So where should a diffuser go? Away from a direct supply draught, but within the general path of air moving toward a return - about a metre high, clear of both. That single placement change often does more for distribution than a stronger fragrance or a bigger bottle.
Does this matter for reeds too? Yes - a reed near a strong supply draught can dry out unevenly and reach less predictably than one placed in a gentler, moving-air position.
A supply vent blows conditioned air outward into the room, usually at some force. A diffuser placed directly in that draught gets its evaporation or its output disrupted and diluted at the source - the moving air scatters the fragrance immediately around the vent rather than letting it settle into a steady, readable trail through the room. This is the same mechanism behind the long-standing placement rule to keep a reception diffuser out of the door draught: any strong, direct airflow across the source dilutes it right where it starts, before it has travelled anywhere useful.
A return vent works the opposite way. It is pulling air toward itself and back into the system, which means air anywhere in that vent's collection path is moving in a consistent direction, carrying whatever is airborne along with it - including fragrance from a diffuser positioned in that general path, not jammed directly against the grille. A diffuser placed where the room's air is already heading toward the return travels further through the space than one sitting in a pocket of relatively still air, simply because it is riding a current that already exists rather than trying to diffuse against nothing. This is the honest reason a machine near a return often distributes more effectively than the same machine near a supply, or near neither: it isn't a stronger machine, it's a machine working with air that's already moving somewhere on purpose.
None of this means position a diffuser directly at the return grille either - close proximity there can pull fragrance out of the room too efficiently, back into ducting or filters rather than letting it register with people in the space first. The useful position is somewhere in the general current heading toward the return, at the roughly-a-metre-high placement this cluster recommends throughout, clear of both the supply draught and the door draught.
