The eye and the nose file separate reports, and in a showroom that has been photographed for a magazine the two reports often disagree. The eye says walnut, brass, black glass. The nose says cleaning fluid and cardboard. The visitor believes the nose, because the nose is the one that cannot be styled. Closing that gap is two jobs, and only the second one involves buying anything.
Quick answers — read this first
My showroom looks premium but doesn't smell premium - what should I change? Two things, in order. First, find and remove every smell the fit-out did not choose: new plastic, warm dust on the tops of tall units, cardboard from the back store, air sealed overnight, and the cleaning products the floor is mopped with. Do this by a nose-only audit at five in the afternoon. Second, once the floor smells of nothing, add one dry register held low - cedar, sage, tea, light woods, or lemon-mint on a white floor - set for the advisor who stands there all day.
Why does a floor that looks like a home not smell like one? Because finishes do nothing to the air. A well-kept home smells of clean dry surfaces and moved air, with almost nothing else. A showroom is a working floor that receives deliveries, runs warm units, stores cardboard, gets mopped with a scented floor cleaner and is sealed overnight, and each of those puts a smell in the air that a home does not have. The look was designed; the smell was left to accumulate. That is the whole gap.
What does a premium floor actually run on? For a studio under about 750 sq ft, one Mountain Breeze reed (Rs 849) or Morning Freshness reed (Rs 749) at the desk, or a SOSA Sukoon (Rs 1,899). From about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999): waterless, on a timer, key-locked at a level the team has stopped noticing. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting; SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance.
The short answer
Short answer: the look was designed and the smell was left to accumulate. Close the gap with a nose-only audit that names and removes every smell the fit-out did not choose - plastic, dust, cardboard, overnight air, cleaning fluid - and then, once the floor smells of nothing, one dry register held so low the advisor has stopped noticing it.
The pick: after the audit passes: a Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) or Morning Freshness reed (₹749) at the desk of a studio, and one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft. Before the audit passes, nothing.
Next step: do the five-o'clock audit this week, write down what you smelt, and ask for a showroom scenting plan with the list attached - we will tell you what to remove and, only then, what to add.
My showroom looks premium but doesn't smell premium - what should I change?
Change the order in which you have been thinking about it. Most owners who ask this have already looked at fragrances, and the fragrance is the second job. The first is to understand why a floor that was designed to read as a home does not smell like one, and the answer is that the look was designed and the smell was left to accumulate. A well-kept home smells of clean, dry surfaces and air that has moved - almost nothing, in other words. A showroom is a working room. It receives deliveries and unboxes them, runs warm display units that lift dust off their vents, keeps cardboard in a back store with the door open, gets mopped every night with a floor cleaner that has its own perfume, and is sealed with the AC off for ten hours. Every one of those puts a smell in the air that a home does not have, and none of them is visible in the photograph. The visitor's eye reads walnut, brass and black glass, the nose reads lemon floor cleaner over cardboard, and the visitor believes the nose, because the nose is the sense that cannot be styled. So the first job is an audit, and the method matters. Do it with the nose only, at five in the afternoon after a full day's trading, starting from the specification table at the far end of the floor and walking towards the door. Write down every smell you can name. In my experience the list is always some subset of five: new plastic, warm dust, cardboard, stale overnight air, and cleaning product. Each has a fix that costs nothing, and the electronics-store page gives them one by one. The floor-cleaner one is the surprise for most owners: a pine or lemon "fresh" cleaner mopped over two thousand square feet of stone every night is the strongest fragrance in the building, and it was never chosen. Switch to an unscented one. When the audit list is empty - when the far table at five smells of nothing - the second job begins, and it is smaller than the first. Add one dry register, held low. For a floor of wood, stone and dark glass, cedar, sage, a little tea and light woods; for a white, handleless, glass-fronted one, a clean lemon-and-mint. Nothing sweet, nothing amber-heavy, and in a kitchen-appliance showroom nothing edible, because the hob and the coffee counter own those smells and stay unscented. Set the level for the advisor who stands on the floor nine hours, not for the visitor: noticed at the first display, forgotten by the specification table. Hard surfaces bounce fragrance and there is no fabric to absorb it, so an appliance floor sits a step below other retail. In the SOSA range that is a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 or a Morning Freshness reed at ₹749 at the desk of a studio under about 750 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 for a single room, and from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, on a timer, key-locked so the level cannot drift upward. What a premium showroom should smell like describes that register in full. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music: SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish, and it is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. Ask for a showroom scenting plan with your audit list attached.
The look was designed; the smell accumulated. Audit with the nose at five in the afternoon from the far table, remove what you did not choose - plastic, dust, cardboard, overnight air, scented floor cleaner - then add one dry register held low. A reed (Rs 749-849) for a studio; one Vaayu (Rs 11,999) from about 1,500 sq ft.
Once the audit passes, one SOSA Vaayu - waterless, timer and key-lock, ₹11,999 - carries one dry register across a connected floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft. For a studio, a reed at the desk is the whole answer.
Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar - the driest register SOSA makes, and the one that reads as a well-kept home rather than a candle shop. Alcohol-free, six fibre reeds, flip weekly. 50ml Rs 849 lasts 6-8 weeks at a desk; 130ml Rs 1,349 lasts 14-18 weeks. Reaches one desk zone. On a white, glass floor use Morning Freshness instead.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft on one unit, Rs 11,999. No water, so no added moisture and no residue; 1h/4h/8h/24h timer; adjustable intensity; key-lock so the level the team found stays found; under 38dB; wall or HVAC mount so the source sits where the AC carries it. One machine per volume of air.
1000m³ coverage on a single unit, Rs 11,999, adjustable intensity, 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, key-lock, under 38dB. The four 100ml bottles in the box are the supply; confirm refill availability with SOSA. Placed on the wall the AC supply crosses, set from the far table, locked.
Do this at five in the afternoon, nose only, starting from the far table. Each smell below has a fix that costs nothing, and the floor is not ready for the register until the list is empty.
1
Scented floor cleaner
The strongest fragrance in the building, and nobody chose it
This is the one that surprises owners. The floor is mopped every night with a pine or lemon cleaner sold as "fresh", and two thousand square feet of stone or tile mopped nightly makes that cleaner the dominant smell of the showroom by a wide margin - it is there at opening, it is there at five, and it reads unmistakably as institutional: a hospital corridor, a mall toilet. It was never a decision; it was whatever the cleaning contractor brought. Switch to an unscented cleaner and the floor changes character within a week. Then, if a lemon note is wanted, it is added deliberately and low with a Morning Freshness reed, which is a different thing entirely from a bucket of it.
Test: smell the mop bucket. If you can name the fragrance, that is what your showroom smells of at ten in the morning.
2
New plastic and cardboard
Unboxed at the display, stored behind the plinth
A unit unboxed at its display position gives the floor two days of film, foam and fresh moulding; a back store with the door open shares its cardboard with the floor all day; stock kept under a display plinth cannot be seen and can certainly be smelt. All three read as warehouse, and a warehouse is the opposite of a home. The fixes are habits: unbox in the back store, film and foam into a closed bin, a day standing before display; boxes flattened and off site the same day; the back-store door shut. The plastic-and-packaging page has the full routine.
Rule: if a visitor could find a box on your sales floor, they can smell one from the door.
3
Warm dust
The tops of the tall units, and the vents nobody wipes
Running display units are warm, warm air rises off their vents, and it carries whatever dust sits on the vents and on the tops of the tall units - above eye level, off the cleaning schedule. The result is the faint hot-dust note that reads as tired, and it is the reason a floor can be spotless at eye level and still smell like an old electronics shop. Tops and vents go on the weekly list, AC filters on the monthly one. Why a large store smells dusty even after cleaning is the whole of that problem on one page.
When the audit list is empty, the register for a floor of wood, stone and dark glass is Mountain Breeze: pine, sage, cedar, dry.
With the AC off and the doors locked, everything on the floor releases into a sealed box for ten hours, and whoever opens the door at ten gets it at once. The AC recirculates and does not clear it; a fragrance switched on at nine sits on top of it. The fix is a fresh-air hour before trading - the damper open or the doors propped - written into the opening checklist. Why a showroom smells stale in the morning is that routine in full, and ventilation versus fragrance puts it first in the order for a new floor.
Rule: audit the morning as well as the afternoon. A floor that passes at five and fails at ten has a routine problem, not a fragrance one.
5
The register
One dry scent, held low, set for the advisor
Only when the list is empty does this card apply. What the nose should find on a premium floor is what it finds in a well-kept home: almost nothing, and what there is, dry. Cedar, sage, a little tea and light woods on wood, stone and dark glass; a clean lemon-and-mint on white lacquer and glass. Nothing sweet or powdery, and in a kitchen-appliance showroom nothing edible, because the hob and coffee counter own those smells and stay unscented. Set it for the advisor who stands there nine hours: noticed at the first display, forgotten by the specification table, un-nameable at the desk. Hard surfaces amplify, so the level sits a step below other retail, and the key-lock on the Vaayu keeps it there. How strong fragrance should be in an experience centre is the level on its own page.
The Vaayu carries the register across a connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft - waterless, on a timer, locked at the level the team found.
Eye versus nose: what each finish says and what the air says
The same floor read by the two senses. The left column is what the fit-out was designed to say; the right is what the nose usually reports, and what closes the gap.
The SOSA audit
What the eye reads, what the nose reads, and what closes the gap
The eye reads
The nose reads - and the fix
Walnut, stone, dark glass - a kitchen you could cook in
Lemon floor cleaner and a trace of cardboard. Fix: unscented cleaner, back-store door shut. Then dry cedar and sage, low - Mountain Breeze. View →
White lacquer, handleless, glass - a minimal European kitchen
New plastic from the last delivery and hot dust off the vents. Fix: unbox in the back, tops and vents weekly. Then a clean lemon-mint, lowest of all - Morning Freshness. View →
A living room with a screen the size of a wall
Warm circuitry and the sealed night. Fix: fresh-air hour before opening, vents cleaned. Then a trace of the floor's register carried in from the corridor - nothing placed in the room.
A live kitchen or a coffee counter
Whatever was last cooked or brewed - which is correct. Nothing is added here, ever. Extraction during and after; the demonstration owns this air.
The whole floor, once the list is empty
One register, one level, one source on the wall the AC supply crosses - a reed at the desk below about 750 sq ft; one Vaayu from about 1,500 sq ft. View →
Audit first, then one dry register held low - sized to the floor
Send us the audit list and a floor plan with the live kitchen and AC returns marked. We will say what to remove, and only then which machine, if any, and where.
One register, three ways to deliver it, chosen by connected floor. Nothing here goes in before the five-o'clock audit passes. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA specification for a floor that looks premium
After the audit: one dry register, sized to the floor
Nothing on this page is added until the audit list is empty. Between 750 and 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu is bought for control, no water and distribution - never for coverage. The four 100ml bottles in the Vaayu box are the supply; confirm refill availability with SOSA. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music, with no claim about footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish. It works alongside ventilation, cleaning and extraction, never instead of them. Any live kitchen or coffee counter stays unscented.Ask for a showroom scenting plan with the audit list attached.

A note from Sonal
The sentence "it looks premium but it doesn't smell premium" is almost always said by someone holding a phone with a photograph on it, and I always ask them to put the phone down and tell me what the floor smelt of at five that afternoon. Usually they cannot say, because nobody has ever smelt the floor on purpose. When they go back and do it, the list is the same five things it always is, and the one that embarrasses people most is the floor cleaner, because it is the strongest fragrance in the building and it came in a bucket.
So the first job is the audit, and it is done with the nose, from the far table, at the end of a trading day, and it ends with a list of things to remove. Nothing on that list is a purchase. The more-luxurious page makes the case that luxury is what is absent, and ventilation versus fragrance gives the order for a new floor. Only when the list is empty do I talk about the register, and then I talk about it quietly: cedar, sage, tea; lemon-mint if the floor is white; nothing sweet; set for the advisor, not the visitor.
The purchase is the last and smallest part. A Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed at the desk of a studio; one Vaayu at ₹11,999 on a timer with the lock on from about 1,500 sq ft; any live kitchen or coffee counter left unscented. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music; SOSA makes no claim that it moves footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance on display. It is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How do I audit what my showroom actually smells of?
With the nose only, at five in the afternoon after a full day's trading, starting at the specification table at the far end and walking towards the door. Write down every smell you can name. It will be some subset of five - new plastic, warm dust, cardboard, stale overnight air and scented floor cleaner - and each has a fix that costs nothing. Repeat the audit at ten in the morning; a floor that passes at five and fails at ten has an opening-routine problem.
Can the floor cleaner really be the reason my showroom does not smell premium?
Very often, yes. A pine or lemon cleaner mopped nightly over two thousand square feet of stone becomes the dominant smell of the building, present at opening and still there at five, and it reads as institutional - a hospital corridor rather than a home. It was never chosen; it was whatever the contractor brought. Switch to an unscented cleaner and the floor changes character within a week. Any lemon note is then added deliberately and low.
Which register makes an appliance floor read as premium rather than as a shop?
The one a well-kept home has, which is almost nothing and, where there is something, dry. Cedar, sage, a little tea and light woods on wood, stone and dark glass; a clean lemon-and-mint on white lacquer and glass. Nothing sweet, powdery or amber-heavy, and in a kitchen-appliance showroom nothing edible, because the hob and the coffee counter own those smells. In the SOSA range that is Mountain Breeze at Rs 849 or Morning Freshness at Rs 749.
Is it enough to add a good fragrance without doing the audit first?
No. A fragrance adds to whatever is already in the air, so a good register laid over floor cleaner and cardboard produces cedar-and-cleaner-and-cardboard, which reads as a cover-up rather than as a home. The audit removes what the fit-out did not choose; the register adds one thing it did. In that order the result reads as premium; in the other order it reads as trying too hard. Do the audit first and spend nothing until the list is empty.
What machine carries the register across a premium floor once the audit passes?
It depends on connected floor, not on the fit-out. Under about 750 sq ft, a Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed at the desk, or a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899 for one closed room, with the honest note that the Sukoon adds a little moisture. From about 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, waterless, on a timer, key-locked at a level set from the far table for the advisor who stands there all day, on the wall the AC supply crosses.
After the audit - the register, machine-carried: SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999, waterless, timer and key-lock, for the sales floor.
