There is a number people arrive at by counting rooms and a number that turns out to be right, and in a 1BHK they are almost never the same. Counting rooms gives you five, because it counts the passage and the balcony and the kitchen you never shut. Counting doors you actually close, plus one for the open zone, gives you three — and three is the answer for most 1BHKs in the country.
Quick answers — read this first
How many? Three. One 130ml for the open living-dining zone, one 50ml for the bedroom, one 50ml for the bathroom. ₹2,847.

Two? Right for a studio, or for a first month. The Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 covers the bedroom and the bathroom.

Four? Only if your kitchen has a door you close. Then the fourth is a Morning Freshness 130ml at ₹1,249 — ₹4,096 in total.

The passage gets nothing. Four steps of moving air will not hold a fragrance no matter what you stand in it.
The short answer
Short answer: three. The rule is one bottle per door you routinely shut, plus one for the open living zone. A standard 1BHK shuts a bedroom door and a bathroom door, which gives two, and the living-dining zone gives the third. ₹2,847 in total.
The pick: a Garden Bloom 130ml at ₹1,299 for the living zone, an Evening Calm 50ml at ₹799 for the bedroom, a Morning Freshness 50ml at ₹749 for the bathroom. Six reeds, three reeds, two reeds respectively.
Do not buy: five or six bottles for a 1BHK. Past four, a flat this size stops smelling of a fragrance and starts smelling of fragrance — the individual scents stop being legible and the whole place reads as a shop. More bottles is not more luxury; it is the fastest way to make a small home feel airless.
Straight answer
How many reed diffusers do you need for a 1BHK?
1. One for the open living-dining zone. Whatever its size, and even if the kitchen runs into it. This is the only room in a 1BHK usually above 150 sq ft, so it takes a 130ml at ₹1,299 on all six reeds. A second bottle at the other end of the same open zone does not double the effect — it just gives you two strong spots and a gap in between.

2. One for the bedroom. A shut door makes the bedroom a genuinely separate body of air, and nothing in the living room reaches it. A 50ml at ₹799 on three reeds, not six.

3. One for the bathroom. The room people leave until last and notice most. A 50ml at ₹749 on two reeds runs close to three months in a 50 sq ft bathroom.

4. So three, at ₹2,847 — and two is a legitimate answer, not a compromise. If the kitchen is open and the budget is this month's rather than next quarter's, the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 buys the bedroom and the bathroom, which are the two rooms you are still in.

5. Four only when the kitchen has a door. A closed Indian kitchen is a fragrance problem of its own and citrus is the only family that works alongside cooking. Morning Freshness 130ml at ₹1,249 takes the total to ₹4,096.

TL;DR: a 1BHK needs three reed diffusers — one per door you shut, plus one for the open living zone. That is ₹2,847. Two at ₹1,498 is the right answer for a studio or a first month; four at ₹4,096 only if the kitchen has a door. Nothing goes in the passage.
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo set
The two-bottle answer
Day & Night Duo · 2 × 50ml ₹1,498
Morning Freshness for the bathroom, Evening Calm for the bedside — the two rooms in a 1BHK where you are stationary long enough for a reed diffuser to register. Saves ₹50 against the same two bottles bought singly. Also in 2 × 130ml at ₹2,498. Add Garden Bloom 130ml later for the living zone.

Count doors, not rooms — and certainly not square feet

Square footage is the wrong unit for a reed diffuser and it is worth being blunt about why. A machine such as the Sukoon is rated in area because it is actively pushing mist into a volume of air; if you double the volume, you need more machine. A reed diffuser pushes nothing. Oil climbs six fibre sticks and evaporates off the ends, and what you get is a soft radius around the bottle rather than a filled room. Doubling the floor area of a room does not weaken a reed diffuser very much at all — it just means more of the room lies outside the radius. Which makes the useful question not "how big is my flat" but "how many separate places do I need a radius in".

Doors are the cleanest proxy for that, because a shut door is an absolute barrier to a passive diffuser. Nothing you put in a 1BHK living room reaches the bedroom once the bedroom door is closed, and nothing reaches the bathroom ever. So: walk the flat, shut everything you normally shut, and count. Bedroom, one. Bathroom, two. Then add one for whatever is left open — the living-dining zone, including the kitchen if it runs into it. Three. If your kitchen has a door, four. If you live in a studio with no bedroom door, two, because the sleeping end and the living end of one open space are two places you stop moving, not two rooms.

The passage does not enter the count and neither does the balcony. A 1BHK passage is three or four steps of constantly disturbed air with doorways off it, and a fragrance released there drains into whichever room is open. A balcony is outdoor air with a ceiling. Both are places a bottle looks lovely and does nothing, and in a flat this size the money is better spent finishing the three rooms properly than decorating a fourth surface.

The three decisions behind the number

1
DECISION ONE · IS YOUR KITCHEN OPEN OR CLOSED
This single fact moves the answer between three and four
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749 · ₹1,249An open kitchen is part of the living zone and needs no bottle of its own — one 130ml stood away from the hob does the whole connected space. A closed kitchen is a sealed room that generates its own strong smells daily, and it earns a fourth bottle: Morning Freshness 130ml at ₹1,249, because real cold-pressed lemon and peppermint sit alongside cooking rather than fighting it. A floral in a kitchen fights and loses. And no reed diffuser of any kind replaces an extractor — it works on the residue after cooking, not on the cooking.
The test: can you shut your kitchen off from the living room? If yes, you are a four-bottle flat.
2
DECISION TWO · WHETHER YOUR BEDROOM IS A ROOM OR AN END
A studio is a two-bottle home, not a small three-bottle one
If there is no bedroom door — a studio, or a 1BHK where the "bedroom" is really an alcove — you are not scenting two rooms at low strength. You are scenting one long room at two points, which is a different exercise. Put a 130ml near the entrance end where arrival happens, a 50ml near the bed, and use the same fragrance in both or two that share a note. The bathroom still gets its own, because it still has a door. That is two bottles plus the bathroom, and it is complete — a studio does not need topping up with a third floor-standing bottle in the middle.
The rule: no door between two areas means two placements of one scent, not two different scents.
3
DECISION THREE · HOW MANY IS TOO MANY
Four is the ceiling in a 1BHK, and it is a real ceiling
People rarely under-buy in this category; they over-buy, usually in a rush of enthusiasm after the first bottle works. Five or six reed diffusers in 500 square feet produces a flat where no individual fragrance is legible and the whole place has a slightly airless, retail quality. It also makes a mess of the doorways, where two scents meet and neither wins. If you want more presence, the honest lever is reeds rather than bottles — go from three reeds to five in a room that feels weak, or flip more often. That is free, reversible and finished in ten seconds. More bottles is the expensive way to make a small home worse.

Two, three or four — the count for your layout

A 1BHK runs roughly 450–650 sq ft, but the table below counts places rather than feet. Longevity assumes the reed counts shown and a flip every three to five days; heat, direct sun and a fan on high all shorten a bottle, and a sealed air-conditioned room lengthens it.

The three bottles that make the count — living, bedroom, bathroom
The SOSA principle
Every shut door in your flat is a wall a reed diffuser cannot climb. So the count is the doors, plus one.
Three in a standard 1BHK. Two in a studio. Four when the kitchen shuts. Never five — past that a small home stops smelling of a fragrance and starts smelling of fragrance.

If you are buying them one at a time, buy them in this order

Most people in a 1BHK do not buy three bottles on the same day, and there is no reason they should. The order matters more than the speed. Start with the bathroom at ₹749 — smallest room, most enclosed, most visited, and the one place a guest is alone with your fragrance for a full minute. It is the cheapest bottle in the range and it produces the largest visible change of any single purchase in a flat this size. Second, the bedroom at ₹799, because it is the room you spend the most consecutive hours in and the only one where fragrance changes how the end of a day feels. Third, the living zone at ₹1,299, which is the biggest bottle and the one most people buy first, largely because it is the room guests see.

Buying in that order also has a practical advantage: by the time you reach the ₹1,299 bottle you have lived with two SOSA fragrances for a couple of months and you know which register you actually like in your own air rather than in a description. People who buy the expensive bottle first are guessing; people who buy it third are choosing. If you would rather do it in one go, the two-then-one split works well — the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 for the two small rooms, then Garden Bloom 130ml when you are ready.

One last piece of arithmetic that changes how the whole thing feels. Year one is bottles; year two is refills, and the glass is designed to be reused rather than replaced. A 500ml refill at ₹3,499 works out at ₹7 per ml and gives you ten 50ml fills — about ₹350 a fill against ₹749 for a new bottle. Across a three-bottle 1BHK that is the difference between the setup being a purchase and being a habit, and it is the reason I would rather sell somebody three bottles they refill than five they replace.

Nobody has ever walked into a 500 square foot flat and thought: what this needs is a sixth bottle.

What each count actually costs

The arithmetic in full, with every total checked. There is no running electricity cost with reeds and no consumable except the oil, so what you see below is genuinely the whole outlay until the first refill six to eighteen weeks later, depending on the bottle.

Running cost 300ml refill ₹2,399 · 500ml ₹3,499 500ml is ten 50ml fills — roughly ₹350 a fill from ₹2,399
Honest notes before you buy: the duo sets save ₹50 against the same two bottles bought separately — Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 in 2 × 50ml, with 2 × 130ml versions at ₹2,498, ₹2,548 and ₹2,598. Buy a duo because you want both scents; the fifty rupees is a rounding error. Reed oil is a different formulation from the water-based Hotel Collection that goes into the ultrasonic Sukoon and Boond, and the two must not be swapped. A reed diffuser is an open bottle of oil — keep it above the reach of children and pets and off surfaces a spill would mark. Every purchase funds a girl's education through Nanhi Kali.

Reed Diffuser Refills · 300ml & 500ml ₹2,399 · ₹3,499
The glass bottle is made to be refilled, not replaced. A 500ml at ₹3,499 works out at ₹7 per ml — ten 50ml fills, or roughly ₹350 a fill against ₹749 for a new bottle. Available in all five fragrances. Refill at about 80% empty for steady projection, and change the reeds at the same time.

A note from Sonal

When somebody sends me a 1BHK floor plan and asks for a number, the number they have written on it is nearly always higher than the one I send back. Five is common. Six happens. In five hundred square feet.

I understand where it comes from. The first bottle works, the flat feels different, and the obvious conclusion is that more bottles will make it feel more different. It does not work that way. Fragrance in a small home is like light in a small room — one good source and one soft one is elegant; six is an interrogation. Past four bottles a 1BHK stops having a scent and starts having a smell, and the individual fragrances you chose so carefully become indistinguishable from each other.

So: three. One for the open zone, one behind each door you shut. ₹2,847, and if that is not this month, two at ₹1,498 with the living room to follow. Buy the bathroom one first, whatever else you do — it is the cheapest bottle we make and it changes the most. Every purchase funds a girl's education through Nanhi Kali. Every one, no asterisk.

Frequently asked questions

How many reed diffusers do you need for a 1BHK?
Three in most 1BHKs: one 130ml for the open living-dining zone, one 50ml for the bedroom, one 50ml for the bathroom — ₹2,847. Two at ₹1,498 is right for a studio or a first month, and four at ₹4,096 only if your kitchen has a door you close. The rule is one per door you shut, plus one for the open zone.
Is two reed diffusers enough for a 1BHK?
Enough to be worth having, yes — but put them in the bedroom and the bathroom rather than the living room and the bedroom. Those are the two rooms you are stationary in, and a passive diffuser only registers on someone who stays still near it. The living-dining bottle is the one to add third, not first. In a studio with no bedroom door, two is genuinely the complete answer.
Can I put two reed diffusers in the same room?
Only in a long open zone — a studio, or a living-dining that runs 25 feet end to end — where you place one near the entrance and one at the far end. In a normal-sized room two bottles does not double anything; it gives you one over-scented corner and a room that still fades at the edges. If a room feels weak, add reeds or flip more often before you add a second bottle.
How many reed diffusers are too many for a 1BHK?
Five. Past four bottles in roughly 500 sq ft the individual fragrances stop being legible, the doorways become places where two scents collide, and the flat takes on a slightly airless retail quality. The lever for more presence is reed count — three reeds to five in a weak room, or a more frequent flip — not more bottles.
Should I buy reed diffusers or one Sukoon for a 1BHK?
Different jobs, and the best 1BHK setups run both. Three reed bottles at ₹2,847 give you an always-on baseline in three rooms with no power and nothing to remember. A Sukoon at ₹1,899 gives you one room you can change on demand — before guests, after cooking, on a evening that needs to feel different. If you can only have one system in year one, reeds cover more of the flat for the money.
