The fan is still turning. That is not the same as the system working.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I stop kitchen extract affecting guest spaces? Check make-up air, grease filters, pressure direction at every door, and where the discharge lands outside. An extract system fails silently while still making the same noise.

Why is make-up air the first check? Because extraction cannot move what it cannot replace. Without enough supply, the fan runs against a closed system and the kitchen pulls air in through its doors instead.

Should service areas be scented? No. Back-of-house, utility and store areas get extraction and dry storage. A kitchen or pantry gets nothing, ever, at any level.
The short answer
Short answer: Make-up air, grease filters, pressure direction, discharge location. Never fragrance.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) as the flagship delivery gift; volume gifts from ₹299; reed diffusers from ₹749; the Vaayu (₹11,999) for your own premises.

Straight answer
How do I stop kitchen extract and service areas from affecting guest spaces?
By checking four things, because a kitchen extract system fails quietly. It keeps making exactly the same noise while moving half the air it was designed to move, so nobody notices until guests do. Check one: make-up air. Extraction cannot move what it cannot replace, so without enough supply the fan runs against a closed system, and the kitchen pulls air in through its doors from the restaurant instead of out through the hood. This is the commonest fault and it is invisible. Check two: grease filters, which choke the flow when loaded and become a source in their own right. Check three: pressure direction. Hold a tissue at every door between kitchen, back of house and guest space - air must always move towards the kitchen. Check four: where the discharge lands outside. A flue terminating near an openable window, a courtyard, a terrace or an air intake puts the kitchen back into the building. And service areas get extraction and dry storage, never fragrance. A kitchen gets nothing, ever. Hotel Collection from ₹299, SOSA Megh ₹3,499, SOSA Boond ₹799. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Quick answer: make-up air, filters, pressure, discharge. The fan turning proves nothing.

An extract system fails quietly and nobody notices

The single most useful thing to understand about kitchen extract is that it fails silently. A mechanical extract system that has lost half its capacity looks identical to one working properly and sounds almost identical too, because the fan is still turning at the same speed - it is simply moving far less air. There is no alarm, no warning light and no complaint from the kitchen, who have adapted to their own environment. By the time a general manager is being told the lobby smells of the kitchen, the system may have been underperforming for a year. So the discipline here is periodic active checking rather than waiting for a symptom, and there are four things to check. Check one is make-up air, and it is first because it is the commonest fault and the least visible. Extraction is not a one-sided operation: for every cubic metre a hood pulls out, a cubic metre has to enter the kitchen from somewhere. If the designed supply is undersized, or the intake is blocked, or a damper is closed, or somebody sealed a louvre during a refurbishment, the fan runs against a closed system and moves a fraction of its rating. Worse, the air it does move has to come from somewhere, and it comes through the path of least resistance - which is the kitchen's own doors, drawing air in from the restaurant and the service corridor. That sounds harmless and is not, because the airflow through those doors is turbulent and two-directional, and cooking air escapes on the return stroke. A kitchen starved of make-up air is a kitchen that leaks. Check two is grease filters, and they do two bad things when they are loaded rather than one. They choke the flow, reducing extract capacity progressively and invisibly. And they become a source themselves, holding warm grease that continues to release into the kitchen and the duct. Both effects are cumulative and both are fixed by a cleaning schedule that runs on a calendar rather than on somebody's judgement of how dirty they look. The same applies to the duct itself, which needs periodic cleaning both for smell and for fire safety, and which is a specialist job rather than a housekeeping one. Check three is pressure direction, and this is the one you can do yourself in ten minutes with a tissue and no equipment. Walk every boundary in the chain - kitchen to restaurant, kitchen to service corridor, service corridor to back-of-house, back-of-house to the lift lobby and the core, restaurant to lobby - and at each door hold a tissue at the gap. Air should always move towards the kitchen and away from the guest. The kitchen should be negative relative to everything around it. The restaurant should be negative relative to the lobby. The service corridor should be negative relative to guest circulation. If any of those is reversed you have found a genuine cause, and the fix is a balancing exercise for whoever maintains your air handling rather than anything a housekeeping department can do. Do this at the busiest service of the day, not at three in the afternoon, because pressures change with the load. Check four is where the discharge lands, and this is the one that catches properties out after a renovation or a neighbouring development. A kitchen flue that terminates near an openable window, a light well, a courtyard, a terrace where guests sit, a balcony, or - worst of all - a fresh-air intake, is putting the kitchen straight back into the building. This produces a signature pattern: rooms or spaces on one elevation that go bad within an hour of being aired, which is the opposite of what a housekeeping fault looks like. It also explains problems that appear seasonally with the prevailing wind. This is a building matter and it needs a building answer - extending the flue, relocating the termination, or in some cases changing which rooms are sold. There is no housekeeping routine and no fragrance product that addresses it, and it is worth identifying early rather than spending two years treating the symptom. Beyond the kitchen, the same logic applies to the rest of back-of-house. Linen rooms, chute collection points, waste stores and dish areas all need their own extraction, and they need it at the source rather than at the top of a riser. A waste store without extraction and with a door onto a service corridor is a permanent input to the service core, and the service core is connected to your guest lift lobbies. Wet items should not stand overnight anywhere. Doors between back-of-house and guest circulation should close, and a door held open by a wedge is a permanent opening rather than an occasional one. Now the rule that is absolute, and we would rather state it than sell into it. Never scent a kitchen or a pantry, at any level, for any reason. And do not scent service areas, linen rooms, waste stores, staff corridors or utility spaces either. Three reasons. Fragrance does not remove a smell, it combines with it, and the combination is worse than either alone. A scented back-of-house area exports through exactly the same routes as the smell you were trying to cover, so you have doubled the problem rather than solved it. And staff are in those spaces for eight or nine hours with no ability to leave, which makes them the least tolerant population in the building and the one least able to complain about it. Extraction, dry storage, closed doors and a cleaning schedule are what those spaces get. Guest-facing fragrance goes in only after all of this is right, in the correct order of work: ventilation, moisture, housekeeping and laundry, and fragrance fourth. At that point it is cheap, because a building that is functioning needs very little. Keep one register across the property and vary only the level, since a change of level reads as the building quietening while a change of register reads as a fault. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, is the safest whole-property choice and holds its character at a whisper. Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, is dry and structural. White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, is the softest we make. Tea Garden and Warm Welcome suit entrances and public rooms. Old-World Glamour and Lobby Bar belong in a bar or lounge. All seven are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, they are SOSA's own interpretations, and we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. Hardware for guest spaces: a Megh at Rs 3,499 with a 6L tank for a large public volume, a Sukoon at Rs 1,799 for a lift lobby, a Boond at Rs 799 for a small transitional space, and reeds at Rs 749 to Rs 849 where continuous low output with nothing to switch suits the room - three to four months from a bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml, output rising with warmth and falling with cold. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage them. Finally, put the four checks on a schedule with dates and an owner, because the whole point of this article is that nothing here announces itself. A quarterly tissue test at every boundary during the busiest service, a filter schedule on a calendar, a duct clean by a specialist, and an annual look at where the flue terminates will catch almost everything before a guest does. We make no therapeutic, medical or wellness claims of any kind, and SOSA ambient fragrance is for the air of a room only. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against a zone list on WhatsApp.

Why this works
Four checks
1 Make-up air, because extraction cannot move what it cannot replace 2 Grease filters, which choke flow and become a source themselves 3 Pressure direction, tested with a tissue at every door 4 And where the discharge actually lands outside
The flagship delivery gift: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - a rechargeable waterless car diffuser with three hotel-inspired scents in the box. Per-unit gifts from ₹299; volume pricing on WhatsApp.
01
It fails without a symptom
Same noise, half the air
No alarm, no warning light, and no complaint from a kitchen brigade who have adapted to their own environment. By the time a guest reports it, the system may have been underperforming for a year.
Tip: Which is why this has to be checked, not waited for.
02
Make-up air first, then filters
Extraction cannot move what it cannot replace
Starved of supply, the fan runs against a closed system and the kitchen draws air in through its own doors - and cooking air escapes on the return stroke. Loaded filters choke flow and become a source.
03
Then pressure, then the flue
A tissue at every door, at the busiest service
Air must always move towards the kitchen. And check where the discharge lands - a flue near a window, a courtyard or an air intake puts the kitchen back into the building.
Tip: Bad within an hour of airing means look outside.
The SOSA principle
Staff are in those spaces for nine hours and cannot leave.
Which is why back-of-house gets extraction and never fragrance.

Because it keeps making the same noise while moving half the air

The important thing about kitchen extract is that it fails silently: a system that has lost half its capacity looks and sounds identical, because the fan is still turning at the same speed and simply moving less air. No alarm, no light, and no complaint from a brigade who have adapted to their own environment. Four checks. Make-up air first, because extraction cannot move what it cannot replace - an undersized supply, a blocked intake or a louvre sealed during a refurbishment leaves the fan running against a closed system, and the air it does move comes in through the kitchen's own doors, with cooking air escaping on the return stroke. Grease filters second, which choke flow progressively and invisibly and become a warm source in their own right. Pressure direction third, which you can test yourself in ten minutes with a tissue at every boundary during the busiest service - air must always move towards the kitchen and away from the guest. And the discharge fourth: a flue terminating near an openable window, a courtyard, a terrace or a fresh-air intake puts the kitchen straight back into the building, with the signature pattern being spaces that go bad within an hour of being aired.

Whatever your business gifts, the logic is the same: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, keep the register gentle and crowd-safe, and brand the gesture with your card rather than your logo on the product. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so every customer gift quietly gives twice. Honest notes for business gifters: customer taste varies, so volume programmes should run gentle, crowd-tested registers - fresh, clean and lightly floral scents are received well across every profile, and space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) avoid the personal-taste risk of skin perfume entirely. Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing, pilot batches, branded cards and custom hamper builds are quoted on WhatsApp - and signature-scent development for your brand is a consultation with our perfumer, not an off-the-shelf item, so timelines are discussed case by case. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic diffusers use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - the two are not interchangeable. All personal fragrances are alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant. WhatsApp bulk desk: +91 96192 18531. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.

And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop kitchen extract affecting guest spaces?
Check make-up air, grease filters, pressure direction at every door, and where the discharge lands outside. Extract systems fail silently while still running.
Why does make-up air matter most?
Because extraction cannot move what it cannot replace. Starved of supply, the fan pulls air in through the kitchen doors instead, and cooking air escapes on the return stroke.
How do I test pressure myself?
Hold a tissue at every boundary door during the busiest service. Air should always move towards the kitchen and away from guest spaces.
What if a space goes bad within an hour of airing?
Look outside. That pattern points to a kitchen flue, extract discharge or drain run terminating near a window, courtyard or fresh-air intake.
Should service areas be scented?
No. Back-of-house, linen rooms, waste stores and staff corridors get extraction and dry storage. A kitchen or pantry gets nothing, ever. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the customer-gifting advice applies whatever your business finally buys.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume.
