If your reed diffuser fills a shelf but not a room, you have hit the honest limit of reeds - they give a gentle, passive throw by design. A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser is the stronger, adjustable option. I make both, so this is a fair comparison, not a pitch against reeds.
Quick answers — read this first
Why is my reed diffuser not strong enough? Reeds work by passive wicking - the liquid climbs the sticks and evaporates slowly, which gives a soft, always-there scent but a limited throw. In a large or airy room, that gentle output simply cannot fill the space. It is a design limit, not a fault.

What is a stronger option than a reed diffuser? A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser. It actively lifts fragrance on a fine mist, so the throw is stronger and, importantly, adjustable - you can dial it up for a big room or down for a quiet evening. SOSA's Sukoon and Megh cover larger spaces well.

Should I stop using reed diffusers? Not at all, and SOSA makes them too. Reeds are lovely for a bathroom, a small hall or a bedside - flame-free, no electricity, quietly continuous. The ultrasonic diffuser is the upgrade when you need a bigger, controllable throw, not a replacement everywhere.
The short answer
Why reeds feel weak: passive wicking gives a soft, limited throw - fine for small rooms, not large ones.
Stronger option: a cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser - active mist, stronger and adjustable throw.
SOSA makes both: reed diffusers (₹749) and ultrasonic diffusers (from ₹799) - honest either way.
Upgrade, not bash: keep reeds for small spaces; add a diffuser where you need more reach.

Straight answer
My reed diffuser isn't strong enough - what's a better option?
A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser is the stronger, adjustable option. A reed diffuser scents by passive wicking, which gives a soft, always-there throw but cannot fill a large or airy room - that is the honest design limit of reeds, not a fault in yours. An ultrasonic diffuser actively lifts fragrance on a fine mist, so the throw is stronger and you can dial it up for a big room or down for a quiet evening. In the SOSA range, a Sukoon suits a bedroom and a Megh fills a living room. I make reed diffusers too, though, so keep your reeds for small spaces like a bathroom or bedside; the ultrasonic diffuser is an upgrade for reach, not a reason to abandon reeds everywhere.
Reeds throw gently by design; a cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser gives a stronger, adjustable throw for larger rooms. SOSA makes both - upgrade for reach, keep reeds for small spaces.

Why reeds throw gently - and when that is not enough

I make reed diffusers and I love them, so let me be fair about their limit. A reed diffuser works by passive wicking: the fragrance liquid climbs the rattan sticks and evaporates into the air on its own, with nothing pushing it. That is exactly what makes reeds so pleasant - a soft, steady, flame-free scent that is simply always there. But it also caps how far the scent can reach.

Passive throw vs active throw
A reed diffuser has a passive throw - scent evaporates gently and drifts, suiting small, still rooms. A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser has an active throw - it lifts fragrance on a fine mist you can turn up or down, so it reaches further and you control the strength.

So if your reeds fill the shelf they sit on but not the room, nothing is wrong with them - you have simply asked a gentle, passive scenter to cover a space bigger than its reach. In a small bathroom or beside a bed, reeds are perfect. In an open living room or a large hall, they were never going to fill it, and no amount of extra sticks changes that by much.

Reeds are quiet by design, and that quietness is the whole charm in a small space. The mismatch is only the room size - the answer is a stronger, adjustable scenter where you need reach.

The upgrade: a cool-mist diffuser you can dial up

A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser is the honest upgrade for throw. It vibrates a plate to lift a fine mist that carries fragrance actively into the room, and - this is the key part - the output is adjustable. Turn it up to fill a large space, down for a quiet evening. That control is exactly what a reed cannot give you.

Aspect Reed diffuser Ultrasonic diffuser
Throw Gentle, passive, fixed Stronger, active, adjustable
Best room Bathroom, bedside, small hall Bedroom, living room, large hall
Power None - always on USB or mains, cool mist
From ₹749 ₹799 (Boond)
A fair point, not a myth

"So reeds are the weaker product." Not weaker - gentler, and made for different rooms. I sell both honestly. A reed in a small bathroom is a lovelier, lower-fuss choice than a diffuser. The diffuser wins only where you need more reach and control. Use each where it belongs.

If you go the diffuser route, match it to the room: a Sukoon for a bedroom, a Megh for a living room. Run the water-based Hotel Collection in it - and only that, since raw oils clog the misting plate. And keep your reeds for the small spaces they scent beautifully. The best homes often use both: reeds where the room is small and still, a diffuser where you need to fill and control the scent.

Reeds are gentle by design. When a room needs more, a cool-mist diffuser gives you a stronger throw you can dial up.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ultrasonic diffuser stronger than a reed diffuser?
Yes, and adjustable. A reed diffuser throws scent gently and passively; an ultrasonic diffuser actively lifts fragrance on a mist you can turn up or down. For a large or airy room, the diffuser fills the space far better.
Does SOSA still recommend reed diffusers?
Absolutely - we make them, from ₹749. Reeds are ideal for small, still rooms like a bathroom, bedside or compact hall, where their gentle, flame-free scent is a pleasure and needs no power. The diffuser is the answer only when you need more reach.
Can I make my reed diffuser stronger?
A little - flip the reeds regularly, use more sticks, keep it out of draughts and top up the oil. But there is a ceiling to passive throw. If it still cannot fill the room, the room is simply larger than a reed can cover.
Which diffuser should I upgrade to?
Match it to the room: a Sukoon (₹1799, 500ml) for a bedroom, a Megh (₹3499, 6L) for a living room. Both give a stronger, adjustable throw than any reed, and each ships with three water-based fragrances.
Can I use my reed diffuser oil in an ultrasonic diffuser?
No. Reed diffuser oil is solvent-based and made for wicking, not misting, and it can clog the ultrasonic plate. Use SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection in the diffuser - it is formulated to mist cleanly.
