is worth. It is what can be given without putting them in an awkward position.
Quick answers — read this first
What is a good thank-you gift for a research supervisor? Something small for their working room, handed over after the assessment is done, with a letter that carries the actual thanks. A reed diffuser between ₹749 and ₹1,349 is the right shape: it sits on a shelf, needs no power, and assumes nothing about their taste in what they wear. Mountain Breeze — pine, sage and cedar — is the driest register in the range and the least likely to read as sweet or personal in a department cabin. Check what your institution allows before you buy.
What exactly is the gift marking? Years of somebody's attention, most of it invisible and none of it in their job description in the way you experienced it. A supervisor reads drafts that are not yet good, argues with you about a chapter more than once, and keeps a project alive through the parts where you could not. That is what the note should describe, in specifics. The object is what the note arrives in. An expensive object does not measure any of it better than a cheap one, and it creates a problem the letter does not.
Is a thank-you gift to a supervisor appropriate at all? Yes, when it is modest, unmistakably a thank-you and correctly timed. The professional-distance rule is what keeps it clean: a supervisor holds your assessment and writes your references, so the gift must never look like flattery or like it is buying something. Keep it small, give it after the result, and never hand it over in front of a room of other scholars. Many institutions have written rules about gifts to staff, and some set a value cap, so check yours first.
The short answer
Short answer: Give something small for their working room and put the thanks in writing. A reed diffuser between ₹749 and ₹1,349 is modest, passive and impersonal enough to be accepted without a second thought. Time it after the assessment is over. The letter is where the years of supervision get described, and that is the part a supervisor keeps.
The pick:SOSA Mountain Breeze at ₹849 for 50ml — pine, sage and cedar, the driest register in the range and the least likely to feel personal in a shared academic room.
Next step: Tell us what the supervision involved and what you want to spend, and we will suggest something honest. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
How do you thank somebody for years of supervision without overdoing the gift?
By separating the two halves of the gesture and getting them the right way round. The thanks go in writing. A research supervision is a long, uneven, largely private relationship — the person read work that was not ready, argued with you about the same chapter more than once, and kept the project going through the stretch where you could not see the end of it. None of that is visible from outside, and no object describes it. A letter can. Name the specific things: the paper they pushed you to submit, the week they read a chapter twice, the correction you resented at the time and used anyway. That is the part that gets kept, and it costs nothing. The object is what the letter arrives in, and it should be small. The professional-distance rule does not relax because the relationship was long. A supervisor signs off your work and writes references for years afterwards, which means a large gift is not generous but awkward — it has to be thought about, sometimes declared, occasionally handed back. A reed diffuser between ₹749 and ₹1,349 sits exactly in the right band: it goes on a shelf, needs no power, and says nothing about the person's taste or body. Mountain Breeze at ₹849, with its pine, sage and cedar, is the driest thing in the range and the least likely to feel sweet in a working cabin. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the cleaner, more neutral alternative. Time it after the assessment. While the thesis is still being examined, your supervisor is still an assessor, and a present in that window reads differently than you intend. After the defence is better; after conferral is cleanest. Hand it over privately, not in front of other scholars, and if your whole group wants to give, do it as one gift with everybody's name on the card. Check what your institution allows before any of this. What none of it claims is that an object changes how a supervisor regards you — what a gift means belongs to the person receiving it. If you want help sizing it, ask us to help choose a gift.
The letter does the thanking and the object is what it arrives in. Keep the object small, give it after the result, and hand it over privately.
For a department cabin I would take SOSA Mountain Breeze at ₹849 — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry, unsweet, and it reads as furniture rather than as a present with something behind it.
Sizing, plainly. A 50ml reed is a desk or shelf object and suits a cabin, a study corner or a small office. A 130ml is the one for a larger room or a shared lab space. Reeds throw more in warm, moving air and less in a cold, closed room, and either bottle can be dialled down by using fewer reeds.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry, unsweet and entirely ungendered — the register least likely to feel out of place in an academic room. 50ml ₹849, 130ml ₹1,349.
Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Clean and hard to dislike, which is what you want when you know the work but not the person's taste. 50ml ₹749, 130ml ₹1,249.
Persian saffron and pink pepper over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh and amber. A worn gift for a relationship where you know the taste. 3ml ₹385, 6ml ₹679, 12ml ₹1,165.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar reed diffuser in 50ml (₹849) and 130ml (₹1,349). Dry and unsweet - the register that suits a working room, a cabin or a staffroom.
Three things that decide whether a supervisor's thank-you lands the way you meant it.
1
The specifics
A general thank-you is a wasted one
The difference between a note a supervisor reads once and a note they keep is specificity. Anyone can write that they are grateful for the guidance. Almost nobody writes down the actual moments — the draft returned with more comments than text, the conference they made you apply to, the afternoon they defended a decision of yours in front of somebody senior. Those details are unique to your supervision and they are the only part of the gesture that could not have come from anybody else. Write three of them. It will take longer than choosing the gift did and it is the half of the exercise that carries the weight. If you write nothing else, write the year you nearly stopped and what they said about it.
Tip: Handwrite it if you can. If your handwriting is genuinely bad, type it and sign it — a legible letter beats an illegible gesture.
2
The size
Modest is not mean, it is the only version they can accept easily
There is a persistent idea that a longer relationship should produce a larger gift, and in ordinary friendships that is true. In a supervised relationship it is not, because the asymmetry does not disappear at the end. Your supervisor will be asked for references about you for years. Anything that could be read as buying goodwill is a burden rather than a compliment, and a substantial present is exactly the thing that has to be weighed, mentioned to a colleague, sometimes returned. A ₹749 to ₹1,349 room object clears all of that without any thought at all. If the amount feels too small for what the person did, that feeling is correct and the letter is where you resolve it.
Clean, ungendered and entirely unremarkable in the best sense.
Two practical details that people get wrong. First, timing: hand it over after the assessment has finished rather than while it is running. Submission is a milestone but the examination is still live, and a gift in that window sits badly however plainly it was meant. After a successful defence is better, and after the degree is conferred there is no question at all. Second, setting: give it privately rather than in front of a room of other scholars, because a public handover makes it an event and puts the recipient on the spot. A quiet moment at the end of a meeting, or left with a card, is the right register for a thank-you that is not supposed to be a performance.
The SOSA principle
The object is small on purpose. It is not a measure of what the supervision was worth — nothing sold anywhere is — it is simply what the letter arrives in.
We make no claim that a fragrance changes how anybody regards the person who gave it; what a gift means is the recipient's business.
For a department cabin: Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. The driest register in the range, and the one that reads least like a present. From ₹849.
When you know the work but not the person: Morning Freshness at ₹749 — Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Clean, neutral and about as hard to object to as a fragrance gets.
Choose for the room it will actually sit in, and keep the size where it can be accepted without thought. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Check your institution's rules before you buy. Universities, institutes and funding bodies often have a written policy on gifts to staff, sometimes with a value limit, and a gift that has to be declared or returned puts your supervisor in exactly the position you were trying to avoid. There is nothing in our range under ₹300; below that, pool or write a letter. We make no promise about delivery dates, wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal
The research scholars who write to me about this are usually not asking what to buy. They are asking how to say something they have not managed to say for five years, and they have decided an object might carry it. It will not, and I think that is worth saying kindly rather than bluntly. The object is a courtesy. The saying is a letter, and most people find it easier once somebody tells them the letter is allowed to be long.
When I do recommend something, I recommend it for the room rather than the person, and I usually recommend the driest register we make. A supervisor's cabin is a working space with too much in it already. Something clean and unsweet on a shelf is easy to live with and easy to ignore, and both of those are virtues in a gift that is meant to be a thank-you rather than an event.
Scenting a room is an ambience decision and SOSA makes no outcome, therapeutic or medical claim for it; no product here masks an odour and none is offered as hypoallergenic. Alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts about our attars and not skin or allergy claims — patch-test, and where somebody may be sensitive to fragrance, give the room instead of something worn. Whether a scented object suits a shared institutional space is the owner's judgement. Made in India, with a portion of every order supporting girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
What should I give my research supervisor as a thank-you?
Something small for their working room, with the thanks written out properly. A reed diffuser between Rs 749 and Rs 1,349 sits on a shelf, needs no power and assumes nothing about their taste. Mountain Breeze at Rs 849 is the driest register and the least likely to feel personal in a cabin. Write three specific things about the supervision in the card.
Is a thank-you gift to a supervisor appropriate?
Yes, when it is modest, clearly a thank-you and given after the assessment. A supervisor holds your result and writes your references, so nothing should look like flattery. Keep it small, hand it over privately rather than in front of the group, and check your institution's rules first, since some set a written value limit on gifts to staff.
What do I write in the note?
Specifics. Not that you are grateful for the guidance, but the actual moments: the draft that came back covered in comments, the application they made you submit, the year you nearly stopped and what they said. Three of those are worth more than any object, and they are the only part of the gesture nobody else could have written.
Can I spend more if the supervision was long?
The years belong in the letter rather than in the price. A larger present does not measure a longer supervision, and it does create something your supervisor has to weigh up. If the amount feels too small for what they did, that feeling is right and the writing is where you resolve it. If a group wants to spend more, pool into one gift.
Reed or attar for a supervisor?
Reed, unless you are sure of their taste. A reed sits on a shelf, needs no power and carries no implication about the person; an attar goes on skin and assumes knowledge you may not have, and fragrance sensitivity is real. If you are sure, a 3ml attar from Rs 379 is a small way to give something worn after the result is in.
A worn gift, where you are sure of the taste: Ameeri — saffron and pink pepper over Taif rose and sandalwood, on soft oudh. 3ml ₹385, and six to eight hours on skin.
SOSA — Clinic Scentingfor research supervisors and the people they supervised
