Owners ask this expecting to be told they need two settings, and usually two machines to produce them. The honest answer is that your building already produces the difference, for nothing, and the only skill involved is not undoing it.
Quick answers — read this first
Should browsing and consultation areas smell the same? They should carry the same fragrance at the same machine setting, yes. What they will not do is read the same, and that is the point. A consultation table sits further from wherever the source stands, so the air reaching it has travelled and thinned. The customer perceives a gradient - clearest on the open floor, quieter where they sit down - without you having engineered one. Two settings would require two machines, and two machines in one volume of air produce a seam somewhere between them rather than two clean intensities.

Then why does the consultation area feel quieter? Distance and stillness. The showroom floor has people moving through it and, in most boutiques, the air-conditioning supply somewhere overhead; a seated corner is further along that path and less disturbed. By the time the air reaches a chair, it has diluted. There is a second reason and it is the one worth remembering: a customer at a table has been in the building far longer than one walking the cases, and exposure compounds with time. Something that reads as right in the first minute reads as more in the fortieth, so the quieter corner is doing you a favour.

What does it cost to do this properly? One machine, correctly placed. For a boutique of roughly 1,500 sq ft and up with an open floor and a seated area, that is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, run low on a timer matched to trading hours. Under about 750 sq ft it is one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Total hardware spend: one machine, not two. And to be plain - no one can promise you ambient scent moves a business number, and a supplier offering you a figure is selling.
The short answer
Short answer: the same profile at the same setting in both. The consultation area will read quieter than the browsing floor anyway, because it stands further from the single source and because a seated customer has been breathing that air far longer. That difference is correct, it is free, and adding a second machine at the table removes it. One Vaayu (₹11,999) from about 1,500 sq ft, one Sukoon (₹1,899) below 750.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) placed on the showroom air path and left at a low setting, with nothing at all at the consultation table - or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) if the whole boutique is a single room under about 750 sq ft.
Next step: send the floor plan with the browsing cases and the consultation seating marked, and we will tell you where the one machine goes and what to start it at - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

The difference you want between a browsing floor and a consultation table already exists in the building. One source produces it; two sources remove it and put a seam where the customer is sitting.

Straight answer
Should browsing areas and consultation areas in a watch boutique have the same fragrance intensity?
They should have the same fragrance at the same setting, and they will not have the same intensity - and both halves of that sentence matter. Start with the profile, because that part is simple: a boutique has one volume of air and therefore one fragrance. The browsing floor and the consultation corner are not separated by a wall in most stores, and even where they are, the door is open most of the day. Two fragrances in one connected volume do not produce two experiences; they produce a mixed one in the middle, and a customer walking from the cases to the chair passes through a join. Now the intensity. Set one machine on the showroom air path - not at the door, which is a subject of its own - and run it at a low setting. What happens next is free. The air reaching a consultation table has travelled further, been diluted along the way and is sitting in a corner that people move through less, so it reads quieter than the open floor does. That is the gradient owners try to buy with a second unit, and their building was giving it to them already. There is a second physical fact that makes this correct rather than merely convenient. A customer at a consultation table has been in your air far longer than one glancing at a window display, and exposure compounds - the same air that reads as right in the first minute reads as more in the fortieth. So the room where people sit longest is exactly the room that should receive the least, and a store that boosts its consultation corner is going the wrong way twice over. This is also why I set the level for the seated hour rather than the arrival: if it is comfortable after an hour at the table, it was never going to be a problem on the floor. The honest concession is that some consultation rooms genuinely sit outside the reach of the machine - behind a shut door with their own air-conditioning zone, for instance. If yours does, the answer is still not a second unit at the table; it is to move or wall-mount the existing one so its output reaches the doorway, and to accept that a properly closed room will always read fainter. One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers this for a boutique from about 1,500 sq ft; under 750 sq ft one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest buy and a Vaayu would be the wrong machine. The Vaayu is waterless, so it adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine, not a claim about your stock, which is a question for the brands you carry and their watchmakers. And the guardrail, said plainly: ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or seating, it is never used to cover another smell, and nobody can promise you it moves a business number. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the floor plan.
Same fragrance, same setting, one machine. The consultation table reads quieter on its own because it is further from the source and because the customer has been sitting in the air for an hour. Do not fix a gradient that is working.
One SOSA Vaayu on the showroom air path - 1000m³ rated, adjustable intensity, key-lock so nobody adds output at the table by hand, under 38dB beside a seated conversation. ₹11,999, and that is the whole hardware bill. Under 750 sq ft buy the Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead.

The machine, and why one is the answer

This question has a single-machine answer at every size, and the only real decision is which machine. The images link through to the product pages so you can check the specifications before you order.

SOSA Vaayu
Open floor plus seated consultation, 1,500 sq ft and up
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, auto-stop and key-lock. Wall or HVAC mountable, which is how one source reaches a seated corner without standing in it.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Sukoon
A single-room boutique under about 750 sq ft
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. If your browsing and consultation areas are two ends of one small room, this is the honest buy, and a machine at six times the price would be covering a fraction of what it is rated for.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
One source for the browsing floor and the consultation corner together
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

Why the gradient happens on its own

Three things are doing the work here, and none of them is a setting on a machine.

1
Let distance do the dilution
Air that has crossed a showroom is not the air that left the machine
Output from a single source thins as it travels and mixes with everything else in the room. A consultation table eight or ten metres from the unit, tucked out of the main circulation path, receives a diluted version of what the open floor receives - and that is the whole mechanism. Nobody has to calibrate it. What ruins it is a second machine placed at the table to make the two areas match, which turns a smooth fall-off into two sources meeting somewhere in between, usually right where a customer is walking from one to the other. One source, placed where the air moves, is both the cheaper answer and the better one.
Tip: Walk from the furthest case to the consultation chair with your eyes on the floor. If you cannot pick the moment it changes, the gradient is right.

2
Set the level for the sixtieth minute
Exposure compounds, so a long sit is the honest test of the setting
A browsing customer is in your air for a few minutes; someone choosing a piece at a table can be there for an hour or more. The same concentration is experienced very differently across those two spans, because a person seated in a room accumulates exposure to it while a person passing through does not. This is a physical fact about breathing the same air for a long time, and the only correct response to it is a lower setting than a store people walk through would use. The way to check is unglamorous: sit at your own consultation table for a full hour, at the setting you have chosen, with the door as it normally is.
Tip: If you find yourself aware of the fragrance at minute forty, it is too high - even if it felt right when you walked in.

3
Keep one profile, whatever you do about level
Two fragrances in one connected volume produce a join, not two rooms
The temptation with a consultation area is to give it something of its own - warmer, more particular, more special. In a store where the two areas share air, that produces a mixture in the transition zone rather than two clean identities, and the mixture is nobody's choice. Keep one profile across the whole building. The register for a watch boutique is dry either way: dry woods, a leather facet, sometimes a soft dry amber, dry tea or citrus at the brighter end, and never anything sweet, edible or powdery. Differentiate the consultation experience with seating, water, light and the advisor's attention, which are the things a customer actually registers as care.

The SOSA principle
You do not buy two intensities - you buy one source and let the floor do the rest, because a consultation table that stands ten metres from the machine is already the quieter room you were about to pay for.
And it should be quieter, because the person sitting there has been breathing your air for an hour rather than a minute.
SOSA Vaayu
One machine, one setting: SOSA Vaayu runs a single low intensity on a timer, and the browsing floor and the consultation corner sort themselves out by distance. ₹11,999.

The plan, area by area

The same brief written out as a plan, worth pinning up wherever the machine actually lives.

The SOSA plan
Browsing versus consultation - what each area actually gets
The area What to do
Entrance and threshold
Nothing of its own. The door exchanges this air constantly, so it takes whatever reaches it and no setting changes that.
SOSA VaayuOpen browsing floor
The single source, at a low setting, on a timer matched to trading hours. This is the reference point for everything else.
Consultation table in the open plan
Nothing of its own. It reads quieter by distance, which is the correct outcome and needs no correction.
Closed consultation room
Still nothing of its own. If it reads too faint, move or wall-mount the one machine towards its doorway before considering anything else.
SOSA SukoonA single-room boutique under 750 sq ft
One Sukoon at ₹1,899. There is no meaningful distance to work with, so you are buying a fixed low level rather than a gradient.

If the consultation room is the part of the building you are really asking about, it has a post of its own in how to scent a private watch-consultation lounge, which argues that the room people sit in longest should get the least. And the underlying level question - how low is low - is set out in how subtle fragrance should be in a high-end watch boutique. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
Quiet enough to sit beside: Under 38dB, which matters when the seated conversation in your building is the one where a price gets said out loud. ₹11,999.
One source, one setting, a gradient for free
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ - more than a boutique floor needs, so it runs low rather than hard.

In fifteen years nobody has asked me to make a consultation table smell stronger, and if they ever do I will tell them to move the chairs rather than the dial.

The SOSA specification for a two-area boutique

Two machines cover almost every boutique with a browsing floor and a seated area, and which you need is decided by size rather than by how many areas you have. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA before a multi-store commitment. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Keep one profile across the building, hold one setting, and let distance produce the difference between the floor and the table. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or seating; it is never used to cover another smell, and where a store has a fit-out, carpet or corridor-ingress problem the honest answer is to fix that first. To be plain about the commercial question: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, browsing time, conversion or spend, and any supplier quoting you a figure is selling. A note from Sonal

The question nearly always arrives with the second machine already half-chosen. Someone has decided the consultation area is the important part of the store, wants it to feel more considered than the floor, and assumes that means more fragrance. I understand the instinct and I think it is exactly backwards. The consultation area is where somebody sits for an hour; the floor is where somebody stands for four minutes. Whatever level you would choose for four minutes is too much for an hour.

What actually happens in a well-set store is that one machine on the showroom air path makes a soft fall-off across the building, and the seated corner ends up at the quieter end of it without anybody trying. I would not describe that as a compromise. I would describe it as the gradient every over-scented boutique in the country is trying to manufacture with two units and a lot of fiddling. If you keep one source and one setting, you get it for the price of one machine and no ongoing argument about which room is on what number.

On hardware: an open floor plus seated consultation from about 1,500 sq ft is one Vaayu at ₹11,999, and it will spend its life at a low setting behind a key-lock. Under 750 sq ft it is a Sukoon at ₹1,899 and I would not sell you the bigger machine. I will not tell you what either does to a sales figure, because I do not know and neither does anyone quoting you one. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should browsing areas and consultation areas have the same fragrance intensity?
They should carry the same fragrance at the same machine setting. They will not read the same, because a consultation area sits further from the single source and receives air that has already travelled and thinned. That difference is the gradient owners usually try to buy with a second machine, and one correctly placed unit gives it to you for nothing. One SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 from about 1,500 sq ft, or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 under 750.
Should I put a second machine at the consultation table?
Almost never. Two sources in one connected volume of air do not create two clean intensities; they create a join somewhere between them, usually across the path a customer walks from the cases to the chair. If the consultation room is genuinely closed with its own air-conditioning zone and reads far too faint, move or wall-mount the existing machine towards its doorway first. A second unit belongs to a second volume of air, not to a second corner of the same showroom.
Why does my consultation area smell weaker than the showroom floor?
Because it is further from the source and less disturbed by movement, so the air reaching it has diluted along the way. This is normal and it is the outcome you want. There is a second reason to be glad of it: a seated customer has been breathing your air for far longer than someone glancing at a display, and exposure compounds with time, so the room where people stay longest is the room that should receive the least.
How do I know if the setting is right for a long consultation?
Sit at your own consultation table for a full hour at the setting you have chosen, with the door as it normally is, and see whether you are still aware of the fragrance at minute forty. If you are, it is too high, even if it felt correct when you walked in. Then ask the advisors who work at that table every day, because your nose adapts within about twenty minutes and theirs have the only real measurement in the building.
Will a stronger consultation area help close a sale?
No one can promise you that, and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support such a claim, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the twenty other things a customer experiences at a consultation table. The question worth answering is whether the air in that corner agrees with the seating, the lighting and the price being discussed, which you can judge for yourself by sitting in it.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference.
