Founder Diaries · Optical Retail · Building A Signature
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
I will answer the commercial question before the creative one, because it decides everything that follows. SOSA composes for its own range. There is no published bespoke service, no private-label programme, no custom-fragrance development, no exclusivity arrangement and no branded-labelling option — so a premium optical brand cannot commission a scent from us, and I am not going to imply otherwise. What a brand can do is choose one composition from what exists and hold it: same scent, same format, same level, same placement, in every store, for years. That is unglamorous and it is also the only part of a signature a customer is capable of noticing. And the boundary this cluster rests on still applies: reception, waiting and optical retail are hospitality and retail space; diagnostics, examination rooms, consultation cabins, the procedure suite and any post-operative area are clinical space, and nothing I sell goes into them.
Quick answers — read this first
You cannot have a fragrance made for you here. SOSA publishes no bespoke, private-label, white-label or custom-composition service, and no exclusivity: anyone can buy the same bottle you buy. If exclusivity is the requirement, this is the wrong supplier and you should stop reading.

You can have consistency, and it is the part that registers. Choose one of five reed compositions — Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849, Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799 or Evening Calm ₹799 — and never change it.

Build the signature on something you can buy again. Reed oil has published refills at 300ml ₹2,399 and 500ml ₹3,499. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil, so a Vaayu is the weaker base for a signature you intend to hold.

What this page will not claim: no fragrance here affects how anyone feels, how long they browse, what they buy or what they think of your brand, and nothing here is medical or safety advice. Some people are sensitive to airborne fragrance, which is why the clinical pathway stays fragrance-free.
The short answer
Short answer: pick one existing composition, fix five variables in writing — scent, format, level, placement and who may change them — and buy the refill format so you can hold it. For most optical brands that is Mountain Breeze 130ml ₹1,349 with a 300ml oil refill ₹2,399, or a Sukoon ₹1,899 held at one setting.
Why exclusivity is not the goal it looks like: nobody who walks into your store has a reference sample of your competitor's air. What they can register is that your room smells the same in March as it did in November, and the same in one city as another. Repetition is legible; exclusivity is invisible.
Straight answer
How do I create a signature fragrance for a premium optical brand?
1. Not by commissioning one, because that service does not exist here. SOSA publishes no bespoke development, no private-label or white-label manufacturing, no custom concentration, no branded labelling and no exclusivity. I compose for the SOSA range, in small batches in Pune, and the range is what is for sale.

2. Create it by selection and repetition instead. Choose one composition from the five in the reed range, or one water-based Hotel Collection scent if you run ultrasonic machines. Then refuse to change it, which is harder than choosing it.

3. Fix five variables in writing: the composition, the format and machine, the level (reed count or machine setting), the placement, and the name of the one person allowed to alter any of them. A signature dies from small unrecorded adjustments, not from a bad first choice.

4. Choose a base you can re-buy. Reed oil has published refills — 300ml ₹2,399 for roughly 8–11 months and 500ml ₹3,499 for roughly 14–18 months, at about ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 per ml for a 50ml bottle. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil, so building a brand signature on a Vaayu means building it on the 400ml in the box.

5. Accept the gaps rather than working around them. No oud, no musk-forward composition, no amber, no leather, no aquatic. No room spray of any kind — every SOSA spray is a car perfume, so there is no take-home or giveaway version of your scent. Replacement reeds are not sold separately. There is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser.

6. Keep it out of the clinical pathway. If your optical brand sits inside an eye-care practice, the signature lives in the retail zone and the arrival zone only, freestanding, never mounted into shared ducting.

7. Nothing here is clinical advice. Ventilation, cleaning protocol, infection control and patient suitability rest with you and your clinicians. Everything SOSA makes is composed and made in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: no bespoke or private-label service is published, so a signature here means choosing one existing composition and holding it — Mountain Breeze from ₹849 is the usual answer, with a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 so you can keep buying it. Write down the scent, the format, the level, the placement and the one person who may change them.
SOSA reed diffuser oil-only refill in 300ml and 500ml, the supply that lets an optical brand hold one composition
A signature is a supply decision before it is a scent decision
SOSA reed diffuser refills · oil only 300ml ₹2,399 · 500ml ₹3,499
The reason I steer optical brands towards a reed composition for a signature is unromantic: you can buy it again. Refills are oil only — you reuse your own glass vessel and your own reeds — at roughly ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 per ml for a 50ml bottle. A 300ml runs about 8–11 months in one bottle and a 500ml about 14–18 months. Reeds are not sold separately, which is an honest gap; my guidance is to refresh them every few months. Pour to the neck, return the reeds, flip once so both ends are coated. Keep the vessel on a tray, because the oil marks wood and stone.

Part one — what is not available, said plainly

Most articles on this subject describe a process — brief, moodboard, accords, trials, a proprietary blend — that assumes a supplier who offers it. I would rather tell you what SOSA does not offer, in one place, so that you can decide in five minutes whether to keep reading.

1
FACTOR ONE · THE SERVICE GAP, IN FULL
No bespoke composition, no private label, no exclusivity, no branded bottle
SOSA publishes no custom-fragrance development service, no private-label or white-label manufacturing, no contract filling, no branded or co-branded labelling, no exclusivity or category-lock arrangement, and no bulk or corporate pricing programme. There is also no published multi-site programme, no annual maintenance contract, no installation service, no stated warranty term and no published lead time. Warranty length, spare parts and servicing are not stated anywhere I can point you to, so I will not state them either. If your plan depends on any of those, the honest next step is to ask through the contact page and get an answer in writing before you commit a brand decision to it. What exists is a range: five reed compositions from ₹749 to ₹1,349, oil refills, four machine sizes and a water-based fragrance line for ultrasonic machines.
The rule: never build a brand standard on a service that is not published. Ask first, commit second.
2
FACTOR TWO · WHAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY BUILD
Selection, repetition and control — the three things that survive contact with a shop floor
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser held at one repeatable setting for an optical brandSukoon 500ml₹1,899 · one fixed settingChoose the composition once, write down the level, and give one named person the authority to change it. That third element is the one brands skip, and it is why signatures decay: a staff member decides the room smells of nothing, adds two reeds or turns a dial, and nobody records it. On a reed bottle the level is a number you can count from the doorway — four reeds, six reeds — which makes it self-auditing. On a machine it is a setting and a timer; a Sukoon has steady, 2H and 4H timers and a remote that belongs in a drawer, and the Vaayu has adjustable intensity, 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h run windows, day selection and a key-lock. The key-lock is the closest thing in the range to a brand-standards enforcement tool.
Write it as a line, not a paragraph: composition, format, level, placement, and the person who owns all four.
3
FACTOR THREE · CHOOSING THE ONE COMPOSITION
For an optical brand the shortlist is short, and two of the five are ruled out on register
Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar, 9.4 on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds — is where I would start almost every optical brand: dry, woody, unremarkable in the best sense, and it holds its shape at a low dose. Morning Freshness at 9.0 is the alternative for a bright, glassy, cool-lit interior. Fresh Brew at 9.5 is the only warm register and belongs only in an optical room with its own air. Garden Bloom and Evening Calm at ₹799 I would rule out for a brand that sits anywhere near a clinic — floral weight and soft lavender are the two fastest routes to a room that reads as a spa. Those strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale, not an industry standard and not a concentration.

Part two — six things brands mean when they say "signature"

Find your version in the first column. Three of these six are available today, and the page is more useful for the three that are not.

The request audit · what is and is not available
Six versions of the same request, and the honest status of each
What you are actually asking for Available from SOSA? What it would require The workable version today
One recognisable scent, identical in every store ★ Yes — this is the achievable one A written standard and one accountable owner One composition, one level, one placement rule, held
A composition created to your brief No — no bespoke or custom-development service is published A development programme SOSA does not offer Choose the nearest of five and stop looking
A scent no other business may buy No — no exclusivity or category lock is published A contractual arrangement that does not exist here Consistency instead of exclusivity; customers cannot detect the difference
Bottles carrying your own brand label No — no private-label or co-branded packaging is published Private-label manufacturing Keep the bottle out of sight; a signature is air, not a display object
A take-home spray or scented giveaway in the same scent No — SOSA sells no room spray; every SOSA spray is a car perfume A product line that does not exist Nothing. Do not substitute a candle or a car product for this
The same scent across many branches, indefinitely In principle, subject to supply you must confirm Published refills, or written confirmation of availability Reed compositions with 300ml ₹2,399 / 500ml ₹3,499 refills — not a Vaayu
The honest caveat: this table describes what SOSA publishes at the time of writing, not a quotation and not an offer. No bulk pricing, discount slab, invoicing arrangement, installation visit, service contract, warranty period or delivery window is stated anywhere in this guide, because none is published — ask through the contact page before committing. No claim is made about comfort, mood, browsing, purchases, footfall, brand perception or revenue, and no product is described as safe or unsuitable for any patient group.

Three products for a signature you can actually hold
The SOSA principle
A customer cannot tell whether your scent is exclusive, because they have nothing to compare it with. They can tell whether it is the same as last time — which means a signature is built out of discipline, not out of a formula nobody else owns.
And discipline is the part no supplier can sell you.

Part three — when an optical brand should not attempt this

The first case is a brand whose real requirement is exclusivity. If the value you want is that nobody else can have it, no arrangement here delivers that, and a signature built on a publicly purchasable bottle will feel like a compromise every time you think about it. Say no to the project rather than half-doing it. The second is a single-store brand still changing its interior. Materials and lighting change how much fragrance a room needs, so fixing a level in a shop you are about to re-fit means fixing the wrong number; wait until the room is finished and has stopped smelling of its own joinery.

The third is the case this whole cluster exists for. If your optical brand sits inside an eye-care practice and the retail floor shares its air with the corridor to consultation, you do not have a retail zone to give a signature to. You have one arrival zone with a display in it, and the honest answer is one composition at reception level for the whole space. A signature that leaks into diagnostics or examination rooms is not a brand asset; it is a boundary failure, and I would rather lose the sale than help build it. In a clinical building, never mount a diffuser into shared ducting — freestanding, away from the corridor, is the only placement I will describe.

The fourth is supply, and it is the one that turns a good idea into a visible failure. SOSA does not currently sell a separate cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu; the 400ml supplied in the box runs roughly ninety days or more at a mid setting and is the whole supply available at the time of writing. A brand that standardises on that machine and then cannot buy the oil has a signature its customers can watch disappear. The water-based Hotel Collection is for ultrasonic machines and must never be used as a substitute in a Vaayu; those scents are inspired by the atmosphere of well-known hotels, and SOSA is an independent Indian brand unaffiliated with any hotel group. Confirm supply through the contact page before a brand decision depends on it.

Nobody notices that your fragrance is exclusive. Everybody notices that it is the same one they met last time.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — the five decisions to write down

A signature is a document before it is a purchase. Here is the document, with what to buy against each line and the failure that follows if you leave it blank.

The written standard
Five decisions, what to buy against each, and what goes wrong if you skip it
The decision to fix Your options today What it costs to hold for a year What happens if you leave it unwritten
1 · The composition ★ One of five reed scents, or one Hotel Collection scent for ultrasonic 130ml ₹1,349 × 3 rotations = ₹4,047 a bottle-station Each store buys what is in stock and the brand has five scents
2 · The format and mechanism Reed (passive, no control) or ultrasonic Sukoon ₹1,899 (setting, timer, humidity) Sukoon ₹1,899 once, plus 300ml ₹1,799 = ₹3,698 in year one Two mechanisms produce two different rooms with one scent name
3 · The level A reed count, or a named machine setting and run window Nothing — but it must be written on the stockroom wall Upward drift. Nobody ever adjusts a diffuser downward
4 · The placement Far end of the retail run, waist to chest height, out of light beams The price of a tray One store scents its corridor and another its stockroom
5 · The owner and the supply One named person; refills 300ml ₹2,399 · 500ml ₹3,499 ₹2,399 covers roughly 8–11 months in one vessel The standard survives about one staffing change
Not on this list at all Bespoke composition · private label · exclusivity · room spray Not available — do not plan around them A brand plan that cannot be executed
Honest notes for buyers: nothing here is medical, clinical or safety advice, and no SOSA product is described as safe or unsuitable for any patient group — that judgement belongs to the practice and its clinicians. A diffuser adds a scent to the air; it does not clean, purify, filter, sanitise or disinfect air, and does not remove disinfectant, damp or occupancy smells. No claim is made about comfort, mood, browsing, purchases, footfall, brand perception, reviews or revenue. The totals shown are arithmetic on listed prices, not quotations: ₹1,349 × 3 = ₹4,047 and ₹1,899 + ₹1,799 = ₹3,698. SOSA publishes no bespoke, private-label, custom-fragrance or exclusivity service, no bulk or corporate pricing, no multi-site programme, no maintenance contract, no installation service, no warranty term and no lead time — ask through the contact page before committing. Coverage figures are manufacturer specifications and vary with ceiling height, air exchange and occupancy. Megh at ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft — less than a Sukoon — so it is a runtime and humidity machine, never a coverage upgrade. Safar at ₹3,999 has no published coverage figure. Reed strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds; replacement reeds are not sold separately, and there is no oud, musk-forward, amber or leather composition in the range. SOSA sells no room spray.
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser held as the fixed composition for a premium optical brand
The composition I would fix for most optical brands
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
If you are going to hold one scent for years, hold one that does not tire. Dry pine and sage over Indian cedar has no sweetness to become cloying, no floral weight to read as a spa and enough structure to stay recognisable at four reeds — which matters, because a brand signature is run low and run constantly. It also has the practical advantage that its refill is published: a 300ml at ₹2,399 keeps one vessel going for roughly 8–11 months. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks, 130ml ₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks. On a tray, out of the light, away from any corridor to clinical rooms.

A note from Sonal

A founder of a small optical group came to me with a brief that would not have been out of place at a fashion house: leather, ink, a little smoke, something that would be theirs alone. I told him in the first conversation that SOSA does not offer bespoke composition or private label, that I could not sell him exclusivity, and that if those were the requirement he should talk to a bespoke house instead. It was a short meeting and I expected it to be the last one.

He came back three weeks later having asked a question I had not: what would his customers actually be able to perceive. The answer was that they would perceive repetition. Not the formula, not the exclusivity, not the story — just whether the second store smelled like the first, and whether November smelled like March.

So we did the unglamorous version. One composition, four reeds, one placement rule, one person allowed to change it, and a refill schedule in the diary. Two years on, that is the most consistent scent identity I have been involved with, and none of it required a service I do not offer. Everything we make is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Can SOSA create a custom fragrance for my optical brand?
No. SOSA composes for its own range and publishes no bespoke development, private-label or white-label service, no custom concentration and no exclusivity arrangement. The five reed compositions and the water-based Hotel Collection are what exist. If a made-to-brief composition is genuinely the requirement, a bespoke house is the right supplier and I would rather say so than take the enquiry.
If anyone can buy the same scent, is it really a signature?
In the only sense that operates in a shop, yes. Nobody arrives with a reference sample of anyone else's air; what a person can register is whether your room smells the same as it did last time, and whether your second store agrees with your first. That is a discipline problem, not a formulation problem — which is why the useful part of this page is the written standard in Part four rather than the scent list.
Can I get the same scent as a room spray or a giveaway for customers?
No. SOSA sells no room spray or home spray — every SOSA spray is a car perfume — so there is no take-home version of a signature and I would not substitute a candle or a car product for one. There is also no hotel-inspired reed diffuser: the Hotel Collection is a water-based fragrance for ultrasonic machines only, and it cannot go into a reed bottle or a Vaayu.
Should I build the signature on a Vaayu or on reeds?
On whichever you can re-buy. Reed oil has published refills at 300ml ₹2,399 and 500ml ₹3,499, which makes a reed composition the safer base for something you intend to hold for years. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil, and the 400ml in the box is the supply available at the time of writing, so a brand standard resting on that machine should be confirmed with SOSA through the contact page before it is written down.
We have several stores. Is there a bulk or corporate arrangement?
None is published — no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no corporate account, no invoicing arrangement, no installation service, no maintenance contract, no warranty term and no stated lead time. I will not imply any of them exist. Multi-store enquiries should go through the contact page, and the answer you get there is the one to plan around.
Optical retail · building a signature
No bespoke service exists — so build the signature out of one choice, held
Choose one composition: Mountain Breeze from ₹849 for most optical brands, Morning Freshness ₹749 for a bright glassy interior, Fresh Brew ₹849 only where the retail room has its own air. Fix the level, the placement and the one person who may change them. Buy the format you can re-buy — oil refills 300ml ₹2,399 and 500ml ₹3,499. SOSA publishes no bespoke, private-label, exclusivity, bulk or multi-site programme; larger enquiries go through the contact page. A diffuser adds a scent to the air; it does not clean or purify air, remove any existing smell, or have any clinical effect.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on what a premium optical brand can and cannot build as a signature scent. Nothing in it is medical, clinical or regulatory advice; no clinical outcome, patient response, safety property or business result is claimed for any product. Statements about services SOSA does not offer describe what is published at the time of writing and are not a quotation. No competitor is named or rated, and no hotel group is a SOSA customer, partner or reference.

SOSA range, specifications and prices used in this guide (verified August 2026): Vaayu ₹11,999 — waterless cold-air nebulisation of undiluted fragrance oil; no water, no heat, no added humidity, no white mineral dust. Coverage up to 1000 m³, about 2,000–3,000 sq ft. 400ml refillable tank lasting roughly 90+ days at a mid setting. Bluetooth app plus onboard controls, 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h run windows, day selection, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and key-lock. Under 38 dB. DC 12V / 1A, 5W. Freestanding or wall / HVAC mount. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil; the 400ml supplied in the box is the fragrance available at the time of writing, so a practice planning continuous or multi-site use should confirm current refill availability with SOSA before committing. The water-based Hotel Collection is made for ultrasonic machines and must not be used in a Vaayu. Other machines: Boond 300ml ₹899 (~150 sq ft, ultrasonic) · Sukoon 500ml ₹1,899 (270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, remote and steady/2H/4H timers, three 15ml fragrances included, ultrasonic) · Megh 6L ₹3,499 (~215 sq ft — a runtime and humidity machine that covers less than a Sukoon, never a coverage upgrade) · Safar ₹3,999 (waterless cold diffusion, cordless, 20ml, about 6.9cm, three speeds, 1/2/3-hour auto-off — sold as a car and travel diffuser, personal-scale only; SOSA publishes no coverage figure for it) · Aangan ₹25,999 (HVAC nebulising, ~8,000–10,000 sq ft) · Meenar ₹38,500 (commercial HVAC, 12,000–18,000 sq ft). Water-based Hotel Collection for ultrasonic machines: 15ml ₹299 · 100ml ₹999 · 300ml ₹1,799 · pack of seven ₹1,799; scents are inspired by the atmosphere of well-known hotels — SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or supplying any hotel group. Reed diffusers ₹749–₹1,349 (50ml 6–8 weeks, 130ml 14–18 weeks, six fibre reeds, no 100ml size; replacement reeds are not sold separately). Reed oil cannot be used in an ultrasonic machine and Hotel Collection oil cannot be used in reeds. SOSA sells no room spray or home spray — every SOSA spray is a car perfume. Nothing in this guide is medical, clinical or safety advice. A fragrance diffuser adds a scent to the air. It does not clean, purify, filter, sanitise or disinfect air, does not remove or neutralise disinfectant, damp or occupancy smells, and has no effect on comfort, anxiety, waiting time, recovery or any clinical outcome. Some people are sensitive to airborne fragrance, which is why this guide recommends that examination rooms, diagnostic areas, consultation cabins, procedure suites and post-operative areas remain fragrance-free, that a fragrance-free seating option always exist, and that a diffuser is never mounted into shared HVAC in a clinical building. Decisions about clinical policy, ventilation standards, infection control and patient suitability rest entirely with the practice and its clinicians. A persistent stale, damp or disinfectant smell is a ventilation, moisture or cleaning problem — SOSA sells no dehumidifier and no air purifier, and fragrance should never be used to cover one. Coverage, runtime and longevity figures are manufacturer specifications and typical ranges, not guarantees, and vary with room volume, ceiling height, air exchange, occupancy and season. SOSA publishes no commercial or bulk pricing, no corporate account, no annual maintenance contract, no installation service, no stated warranty term and no multi-location programme; warranty length, spare parts, servicing and app platform availability are unconfirmed, and larger or multi-site enquiries should go through the contact page before any commitment. Composed and made in small batches in Pune, India. Free shipping above ₹499. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
