Step one, clear the sources, and do not skip it. Start with the shoes, because in most Indian homes they are the single biggest contributor and the one people misdiagnose. A shoe does not smell because it is dirty on the outside. It smells because bacteria are living on the perspiration residue soaked into the lining and the insole, and what those bacteria need is warmth, moisture and darkness. A foot puts out a genuinely surprising amount of moisture over a day, and closed leather and synthetic shoes hold almost all of it in the lining. Take the shoe off at seven in the evening and it is warm and damp on the inside. Put it straight into a cabinet and you have handed that colony every condition it wants for the next twelve hours. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a shoe that is spotless on the outside can still be the reason your foyer smells. Air shoes on an open rack before they go away, rotate pairs, take insoles out overnight, cut ventilation into the cabinet doors and keep baking soda, activated charcoal or silica gel inside the box. Wash the doormat and keep a spare in rotation through monsoon. Dry umbrellas open rather than folded. Move the bin off the entrance air path, wash it rather than only emptying it, and pour a mug of water down any unused utility drain weekly. Fit a brush strip under the front door to cut the corridor air from the lift lobby and garbage chute. And check the foyer is not acting as the kitchen's exhaust route. Step two, size it by air volume. Measure length by width by height in cubic metres, because entrances are often tall. One SOSA Vaayu covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. There is a genuine efficiency argument for scenting at the entrance, and it is worth understanding before you decide where the machine goes. The entrance is almost always on the main air path of the home, because the front door, the passage and the living room are how air actually moves through a flat. A machine placed on that path does not only scent the three metres around it - the same air carries the fragrance into the living and dining areas as it circulates. So one machine at the entrance frequently does the job of the whole floor, which is why I recommend one 1000m³ machine there rather than three small ones scattered about. Step three, place it properly. Placement is the difference between a machine that works and a machine that disappoints you, and the rules are simple. Put it on the air path, not in a corner. A pretty niche behind the door is exactly where the air is not moving, and fragrance sitting in still air stays a small pool instead of travelling. Near the passage into the living room, beside an air-conditioning return, or in line with the normal circulation route is what you want. Do not point it straight at the front door. The draught every time the door opens will scatter the output and send a good part of it into the common corridor, so you pay for fragrance and your neighbours enjoy it. Aim it inward, along the passage. In a narrow foyer, go up. The Vaayu wall mounts, and above eye level on a side wall keeps it out of the traffic, keeps it out of the way of a console that is already full, and puts the output where air is moving freely rather than at ankle height. Keep it out of reach of children - pure fragrance oil is not something you want a curious two-year-old opening, which is what the key-lock is for. And keep at least a foot of clear air around it so the output is not immediately blocked by a shoe rack door or a curtain. Step four, schedule it. Two short low windows a day - one before the house wakes, one in the early evening - using 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, rather than continuous high output. Before guests, start it 30 to 45 minutes ahead on a medium setting. Step five, choose one profile for the whole floor. On the fragrance itself, an entrance is a specific brief and not simply a small living room. It is the first thing anybody smells, it is usually a small volume, and people pass through it rather than sit in it - so it can carry a slightly more defined character than a bedroom, but it must not be heavy, because a heavy scent in a small hall is the fastest way to make a house feel like a shop. What works is clean, cool and structured: white tea and green tea, light woods such as cedar and vetiver, soft citrus, fig, clean musks, a touch of green or a dry mineral note. Those read as air, space and order, which is exactly the impression an entrance is meant to give. What fails is anything sweet and gourmand - vanilla, caramel, cocoa, heavy amber - because sweetness at the door reads as a candle shop and, in a foyer that has any shoe or damp note left in it, sweetness plus that note is the specific combination that smells wrong. Very heavy florals and big ouds are also a mistake in a small hall in a hot climate; they are beautiful compositions in the wrong volume of air. On running cost: the tank is 400ml lasting up to about 75 days depending on intensity and hours, which is roughly five fills a year, and the machine draws 5W, about 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule. Where an entrance genuinely has no socket, If the entrance has no plug point - and a great many Indian foyers do not, because nobody plans a socket for a shoe cabinet - the honest answer is not to run an extension cord across the hall. It is a reed diffuser. Nothing about diffusing a fragrance breaks down, neutralises, captures or cancels the smell already in a room, and any brand that tells you otherwise is overselling a fragrance product. Run a diffuser over a foyer that still holds the shoe cabinet and you get both at once, which is genuinely worse than either alone, because the nose stops reading two smells and starts reading one confusing new one. One line worth being clear about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier. It does not filter, disinfect, dehumidify or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind.
