A rented flat can get most of the way to a boutique hotel feeling, and the useful framing for a tenant is that everything which actually works is reversible - which means it costs you nothing at the end of the tenancy and moves with you to the next place. Step one is removing what was there before you, and it comes first because fragrance placed over an inherited smell does not replace it. The two sit alongside each other and are read as two things, which is exactly the effect people mean when they say a flat does not feel like theirs yet. Soft and porous surfaces are what hold and slowly release. Curtains are the biggest single carrier and usually the cheapest thing to wash or replace outright - and replacing them is also the single most effective decorative change a tenant can make, which is worth knowing if the flat came with something unfortunate. The mattress is second: if it came with the flat, air it properly, in sunlight if that is possible, or at minimum wash everything on it and ventilate the room for several days. Cupboard and wardrobe interiors are third and the most overlooked: empty them completely, wipe them out, throw away the old shelf paper - which is nearly always doing more harm than good - and leave the doors open for several days so the interior air genuinely exchanges. Upholstered furniture that came with the flat needs the same treatment. None of this costs meaningful money and all of it does more than any bottle. Step two is the plumbing, and it explains something most tenants notice and few diagnose. Run every tap and flush every WC for twenty seconds, and repeat every few days in whichever bathroom gets less use. Each drain has a U-bend holding water that seals it from the room, and in a flat that stood empty between tenancies those traps have dried out - so the drains are open directly into the rooms. That is why so many rented flats smell wrong on day one in a way that seems to come from nowhere, and no fragrance at any price covers it. While you are at it, check that the bathroom and kitchen extractors actually pull, by holding a tissue against them; a fan that spins without extracting is common and effectively decorative, and an extractor that does not extract is the most expensive thing to live without in a compact flat. Report any damp to the landlord in writing straight away - it protects your deposit and it is the only real fix, because damp is in the structure rather than the air. Step three is the linen, and this is the highest-value boutique-hotel move available to a tenant. Fresh, well-laundered bedding, pillowcases and towels are a large part of what anybody recognises as a hotel smell, and unlike the paint, the flooring and the kitchen, the linen is yours rather than the landlord's. Washing it more often than feels necessary, drying it fully and fast, and storing it dry will do more for the impression than any product. Good towels that dry quickly and get changed often are the single most hotel-like thing in a rented bathroom. Step four is the fragrance, and it is deliberately last and deliberately modest. Three notes specific to renting. Nothing recommended here is drilled, wired, fixed or permanent, so nothing touches your deposit and all of it moves with you to the next flat, which is not true of anything installed. If the landlord left a plug-in air freshener behind, remove it: it follows the wiring rather than the room and will fight whatever you choose. And if you share the flat, each bedroom belongs entirely to whoever sleeps in it - their scent, their level, from a source they can move or cap without asking anybody or explaining why, because somebody who pays for a room cannot leave it. The shared space runs at the lowest level anybody would still choose rather than an average.
