A reed diffuser has exactly one honest control, and it sits in your hand: the number of sticks. In a living room — the biggest, most open room most of us scent — that control almost always wants to be turned all the way up.
Quick answer
For a living room, use all the sticks — usually six to eight. It is a large, open space, so you want the full throw one bottle can give.
More sticks = stronger and faster. Each reed is a wick; more wicks means more scent released. Fewer sticks are for small, enclosed spaces.
Still faint with all sticks in? The room is bigger than one reed can cover — add a second bottle or step up to a Sukoon / Vaayu.
The short version
Short answer: All of them. A living room is a maximum-throw job for a reed, so use every stick the bottle comes with.
People come to a reed diffuser expecting a knob or a setting, and there isn't one. That is the quiet genius of the format — the strength lives entirely in the sticks. Each reed is a length of porous rattan that draws the fragrant oil up from the bottle and lets it evaporate off its exposed surface. So the arithmetic is simple and physical: more sticks means more surface area giving up scent, which means a stronger, faster fragrance in the room. Take sticks out and the scent softens and slows. That is the whole dial.
Which is exactly why a living room is the easy case. This is not a bathroom or a wardrobe shelf, where two or three sticks is plenty and a full set would be cloying. A living room is the largest volume of air most of us try to scent — sofas, an open floor, often a walkway to the dining area. You want everything the bottle can give. So put every stick in.
The SOSA principle
In a small room you ration the sticks. In a living room you spend them — all of them.
The number of reeds is your only volume control. A big, open room is precisely where you turn it up, not down. If the full set is still faint, the answer is more reed or more power — never fewer sticks.

More sticks empty the bottle a little faster — a fair trade for living-room strength. A 130ml bottle or a refill offsets the shorter life.

How to get the most from a full set
Using all the sticks is step one; how you arrange and tend them is step two. Fan the reeds out into a wide spread rather than a tight bunch — the more each stick is exposed to open air, the more it can evaporate, so a spread throws further than a fist of sticks crammed together. Then think about where the bottle sits. A reed has no fan of its own, so it relies on the room's own air movement to carry scent. Place it near gentle airflow — a walkway, the edge of a seating cluster, or near an AC vent — and the moving air will push the fragrance across the room instead of letting it pool over the bottle. Once a week, flip the sticks so the soaked ends face up; it refreshes the exposed surface and revives the throw noticeably.
One honest caveat, because I would rather you spend well: there is a ceiling to what a single reed can do, and a big open living room can sit just past it. If you have used every stick, fanned them wide, placed the bottle in the airflow, flipped them weekly — and the room still feels under-scented — you have not done anything wrong. You have simply found the edge of the format. At that point the right move is a second reed at the far end of the room, or a powered diffuser. The Sukoon covers a mid-size room, and for a large or open-plan floor the waterless SOSA Vaayu pushes one even signature corner to corner without adding any humidity. A reed is wonderful within its range; the trick is knowing the range.
"There is no volume knob on a reed diffuser — the sticks are the knob. For a living room, turn it all the way up."

And the usual order still holds: fragrance crowns clean, aired air — it never covers for a stale room. Open the windows for a few minutes each day, keep the space dust-free, and let the reed do the pleasant last ten percent. Done that way, a full set of sticks in a well-chosen scent is one of the simplest, most reliable ways to make a living room smell cared-for, with no cords and nothing to switch on.
Frequently asked
How many reed diffuser sticks should I use in a living room?
For a living room, use all the sticks that come with the bottle — typically six to eight. A living room is a large, open space, so you want the maximum throw a single bottle can give. Fewer sticks are for small, enclosed spaces like a bathroom or a
wardrobe shelf. If the full set still feels faint, that is a sign the room is too big for one reed, not that you need to wait longer.
Do more reed sticks make the fragrance stronger?
Yes. Each stick is a wick that draws oil up and releases it into the air, so more sticks means more surface area evaporating and a stronger, faster scent. Removing sticks makes it fainter and slower. The number of sticks is the main way you control a reed diffuser's strength, so for a living room you generally want them all in.
Will using all the sticks make the reed run out faster?
A little, yes — more sticks evaporate more oil, so the bottle empties somewhat sooner in exchange for stronger scent. That trade is worth it in a living room, where faintness is the more common complaint. A larger 130ml bottle or a refill offsets the shorter life, so you get living-room-level strength without frequent replacing.
What if all the sticks still aren't enough for my living room?
Then the room is simply larger than one reed can cover. Two options work: place two reed bottles at opposite ends of the room, both with all sticks in, or step up to a powered diffuser like the
Sukoon for a mid-size room or the waterless
SOSA Vaayu for a large or open-plan one. A reed has a natural coverage limit; past it you add reeds or add power.
How can I make my reed sticks throw further?
Use every stick, fan them out in a wide spread rather than a tight bunch so more surface is exposed, and place the bottle near gentle airflow — a walkway or near an AC vent — which carries the scent across the room. Flipping the sticks once a week refreshes the exposed ends and revives the throw.
Turn it all the way up
A living room wants every stick in.
Start with a SOSA alcohol-free reed diffuser, use the full set of reeds and fan them wide. For a large or open-plan floor, add a Sukoon or step up to the waterless Vaayu for corner-to-corner scent.
