Attar is one of those words people use confidently without being entirely sure what is in the bottle. It is worth knowing, because the thing that makes an attar a good teacher gift is not romance about tradition — it is a practical property of how the oil behaves once it is on somebody's wrist.
Quick answers — read this first
What exactly is an attar? Fragrance oil without alcohol. A SOSA attar is an alcohol-free, DPG-free blend on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune and supplied with a dab applicator rather than a spray. Because there is no alcohol to flash off, it does not project across a room; it sits close to the skin and stays there for six to eight hours. Bottles are small — 3ml, 6ml and 12ml — and a 3ml lasts a long time when you are applying a dab rather than spraying. That small, close register is the reason it suits a teacher gift.

Is a 3ml attar too small to give as a gift? No. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 is a proper gift, not a sample, and the size is a feature rather than a compromise. Because an attar is dabbed rather than sprayed, a 3ml bottle lasts far longer than the number suggests. It also keeps the gift in the right register for a teacher: real, considered, and not a statement that somebody then has to respond to. A 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is a lot of fragrance to hand somebody whose taste you are still guessing at.

Which SOSA attar should I choose for a teacher? If their taste runs light and clean, Adaa at ₹379 — bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, and the only one of the four with no oudh. If it runs warm or festive, Ameeri at ₹385, saffron and pink pepper over Taif rose and sandalwood. If they clearly enjoy fragrance and like depth, Mastani at ₹389 or Nawaab at ₹399, which is the deepest of the four. If you genuinely cannot guess, the trio at ₹1,055 puts three 3ml bottles in one box and lets them decide.
The short answer
Short answer: An attar is alcohol-free fragrance oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, applied with a dab applicator and lasting six to eight hours on skin. It sits close rather than projecting, which keeps a worn gift in a modest register. A 3ml at Rs 379 to Rs 399 is a real gift; the trio at Rs 1,055 answers the case where you cannot guess.
The pick: SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml if their taste runs light, or the SOSA Attar Trio at ₹1,055 if you cannot guess. Only give a worn fragrance where the relationship carries one.
Next step: Tell us what the teacher is like and how long you have known them, and we will name one attar rather than four. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
What is actually in the bottleAlcohol-free oil, not a sprayDab applicator: a little, exactly where you want itSix to eight hours on skin, close in3ml is a real gift, not a sampleThe trio when you would rather not guess
The small, close register is the whole argument for an attar as a teacher gift, rather than anything about tradition.
Straight answer
What is an attar, and why does it suit a teacher better than a bottle of perfume?
Start with what is in the bottle. An attar is fragrance in oil rather than in alcohol. A SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free, blended on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune, and supplied with a dab applicator instead of a sprayer. Those are ingredient facts and nothing more — we make no skin, allergy or safety claim from them, and a patch test on the inner arm is the only advice we give. The behaviour follows from the chemistry. Alcohol is what carries a conventional perfume outwards and upwards; without it, the oil stays where it is put. An attar sits close to the skin and lasts six to eight hours there, which is a different experience from a scent that announces somebody's arrival. That closeness is the whole argument for an attar as a teacher gift. A worn fragrance is already a personal object, and the register of the thing decides whether it lands as considerate or as too much. A small bottle that is dabbed on a wrist and noticed by the person wearing it is about as modest as a worn gift gets. A large bottle of anything is a statement, and a statement is the wrong shape for somebody who teaches you. The sizes are 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, and the 3ml is not a compromise. At ₹379 to ₹399 it is a real gift, and because you are applying a dab rather than spraying, it lasts considerably longer than three millilitres sounds. A 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 is generous and suits a tutor or mentor of many years. A 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is a great deal of fragrance to give somebody whose taste you are still guessing at. Choosing between the four is a question of register. Adaa is the lightest and the only one with no oudh in it. Ameeri is saffron and Taif rose over soft oudh, warm and festive. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose and Mysore sandalwood, with real depth. Nawaab is the deepest of the four — white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron and aged tobacco leaf. If you cannot place them, the trio at ₹1,055 puts Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box, and three small bottles is an honest admission that you would rather they chose. One caution. Give a worn fragrance only where the relationship carries it, and where nobody is currently marking your work. Otherwise give the room. To talk it through first, ask us to help choose a gift.
An attar is alcohol-free oil, dabbed rather than sprayed, sitting close to the skin for six to eight hours. That modest register is why a 3ml bottle works as a teacher gift.
If their taste runs light and clean, SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml — Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four, and the only one with no oudh at all.

What to buy, and in what size

Sizing, plainly. A 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is the size I would give a teacher — it is a real gift and it lasts, because a dab applicator uses very little. A 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 suits a tutor or mentor of many years. A 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is generous to the point of being a statement, and I would not give one to somebody whose taste I was guessing at.

Where I would start with a teacher
SOSA Adaa Attar
Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four and the only one with no oudh. 3ml ₹379, 6ml ₹669, 12ml ₹1,149. Alcohol-free and DPG-free oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier; six to eight hours on skin.

The object, the size, the choice

What an attar is, how to give one, and which of the four goes where.

1
First, the object itself
Oil, not alcohol, and a dab rather than a spray
A SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free fragrance oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune and fitted with a dab applicator. Alcohol is what throws a conventional perfume outwards; take it away and the oil stays where it is placed, sitting close to the skin for six to eight hours rather than travelling across a room. Practically, that means a wrist, the inside of an elbow or the base of the throat, one dab, not rubbed in. It also means the bottles are small and still last, because you are never spraying three or four times. Alcohol-free and DPG-free describe what is in the bottle; they are not skin, allergy or safety claims, and a patch test on the inner arm is the only advice we give.
Tip: Tell the recipient it is dabbed, not sprayed, and that one application is plenty. People used to sprays often use four times what an attar needs on the first day.
2
Second, the size
3ml is a real gift, and 12ml is a statement
The sizes are 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, and the smallest is not a token. At ₹379 to ₹399 a 3ml is a proper gift, and because of the applicator it lasts far longer than the figure suggests. More to the point, it holds the right register for a teacher: considered, but not something anybody has to respond to. A 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 is generous and suits a relationship of years — a tutor who has come to the house twice a week, a mentor you still speak to. A 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is a lot of fragrance to hand somebody whose taste you are guessing at, and it reads as a statement rather than as thanks. If you want to spend more without going up in size, the trio is the better shape.

3
Third, which of the four
Place the taste, or hand the choosing back
Adaa is the lightest — bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, on white musk and cedarwood, with no oudh at all. It is the safest of the four for somebody whose taste you only half know. Ameeri is warm and festive: saffron and pink pepper over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh and amber. Mastani has real depth without being heavy — litchi and pink pepper over night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose, on Mysore sandalwood, oudh and vanilla. Nawaab is the deepest, with white royal oud, sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf. Nawaab is oud-led, Ameeri and Mastani carry a little, and Adaa has none. If placing a taste feels like guesswork, the trio at ₹1,055 is not a cop-out — three small bottles is simply an honest way to let them pick.
The SOSA principle
A 3ml attar is the rare worn gift that is genuinely modest. It is real enough to count and small enough that nobody has to work out how to respond to it.
That is a point about register and not a claim about how a fragrance affects anybody who wears one.
SOSA Mastani Attar
For a teacher who clearly enjoys fragrance: SOSA Mastani — litchi and pink pepper over night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose, on Mysore sandalwood, oudh and vanilla. 3ml ₹389.

Which attar suits which teacher

The four attars set against the sort of taste each one suits, so you can place somebody without having to describe them.

The SOSA plan
Which attar suits which teacher
The attar Who it suits
SOSA Adaa AttarAdaa — bergamot, cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac
Light and clean tastes, and anyone you only half know. The only one of the four with no oudh.
Ameeri — saffron, pink pepper, Taif rose, sandalwood
Warm, festive or traditional tastes. Soft oudh and amber underneath, but nothing heavy on top.
Mastani — night jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood
Someone who clearly enjoys fragrance and likes depth without weight. A good choice for a creative teacher.
Nawaab — white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, tobacco
The deepest of the four, and oud-led. Only where you know that is the register they actually wear.

Before buying anything worn at all, the perfume question gives the three-question test for whether the relationship carries one. If it does not, a reed diffuser is the gift that assumes nothing about the person. SOSA is an independent Indian brand; nothing here is affiliated with any perfume house, designer or school, and no institution is a SOSA customer.

SOSA Nawaab Attar
The deepest of the four: SOSA Nawaab — white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf on amber and leather. 3ml ₹399.
Place the taste, or hand it back
A 3ml attar from ₹379, or the trio at ₹1,055 when you would rather they chose
See the SOSA Adaa Attar Book a scenting plan
Without alcohol there is nothing to carry the scent outwards, so an attar stays where it is put. For a gift to somebody who teaches you, that restraint is the entire point.

Some limits worth stating. An attar is a worn gift, so give one only where the relationship carries it and where nobody is currently marking your work or supervising your research. Fragrance sensitivity is real; no SOSA product is described as hypoallergenic or as safe for sensitive individuals, alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts rather than skin claims, and a patch test on the inner arm is the only advice we give. Longevity is six to eight hours on skin. Many institutions have their own rules about gifts to staff, so check yours. We make no promise about delivery timing, gift wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal

The reason I make attars at all is that oil behaves differently from alcohol, and I like what it does. A blend in oil unfolds more slowly and stays where you put it, so the person wearing it gets most of the experience and the room gets very little. In a gifting context that turns out to be useful in a way I did not anticipate when I started, because it keeps a personal gift from becoming a public one.

People underestimate a 3ml bottle because the number looks small next to a hundred-millilitre spray. It is not a fair comparison. A dab applicator puts a tiny amount exactly where you want it, and nobody dabs four times. I would rather somebody gave a teacher a 3ml with a letter than a 12ml with a card, and not only for reasons of cost — the smaller bottle is simply the better-mannered gift.

To be clear: this is a gifting and ambience decision and not a claim — no therapeutic, medical or mood claim is made about any SOSA attar, and no product masks an odour or treats anything at all. What a gift means belongs to whoever receives it, and their own judgement about what they put on their skin overrides anything I suggest. Alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts, not skin or allergy claims; patch-test. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is an attar?
Fragrance in oil rather than in alcohol. A SOSA attar is an alcohol-free, DPG-free blend on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune and supplied with a dab applicator rather than a spray. Without alcohol to carry it outwards it sits close to the skin and lasts six to eight hours there. Bottles are 3ml, 6ml and 12ml.
Is 3ml big enough to give as a gift?
Yes. At Rs 379 to Rs 399 a 3ml attar is a real gift rather than a sample, and because it is dabbed rather than sprayed it lasts much longer than the figure suggests. It also keeps a worn gift in the right register for a teacher: considered, but not something anyone has to work out how to respond to.
How long does it last on skin?
Six to eight hours. It sits close in rather than projecting across a room, which is what happens when there is no alcohol to carry it outwards. One dab on a wrist or the inside of an elbow is plenty, and it should not be rubbed in.
Which SOSA attar is best for a teacher?
Adaa at Rs 379 if their taste runs light and clean, since it is the lightest of the four and the only one with no oudh. Ameeri at Rs 385 if it runs warm or festive. Mastani at Rs 389 or Nawaab at Rs 399 for somebody who clearly enjoys depth. If you cannot place them at all, the trio at Rs 1,055 lets them choose.
Do any of them contain oud?
Nawaab is oud-led. Ameeri and Mastani carry a little underneath. Adaa has none at all, which is why it is the one I suggest when you are unsure whether somebody likes oud. If you know they do not, Adaa is the only one of the four to consider.
SOSA Attar Trio
